Packers vs Jaguars First Impressions

Packers 27, Jaguars 23 - Packers make it a bit scary, but the defense comes up big when it counted most.

Here we go...

MM on the heat factor: It's hot even for "down here" standards. Our players are on top of hydration, and we need to take care of one another with (playing) rotation."

MM insists the Packers won't have Jordy on a snap count, which I find kind of shocking. Can he really go from zero to sixty once the game starts? Let's see...

Packers win toss and defer.

Lane Taylor watch:  Interesting that Packers first few runs have all been to Lane Taylor's side.  MM making a point? Nice job by Taylor on the 4th and one and solid job overall on the first series.

Packers DBs playing aggressive man.coverage early. Got away with pass interference twice before Burnett gets called for one.

Burnett shoulder-to-shoulder with Joe Thomas on the Matthews sack, then dropped off. There's that Burnett quasi-LB look we saw briefly in camp.

Davante Adams.... SMH...

Start of second quarter

I love a good second and 10 handoff from your own goal line...

Packers fans on twitter already writing off this team based on one quarter.

And just like that, Packers drive down the field, Nelson with 3 catches, including a TD and we're back to the 2014 look...

With how shaky Burnett has looked in coverage, I'd like to see even more of him playing in the box.

Mistake Rollins made on the TD catch s trying to be physical with Thomas instead of just out-running him. You're not going to alter Thomas' route. Just try to beat him to the spot.

Was thinking a good old-fashioned double-up would be cool here. Rodgers executes first part with a hard to believe heave to Adams  for the TD.

21-17 Packers

Halftime thoughts:

Lane Taylor has NOT been a problem.

Has there been anyone in recent #Packers memory so insanely inconsistent as Davante Adams?

Run defense has been surprisingly good. Jags not the best running team, but still cause for optimism.

Secondary has looked a bit out of sync against a very good passing offense.

Start of second half:

Lane Taylor finally beat in pass pro by Mahklik Jackson, but Rodgers scrambles right and throws it away. No real harm done.

Martinez and Ryan have been active and both have played well. Looks like going with them as the starting ILBs was the right decision.

Eddie Lacy still looks back way too much when he breaks into the clear. Just keep the ball tucked and run...

Aaron Rodgers being Aaron Rodgers. Lots of moving around in the pocket and throwing on the run with uncanny accuracy.

GB 24, JAX 20

Start of fourth quarter:

This game is going as expected. Packers are the better team but the Jags are firmly in it and probably will be to the end.

Packers finish off a time-wasting (9:14), defense-exhausting drive, but in the end, three run attempts at the goal line fail and they take the field goal for a seven point lead. I could see three straight runs if they were on the one, but that wasn't the case. Not pleased with that sequence.

Plus there was obvius confusion on the third one. Packers OL in obvious Pass Pro and Rodgers with an inside handoff to Starks. Don't know who screwed up but Jordy was wide open on a quick slant route.

Someone tell me why you play 5 yards off of Allen Robinson on 4th and four?

Jaguars making 4th down conversions look easy. Three so far. It's what's keeping the Jags in the game.

Oh, the outside toss to Lacy - the bane of my existence. Rarely works, often loses yardage as it does here and ends up causing the Packers to punt and give the ball back. As one of my twitter followers sais, could have just run Lacy up the gut twice, pick up a first and kill the clock. But that would make too much sense.

My God, Burnett has been awful all game.

#Packers finally get a fourth down stop, when they needed it most. This was way more scary than it needed to be.

Final Score: Packers 27, Jaguars 23

Jacksonville is a below average team, and won't win more than 6 this season. Overall unconvincing win, but in the end it doesn't matter, 1-0, as a win is a win. Could've been 50-0 would still just be 1-0. Hope that this is due to McCarthy teams usually starting very slow and it will get better as the season progresses. But there are some serious problems on this team.

I disagree: Jax has talent on both sides of the ball and plays in a division with several weak teams. I think they'll be close to .500 when it's all over.

We will see. I think they have a good passing O but no run game that's even close to being good. And Chris ivory won't change much there either. Their D has some talent, but especially their secondary is suspect. House is their best player there in the DBackfield, and he wouldn't start for many NFL teams.
And Bortles may throw the ball well in situations but overall is just ok and will make his share of mistakes. The only reason I think they could be better than 6-10 is their play in a weak division. But I believe they'll go 1-3 vs AFC west and 1-3 vs NFC North. Then they'll have to go to buffalo in winter. Get Baltimore at home, think they'll lose both. That'd mean they have to go 5-1 in their Division to have 7-9...

