Packers trade Rashan Gary to the Cowboys
Green Bay will receive the Cowboys 4th round pick in 2027.
By PackerAaron
The Green Bay Packers have reportedly moved on from one of the cornerstones of their recent defensive front with the team reportedly trading Rashan Gary to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2027 4th Round pick.
Gary, the Packers’ first-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, has spent the entirety of his career in Green Bay. He finishes his Packers career with 46.5 quarterback sacks.
For Dallas, the move represents a clear effort to bolster their pass rush heading into the upcoming season. Adding a player with Gary’s pedigree and experience gives the Cowboys another proven weapon on the defensive line and reinforces their commitment to getting after opposing quarterbacks.
From Green Bay’s perspective, the move signals a shift along the defensive front and potentially opens the door for younger players to step into larger roles starting with Lukas Van ness. With the Packers continuing to reshape their roster and look toward the future, acquiring additional draft capital—even if it’s a Day 3 pick in 2027—adds another asset for Brian Gutekunst and the front office to work with down the line.

I found t his funny because I was predicting Gary would have been the player moved in last years trade with Parsons. This leaves them thin at Edge now but with money to spend.

There was no mention of a CAP hit. Don't the Packers have to pay something for his signing bonus that they habitually kick down the road?

There will be a dead cap hit here but they should save a lot more over all.

Cap savings of $10.98M, so ~$11M. Unless the trade won't be finalized until June, but I think GB should get the signed paperwork into the league offices before someone stages an intervention down there in Dallas.
I assumed that GB would have to pay a lot of Gary's $19.5M in cash that he is owed this year, but yeah, there was no mention of that.

Thegreatreynoldo

That was the cap number scheduled for Gary in 2027, yes. I think you have to have a subtle mind to conclude that they save the $31M as well, though. To my mind, GB saved $11M. I mean, how do you know that Green Bay won't trade for him next year or that dallas won't release him only to watch GB pay him $31M?
I prefer thinking about the $31M as undefined, the term mathematicians use for dividing by 0. For me, the future $31M is moot as being part of an unrealized future. To realize it, one must travel to a different dimension.
Crap, now I have the Time Warp running through my mind.

Excellent move by Gutey if this compensation is correct! I was expecting the Pack to get a bag of doorknobs back for Gary if anything. This 4th round 2027 pick in return is basically equivalent to the compensory pick the Packers would have gotten if Gary was eligible for free agency today and left for signing a $15 million to $20 million AAV contract. I'll take it.

This is akin to the old joke, 'Take my wife...please!" Gary was a mid-level first round pick with lots of experience in the pro game. He also was owed a boat load of money. The Packers pick up some cap space but the compensation back should have been a third rounder at least. How can an experienced former top pick get so little compensation?

Not one single person in an NFL front office gives a pinch of mongoose crap if he was a former top pick. Once a guy is drafted, the only thing that matters is price and performance (and maybe age/durability).
A fourth round pick for Gary is a pleasant surprise.

March 09, 2026 at 10:17 am
A 4th rounder next year is conventionally valued as a 5th. However, we also dump a significant portion of that contract, which has value. Overall, it’s a good return at this point on a player we overpaid. Now we have to use the chance to players who can actually get to the QB more often in rotation. I’d start with bringing back Cox if his price is reasonable and looking at some of the second tier FAs to replace Gary and Enagbare and give us some penetrative depth options behind Parsons, Sorrell and LVN.
murf7777
March 09, 2026 at 10:29 am
I believe it was $31M in cap savings in 2027, which is quite a bit! I also didn’t expect to get a 4th-round pick, so in my opinion, it was a win-win. Gary wasn’t worth the amount we were paying him, but on a lesser contract, he has value to another team. There’s still value in a guy who gets 8 sacks a year, regardless of how some felt he played in the second half of the season. Plus, he’s a very good run defender.

I didn't think they'd be able to move him without restructuring his deal to take on some of the cash value. In this case, Dallas gets him without having to bid for him on a presumed cut.
Dragon5

