Packers Snap Counts V. The Giants: Week 14

Love misses more lay-ups than the Giants quarterback while the team makes more mistakes than NYG to boot.

The Packers elevated RB Kenyan Drake from the practice squad and claimed CB David Long on waivers, meaning he will be on the 53-man roster mostly likely for at least the next three weeks.  Drake and Long did not play against the Giants.  Also active but not playing were Sean Clifford and OLB Brenton Cox.  The inactive players were Quay Walker, Christian Watson, Jaire Alexander, and Aaron Jones due to injury, along with healthy scratches in Caleb Jones and Klu Kelly.

Player Snaps % STs
Myers 68 100 5-19%
Tom 68 100 5-19%
Jenkins 68 100
Runyan 56 82 5-19%
Walker 51 75 5-19%
Nijman 17 25 7-26%
Rhyan 12 18
Newman     5-19%

The Packers gained 123 yards on 25 carries for a 4.92-yard per carry average.  The running backs gained 83 yards on 19 carries for a 4.37-yard average.  The run blocking was reasonably good.  The offensive line allowed 8 quarterback hits and 2 sacks.  Those numbers are not atypical for a team to allow.  The problem was that the Giants defensive line got a very good and consistent push up the middle all game.  NT Dexter Lawrence worked over all of the interior offensive linemen, particularly Runyan and Myers, who often were on skates.  Love was not able to step up in the pocket or find creases through which to run.  Also, DE/OLB Azeez Ojulari entered the game with 199 snaps, 1 quarterback hit and no tackles for loss but he was able to add 3 QB hits and 1 TFL to those statistics working mostly against Walker and Nijman.  It is tough to be sure just watching it live on television but I got the impression that the Packers did not run very many long-developing pass routes in this game.  They certainly ran a number of long-developing gadget plays, though.

Player Snaps % STs
Dillon 36 53
Taylor 32 47 13-48%
Drake Did Not Play

Dillon gained 53 yards on 15 carries (3.5-yard average) with a long of 8.  He caught 2 of 3 targets for 25 yards with a long of 35.  Dillon lost 10 yards on a screen that was doomed from the start when Dillon ran into a pulling teammate, fell to the ground but was able to catch Love's pass only to be squashed for a big loss.  Taylor gained 30 yards on 4 carries for a 7.5-yard average with a long of 14.  Taylor still needs to learn when to go out of bounds.  He also caught 2 passes for 22 yards with a long of 16.  Dillon ran 14 routes and Taylor ran 20 pass routes.

It almost seems like LaFleur is conceding that Dillon cannot do any significant damage when running wide.  If he wants to challenge the defense horizontally, he uses Reed or (when healthy) Watson to get to and turn the corner.  Heck, earlier in the year he used Musgrave.  Still, Dillon showed a nice move on his catch with some yards after the catch on his long pass reception.  The Packers chose to elevate Kenyan Drake, who they only signed on Tuesday, rather than FB Henry Pearson, who I thought missed some blocks last week.  It may be that the team is conserving his elevations, but if Drake has anything left in the tank, Pearson (and perhaps Taylor) could be in jeopardy.

Player Snaps % STs
Kraft 68 100 12-44%
Sims 10 15 4-15%
Deguara 7 10 10-37%

Tucker Kraft caught all 4 of his targets for 64 yards (16-yard average) with a long of 43.  He has come along nicely since Musgrave had to go on injured reserve.  The outlook for the tight end position looks bright.  Kraft ran 40 routes, per PFF.  Sims and Deguara had no statistics.  Sims ran 5 routes and Deguara 2.  The Packers have taken to using a tight end to pass block a defensive end or OLB, sometimes two TEs, and sometimes after the TE gets beat they have a running back waiting to pick up the rusher.  They have even pulled Myers to pick up the rusher.  I did not see that against the Giants, but will look for it when I watch the game for a second time.

Player Snaps % STs
Doubs 56 82
Reed 47 69 5-19%
Wicks 43 63
Heath 23 34 10-37%
Toure 18 26

Reed caught 8 or 10 targets for just 27 yards, a 3.4 yards per catch average, with a long of 8.  That isn't going to cut it as a receiver but Reed added 38 rushing yards on 4 carries, including a touchdown run.  Reed ran 28 pass routes (0.96 yards/route run) and got 4 carries.  Doubs caught 4 of 7 targets for 32 yards, an 8-yard average, with a long of 14.  I sometimes wonder if Doubs can catch a pass without double-clutching it.  Doubs ran 40 routes for just a 0.80 yards per route run average.  That is not going to cut it, either.  Toure caught 2 of 4 targets for 22 yards with a long of 16 on 11 routes.  He had a chance to catch a touchdown pass but could not get his feet down.  Wicks caught 2 of 6 targets for 20 yards with a long of 19.  Wicks ran 26 routes for a miserable 0.77-yards per route run.  Heath caught 1 of 2 targets for 6 yards and a touchdown.  Heath ran 11 routes, gaining 0.55 yards per route run.