But even if i'm off a couple games then this is a 8-8 team at best. Not saying they have no talent and in a couple years they may be good but I simply think they will draft high again next year. It won't be every week that they can keep their 4th down conversion rate that high...

Just my humble opinion but we shall see at the end of December who is right...

Jacksonville is no longer a below-average team. Years of high draft picks has changed that. Add Myles Jack and Chris Ivory, they are not a laughing stock any more.

Jax has a good chance of a better than 50-50 season. The patience their owner has shown is due a payback. It didn't come against the Pack, but it will, oh yes it will.

Well played the Packers, in the only game this year I had them down as losing.

Agree Al their QB B Bortles threw for over 4000 yards and 34 TD passes last year and along with those high draft picks their owner is willing to spring for Free Agents. They aren't Doormats anymore. Considering this was a Road Game in the late summer Florida heat this was a Good Game for the Packers!

I don't think they are a laughing stock. There is talent on that team. But still think they'll be a below average team this season. Chris Ivory is not a difference maker IMHO. For Jack the jury is still out of course. But their secondary is suspect. Their OL is below average especially running the ball. They do not have that easy a schedule playing AFC West and NFC North, going to Buffalo end of November and playing Baltimore home besides the Division games. I simply don't believe they will finish better than 6-10.

But i'd trade their WR for the Packers WR for sure...

"But I'd trade their WR for the Packers WR for sure".

I wouldn't go that far Pete, but I would have settled for Allen Robinson who was taken in the 2nd round just AFTER Davante Adams. Cant get them all I guess, but Robinson on this team puts them at 2011 status.

