Packers Snaps Counts V. Carolina: Week 16, 2023

OT Luke Tenuta, RB Emanuel Wilson, and TE Luke Musgrave were moved from IR to the 21-day Practice Window but none of them were activated for today's game.  The Packers promoted Safety Benny Sapp and WR Bo Melton from the practice squad.  AJ Dillon and Jaire Alexander returned to action against the Panthers.  The inactive players due to injury were Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Darnell Savage, and presumably, DeVondre Campbell.  OLB Brenton Cox, OT Caleb Jones, and CB Robert Rochell were healthy scratches.  QB Sean Clifford was active but did not play.

Player Snaps % STs
Myers 66 100 6/20%
Jenkins 66 100 None
Walker 66 100 6/20%
Tom 66 100 6/20%
Runyan 33 50 6/20%
Rhyan 33 50 6/20%
Newman 1 2 6/20%
Nijman     6/20%

The offensive line opened up some holes as run blockers, particularly in the first half.  The Packers finished with 162 yards rushing on 34 carries, for a 4.8-yard average.  The running game was particularly strong in the first half as the Packers gained 117 yards on 18 carries, good for a 6.5-yard average.  The Packers had 5 possessions in the first half (including the final possession when they got the ball with just 18 seconds left in the half).  The Packers scored on each of their first four possessions (2 touchdowns and 2 field goals).  Things got a little more sluggish in the second half as the Packers rushed 16 times for 45 yards (2.81-yard average).  The Packers also had five possessions in the second half, but punted on three of them.  Worse, they were all three and outs.  The pass protection was good.  Love was hit twice and sacked once.  Love scrambled once.

Rhyan continues to get equal snaps regardless of whether Runyan is having a better game.  I generally support that decision since Rhyan will be back for 2024 and Runyan will be an unrestricted free agent.  Newman came in as a tackle eligible on a goal line play.  Nijman did not alternate with Walker at left tackle, and rightfully so: Walker has won that spot rather decisively.

Player Snaps % STs
Kraft 61 92 14/47%
Sims 20 30 10/33%
Deguara 15 23 18/60%

Kraft caught 4 of 6 targets for 60 yards.  He continues to play almost every play.  Kraft appeared to be favoring an arm or shoulder towards the end of the game and did not return to the field.  Kraft's blocking has improved in general.  The Packers are no longer asking him to block DEs and big OLBs as much, or when they do, they have another players, sometimes a TE or a RB, there to help him.  Kraft has been a bright spot.  Sims and Deguara had no statistics other than a fumble recovery by Deguara.  The Packers have been running a play during which the TE goes into motion and reverses his direction after crossing the center to cut the backside DE or OLB.  Deguara cut OLB Brian Burns to spring Aaron Jones for his long run.  The block was rather inelegant, but it got the job done.  There was some suggestion that Musgrave might return in time for next week's Vikings game.  That would be great, but I hope the Packers can pair Kraft up with Musgrave at times.  Fingers crossed that Kraft's injury won't necessitate him missing any time.

Player Snaps % STs
Jones 34 52
Taylor 20 30 16/53%
Dillon 12 18

Aaron Jones gained 127 yards on 21 carries for a 6.0-yard average.  He caught 1 of 3 targets for 8 yards, including a pass poorly placed by Love.  There is no question that the offense is much better with a fully healthy Jones.  He can turn short gains into long gains much better than Dillon or Taylor can.  While Jones, Dillon, and Taylor are all reliable pass-catchers, Jones can run a more diverse route tree and also provides the threat of a mismatch if lined up against an ILB.  Yet, he is getting older.  He played in his 9th game out of 15 so far, and just recorded his 100th rushing attempt of the 2023 season.  And his average is down to 4.3-yards per carry.  Easy to say just use a second round pick in 2024 and let Jones go, but the Packers did use a second round pick on Dillon.  I don't want Dillon back as the number one running back in 2024.  This will be a tough decision for the Packers, who have plenty of positions in need of attention during next year's draft.

