Packers Snap Counts Versus The Vikings: Week One

Packers get outcoached and out-worked in a loss to the Vikings.

The Packers elevated Micah Abernathy and Juwan Winfree from the practice squad.  The inactive players were Bakhtiari, Jenkins, and Lazard due to injuries, with Toure, Carpenter, Jean-Charles and Jonathan Ford being healthy scratches.  Offensive linemen Rasheed Walker and Sean Rhyan were active but did not play.

Elevating Abernathy made a good deal of sense.  Elevating Winfree when six wide receivers were active was more surprising.  Listing Jean-Charles as an inactive left the Packers with just four cornerbacks, and just the starting three after Nixon left the game.  And of course, not elevating a running back meant the Packers entered the game with just two running backs.  I suppose if the team does not plan to or feels it cannot use their running backs very much, having just two active makes more sense.

As a note, just prior to the game Ryan Wood tweeted the following: "LT David Bakhtiari will not play opener vs. Vikings, and will likely miss next week's home opener against the Bears. Don't be surprised if the team takes same approach with Elgton Jenkins."

The Packers offensive line had a rough day getting any push or opening holes for the backs.  Jones picked up ten yards and a first down on the Packers second play (just after Christian Watson dropped what should have been a 75-yard touchdown pass).  That run was around the right end.  After that, Jones carried the ball just two more times in the first half for 5 yards.  Dillon received 5 carries and picked up 11 yards (2.2 yard average) in the first half.  It did not matter much where the run was designed to go.  Watson added a reverse for 7 yards.

Down 17-0, the Packers were able to run the ball better in the second half.  That could be due to the Vikings playing softer and keeping their safeties deep, but better runs also coincided with the insertion of Zach Tom for Jon Runyan at left guard.  Runyan, who has been a solid and consistent player for the Packers, left the game with a concussion.  Aaron Jones had two carries in the second half for 34 yards, including a 29-yard run off left end.  Dillon got 5 more carries in the second half for 34 yards, including a 14 yard and an 11-yard run, both off left end.  Dillon caught 5 of 6 targets for 46 yards, including one pass from Jordan Love in garbage time for his long reception of 12 yards.

Jones caught 3 of 5 targets for 27 yards and a long of 22.  Per Andy Herman, Jones and Dillon had 25 touches for 155 yards and a 6.2 yard per touch average, while on the Packers other 31 plays the Packers gained 118 yards, a 3.8 yard average.  Jones and Dillon were on the field together about 7 times.  Jones and Dillon need to get more touches.

Romeo Doubs led the wide receivers with 37 yards on 4 receptions and 5 targets.  Christian Watson had 34 yards on 2 receptions, but his 25-yard reception came in garbage time.  Watkins chipped in 18 yards on 3 targets and Winfree caught his only target for 17 yards.  Tonyan caught 3 of his 5 targets for 37 yards.  Deguara had no stats in the first 59 minutes but grabbed two passes from Jordan Love for 28 yards in garbage time.  Tyler Davis played as many snaps as Deguara and caught one pass for 3 yards.  Amari Rodgers played no offensive snaps from scrimmage.

Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 34 passes for 195 yards (5.7 yards/attempt) with an interception.  That was good for a 67.7 passer rating.  He was sacked 4 times and hit 5 times.  He did seem to be under considerable pressure.  I thought he showed some wiggle in the pocket which enabled him to buy some time on several occasions but he was not really able to turn that extra time into positive plays.  I thought Rodgers made the wrong choices on some run-pass options and overall did not have a good day.

Jordan Love came in for the final 1 minute and 2 seconds.  He completed 4 of 5 passes for 65 yards (13 yards/attempt), good for a 118 passer rating.  The Vikings were playing a soft defense but Love can only play against the opponent and the scheme on the field against him.  He looked good in his limited action.

Many will wonder if Lazard's presence would have changed things on offense.  The Packers and Aaron Rodgers really do not use the middle of the field very much.  I can only remember a handful of pass attempts between the hash marks, such as a pass to Cobb, and prayer to Tonyan at the goal line despite double coverage, and a pass to Doubs when the two players were not on the same page.  Perhaps the Rodgers would have trusted Lazard over the middle more than the receivers on the field.  Lazard is also a good blocker, something the Packers were in need of.  I do remember Watkins missing a block on a quick pass, though Watkins has the reputation of being a fine blocking wide receiver.