There was not much going on downfield.  To be fair, Love was not accurate in this game.  Pro Football Focus noted that the Giants play a lot of man coverage, and suggested that the Green Bay receivers who played are better against zone coverage schemes.  Wicks has been very good against both zone and man per multiple sites, including playerprofiler.  So has Heath and Reed.  Playerprofiler suggests that Doubs struggles against man coverage.  Wicks left the game with a knee injury and did not return.

Player Snaps % STs
Love 68 100
Clifford DNP

Love completed 25 of 39 (64.1%) for 218 yards (5.59-yards per attempt) with 1 TD and 1 interception.  He finished with a passer rating of 76.7.  He scrambled twice for 2 yards.  He missed some wide open receivers and made some of the passes that he completed more difficult than they should have been.  Besides missing some of the lay-ups, he under threw and was a little late with a pass or two, notably a pass in the end zone to Toure, who clearly had beaten the cornerback.  He completely missed some easy third-down passes early in the game.  Love had "happy feet" a bit due to a consistent rush.

The Giants gained 209 yards on 34 carries for a 6.1-yard average.  That is terrible, but again, this is a Jekyll and Hyde situation.  The Packers held Barkley to 18 yards on 9 carries in the first half only to see him gain 66 yards on 11 carries in the second half with a long of 34.  And since Barkley was kind enough to fumble without contact on his long run, with Valentine recovering it and returning it for 50 yards, so that gash did not hurt.  I was comfortable that the Packers could stop the Giants in short-yardage situations, which they did several times.  The Packers played 2.52 true defensive linemen per play, a somewhat higher than normal number.  The problem was rushing yards by the quarterback, Tommy Devito, and by wide receiver Wandale Robinson, who combined gained 107 on 12 rushes, including some gash plays.

Wyatt had 4 solo tackles including a tackle for loss.  Clark had 3 solo tackles, 2 of which were for loss.  Wooden had 2 solo tackles in limited snaps (7) while Slaton and Brooks each had 2 tackles (1 solo).  No defensive lineman had a quarterback hit.  Devito led the NFL in sacks per pressure because he lacks pocket awareness, but against the Packers he wormed his way through line, often enough up the middle rather than by rolling out, to pick up 71 rushing yards on 10 carries with a long of 26.  The tackle numbers are smaller than normal because the Giants only ran 56 plays, including 34 rushing attempts.

Campbell had 6 tackles (4 solo).  He crashed a gap on first and goal from the one but just plain missed Barkley, who broke some arm tackles and scored a touchdown on the play.  McDuffie had 7 tackles (5 solo) including a tackle for loss.  Wilson had 1 solo tackle on a run off right end; Preston Smith held the edge beautifully and Wilson cleaned up.  Gary had 2 tackles (1 solo) and 2 quarterback hits, the only ones the Packers were credited with.  Gary has to not always run the arc: when he gets even with the quarterback he needs to bull rush towards the QB, hopefully pushing the QB into the OLB on the opposite side or making him step up into the jaws of the defensive linemen.  Van Ness had 2 tackles (1 solo) and Enagbare had 1 solo tackle.  Preston Smith had 1 assisted tackle.  When playing a team with one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL, the Packers need more out of the OLBs and defensive linemen.