He's hit on a few big splashy FAs with an open purse and kudos for an exceptional draft acumen in rounds 4 and beyond. However, brick by brick, his poor execution is slowly encasing this franchise in failure--and the dreaded tear-down / reset ultimately beckons despite Policy reupping BOTH Gute & MLF.
Sign Zaire Franklin in his enemy year🤦♂️. Restructuring (doubling down) on Banks--more bricks in the wall. An OX🐂, Banks enters his enemy year of the GOAT🐐 next February and Gute still has his fantasy of an All-Pro starting guard.
"Per Spotrac's projections, following the restructure, releasing or trading Banks in 2027 will leave the Packers with an enormous dead cap hit of $26.29 million.
In other words, the Packers likely believe he will stick around for at least two more seasons and have confidence he will improve. After handing Banks a $77 million contract in free agency, he battled injuries, missed two games, and ranked 66th among 81 guards for PFF grades." [source: Lombardiave dot com]
Micah Parsons was a Hail Mary; he nor Jordan Love will save him. The former will have high expectations despite coming off an ACL; unfair regardless of stature...the latter has shown he cannot overcompensate to mask team deficiencies like his predecessor.
I will once again reiterate for the nth time, we have Brian Gutekunst, born in an OX🐂 year, making personnel decisions for a franchise founded in a GOAT🐐 year. OX🐂 & GOAT🐐 are enemy signs⚠️‼️ What could go wrong!?!? I liken the direction of this team under Gute's leadership to that of an addict wasting away--Layne Staley like. At least Staley delivered amazing talent.

Was Ron Wolf's year a positive one for the franchise's year? If so, you da man. If not, this is still entertaining.
Dragon5
March 09, 2026 at 10:52 am
Wolf was born in a Tiger🐅 year. He made OUTSTANDING moves in his enemy year of the MONKEY in '92 trading for Favre, hiring Holmgren, and signing Reggie White (Reggie was an OX--astrology / numerology are not perfect, but they forecast an overwhelming majority--if you knew you would win 7 out of 10 times, you'd take that edge, right?). He flopped in the first two rounds of the '92 draft (T-Buck, D'Onofrio) but did draft Brooks, Bennett, McNabb, Chewy. Consensus? From a professional standpoint, he exceeded the odds during his enemy year quite handsomely.
Metaphysically, this year (HORSE) and next year (GOAT) are the two most opportune seasons for Packers to win Super Bowl. Why?
1) 2026 Horse year--horse is secret friend of Goat (Packers)
2) 2027 Goat year for Goat franchise
3) Our QB, a Tiger, has positive outlook in 2026 Horse year within the Tiger/Dog/Horse trine

"but they forecast an overwhelming majority-"
C'mon, man. You really think everyone who was born in the same lunar year has the same fortune as everyone else?
Seems pretty flimsy to me- I mean, I went to a public school, and nearly everyone in my class was born within the lunar year of the Water Ox. I can tell you from first hand experience, as anyone who is being honest can attest to... vastly different outcomes and situations amongst my schoolmates on a day to day basis, or even over the long haul. Let's not even mention twins- fraternal or identical- who are sometimes wildly different personalities and can have entirely different life experiences.
Fun hobby? Something to pass the time? Sure, knock yourself out. Believing astrology/zodiac to be an accurate predictor/forecast of trends in success, love, trials, tribulations for "a vast majority"? That's pretty far out there.

When Gary was drafted by the Packers I believed that he had all the tools to become a force and a team wrecker for the Packers defense. It never materialized.
Ultimately Gute is responsible for yet another first round pick that has not worked out for the Packers. Not only did Gute use an early first round pick to draft Gary he gave him a hefty second contract which will still cost the Packers $17 million in dead cap space.
I'm glad that at least the Packers received even a small return for Gary but in terms of ROI Gute has once again squandered significant draft and cap capital for a very small return. Gute is considered by many to be a top GM but after 8 seasons as the Packers GM he seems to be a middle of the road GM at this point.

A concise analysis of Gary by '61.
The only thing i differ about is i wasn't all that excited when he got drafted.
All i heard and read about him was his 'potential'
I thought he was a serious reach at the time, and the way he blubbered like a baby when his name was picked seemed odd.
Like he won the lottery.
His mommy coming out to defend his college career also seemed odd.
His college career, his draft slot, his second contract, was all rooted in 'potential.'
I would assume this trade (in Dallas eyes) is also rooted in potential
After 81 million dollars and 7 years,....good riddance.

I originally supported Gary based on his size, speed etc... I don't follow college football but I thought he was a good selection at the time. I continued to post my support for him up until his injury which it appears he never fully recovered from.
In any case his performance declined and he never became the game wrecker that he should have evolved into.
I don't know how much is him and how much is on the coaches. I do know that there is no excuse for his failure to hustle while he was on the field which became very obvious during the 2025 season.
I'm glad he is gone and that the Packers have moved on. Thanks, Since '61

It will be interesting to see if the same problems Gary had in GB will also be displayed in Dallas. In short, he fades as the season goes on. He doesn't finish rushes to get sacks, and seems at times to be cruising rather than going all out. Suggesting that the Cowboys have found a key piece to their QB pressure problems doesn't make sense. Time to let the younger, hungrier players get a chance to show what they can do.