Dillon gained 12 yards on 7 carries, a 1.7-yard average.  He was used primarily in short yardage situations, and appeared to be on a snap count as he nurses a broken thumb.  Dillon did score a touchdown and continues to run hard.  Taylor gained 4 yards on 3 carries and caught his only target for minus one yard, though it was a play that was doomed from the start: its failure had nothing to do with Taylor's ability.

Player Snaps % STs
Doubs 58 88
Heath 51 77
Wicks 26 39
Melton 25 38
Toure 7 11

Doubs caught 4 of his 5 targets for 79 yards.  Doubs caught his only target in the first half for 13 yards.  He was the only wide receiver on the team to catch a pass in the second half.  Indeed, of the wide receivers, only Doubs (4) and Melton (2) were targeted in the second half.  Love's other 3 second-half attempts were one each to Kraft, Jones, and one was a throwaway.  Kraft caught his target for a big 20-yard gain down to the Carolina 13-yard line.  Melton caught 4 of his 6 targets for 44 yards, including all 4 of his targets for 44 yards in the first half.  We know Melton has blazing speed, but he also caught some comebacks and looked like he could run most of the route tree.  It makes one wonder why Melton has been stuck on practice squads now that he is getting some snaps.  Wicks caught both of his targets for 29 yards, including a touchdown during which he knew he was going to take a hit.  Unfortunately, he left the game near the end of the first half and did not return.  One also wonders why Wicks did not get more snaps earlier in the season, though he had some injuries.  Heath caught his only target for no yards.  I like the toughness and physicality Heath brings to a team that needs it, but that's a lot of snaps for zero yards.  Toure did not catch either of his 2 targets.

Player Snaps % STs
Love 66 100
Clifford DNP

Love completed 17 for 28 attempts (60.71%) for 219 yards (7.82 yards/attempt) with 2 TDs and 0 interceptions.  He had a passer rating of 109.1 for the game and 101.6 in the first half.  Love completed 5 of 9 passes for 85 yards in the second half.  Kraft caught a 20-yard pass, Doubs caught 3 of 4 for 66 yards and Taylor caught a pass for minus 1.  Love scrambled once for 11 yards and added another yard on a sneak for a touchdown.  Love was poised and in control.  It was a solid outing.

Player Snaps % STs
Clark 52 79
Wyatt 38 58 4/13%
Slaton 34 52 10/33%
Brooks 17 26 8/27%
Wooden 8 12 4/13%

The defensive line was all about pass rush against Carolina, and there was a good amount of it.  While Wyatt and Clark were the only linemen to record quarterback hits, the push was very good all day, allowing Preston Smith to have a fine day.  The line did not make many tackles.  Wyatt led the way with 3 assisted tackles.  Clark, Brooks and Wooden each added one assist and Slaton had one solo tackle.   Carolina RBs gained 46 yards on 19 carries, a 2.42-yard average.  WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette (2 for 33 yards and a TD) and QB Young (4 for 17) added 50 yards on 6 carries.

Player Snaps % STs
Walker 65 98
McDuffie 49 74 9/30%
Smith 40 61
Gary 40 61
Enagbare 30 45 15/50%
Van Ness 20 30 8/27%
Wilson     24/80%
Welch     19/63%

McDuffie had 8 tackles (5 solo) including a tackle for loss.  Quay Walker had 5 tackles (1 solo) and a half sack.  Preston Smith had 3 tackles (2 solo) and 4 quarterback hits.  Gary had 2 solo tackles and 1 QB hit.  Van Ness had 2 assisted tackles and 2 QB hits (and another wiped out by a roughing penalty).  He also ran into the punter to give Carolina a new set of downs.  Enagbare had 2 assists. The Packers hit Bryce Young 10 times and had 2 sacks.  They probably would have had more hits and sacks but Young has some wheels on him when he chooses to use them.  He had no problem gaining the corner on Green Bay's edge players.  The other reason is that Young got the ball out quickly by necessity.  Young started out wild high and also off the mark, as well, but he settled in.

