Packers Sloppy In Preseason Opener Loss vs Jets

Packers struggle to execute in disheartening preseason loss against the Jets.

Fundamental miscues plagued the Green Bay Packers in their preseason opening loss Saturday night to the New York Jets, 30-10. A handful of drops, seven penalties, and two lost fumbles highlighted the blooper reel. The usual preseason caveats did little to tame scores of angry fans online, or coach Matt LaFleur’s frustration with the performance.

“Bottom line, you don’t want to put bad football out there,” LaFleur said via packers.com. “Whether it’s preseason or not, it’s a little disappointing I would say. You have to have the urgency to fix it, and it’s got to get fixed fast because the regular season is going to be here in no time.”

The Packer starters left much to be desired after seeing live action for the first time in eight months. The first-team offense picked up where it left off last year with drops and inconsistent play. Green Bay followed up a quick 3-and-out with a drive that stalled at midfield when quarterback Jordan Love took a sack. Newly extended tackle Zach Tom was beat on the play.

The defensive starters matched the offense’s execution. In their one series, the starting defense allowed the Jets to march 79 yards in 10 plays capped by a 13-yard Justin Fields touchdown scramble for the game’s first score. The former Chicago Bears quarterback stepped through the pass rush and outraced Kesian Nixon to the edge and across the goal line. The Jets – playing their starting offense – found plenty of success through the middle of the field on the drive, with both the run and pass.

Rookie Matthew Golden executed the two best plays for Packer offensive starters. First on a third and seven, he quickly beat the cornerback inside at the line of scrimmage and made a strong hands catch in traffic for the conversion. On the following third down, Golden beat all-pro cornerback Sauce Gardner on the route and drew defensive pass interference to convert.

The second-team defense provided Lambeau Field with the biggest jolt of the first half. Early in the second quarter on a fourth and one from his own 25, camp darling Nazir Stackhouse bottled up the line of scrimmage on the Braelon Allen rush attempt. Linebacker Kristian Welch scraped over for the tackle and turnover on downs.

The second-team offense answered with a seven-play, 46-yard drive that ended in a Brandon McManus field goal, 7-3. The Jets committed two personal fouls on the drive for 30 penalty yards, both on late hits out of bounds. The preseason follies leveled up later in the second quarter.

On a third and seven from his own seven, backup quarterback Malik Willis took a sack and fumble just inside the goal line which the Jets recovered for a touchdown, 14-3. Sean Rhyan – serving as the backup center – was beat on the play.

Then, with 3:04 remaining in the half, return specialist Mecole Hardman attempted to field a punt on the bounce. The ball skipped to his side and Hardman was unable to pin it to his hip as the Jets’ punt team swarmed, forcing another fumble and recovering it at the Green Bay nine. The second-team defense stood tall again and held New York to a field goal as the Packers entered halftime down 17-3.

The third quarter proved to be a continuation of the first half. The Jets scored a touchdown on tight end screen to Stone Smart from the 24-yard line for a 24-3 lead. Smart had a convoy escort him to the endzone as the Packer defense failed to react to the pulling linemen. The Jets added a field goal early in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 27-3.

The Packers third-quarter offense, now led by third-string quarterback Sean Clifford, was inept as it failed to pick up one first down in two series. The team’s first first down in the second half occurred at the 13:09 mark in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard Amar Johnson run. Two plays later, Johnson delivered the biggest Packer highlight of the night.

The undrafted South Dakota State running back bolted through the right side before breaking a tackle and scampering 39 yards for a touchdown to make it 27-10. After bouncing off the safety, Johnson outran another defensive back to the pylon. Second round rookie lineman Anthony Belton pancaked a linebacker to start the run. Johnson finished with seven carries for 67 yards and the touchdown.

The Jets added a field goal on a 14-play drive that took almost nine minutes off the clock to make it 30-10 with 2:54 remaining. Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma saw his only action on the ensuing series. He led the offense into field goal range and converted a fourth-and-five on the game’s last play.

Second year offensive lineman Jordan Morgan delivered one of the most encouraging overall performances. The former first round pick out of Arizona started at left tackle for an injured Rasheed Walker, and didn’t allow a pressure or commit a penalty in one half of play. The broadcast didn’t mention his name, which is a compliment to a lineman’s play more often than not.

Unfortunately the same can’t be said for fellow second year lineman Jacob Monk. Monk committed three holding penalties, and allowed a sack in approximately three quarters of play.

Other Game Notes

  • Chris Brooks handled the starting running back duties. Josh Jacobs was not listed on the injury report but did not play. Israel Abanikanda shared the backup duties with Johnson.
  • Jordan Love had two series with the starters and went a mere 1-for-5 for seven yards.
  • Barryn Sorrell had two pressures in one series during the second quarter. One of the pressures nearly forced an interception. The fourth-round rookie from Texas had strong game overall.
  • Zayne Anderson injured his knee in the first quarter and jogged off. Running back Jalen White had a foot injury.
  • The Packers will travel to Indianapolis this week in preparation for their second preseason game at the Colts. The teams will have a joint practice Thursday before their noon game Saturday.