We did not see the dominant defense that observers spoke of during practices.  Still, the Packers only gave up 23 points.  That includes a field goal directly attributable to a sack/fumble by Rodgers at the Green Bay 33-yard line.  The defense held the Vikings, and even pushed them back to the 38 yard line, but the Vikings made the subsequent 56-yard field goal.  The Packers allowed Cook and Mattison to gain 62 yards on 13 carries, a 4.8 yard average in the first half.  The pair finished with 126 yards on 28 carries, a 4.5 yard average for the game.  Worse, even after taking out the longest run for Cook and for Mattison, they each still would have averaged 4 yards per carry.  That is a healthy average and the gains were pretty consistent.  The Packers played 2.47 true defensive linemen per play, a fairly high number compared to last year.

Devondre Campbell had 11 tackles, including a tackle for loss.  Clark, Jarran Reed and Gary each added a tackle for loss.  Quay Walker looked as advertised.  He had 8 tackles (7 solo).  He showed that he can move.  The Vikings got him a few times in coverage, but that is not unexpected from a rookie.  We did see some times when Walker, Campbell and Barnes were on the field at the same time, and Campbell lined up as an outside linebacker at least once.  The injuries to Walker and Barnes are concerning, particularly Barnes, since he was carted off in an air cast, and was seen on crutches after the game.  Ray Wilborn is the only inside linebacker on the practice squad.

The Packers got some early pressure from Clark, and Gary had an early sack.  Preston Smith also had some consistent pressures.  The Packers had 8 quarterback hits, a very respectable number, but just one sack.  Clark, Lowry, Preston Smith and Rashan Gary each had 2 quarterback hits.  Moreover, despite the numbers Cousins seemed pretty comfortable in the pocket.  Being able to play pitch and catch with a far too often wide-open Justin Jefferson probably helped Cousins feel comfortable.  Jefferson did most of his damage against zone coverage.  It is interesting that Tipa Gileai received no defensive snaps.

Jefferson torched the Packers for 184 yards including 2 catches for 63 yards (41 and 23 yards, respectively) on the Vikings' opening touchdown drive.  Adam Thielen chipped in 36 yards on 3 receptions, but most of that came late in the secnd half against Stokes.  Thielen had just one catch in the first half for 7 yards.

The Packers played a tight rotation of defensive backs featuring mostly the starters.  A lot of the problems might be due to communitcation issues, especially the zone coverage breakdowns, which were far more prevalent than backs just getting beat by receivers.

WR: 2.66/play

RB: 1.11/play

If your favorite team plays far below your expectations on opening day against a team with a first year head coach, you’d better lower your expectations for the season. At least I won’t have to worry about booking my vacation during the playoffs this year haha 😂

WR snaps: Watkins and Cobb were almost invisible given how many snaps they played. AmRod didn't get a single offensive snap. All very disappointing. We'll see how the pecking order changes when Lazard comes back. It seemed like Watkins was running only short sideline routes...he can still run, and they need to utilize that. Watson changes the game if he catches that TD pass. He didn't. This start doesn't do much to sway the opinion that this WR group isn't good, even if Lazard was on the bench.

Lewis playing only 23 snaps is surprising. I would've expected him to play 30+ to help out the RT. LaF and Steno can't have expected to make it go in this one by playing 5-man protections most of the afternoon...makes me wonder if there's more to this. Tonyan seemed to be moving tentatively, but had a nice catch and run. I think he'll be fine. Not impressed otherwise with the TEs.

Packers ILB depth is getting tested immediately...I haven't seen anything on the seriousness of Walker's injury, but it looks like Barnes will miss a lot of time. He was likely a core ST'er, too. The Packers could really miss Walker against running QBs like Fields. It was pointed out a couple times that Walker wasn't getting good depth in his zone drops, too, which allowed Jefferson to run free behind him.