Player Snaps % STs
Owens 65 98 14/47%
Alexander 65 98 2/7%
Johnson 65 98
Stokes 63 95
Nixon 56 85 14/47%
Ford 6 9 14/47%
Valentine 2 3 2/7%
Ballentine     20/67%
Anderson     17/57%
Sapp     14/47%
Long     8/27%

The Packers cannot cover anyone.  One would think with a good pass rush the defense would take away quick hitters but that didn't happen.  Young was 7 or 15 in the first half.  Part of that should not be credited to the Packers because some of his throws resembled foul balls in baseball: they were not even near the playing field much less a player.  Young was 16 of 21 in the second half.  He settled in.  He had to get the ball out quickly and there was always somewhere to go, plus with his speed he could escape the pocket when necessary.  I don't understand why Ford is in the doghouse.  Johnson was brutal in coverage and when he wasn't committing penalties.  Is it simply because Ford might not return in 2024?  I am not at all sure that Stokes is superior to Valentine, but I can see why they want to see what Stokes has.  Still, not picking up Stokes' fifth year option next May seems like a foregone conclusion.  Carolina had 3 decent receivers in Chark, Thielen and Tremble, who combined for 86 first-half yards but added 165 yards in the second half to finish with 251 yards between those three players.  The Packers do not have 3 DBs who can cover.

Johnson had 8 tackles (6 solo).  Owens had 6 tackles (4 solo) and the only pass breakup.  Stokes had 5 tackles (4 solo).

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Whelan punted 3 times for a 47.3-yard gross and net average.  Carlson made both of his field goals, including a 53-yarder.  He missed an extra point after a high snap, though I thought Whelan did a good job getting it down reasonably well.  Green Bay continues to be the most heavily penalized team on special teams.  They have taken a step back.

RB: 1.0

TE 1.45

WR: 2.53

DL: 2.26 (a little low)

ILB: 1.73

OLB: 1.97

DB: 4.88

No doubt about it: when Jones is healthy, he's the man.

Packers got lucky at the end of the game. Panthers ran out of time. or they might have won the game. As usual, Packer defense could not hold down a two-touchdown lead late in the fourth quarter.

I don't know why I keep forgetting to put in the info on position/snap on average. Some might notice that the defense doesn't add up to 11.0. For some reason, NFLgsis indicated that Carolina's QB and all of their linemen played 65 snaps but that the result was 98%. So I used 66 snaps when calculating how many DL (etc.) on average were on the field per snap. Odd.

That said, it looks like Carolina ran 65 offensive plays and GB ran 66. Time of possession was close, 28 and change for GB to 31 and change for Carolina. *Yes, GB only had the ball for 12 minutes and 55 seconds of the second half, so Carolina had it 17:05, but that isn't enough to explain a defensive collapse.

Still, the offense looks legit. Considering they played some teams with good defenses and put up reasonable amounts of points with a weak RG and OC, and a LT who was learning and improving through reps, and often enough without their #1 WR and #1 RB, it was rather promising.

I am less sanguine about the defense. The DL is just okay. I don't think Clark should be a team's best defensive lineman, and Slaton and Wyatt look like rotational guys. Waiting to see what Brooks (who has shown some promise) and Wooden turn out to be. The OLBs are fine as long as we can afford them, and the backups are fine. Quay Walker isn't good. Oozes talent, no production. Campbell is probably gone. McDuffie should not be a starter for anybody. The DBs are bad, at least now. Jaire can play. Valentine might blossom into a starter. Stokes? IDK. The safeties are really bad. It can be turned around. Wish GB had enough money for a judicious acquisition on defense or two.

I have been wondering, and even more so after reading your response, what position will we be drafting first in this coming year's draft. Originally, when we were not winning, I thought WR, specifically that stud from Ohio State. Then I was thinking OT to help solidify our OL. Also earlier, I wanted a stud DL but I don't know if there are any available early in the draft.

I realize that OT is a good position in the coming draft, but don't know if we can wait until round 2 or 3 and still get the OT we need. Will he be another of the many OT's that we have now learning the position and trying to take a step? We have quite a few of those.

Now I am wondering if DB is the answer. I do like Cooper Dejean out of Iowa. He can play CB or safety in college and not sure how that translates to the NFL. He is very fast and knows the game. He could also return punts as well if need be.

In summary, I am not sure what direction we need to go in the first part of the draft. We all pretty much know our needs, which are many, and I guess we should go with 'select the best player available' mantra.