Certainly many more negatives than positives in this game. I know that the first team Offense had more drops than catches. However it is possible for Love to throw other passes - than just slants. I would really like to see his performance level match his salary. Even if it's just for one drive during the pre-season.

Would love to see how all those here who extolled keeping Malik Heath feel now?

Good dude, but not dynamic or a value add on the field.

Though Mecole Hardman may have played himself off the roster too, pending a big turnaround.

Will Shepherd likely earned a spot on the PS.

The Packers heavily auditionned Abanikanda - who showed that he has straight-line burst but little wiggle and vision. Johnson showed much better - especially his TD run.

Every ball he threw tonight was just fire it and see what happens

He isn’t ready to play today.

The new Ed Policy sees this and ML. Will be looking for a new job soon.

Plus he comes up and reads the defense but I don’t think he is.

Just come up run the play and a passing down and should have someone open

He looks to one maybe two receivers.

Last year guys wide open a lot and he doesn’t see them.

Why throw slants in pre season. Players get hurt.

When you throw the ball it should be shifting right before the wideouts catch the ball vs a bullet so the are catching the tip of the ball.

Can someone show him how to throw a ball so it slightly rotates and you are catching the front side of the ball.

It’s preseason. It’s early, but that was pathetic effort and focus. Looking squarely at you LaFleur.

Coming into his 7th year as H.C. Perhaps he's peaked. Nothing new to offer or inspire others with.

Put the entire coaching staff and the GM in the picture too. The Brewers are a perfect example.of what a savvy GM and a good coaching staff can accomplish even without any real superstars. Stress sound fundamentals and bring some excitement and the players respond. It becomes infectious and the success builds. Overall, the Pack seems uninspired. They're picking up right where they left off last year. And that's just not good enough.

But he's a "Top Five" coach, right? Looking squarely at you, Cory.

Wow, that was all kinds of awful. The #1 units were especially bad. Some takeaways:

Matthew Golden came to play. He had a nice catch for a 3rd down conversion and got another first down by drawing a pass interference call on a really good CB, Sauce Gardner.

Romeo Doubs had a bad drop and looked awful overall.

Jordan Love was 1 for 5, but the only bad throw was the one to Musgrave, who was open deep. Love sailed it, and he's lucky Musgrave didn't get injured trying to make the catch.

The Jets got a lot of yards up the middle, and yet the DTs who are competing for roster spots--Colby Wooden, Warren Brinson, and Nazir Stackhouse--all had some good moments. Especially Wooden. This will be an ongoing battle for roster spots and playing time.

Mecole Hardman vs. Malik Heath was the most interesting roster battle coming into the game, and they were both terrible. I thought they could put Hardman at punt returner and not worry about it, but he was completely inept on that muffed punt. He looked like he had never fielded a punt before. He also had a bad drop. Heath also had a bad drop and at least one contested catch that he failed to make.

I was hoping with the Anthony Belton pick the Packers would be at least seven deep on the O-line. Belton was not terrible in this game, but he's probably not yet good enough to be that #7 guy. And we've got nobody at #8. Neither Jacob Monk or Donovan Jennings inspires any confidence.

I was not impressed with Isaiah Simmons, who seems to have gotten quiet in practice since the pads came on. I want to see more of Ty'Ron Hopper.

Bo Melton missed a tackle but otherwise seemed okay.

The best player was RB Amar Johnson, who has almost no chance of making the team.

It is time for the coaching staff to really earn their paychecks. This is not a flush it away performance. It was an eerily similar performance to what we saw in most of our losses last year.

1. Not ready to play from the opening kickoff. This trend has gone on far too long. Slow starts doom you against good teams and Gute needs to light a fire under LeFleur.
2. Defense can't get off the field on 3rd downs. What will it take to cover the short over the middle routes? It is maddening. We somehow make poor QB's look good. The difference was stark against the Jet's, who played aggressively and challenged receivers for the ball over and over again. Let's risk a couple of interference calls OK?
4. Receivers dropping the ball has to change. A statement needs to be made. Doubs seems more concerned with getting hit than catching the ball. Heath and Hardman have shown who they are. Tough decisions need to be made.
5. Love needs to be better. QB's of his stature need to shine in these preseason vanillafests. Let's see some fire QB1!
6. Penalties, penalties, penalties. Sound familiar?

Need to seriously start addressing these issues and the coaching staff needs to take responsibility. Lets get serious about improving and having a better season.

"Gute needs to light a fire under LeFleur."

Except the GM of Player Personnel has zero authority and power and oversight to do so. Ed Policy has to bring the matches...for now.

By watching I think Doubs has to go. He has become afraid to be hit it seems after the two concussions, he has become gun shy, not that I blame him under the circumstances. His best bet is retire it looked like.

Meyers wanted to be paid mo money and we know those guys mostly end up with great careers on other teams and we start developing the replacement.

I hope the players are running wind sprints the next few practices.

I was so looking forward to this game. Too bad it was not much of a game. BORING!

I would say many of the coaches need to go with Bisaccia leading the way, followed by La Fleur, Stenavich, Butkus, Mahaffey, Getsy, Hackett. These guys are fine with the status quo and none of them move the needle.

Iola's own Christian Welch had a nice game with a 4th down stop and some nice special teams tackles. Really pulling for him to make the team.