Was I the only one who felt that Douglas struggled as the slot CB? Maybe the Packers need to consider putting Jaire in there and letting Douglas and Stokes play outside when going nickel. It's early, though.

A hard game to watch in that the Packers had opportunity after opportunity (Watson's drop, two red-zone drives ending on downs) to drastically alter the game flow and couldn't do it. Should've tied the game on Watson's drop, and then after a series of punts, couldn't get Dillon in the endzone (running behind that weak RG-RT tandem?).

I'm not going to completely pan the defense on this one, but the inability of Joe Barry to figure out how to contain Justin Jefferson even with his full complement of DBs is troubling. A lot of that falls on the pass rush (note: if MN has finally figured out their OL problem, they're a playoff team). Jefferson eventually runs free and Cousins looks for him...but every one of those scoring drives for MN features at least one downfield play (20+ yd) to Jefferson. Every drive where he didn't catch a downfield pass ended on a punt and several with negative yardage over all. Adam Thielen has lost a step or two, and mostly they kept the run game in check.

JRJ being hurt is a problem because it keeps Hanson on the field. Tom was credible, but you have to ask just how much he was really tested. I'd hope that the Packers--if both Jenks and Bakh are out v. the Bears--would take a long hard look at inserting Tom at either RG or RT (that's assuming JRJ is OK next week) and sitting Hanson.

The Bears are a bad football team. The Packers should boat-race them next week.

In a poll I voted for Watkins to be the WR with the most receiving yards. Not looking too prescient on that one. Otherwise, I don't know what to say about the WRs. Probably could have mentioned Doubs a bit more.

Nice catch on Lewis only getting 23 snaps. Yet they played 1.23 TEs per play, roughly a normal number. *

I expect Barnes to go on IR. Either the Packers might elevate Wilborn a few times or go shopping for another ILB. If Walker's injury is minor, perhaps they think they can get by with 3 (Campbell, Walker and McDuffie). I have to note that I thought Wilborn stunk up the joint when he played.

I noticed that Douglas had 4 solo tackles and came up to limit gains on running plays, sometimes by making shoestring tackles. He did whiff once. I thought Jaire was solid, almost lock down. * Stokes looked better last year. I can't say that I noticed Douglas in coverage. Jefferson toasted Amos and Savage on one long reception, if I had the coverage and responsibilities right in my mind.

* I ran out of time to write the rant I had in mind about the coaching. I am losing some respect for Steno and Butkus, what with the decision to play Turner and kelly last year with Patrick at RG, and now their morbid fascination with Hanson. I also don't like Newman at RT. Got some stubborn coaches or they really don't think they have any other viable options.
* Edit: forgot the TE rant. MM didn't like helping his OTs out unless absolutely necessary. Yeah, I don't know what Deguara and Davis brought to the table, and Tonyan was not the new shiny toy I had hoped for. I would have expected far more snaps for Lewis, and a much bigger number than 1.23 TEs per play. End edit.

* Rant time was limited. Probably a lot of the zone coverage busts can be corrected with coaching and communication. I mean, cleaning that stuff up can be done prior to the regular season rather in week one. It is called preseason games and practices.

* Barry really isn't a believer in the Belicheck theory of taking away the opponent's best player. Make Thielen beat us, or Osborn (who finished with 3 recs for 14 yards). I suppose if Jefferson isn't threatening 200 yards, maybe those guys have bigger numbers. Still, if necessary, GB could have had Jaire follow Jefferson while keeping zone concepts elsewhere, or you, just playing man.

Thanks for reading.

I've read where Belichick likes to try and take away the top 3 tendencies a team likes to do, forcing them into running plays/players they're not as comfortable with executing.

Did you get a breakdown on where Lowry played his snaps? I thought I saw him lining up inside the guard once or twice, somewhere he shouldn't be. More 2i than NT I guess but still didn't like seeing it.

Thank you for these articles, they're appreciated.

Tom was not great but he was a lot more credible than Hanson. That farce has to end. The scary thought is that Rhyan, who was truly bad in preseason is the next man up. If we do not get Jenkins back and Runyon is out then we may need to go with one of Jones/Walker at RT, move Newman inside and play Tom at LG. Of course we won’t, we will roll out Hanson. Is Hanson this years’ equivalent of Drayton? This coaching staff seems to be divorced from reality. His pass protection grade is mind numbingly awful! And we are putting him out in front of a 40 year old MVP? I’m sorry but Butkus needs to be taken aside and set straight.