"The grade for the trade gets an A, with the Packers managing to get a pretty decent draft pick for a player most assumed would be released. The trade will move up to an A-plus if some of the savings is used to add a missing piece to a good-but-not-great defense."

Other than Parsons, the next highest sack total by an edge was 2 now that Gary is gone. That’s not sustainable if one wants to succeed. We need to move on from more than Gary. We need to let Enagbare move on too. We have LVN this year as a run first player. We need to add players who can pick up 5 or 6 sacks now not 1 or 2.

I think you cover everything I would say.
Packers will be in the market for a OLB/DE type. As a team that sees itself as a contender, to just rely on getting more snaps to LVN, Cox, Oliver, or Sorrell and hoping that will do the trick with regard to pass rush would be playing with fire. It could be that they see Brooks playing some snaps on the outside in even alignments. That still means they need effective players in the front 4.

The Cowboys were 22nd in rushing yards allowed last year. They were 32nd in passing yards allowed and 30th in total yards allowed. So it wasn't such a good year for their D line, or their defense in general. Gary does provide value as a run stopper but doesn't bring a whole lot of pass rush.

Gary is a show-boat and may actually perform well for 4-5 games. He lacks character and tenacity so his possible 'comeback' will be short-lived.
It is of utmost importance to judge a player's character before an initial signing and offering a second contract. Gary and Alexander gave plenty of examples of self-centered, 'me-first' behavior throughout their tenure.
Compare and contrast with Love, Kraft, Jacobs, etc.

When he was at Mich, it was the year that I think Bosa got hurt, and instead of coming back to his team he made the decision to quit college ball and spend his time getting pumped up for the combine.
Gary got injured too, nothing real serious but he would miss some games and the word was he was thinking of doing a Bosa. When the doctors cleared him to play he said " I know my body I will determine when I can return and when I cant". I knew then, hey you have team that you play on this game isnt about you and your combine. What a selfish guy please Gutt dont take this loser.

A fourth rounder a year delayed is usually considered to have a present day value of a 5th rounder.
I wrote an article (not published yet - Maybe this evening) that was less than complimentary about Gute after the Rhyan extension and the Banks restructure. I like the players but I did not love everything about the Niemann and Chris Brooks deals, either.
One thing Gute is spectacular at is getting compensation by trading questionable players. A 4th for Clinton Dix? A 4th/5th for Gary? Damn, dude.

Cowboys founded in a RAT🐀 year, are in their enemy year of the HORSE🐎. No Lombardi🏆for you! High odds acquiring Gary helps them sink quicker this year👏...he is likely to be a much bigger burden in '27 while in his enemy year.

I was one of those excited when we drafted Gary. However, as Since’61 succinctly posted, Gary’s 1st rnd status “never materialized.” His good performances were sporadic and as many have stated, he seemed to fade down the stretch, much like Zadarius.
But, I’m happy we were able to get a draft pick for him in return…and some additional cap space. I wonder who we are targeting. Tomlinson, Cam Jordan, Calias Campbell, et al are in my list, although they are not necessarily edge rushers.
We’re gonna be good.
Go Packers!!!

Gary had a couple of good runs of productivity. Never for an entire season, though. He was looking like a successful first round pick at one point, around the time he signed the second contract. (Although there were plenty of detractors, and I have to say they turned out to be right.) Mostly he was a solid but unspectacular player.

Not a good pick, and a worse decision to resign him. I’m guessing the Cowboys have an agreed renegotiated contract for him. I’m ok with the trade but it’s not fair to look at it without looking at the actual pick and extension.

4th round pick vs a possible nothing if and when the Packers would have released Gary...I like the former compared to the latter.
We've gotten a few gems in the fourth round of the draft over the years and if we get lucky we may land a David Bakhtiari, Mike Daniels, J.T. Lang, Josh Sitton, or if we really strike it rich we could land a clone of Jerry Kramer all of whom were selected by the Packers in the fourth round of NFL drafts.

I was a fan of Gary when we got him , seems he never was that guy, I can't believe it's been 7 years, always waiting on him to have that big year he never did, Parsons goes down and he didn't even step up his game.