Savage had 7 tackles (6 solo).  Valentine had 4 solo tackles and Nixon added 4 tackles (3 solo).  Valentine had the 50-yard return on Barkley's unforced fumble and a pass interference penalty.  Owens had 2 solo tackles and Ford and Ballentine each had 1 solo tackle.  Only Wandale Robinson hurt the Packers with 79 receiving yards on 7 targets.  Nixon did not have a good night in pass defense or on special teams.  No other Giant had more than 22 receiving yards.  The Packers had no pass breakups, partly because they played so far away from the receivers that they could have been pen pals.  Aside from throwing 2 un-catchable passes on third down during the Giants first two possessions, Devito completed 17 of 19 passes.  I do not think Devito had a big-time throw.  He had a couple of nice passes.  After the first two possessions, Devito did not miss any lay-ups.  That was one of the differences in the game.  Rudy Ford played a lot of snaps on special teams but just 3 snaps on defense.  I cannot say that I think Owens or Savage is better.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Whelan had a bad game despite averaging 39.7 yards net and gross.  His first punt went just 36 yards where it was fair caught at the 21-yard line.  His second punt went 49 yards with the roll, but it was so short that Rudy Ford leveled the opposing punt returner as he ran forward madly to try to field it.  The net with the penalty was 20 yards.  Whelan's third punt went just 36 yards, but it was muffed and Rudy Ford alertly fell on it at the NY 14-yard line.  The Packers gained 0 yards and kicked a field goal, which came dangerously close to one of the uprights.  So did another of Carlson's attempts.  Carlson missed a 45-yarder and made a 48-yard right down the middle.  Nixon muffed a punt leading to a points on a turnover.

i just do not get how a guy who has been throwing a football two thirds of his life can miss so many routine throws. but still the answer was not running Reed on ends around half a dozen times. Perhaps it working the first time was the biggest mistake of the game for MLF kept hoping to have it happen again. But we made DeVito look like Lamar Jackson. There is so much to be angry about: go to Ashwaubenon high school and get a soccer player to be the kicker, like the kid in Dallas who could make them from 70 yards out.

Maybe you didn’t watch Brett Favre throw the football at times, especially at the beginning of games. It wasn’t Love’s best showing by any means, although I thought he settled down better after the first series. He will have better days. Some of it might be pass catchers off on routes that makes the QB look bad.

As I feared, the Packers lose to an equally not-so-good team and quarterback.

Love was not good. Packer team was not good.

As I said the other day, I'm still not sold on Love.

And I'm still not sold on Matt LaFleur. . .

Packer team still seems disorganized, still a group of somewhat talented individuals going in different directions. Head coach and defensive coordinator still do not seem to understand what they have offensively and defensively when it comes to their players- how to best use them, for example, in different situations. You get the impression that nobody competent is in charge.

The lack of pass rush was astounding. I'm pretty sure I read that the Giants were down to a third-string player at right tackle. Whoever it was, he stonewalled Rashan Gary all night. And none of the other rushers did any better. When they did get a push, they overran the QB and allowed him to gain big yardage on scrambles. The Packers in general were not prepared for the QB's willingness to run, and to run well. That's what lost them the game more than any other one thing, but oh boy, there were lots of things.

The rush was there, particularly early, but it was undone by no one in place to catch DiVito when he wriggled free. The response was to go from all out pressure to essentially none. Just terrible coaching. Now a great performance might have overcome that, but you call to set up those not in the hope of one.

Is it the coach's fault when none of our guys can win their matchups? Maybe there could've been a better response, but it's hard to win when you are getting beaten at the line of scrimmage. The run defense was actually good for most of the game. I suspect the coaches were confident that our pass rushers could get home against an O-line that had been struggling in pass protection. On a better day, they probably could have. But this was not their day.

Greg, DeVito was pressured almost constantly. It's called stepping up in the pocket, which he did well. He also completed passes on plays like that.

Coaches needed to adjust, somehow, and didn't. Using a spy seems like the obvious solution to me.

Thanks, TGR.

The O-line got embarrassed again. Wink remembered to mess around with the guards and center and could do what he wanted without penalty. That continuous push up the middle is why I believe Love struggled in this and other losses. Why other DCs in the wins didn't concentrate or focus their attacks there is wondersome. I know Tampa will remember on Sunday.

I see some people bitching about the D, but I think they did ok considering the turnovers. The muff that they scored a TD on and their muff that they held us to a field goal was the difference in the game. Would I have liked to see a stop on their last drive? Sure. It shouldn't have come to that though.

A double reverse 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage on a two-point conversion???? Come on Matt! You should have run the flee flicker! That's how you impose your dominant will on their D.

Wonder if anyone else thinks you can win in the NFL by just running cute plays and letting the other team push you around like sheep?

Steve,

the interesting thing here is that in wins, our interior O line has held up against some of the league's best D linemen and it's not because the opponent wasn't trying. How to explain these swings? I have no idea.

While you account for a 4 point differential on muffed punts, there were also other scoring opportunities GB failed to capitalize on. A little cleaner and it could have been over 30 points. Add stupid penalties on top of that.