We start out trying the rookies, they make mistakes and then we largely shut them down. Yet still Doubs is the leading WR. That should scare us in many levels. We saw what has been obvious all preseason. Amari Rodgers is not a serious part of this O because he’s not an NFL caliber WR and his trick plays are better run by others. On that performance, Watkins has no deep threat capability and can’t get open. If that’s not true then what on earth were they doing with him? The idea that Cobb and Watkins can be our bread and butter catchers was looking delusional after a half.

The only way this team gets going in the passing game is to get Hanson out, get the run game going and use Doubs, Watson and Toure as the mainstays around Lazzard. Those three can separate. They have speed And quickness. They will drop some, they will run bad routes at times but we’ve just got to keep going. They will get more yards and scores than Cobb and Watkins based on yesterday.

Alternatively, LaFleur just called a truly dismal usage of Watkins and Cobb. Personally I think it’s a bit of both, but mostly the lesson needs to be ride the youth for 80% of the time and take your lumps. We should have kept feeding Watson deep (or at least running him there) and then had Doubs over the middle and other similarly unradical responses to a D playing like that.

Terrible game plan, terrible personnel usage, and it looks like the coach has no real grip on a strategy to handle this roster.

I was hoping they'd limit Cobb to 25-30 snaps a game so 37 isn't terrible with Lazard put. Absolutely no reason to throw it deep to him however, unless he's somehow completely uncovered. I'm sure it was a frustration throw but there are better players to make that throw to.

Virtually anyone at this point in his career. He’s not a high pointer and his long speed was never his calling card. However, the ball was overthrown too, making it particularly hard for a smaller receiver in that coverage. But that’s as much the personnel and play call as anything and sums up many of the reasons why the game was an offensive debacle. We either go young and embrace doing so and what that means or those “frustration” plays will be all too common with this roster. Lack of speed and agility kills.

I’m an optimist and normally don’t criticize coaches much because it easy to find fault. BUT, to me, Joe Barry has a lot to prove this year. He has the players, now he has to show he can be a great D-Coordinator. His yards and points given up are similar to Pettine’s last two years with arguably better players. His DVOA last year was 24, which was poor compared the the league.

I believe it was Douglas stated the Defense practiced to stop Jefferson and they did a terrible job at that. Yes, it was 23 points but the eye test showed the defense didn’t play well and I suspect the DVOA was poor. Keep in mind, Vikings played prevent D for much of the 4th quarter so if they had to they probably could’ve scored more.

Cousins had far too much time, Jefferson was wide open too many times and they had Preston Smith and Quay occasionally having to cover him man to man for major mismatches. He wins those 99% of the time. Barry was out coached in this game. I’m not experienced enough to know what might’ve worked, but that is what Barry should know. Maybe he should’ve made some adjustments or practiced some man to man coverage if Zone wasn’t working.

I hope this game has humbled the D-players, who have touted how great they are in pre-season and start showing they are one of the best like it sure looked liked on paper.

Murf, we rarely disagree, but I'm not following the line of thinking here.

Cousins had far too much time, and Jefferson was wide open too many times, and this is a good offensive team, so how did we manage to hold them to 23? Luck? I mean, the equation is not balancing for me.

When I look more closely, 3 of those points were a direct result of a turnover, so now we're looking at 20. 7 of those were on the opening drive. So for the rest of the game, the defense gave up one TD and two FGs.

On the other side of the ball, at the same time, Rodgers put 7 points on the board, and he's done better than that in every single game under LaFleur except for last year's opener, so this is the second worst offensive performance in the last 3 years. He took some hard hits. He lost a fumble on a hard sack.

I'm not worried about the defense, but we're going to have to do a better job on offense, because you will almost never win when you score only 7. Scoring more points, IMO, is going to have to start by protecting our QB better.