HP: I am still stuck on LT as the best choice for the Packers #1. Walker is playing better and may be an NFL tackle, but I would prefer him at RT than LT. I would prefer Tom at center, Walker at RT and a high draft choice at LT. Let Runyon, Myers and Rhyan fight in out for RG. I think that could transform the Packer O-line without investing too many high picks (the second and third rounders) that are needed elsewhere (safety, ILB, RB, DT).

Guam, good points as usual.

I am thinking we need to draft an iol in the 3rd or 4th round as well.

You are thinking a lot of changes to the structure of the OL. Yet, LeFleur and coaches do not share your sentiment apparently.

I know a lot of posters want Barry gone. Do you want LaFleur gone as well? Part of me does want that with how he has handled his hiring and firing practices. That does not even point to his below average game planning and in game changes either.

I am not a LaFleur fan mostly for the reason you mentioned - he simply has not been good at selecting coaching staff. Between Mennenga, Drayton, Barry and Butkus, LaFleur has not chosen well. I just don't have any faith this guy can get the Packers to challenge for a Super Bowl against the better coached teams in the league.

De Jean played around 100 snaps in the box his last three years but only one snap deep. That really doesn't make him a safety to me. I guess a lot depends on who the new DC and DB coaches are but I'd rather see them draft a player with a lot more experience playing deep.

Some positions might be handier than others, I suppose, but the important thing is to get a good player. The Packers have plenty of holes. If the good player is a defensive lineman, that would be great. Ditto for a stud ILB, safety or CB. Same thing on offense. A LT would be swell. Also a #1 type WR. Probably set at TE. OG or OC would be good, especially if GB wins 1 or 2 more games and the pick is in the late teens.

If you aren’t going to play Stokes in tight coverage where he can use his length to compete, don’t bother. He’s not a good fit for playing off and he’s not good at it, but we know that from before his injury. Very similar to Valentine. Of course Barry continually lines both up way off.

Im not sure Alexander should have played. Seeing that arm trailing limply … to me a poor decision. Im not going to get in to the attitudinal speculation, but he looked like a guy we should just have sat. He can’t tackle at this point.

I thought Rhyan looked the better RT, though perhaps not a great test yesterday. Time to just start him. I agree with you on Ford. I thought LaFleur again took his foot off the gas in the second half. What is wrong with winning, especially with this D. He did Barry no favors (which he undoubtedly doesn’t deserve admittedly). That last drive was eerily reminiscent of last week’s fiasco. I’d let the intern coordinate on D over Barry at this point.

Stokes is just coming back from injury and really hasn't played much this year. I am hesitant to judge him just yet and would like to see him over the next two games before coming to any conclusions. I would also love to see him in a different scheme (press man) but that isn't going to happen.

"*Yes, GB only had the ball for 12 minutes and 55 seconds of the second half, so Carolina had it 17:05, but that isn't enough to explain a defensive collapse."

C'mon, TGR, the poor D didn't even have time to have an orange wedge and a juice box before they had to run allllll the way out on the field to play soft zone again. Plus, look what 19 seconds in Barry Time nearly accomplished. There are eddies in the space-time continuum when our D is on the field.

I am hesitant to agree with you on your statement "The Packers do not have 3 DBs who can cover." How can we know this when they are playing in this defensive scheme for this defensive coordinator? Their strengths coming out of the draft were their aggressiveness. IM holding out hope that a philosophy change can bring improvement. With that said, I wouldn't be upset if we went corner in Rd 1 or 2.

Who could positioned that far off and Ds just reading and targeting Barry’s zone holes each week? At some point you have to let players be in a position and you have to use their strengths. Barry does neither.

How often is there a DB in even rough proximity to a catch? When was the last truly contested catch by an opposing offense? It’s farcical. Plays more than players at this point. Wahle is right. All 22 of prior weeks is painful on that point.

speaks to Jaire's desire. He might be better one-armed than any of our other corners, and is truly someone you design your defense around when he's healthy. Sadly we don't have that architect on the coaching staff.

I'd love to see the top 3 picks go to interior O line. Even if Zach Tom plays C, and between Walker, Mt Caleb, Tenuta and Telfort they find they can hold down both OT positions.