Stream of Conciosness observation

Packer d has to get off the field early today
Lacy need to make an early decision pon first run - not an outside runner
Love the decision for early 4th down conversion - time to test that new short yardage offense
Good sign when Arodge is comfortably on the run again - shows respect for our receivers again.
If you make a challenge successful, you should be given it back
Looks like Randall got away with a PI
Stupid PI on the 3rd and 12 by Burnett - let him catch it 11 yards short
I think Clay matthews is playing the outside again - SACK!!
WHy is lacy in the game on 3rd and long? We at least need a blocker back there
Hate to see Rodgers miss his man by so much - Accuracy was bad last year particularly on deep balls.
We need long drives to keep the defense off the field - especially today
At least the defense didn’t waste a lot of energy on the 1st TD - clean it up
Interesting they are running behind Lane Taylor early
Same old third down conversion problems early
Same old Devonte Adams problems early - a good receiver catches that ball
Three and outs on offense are going to kill this defense today
At least the punfer has good early returns
Florida Sun is killing our punt return game - I have never seen anything like it before
Offense looks terrible!!!!!! Three straight 3 and outs!!!! 2015 continues…..
Where is Cook on these third downs? All manageable
Matthews blitzing from the middle on 3rd and long
Peppers invisible on D early
Good no call on the supposed defensive hold - Gotta let them play
I hate the NFL has eliminated the kickoff - turn it into a punt
1st down running away from Lane - don’t know if it means anything
I don’t know if I would be running hurry with the defense on the
It’s official Jordy is back!!
Great drive!!
No passes to the middle of the field all on the outside
Overall great run D in 1st half considering Pennel is out
Great throw catch by the bad guys before half - almost got there with the rush, rollins didn’t finish off the coverage
Bad call on the PI before half - one for the good guys
Are you kidding me!!!!!!! Adams from Rodgers - He makes up for early drop - would like to see another angle to see what Rodgers was looking at.
Halftime - Packer ball 2nd half - pray for long drive
Overall not a great 1st half - if not for the bad PI call before half and improbable play, we are down by 3 or tied.
Lane Taylor holding up so far - I’d like to see more Peppers in the 2nd half - Mr invisible so far.
1st third and 5 or less conversion of the season comes on 1st drive of 2nd half
Followed by great hands 3rd and 10 conversion by cobb - accurate pass on that play goes for a score - lead him Aaron!!
Richard Rodgers doind what he does best - hands - receivers making plays
Great drive to start the half - keeps D off of the field - FGs won’t win this game though
Where is Cook in the red zone? Over the middle
Hoping Cobb is OK - help off the field doesn’t look good
Mason is still dialed in!!
Half Time adjustment for the D - covered the screen
Why aren’t our WRs that open over the middle - Hurns big play - Gunter the victim
Good no call on that 3rd and 7 on Shields - FG Jags
Cook 1st catch for 7 - Rich Rodgers would have gained 2 on that play
The Ripper with his 1sr play - Fullback clearly being phased out
Lacy with his 2nd big play of the day - causes winded defense to burn a TO - great start to this second half keeping the defense off the field while making their defense stay out there. Need to finish with TD
Cobb was open on end zone pass - just missed
2nd favorable offsides penalty
Great gutsy run by Cobb!!! Right into the teeth of the line to pick up the 1st down
Wow!! No passes in three straight plays from inside the 10 - disappointing - TD wins the game there
Lots of body blows to the JAX defense on that drive - other than the non TD - couldn’t ask for a better drive - lots of plays - our defense should be fresh now for the stretch
Not time for trickery by JAX - Cost them 7 yards
Waste of a sack with back cross blitz - big play to Robinson 1st down
Is Peppers even playing?
Nick Perry - Big Play!! Gotta convert 4th down defense!!
Love to see a team using 2nd half time outs early that is NOT the Packers - amazingly we still have three with 7 min left
Perry with the big play on defense - time to run out the clock and go home - need to convert 1st dows and keep the clock moving - Cmon Pack!!!
Don’t know why teams allow for a free 25 yard line spot on kick off - kick it high and defend is the play - most will end inside the 20
On 2nd and 2 trying to run clock why pitch from shot gun? - line up FB and pound it out - terrible call!! We had them there!!
Take a delay!!!! What a debacle here - terrible!!
Awful series for the game winner!!!!!!!!!!!!
Defense has to win it - shouldn’t be this way with our offense - Need a turnover - probably not going to stop them in four downs
Probably a little Interference on that pass to Robinson by Randall - can’t say we haven’t gotten calls
Can we stop a 4th down play today? Holding - Terrible call on the defensive holding - not sure D has any more left
Not Shields - concussion probably based on how he went down
4th down? Can we? For the game? Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shouldn’t have been this close - overall this was a team win - we needed every inch and every call (except for the bad holding call on 4th and 14)

The play calling still does. I really wish they would work in the kind of stuff they did on the last two drives of the 1st half early in the game instead of waiting to adjust.

BTW, anyone else think that Jerod Cook was way too small a piece of the game plan?

In this day and age with reduced offseason practices and starters sitting in the preseason, the first couple weeks of the regular season will be more mistake prone until teams get into synch.

Jordy will get more reps. His timing with Aaron will get better. The secondary will improve. And so on...

We rave about the 2014 season, but no one mentions the dud of an opener we had in Seattle. It's a process.

More of a nail biter than it needed to be. Defense finally made the stop at the end. Toss to Lacy on 2nd and 2 was ridiculous. Run straight ahead and let Lacy fall forward for 2 yards. This defense still needs to make stops after offense takes lead. In 2Q Packers go up 14-10 and defense let's Jax come back and take lead. 3Q Pack goes up 24-17 and defense allows long FG drive. They did make 2 stops in the 4Q to hang onto the win but it should have been a lot easier. However given the heat and the fact that it's Sept football I'll take a road win any time. Taylor did OK at LG. 1-0! Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Dobber - good pickup. I thought the same. Just when we needed a 45+ yard punt Schum becomes Masthay. He could have really helped out the defense with a good punt at that point. Fortunately, he was fine with holding, Crosby was right on. Thanks, Since '61

Morgan Burnett looks like he hasn't played much in the last several weeks. I think this trickled down throughout the secondary. Seemed like Gunter was getting beat more often than not. Still, this was a game they would've lost a year ago. Offense looked much better at times. Got enough plays to win.

On to Minnesota...

Agree, line protected fairly well, but Aaron's feet are so important to our game-plan and he was out of the pocket (as usual) quite a bit. What I really liked, was seeing the timing passes improve with Jordy. They seemed very off the first couple of passes, but Jordy and Adams catches (what a throw!) seemed to energize the team for awhile.