I watched the Chicago game, in its entirety, before the Packer game. Chicago has a very physical defense and they put some pretty hard hits on Trey Lance.....if they do that to Rodgers, the Love Era could be starting a lot sooner than people think.

Leatherhead…..My reasoning was because if the game was closer, I don’t think the Packers D would’ve stopped the Vikings offense for more points, if the Vikings needed to go for more. I just don’t think they played good D in this game. I’m confident they will get better because the players are just too good to continue to play this way.

You're presuming the Vikes called off the dogs early. I wouldn't buy that simply because the Vikes didn't go into a shell that early.

The Vikes had 5 scores, 3 FGs, 2 TDs. One was a long FG after ARod's fumble. The drives were...
10 plays, 78 yd, TD
3 plays, -5 yd, punt
5 plays, 20 yd, punt
8 plays, 89 yd, FG
7 plays, 74 yd, TD
3 plays, 1 yd, punt
--halftime--
4 plays, -5 yd, FG
5 plays, 20 yd, punt
12 plays, 74 yd, FG
7 plays, 34 yd, punt
Of the 10 possessions, 5 went for 20 yd or less, one for 34 (still ended in a punt). On those drives, Jefferson caught 2 passes for 5 yards. They had 4 real scoring drives, and guess what? Justin Jefferson ate on all of those. I don't disagree: Jefferson was carving up the Packers' defense, but it wasn't at will. This wasn't like the Saints game a year ago (remember: they only punted once except late when it was scrubs and 38-3) where the defense looked totally lost. In this case, they were lost, in zone, against Jefferson.

Admittedly, you can't change one play--meaning Watson's drop--and expect the remaining game to play out exactly the same. Everything changes after that, but a punch in the jaw like that would've likely made a big difference in how MN played the rest of the game, and the offense's mo.

One change: I bet we don't see the Packers playing nearly as much zone against the Vikes at the end of the season...at least, not by choice.

To me they just looked soft. If they want to be a dominant defense they'll have to be a lot more physical and play with more fire than that. They needed a momentum changing play it just had the look of game where that wasn't going to happen.

I doubt the Bears game will tell us much but week 3 should be a good preview of how the rest of the season will look for the defense. They have a hole to climb out of but after week three if they're a top 16 D the arrow should be pointing up, if not it might be same old same old and some changes might have to be made because the results won't be equal to the talent available.

I tend to agree, though I agree with Murf that Barry failed to come in with a viable strategy to contain Jefferson. That game screamed for a non zone approach, particularly in the early season (good zone D takes time to mesh). I really believe that this team believes it’s own hype (not just this year) and that that played a big part of this on both sides of the ball.

The problem here was offense. On this evidence Watkins is not an answer. Indeed he’s not good enough to be on the field. Cobb is at best a specialist situational player. Neither could get separation consistently. Both looked slow. LaFleur needs to put out the raw talent and go to it for the majority of snaps and lead with the run game. Let the RBs pound, let the young players get open and hope they learn fast and expect the mistakes and ride them.

Of course that’s a Frankenstein type marriage with Rodgers, but it’s the best hope we have. It’s also one of the reasons why this season always looked to be built in ignoring gaping contradictions. LaFleur had to step in and impose a solution to make this work. It looks like we are still in Adams ball mindsets with no Adams. It was not without irony that the game ended with a force into double coverage on a vet with one yard needed.

Unless this O addresses reality, this will be a painful season and, this far, it’s clear LaFleur hasn’t. Rodgers can’t carry this lot as rolled out yesterday this year. He may want to pretend he can, but if LaFleur lets him then expect a similar outcome and a year of increasing discord and frustration on O while the D gradually settles.

One of the writers tweeted that this is the 6th of LaFluer's 14 losses where they completely shat the bed. Besides the playoff game they usually respond with a much better effort. I'm not labeling them soft, they played soft in this game. Tampa will be a good test, if you saw the game last night they were physically beating up on Dallas.

Once again, we have a misfortune early and never seem to recover from it. The Watson drop, the Lewis fumble last year, the game in Tampa the year before......there might be some other examples.

Speaking of good tests, there is a certain group of football players in Chicago who put a real beating on the SF QB. Once in particular, they caught him from behind and slammed him face down with all their weight and the ball under him. I was amazed he kept playing. It was a real hard shot on his throwing arm.