Sure, let's be happy that GB got a 4th round pick for a top 10 pick that costs us dearly waiting for him to achieve nothing and giving him a second deal that will cost us dearly after his departure. This doesn't soften the bad Parsons deal that Jerry took us for in his all-out gamble to be rid of Parsons, which I still expect to be seen whenever the pass rusher only returns. We should have traded for Crosby and a draft pick for Parsons. Yeah, I said it and stick by it. Crosby over Parsons any day, every day.
Let's close the door on Gary and never mention his worthless ass name again here.
Didn't Lions fans cheer crazily when GB selected him? LOL

I’m sorta with you Taryn regarding Crosby—he’s more of a game wrecker than Parsons. But I like Parsons too. I strongly believe had he not gotten hurt, we would’ve reached the NFC championship game.
I wish we could somehow/someway, add Hendrickson—he’s much like Crosby imo. Make ms plays at crucial moments.

Good. Adios.
Back pocket R4 next year. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the deal also included a bag of Frito's.
Excellent. Addition by subtraction.

GARY STOP playing mid season last year. Knew Packers aren’t going anyplace. So he stayed healthy so the pay check gets coming in.
ITS THAT SIMPLE
BUT LETS TALK RYHAN AT CENTER. HIGHESTBPAID CENTER IN THE LEAGUE AND GRADED OUT THE WORSE…..
SHOULD HAVE KEPT JOSH MYERS FOR A LOT LESS. AND JUST AS GOOD
OH WELL"…….YOU KNOW WHAT SAVES GUTEY EVERY YEAR THE PAYROLL GOES UP SO HE CAN MAKEVTHE SAME DUMB MISTAKES EVERY YEAR
IF THEY PAYROLL DIDNT GO UP EVERY YEAR SO He would HAVE TO ACTUALLY MAKE A TEAM. WE WOULD BE 2-15.
But wait. Last year lost 5 in a row and year before 3 in a row. THATS NOT CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL.
HE OVERPAID FOR GARY. OVER PAID FOR BANKS. OVERPAID FOR RYHAN. HOBSS MCMANUS OR MCMISS
I BET MAILK NUMBERS WILL BE BETTER THAN LOVE NEXT YEAR

Gute picked up the SMITHS and then chose Gary as well in the draft in the first round....The DL was always marginal...later the DE-OLB position was marginal. Gary never lived up to what Gute wished he had to offer and GUTE NEVER DID THE DL ANY FAVORS BY MAKING IT A FORCE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN....Even with Parsons trade the DL was still marginal...Gute has a lot of overhauling at the DE AND DL positions still to be done before GB is going anywhere in the playoffs...if we even get there.

Wow what a great move by Gutey. I was resigned to losing Gary for nothing but cap relief. Getting a 4th in 2027 is a huge bonus. Gary should have been a 2nd round pick at best when we drafted him, a 4th is great compensation for a player we were going to cut.
Sign A J Epenesa for $5 million per year will offset losing Gary just fine.

If GB could somehow get some draft capitol back for Jenkins, this would be a tremendous start to free agency. Or even a solid veteran, young CB.
How about trade Hobbs to the Cowboys for Shavon Revell? They need a slot CB badly and we need a boundary CB. Revell was a 3rd round pick but was projected higher. Dallas is like Green Bay south right now.

Thank goodness were done with this flunky. Hated the pick before day one. I posted her numerous times how I was hoping, begging Gutt would not draft this loser. Why? As am M fan I watched how he was suppose to be the coming and really did very little. Oh, he had his days against Rutgers but when we played the better teams he went missing in action or had a boo boo and had to miss the game.
His problem and this one the pre draft analyst who picked him in the second or early third had right. He lacked upper body strength to deal with the bigger O linemen he would meet in the NFL. He would pass as a fill in but he would never amount to a top notch pass rusher.
I compared him to another Michigan guy Perry. Perry and Gary. One went to M and the other gave M the finger - high school phenom in Michigan and went to USC. Both had the same thing in common, they went missing in games. Perry went un noticed after we traded him and Gary will too. Were lucky today. Last year it was Zaire and Stokes we dumped to get better, this year its Gary.

After Garys horrible second half of the season, I guess this is what you would expect... very disappointing in what almost appeared his lack of effort, giving up ? especially when they needed him the most. The Bears got a second and fifth rounder for Roquan Smith a couple years ago I was hoping the Packers might get a 3rd and a seven for Gary. But they did get 46.5 sacks out of Gary and a fourth round Pick.. no complaints here

Hendrickson too expensive & not a 3-4 DE
bargain bin rotational 3-4 DEs: Clowney, Jordan, Chubb...
STAY AWAY FROM the RAT🐀CHUBB!!! 👉ENEMY YEAR🐎👈
NT/DE Calais Campbell is born in a TIGER🐅 year and despite his age, would be expected to exceed expectations in a friendly HORSE🐎 year.
Concern: elders folding like a tent in cold weather...after watching 4 decades of Packer games, the performance drop-off is noted✅