Certainly some DBs are needed, and you can't expect any rookie to do what Rasul Douglas would.

I agree we can't really evaluate our DBs with this DC. Then again that's 3 OTs on the bench that aren't evaluated, and JB has nothing to do with that problem. MLF seems to be competing for who can be more incompetent.

Once again I could not watch the game because I live outside the viewing area. I find it interesting that the Packers could not cover with Alexander and Stokes playing most of the game. Was Berry using a lot of zone?

I watched the Dallas Miami game and neither of these good offensive teams scored 30 points. I want to see an aggressive hard hitting defense. Lay it on the line. Play to win not to try not to lose.

Teams have figured out Barry’s zones and tendencies. The Bucs particularly, but yesterday too they are picking OL up gaps in the zones and he’s not adjusting. Yes, a brief flirt with man early and then mostly so far off the DBs are playing as sweepers.

I think you're too harsh on the Cbs, even Secondary.
This Defense just isn't hungry.
And how could it be when every Article everywhere,
is looking for Barrys replacement.
Not only does the trade of Douglass still sting.
Were now back to Stokes.
Throwing Valentine's achievements down the shit hole.
I Was convinced there was a dog house.
But now I'm more convinced it's an out house.
From wanting a home, to being shunned and cast-out.

What are they waiting for?
Murphy to call Mlf upstairs and Fire someone?
It's that obvious. This team nearly beat themselves.
Instead of making things happen. With a Bam!
The spoiled little brats got their counts instead.
Anything you say coach??

I was really looking forward to this article, because I felt like I never saw Valentine. I was right. In my opinion, he’s currently the best cover corner on the team (and not a bad tackler either). I can’t believe they kept playing Stokes and injured-Alexander over him.

PackEyedOptimist, I think they played Stokes and Alexander to see how they would play and especially in Stokes case, do they sign him to a fifth year next year or do they determine that he is a bust?

We shall see. I like Valentine to a certain degree. He has shown some positive value being a late round pick but I am still not sure he is the answer.

---Of course D coach scheme counts for much, but many receivers have been wide open the last few games with DBs trailing far behind. I remember Stokes's name starting popping up in preseason reports that you had where he was being burnt by WRs , I believe two yrs ago. He has regressed, but I would still sign him to a one year deal if not too high.
-- IMO Jones will be too expensive to let go this year, and think he has enough value for one more season.
--- I believe we should have enough cap space for a free agent safety.
--- I think there is a spot for a hard nosed hustling LB like McDuffie on this team. Instead of an overpaid whiny Campbell.

Before Ja and Stokes came back we were all talking about who should play. It was very obviously a BAD idea to throw them right in to playing nearly every down right away. They needed more of an adjustment back to the speed of the game, as well as to protect from re-injury.

This coaching staff just keeps stacking failures. Even the things they do well they are not consistent with. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for the players.

It's believable if you want to draft a cb and not a Ot rd. 1.
It's also believable because Douglass was traded.
It's also believable because Gutey was a secondary ex coach.
It's also believable because of Stokes injuries.
It's also believable because the 5th year option should be declined.

how can a db cover when he is lined up ten yards off the ball? and thus conceding any slant and out pattern for at least 8 yards. We gave the Panther offense their best showing of the year as we narrowly missed 'winning' the worst team in the league trophy by a second at the end and the refs desperate not have to endure an overtime of more bad football

LeRoy Butler talks about how important it is to have an identity on defense, and also to have one base defensive play that they can go to and feel confident that they can stop just about anything, so when things start going south they can adjust back to a baseline. I tend to agree with that, not being a hall of famer myself.

TGR, Thanks for the numbers. Not being able watch most of the games your numbers become very important!

Merry Christmas to all the Packer fans out there. 🌲🎄

TGR,

maybe Rudy Ford wasn't in the doghouse at all. Maybe he barely cleared his injury designation and he just wasn't ready for more snaps? I fear they overused Stokes, Ja, and #33 too soon upon their return. I'd love to hear #33 is every bit as good now as he was before the game ...

I thought the defense played better with Valentine and Balentine starting. They hardly played this game.