If I'm coaching this team, Priority #1 is not letting Rodgers take all those shots. Whatever has to be done with personnel or scheme or play calling, we can't let him take all those shots.

Once that's resolved,we need to address the whole 17 rushes thing. Dillon/Jones should have more carries. Even if they're shorter carries , it keeps the offense on the field. Dillon/Jones had 15 carries for almost 100. I think we should have run it more. But of course, I almost always think you should run more and pass less.

I have props for Romeo Doubs. After his initial mistake, he recovered well and caught all 4 of his subsequent targets. That made him our leading WR in his first game as a pro. If our vet receivers don't assert themselves more, there's no reason to not have him on the field more.

Agreed. As I wrote in a comment above, I should have mentioned Doubs more in the article. Doubs also had a little reverse or end around (whatever) for 7 yards IIRC. Nice that Watson and Doubs can both run that play. Doubs got the 5th best grade from PFF, though just at 68.8, which is still good.

I got the right guy's picture up. Dillon and Jones were the cream once again.

One thing we always have agreed on, it all starts up front. PFF grades for the OL:

71: Nijman
55: Myers
43: Tom
44: Hanson
47: Runyan.
??: Newman Btw: 55 and 68.

Lowry (46) and Slaton (52.4) need to be better. Reed clocked in somewhere between 52.4 and 69.7 (IDK because I am not subscribed to PFF). Clark checked in at 70.1 and Gary at 69.9. Those are above average grades but not $17M AAV grades. I thought Preston Smith played well but I don't know his PFF grade.

You're right, that certainly didn't look like a top 5 defense. Even discounting Jefferson the yards per carry were pretty similar to last year's. They certainly didn't physically dominate a questionable OL after talking about it all TC. They did hold Cook to 0, 5 and 0 yards on his 1st carries but then the run defense fell apart after Jefferson burned them for a couple explosive plays. Not surprisingly the Vikings scored on every drive they had and explosive play(20+ yards) and didn't really do much otherwise.

Barry needs to find a way to get Alexander on a teams WR1 when the rest of the DBs are getting torched like that. PFF gave Amos and Savage player grades of 28 and 29 respectively. Those two might have brought into the hype and got curb stomped, we'll see how they respond.

Watkins & Cobb did not impress!

If the Packers want to become an offensive juggernaut they had better prepare both Watson & Doubs as quick as possible. Lazard back would help but Lazard is only a true #2 or #3 WR. It is pretty obvious to this fan if the offense is going anywhere this year these two rookie WR's need to be rapidly integrated to go along with Dillon and Jones. I have said it many times and still believe Doubs just may have the best WR stats by the end of the year.

Tonyan was tentative on the field and believe game 1 was to get him comfortable and to ensure he is able to withstand the rigors of an NFL game. Tonyan needs to be heavily utilized this year and if used right could challenge for most yardage & touchdowns on the team by TE's & WR's. The Packers need Tonyan and Rodgers needs to go to Tonyan more than any other year. He is talented with good hands and reliable.

Knock, we could use a good piece of analysis on our WR group in this game, but I haven't seen the all22 yet so I can't provide it.

If I recall correctly, after his epic fail on the first play, Rodgers didn't throw it to Watson again until late in the game, and that was a short one. Love came in and immediately drilled him for 25. Does anybody have a comment on that?

Or our last gasp 4th and 1 where the ball was forced to a double covered Tonyan in the endzone.....I'd like to know what people think about that.

Watkins had only a few targets, short. The other vet, Cobb, didn't have much of a day. Doubs, after apparently not running the correct route on the first series, caught his next four targets......all short.

Maybe this will be better with Lazard in the mix, but if this is all we're going to get from Cobb and Watkins, we should accelerate the integration of the youngsters.

And of course, you can't pass the football if you can't protect your QB, and we had trouble with that.

"...after his epic fail on the first play, Rodgers didn't throw it to Watson again until late in the game, and that was a short one. Love came in and immediately drilled him for 25. Does anybody have a comment on that?"