It’s particularly dark humor because we no longer have a single DB who excels, nay is even decent, at such coverage. It plays against both physical type and ability. Scheme over players on top of tactically dubious plan to start off with. That’s why Barry is Barry.

I have to disagree with your comment on the run blocking. It was terrible with maybe a couple of exceptions all night. In part that was because the line was so often going backwards against a DL that has struggled all year. Tom was again the least problem, but he was being shunted back into the lanes too often. Jenkins looked to struggle too. Myers was going backwards all night. I think it’s past the point of trying to deny that’s a major problem for the guards, however bad they might be otherwise.

It looked to me as if Nijman held up a little better than Walker, but since we’d stopped running the RBs by that point neither he nor Rhyan’ potential to improve that area was relevant.

A horribly prepared team, an overly “clever” game plan, horrendous defensive game plan and an impotent OL capped by a lack of adjustments. Sure, players weren’t playing well, but they were not set up to. Echoes of last year against that team at every position. A hallmark LaFleur and staff performance coupled with the unaddressed weaknesses on OL and D that have lain untouched all year really.

That is a LaFleur team all over. When it works, great. if it doesn’t, we just keep on trying the same things. It’s no different than versus the 49ers when he was a new HC. That’s why we won’t win seasons with LaFleur as a caller or with the coaches he assembles. Games yes, seasons no.

I thought his blaming of the players (“execution”) was particularly galling. For me the execution most at issue was on the part of the coaching before and during. The D in the final drive was a fitting capstone for the night the coaching staff had, for that result and because it’s one we have seen all too often before.

I suppose I may have been a little charitable in my assessment of the run blocking. IDK. Dillon averaged 3.5 yards/carry and only had a long of 8. Most of his runs were positive with few outright stuffs. I never got the impression that the Pack couldn't pick up a couple of yards with a running play at any point in the game. There have been games earlier this year in which I didn't think they could gain a yard if that's what was needed. It was probably good enough to win a game with.

Agreed on Runyan and Myers. I have also noted that Jenkins hasn't really been very good since that MCL injury, and that means for quite a few games now. Pressure up the middle was there in pass pro causing Love issues - happy feet. He stood in there but the hopping has to go.

TGR- "Dillon averaged 3.5 yards/carry and only had a long of 8. Most of his runs were positive with few outright stuffs".
It didn't help that for some reason MLF decided that he should go back to running AJD outside the tackles and from shotgun again. He's much too young to be afflicted by dementia, yet there it is.

#28 was used incorrectly. How many times was he required to cut in our backfield? It nearly brings him to a stop. How many times was he thrown to? He's been catching everything thrown to him, had some great YAC, but still under utilized. He and Kraft could both be targeted more but no, gotta try Reed on some more end arounds..

Dexter Lawrence is a different beast. At times I thought Jenkins and Myers did a good job holding him at bay. He played more on the other side in 2nd half from what I saw, at times head up on Runyan.

One of the more baffling sequences for me was when Dillon picked up 5 yards to make it 2nd and 5 from the Giants 9 yard line. Lawrence wasn't on the field so I thought for sure it would be a run. Pass, Love was sacked, and they had to settle for a FG to make it 13-14. Against a team with a rushing defense almost as bad as the Packers I would have liked to see more running plays, especially since the QB was having an off night.

LL, that would have required an in-game adjustment. Taking advantage of their best defensive player not being on the field while we're in position to score simply wasn't in the game plan, you can't ask MLF to do something like that. What would happen to the continuity?!?

It seemed a lot of the players were a step slow last night. Love was off and it looked like LaFleur knew it based on how he called the game. I would have liked to have seen more of Patrick Taylor, he's looked pretty good with the ball in his hands lately and his running style is a nice change up from Dillon's. Defensively, they left the middle of the field open for Devito to run and never adjusted to that. the Giants took what our defense gave them all night, and they were given plenty, especially on the last drive. Nixon was the hero last week, not so much this week.

I gather Wicks left with an ankle injury which he later said was %%ef up. A high ankle sprain. And Reed apparently is in concussion protocol per Wes Hodkiewicz. That's bad, especially with Watson uncertain.

Savage, Wyatt, Nixon, all left the game but were able to return. We have to hope all of those 3 will not miss time.

The Buccaneers have a good run defense but Vita Vea missed Sunday's game against the Falcons with a toe injury. He's no Dexter Lawrence but can make a mess of inside runs if he plays.

Either way the OL has their work cut out for them this week. They play with a multiple front and the Packers O linemen haven't been the most assignment sure group in the league.