I saw little timing between AR and Jordy. On the TD pass, Jordy sat down in a soft spot, AR saw him just in time and threw a laser, but there was no timing as in route timing involved. AR's feet were incredibly important - he ran for a TD and some other gains, which we really needed.

MM is going to cost us a game sooner or later.

LOL. I think the 6 downvotes are for the comment about MM. My comment really was about the failure to use the middle of the field again, despite now having some weapons. Again I watched RR tip toeing the sidelines (why, oh why?) and didn't see Cook running the seam. People are very touchy about criticism of TT and MM just now.

It could have been about Nelson too, but I think most would acknowledge the justice of my comment about Nelson not looking like a #1 WR. Timing was off btw AR and Nelson, but the important thing is he ran some real routes, made some cuts, caught some passes, got hit, and got up. On the TD, Jacksonville was in a zone; Nelson just settled in a soft spot. Had AR seen Nelson a second earlier, it would have been an easy pitch and catch, but instead AR threw a laser that just beat a breaking DB and Nelson showed good concentration and hands and snagged the pass while diving sort of sideways to create separation.

Randall and Rollins got beat, but they also made some nice plays throughout the game. Now, if they play the same way against the Vikings, Lions or Titans, then we should be concerned.

Lane Taylor held up fine against good competition.

I think the Jags are a good team. Can't agree with many posters above who think that this was a poor win against an easy team. This was a road win against a team that is going to compete for its division.

Jags look 8-8 in an easy division. Just a decent team, nothing more. I had a higher opinion before I watched them. Jack is lost right now - if he can play at a high level, particularly if it is at MLB rather than weak LB (where he looked better), that could turn the D into something.

I totally agree. The Jags are a good team and they are ascending for sure and it was 105 degrees on the field.

I just still have issues with the offense. I think the concepts have not changed sufficiency to force more Zone. McCarthy is too stubborn, he needs to return to being the flexible offensive mind of 2010. I wish we could go back and look at that Packers Patriots game. It's a completely different level of creativity.

Let's look at the good and not so good.

Good:

Pass Pro
Eddie Lacy
Run Defense (No, Ivory wouldn't have made a difference. We had how many TFLs? Yea.)
Aaron Rodgers
Tackling

Not so good:

Inconsistent ILB play (excluding Joe Thomas)
Offense in the clutch (poor plays/execution)
Inside pass rush
Passing game (still synchronizing?)
Did James Starks do something wrong? 4 carries??

I don't know what some of you expect in game 1, but I'm excited for this team. Outside of our Offense's last possession and 1 other Red Zone failure (O- Line fault) I am pleased with the performance. It's Week 1 and The Jags aren't a talentless team. Give them some credit. I can't fully blame any of our DBs today. They went up against a helluva trio and only gave up 1 TD.

Well stated, Drealyn! I would point out that the O seemed to gas-up once Jordy's timing with Aaron started clicking and the sensational throw and catch by Aaron and Adams.

Our Offense left the defense in some precarious field position for a while, so give them credit too.
Thumbs up to:
Thomas, Datone, Perry, Matthews, and Randall(don't forget Haha's big hit either). Also, unsung were Guion and Daniels, who must have played a large number of snaps.
ILBs played better 2nd half.
LIttle worried about the coverage of Morgan & Gunter. Not so much about Rollins....yet. Pass rush has to be more consistant and with no need to blitz as much.

Offense....my biggest concern besides the play calls late, was the 4 potential delay of game penalties (we took 2 TOs) including one to open the 2nd half?

Yeah, that delay of game at the start of the 3rd and back to back timeouts late into the 4th is ridiculous. Rodgers knows better.

Holmes - what are you talking about? Drea and Robinson both praised Thomas. Even Bundy didn't mention Thomas. I think you may have misread somewhere or this is a reply fail (i.e., meant to be a reply to another post).

Agree with you Al on many points. I really think that if the Jags would have tied the game we actually would have been 2nd guessing the 3 runs after 1st and goal from the 9? Then the toss sweep call on 2nd and one.
As it is, we won against a much better team than most are giving credit to.