The game was over, Minn Defense was in, We won prevent, and it let Love play simple catch with Watson. Don't read to much into the Love snaps.

"Or our last gasp 4th and 1 where the ball was forced to a double covered Tonyan in the endzone.....I'd like to know what people think about that."

Rodgers has and likes to seal the loss. 3:50 on the clock, getting a 1st down would be smart and better to get a score and set the D up to get the ball back with time left. Stupid hero ball by Rodgers or MLF. Don't know who called it, but I lean Rodgers at the line.

The rest is basically been a known issue for the two elder receivers, and the OL lived up to what was expected without you know who's.

I know many think the D played better than it looked, but the Minn Offense was also a first time with a new HC and scheme. So, what one allows for one team, must be allowed for the other.

LH,
"If I recall correctly, after his epic fail on the first play, Rodgers didn't throw it to Watson again until late in the game, and that was a short one. Love came in and immediately drilled him for 25. Does anybody have a comment on that"?

I believe that to be true though I wonder if there might have been a short pass off to the left? Was that during game, or was that late in the game?

"Or our last gasp 4th and 1 where the ball was forced to a double covered Tonyan in the endzone.....I'd like to know what people think about that".

I'd say Rodgers should have either found Tonyan sooner, or gone elsewhere as he was double/triple teamed with no chance.

"Watkins had only a few targets, short. The other vet, Cobb, didn't have much of a day. Doubs, after apparently not running the correct route on the first series, caught his next four targets......all short".

I'm rather convinced Doubs will lead the team unless Rodgers simply elects to throw mainly to Lazard. If even close to the same pass attempts I think Doubs comes up on top. Guy is a talent and the Packers/Rodgers need to accelerate his development rather than hold him back because of an occasional mishap.

"Maybe this will be better with Lazard in the mix, but if this is all we're going to get from Cobb and Watkins, we should accelerate the integration of the youngsters".

Personally, I have never been excited about either Watkins or Cobb for 2022 and think both are going to disappoint. I truly believe it is time to start incorporating Doubs & Watson & even some Toure. For those non-Amari fans I also think Amari needs to be integrated. Where was some of the razzle dazzle play calling on Sunday that MLF had been doing for Amari this summer?

AR threw to Watson on 2nd and 10 with 3:57 left in the game for 9 yards, and on the very next play threw incomplete to Watson. Then Love threw to him. With the drop, that is 4 targets altogether.

I think that qualifies as not throwing to Watson again until late in the game.

Summarizing ML after the game: The Vikings has a great game plan...we weren't prepared. "Any time Aaron Jones comes out of a game with only 6 touches, there is something wrong."

What? Maybe Matt should have a closed door sit down with the PLAY CALLER. Run plays called just 32% when it is the strength of the O now? Geez. Maybe run to set up the passing game for a change.

The Head Coach seemed a bit shellshocked talking with Larry after the game...kind of like "what just happened?" I am concerned about Matt's game management when his weekly game plan breaks down on O. Doesn't adjust well.

On D, Barry didn't adjust at all. Just watched Cousins and Jefferson play catch and shred the silly soft zone play after play.

Six touches. He and Dillon had 15 carries, combined, for almost 100 yards. IMO, that number should have been double. We lost time of possession, which we almost never do. We couldn't stay on the field and burn clock.

39 passes,17 rushes. 4 sacks that would have been passes, so it's really more like 43 called passes and 17 runs. That's like a 70/30 ratio. On the road. On a day where you couldn't protect your QB.

I was just thinking about Jersey Al's Three Plays That Make You Go Hmmm article. It should be a doozy. I can't wait to see which 3 he picks out. I know there were a lot of plays that made me go Hmmm, along with other various noises/words which I cannot repeat here.

Obviously, the dropped TD to open the game.
The failure on 4th and goal.

Those two right there are 14 points. I'd probably include the sack/fumble by Rodgers because it led directly to another 3 points, but more importantly, when Rodgers got up, he looked kind of shaky. That should have been a very sobering reminder for everybody.