Agree. We could have won it easily. TD instead of FG on 3-run first and goal (audible miscommunication on 3rd down). No one has mentioned this yet, but Cobb gets a TD if he doesn't bobble the catch on the 20 yd. That's an 8 pt differential if we had executed properly.

Those things will work themselves out as the season goes on. Same thing with Aaron to Cook and Jordy. It's just Week 1. Lot of upside.

Why would you not second guess it? Youve got rogers, jordy, cobb endzone. Just like seattle playoff, you never used your weapons, it was lacy left lacy right, field goal.

At least they made the FG, which is nice.

Your boy Blair Walsh looks like he's settled into playoff form, what with the missed FGs and XP. You have to like the fact that Rick Spielman isn't satisfied with just crapping the bed. He insists on rolling around in it, too.

Skol!

AR had pretty good time usually. Expected more out of the WRs. Jordy played, nothing special other than playing, getting hit, etc. Adams got open a bit, great catch and a drop, maybe two. Cobb rather disappointing, thought he had a drop too. Not sure how many snaps Abby, Monty, etc., got.

Martinez looked pretty good, Ryan looked okay, much better than the last preseason game. Multiple PI calls not made against Shields, Randall. Burnett looked shaky - has trouble in coverage like I predicted. Pass rush didn't strike terror in Jacksonville; mostly coverage sacks. Run D better than I anticipated: heck, a lot better than I thought it would be. Hurns, Robinson, Thomas stats all will look fine.

Sorry double post. Thomas looked like he belonged. Taylor fine in run blocking; okay in pass pro with a couple (3) hurries. Punter looked like Masthay when the pressure was on, lucked out when a holding call on that punt added 10 yards.

That is kind of pointlessly insulting, as First Impressions is the same concept as Gut Reactions; it is a direct replacement. Regardless, Nagler has a paying gig and is unlikely to write many Gut Reactions.

A win is a win. And in the NFL a road win is as good as gold. But there were some wtf moments there at the end.

2nd and 2 and you run a pitch sweep to the slowest lead back in the NFL? Then two timeouts in a row? Then a crappy punt? Then a hold on 4th and long?

The Pack was not watching out for my blood pressure today. But they got a road win. So its all good in the end.

He does go for it on 4th down alot. How about the onside kick to open the 2nd half in the superbowl? He certainly won't give up the whole playbook in week one. He's better than run, run, pass mike sherman. That being said he will make some predictable conservative calls but all coaches will.

Has there ever been anyone as insanely inconsistent as Adams? James Jones for his first few years with the Packers. Drop some easy catches, then make an impossible catch.

It seems like the Packers' O starts the season in fits and sputters since they stopped playing them in pre-season (the last 2-3 yrs?). It seems to take them 2-3 games to get going.
Fortunately, next week they face a team that missed 3 field-goals and whose offense didn't score a TD.

The team needs to develop that rhythm. I didn't see much of Cook, though. But let's all be positive,Jordy being back will help the offense. And, yes McCarthy is too conservative. It's better to put them away quickly than to gamble for the last five minutes.

I had a feeling this game may end up tighter then most thought.

Jaguars are an up and coming team. Playing them the first game of the year in that heat is no joke.

Very good tough win. Were there mistakes, yes. Do they have things to improve on, yes. Overall though a good way to start the season. With a victory on the road.

Seems like more Jax players were cramping than Packer players. My biggest fear was the heat. I've seen when the Packers have looked like shit in these types of games in the past. This is their 3rd game on the road with the 2 pre season games. That stadium had a lot of empty seats, guess their fans couldn't handle the heat. Rusty but 1-0, I'll take it. The Packers made this closer than they should have.

An ugly win for sure, but then I like close games. Maybe not this close but it does make the game more exciting. I'm happy knowing I was wrong about our run D and O-line........so far anyway. I hope pass protection up the middle gets better along with clock management
Time out/time out...really...lol...that was more embarrassing than the Masthay punt or some of the questionable play calls.
Still a good game against a hungry team.
Go Pack!!!

From the season ender in Arizona to this one, the Packers always seem to find a way to make it terrifying / interesting.

Happy with the win, but lots of work to do. I hope Shields is OK and we escape relatively unscathed since health has not been on our side the majority of the past 5-6 years.

There's always a lot of overreaction in week 1, good or bad. Lots of football left to play, now it's time to spoil the Vikings party next week.