Hanson had no business being out there and only added a great deal more proof of that fact. Watkins looked like a has been. Cobb too largely. Reality is a cruel mistress. Keep sending Watson deep. Let him beat and drop, because if he catches one it’s likely a TD or field goal. Try that with Doubs too. I’d have used Toure over the middle to outrun those ILBs. Cobb and Watkins could barely separate.

Kind of bleak from your perspective.

I see things from the nuts and bolts perspective. Why is Hanson out there? What the professionals who have been working 100 hour weeks think is pretty obvious. The question is "why would I think I'd have a better understanding of this than them"?

And my limited understanding realizes that RG is going to be the weak link in a line. LT, C, RT, LG, RG. Ron Wolf knew that 30 years ago. But if Runyan can't go, then it's going to be Hansen at RG again, with Tom at LG and Newman at RT. Or is there a better plan?

As regards Watson, Watkins, Cobb, Doubs, Toure, etc., it isn't going to matter who is running routes if we can't protect our QB better. My personal opinion is that doing a better job of protecting our QB is the first item on this morning's agenda. We could run more double TE sets, but we really should be handing off more, under the circumstances.

I have some hubris. 💪 I imagine the coaches think Zach Tom sucks even worse than Hanson and that Rhyan is unplayable at present. Or, they are thinking long term and believe it is best to toss Hanson in there and let him take his lumps because he will get better.

Now, to be honest and clear, I didn't see whatever PFF saw that led to such a low grade for Tom. I was trying to watch Hanson and Newman, so all I can say about Tom is that the low grade surprised me. The low grade given to Runyan did not surprise me.

I'm totally fine with Watson just being MVS with some added gadget plays. If he misses four or five deep balls in a row then they'll have to look to someone different but if he can catch a couple early this year it will change the way the safeties are playing and give him some easy yards on quick hitters.

Winfree= Why 9 ? I get that Lazard was hurt. But we have 7 WRs on this Roster. More than last year.
Amari Rodgers is suppose to be Cobbs replacement. Toure beat out Winfree. Yet we're seeing nothing from either.
Watkins- Why 41? Does he know how to get open? Or does he get more time than a rookie. " To learn the playbook?"
Hanson is No guard. And Newman isn't good enough to play RT. 61 = Just unbelievable.

SH,
The longer MLF/Rodgers holds back the development of Doubs, Toure, & Watson the longer it is going to take this offense to become credible. I just don't see Cobb & Watkins (they will have their moments) are going to be even close to game changers. The acceleration of Doubs & Toure, & Watson is imperative. Rodgers will just need to deal with the occasional mistake in the short-term knowing if he excersizes patience the team/WR's will be better off for it.

The possibility of losing Watkins, Cobb, Lazard, and Tonyan next year, is what Rodger's is fighting.
They can't pay everyone 10 mil. But this is on the coach too.

Still not understanding the coaching staffs infactuation with Jake Hanson. He was beat like a drum. I am not an O-line coach, but my untrained eye tells me Zack Tom is a better player than Jake Hanson.....

It’s a very long time since I have seen a rostered player look consistently overmatched in all phases of a position as has as Hanson has done all through preseason and now only more so (unsurprisingly) when it matters. Butkus has no where to hide and this experiment needs to be stopped or Stenavich won’t either. My concern is that LaFleur has a history of playing 3 monkeys over obvious black holes, most recently Drayton.

Our coaches risk their livelihoods on infatuations?

I've liked Tom since draft day. I thought he played pretty well yesterday. Hanson looked like our weakest offensive line spot. As long as Runyan and Jenkins are out, it's kind of moot because we need Hanson and Tom both right now. Eventually, I think Jenkins will be our RT, Runyan will be our LG, and Hanson and Tom can both sit down.

Deguara:

Played 15 snaps. Got the highest PFF grade (79.9). PFF notes 11 routes run, 2 receptions for 28 yards. On the four other snaps, he got a "solid run-blocking grade."

My translation:

9 routes run, zero yards, zero receptions, zero targets when it mattered plus 2 routes, 2 catches for 28 yards in garbage time when MN was playing prevent on the last drive. I give credit to Deguara for some move run blocking prowess, good hands, and showing some fight when Kendricks kept laying on him as a delaying tactic to let the clock run out in the last minute of the game.
