Packers signing DT Jarran Reed

The former Seahawks draft pick will join Green Bay on a one year deal.

From NFL Network:

The Seattle Seahawks selected Reed in the second round of the 2016 draft (funnily enough, immediately after the Packers had traded up to select Jason Spriggs)

He'll sign a one year deal in Green Bay.

Back in 2018, he had 10.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and 24 quarterback hits.

Don't expect much in the way of pass rush from Reed, but he has the potential to be a very solid contributor along the Packers interior on a rotational basis.

Reed had 6.5 sacks and five tackles for loss in his final season in Seattle in 2020, then tallied 2.5 sacks and two tackles for loss in 2021, his only season with the Chiefs.

Nice job BG. Always liked this Kid. Hope he has no recurring bad habits and fills in for KC.
Slaton Clark and Reed...where's the beef now?

Any hopes of the Packers drafting either Davis or Wyatt probably just bit the dust. Too bad.

But this may not be a bad signing at all-- we plugged an obvious need in the short term. He's a solid run defender and very durable, though you'd like to see a little more pressure on the QB. Maybe he can resurrect that part of his game with Green Bay.

"Any hopes of the Packers drafting either Davis or Wyatt probably just bit the dust."

I don't think so. Reed is only on a one-year deal and they also have Keke's spot to fill.

I hope you're right, but Keke's spot is more likely to be filled by another Day 3 pick than a premium one unless Gute changes course.

Drafting Winfrey and having him just come in and play as a rusher in passing situations his first year would be awesome. That would be a very solid collection of guys upfront.

I like it.

Winfrey in the second round is ok...maybe a little high...and a steal in the 3rd at #92 (probably too low). Low floor, high ceiling, non stop motor and over time could become a 3 down player. He would be an upgrade in the DL room, for certain. PFF has him 81 on the top 150.

Should absolutely not change any draft plans. It's a one year deal. The first round is about long term investment. If those guys are there (I'm dubious) you can still take one.

Makes sense to me, but all I'm going on is Gute's history of not prioritizing the DL in the draft. As a fan I'd like to see one of these two guys in a Packer uniform, but we've been down this road before, so I'm not allowing myself too much hope.

So, we see that Brian Gutekunst do not prioritize following position in draft: 1. DL, 2. ILB, 3. TE, 4. WR, 5. S (with exception of Savage), 6. K, 7. P, 8. KR/PR, 9. RB (with exception of Dillon), 10. OLB (with exception of Gary). Only position BG prioritize is CB.

But you never have enough good CB, haven't you?

A solid get. He's a step up over Lancaster. They still have Keke's spot to fill.

BG always seems to fill the big holes prior to the draft and give himself the latitude to follow opportunities on draft day. This fits that mold very well.

I’d say this is a move to replace Keke. It buys time to develop. He’s not a DT. Is that Slaton?

Long overdue solid depth signing by Gute. Kenny Clark gets a veteran presence who can actually play a little.

The added attention to defense now frees up more draft capital for the offense.

If they are also able to add Whitney Mercilus, then they have the luxury of being able to draft more developmental prospects for the front 5.

I still see them taking an OLB by R3 (maybe earlier) due to it being reported as a deep class - at least now the temptation to reach for a DL prospect is mitigated somewhat.

That shite wasn't %'in funny at all!

Now we can go out and draft Devonte Wyatt, Jordan Davis, Perrion Winfrey, Travis Jones or Phidarian Mathis...

Imagine how good our front could be with Reed, Davis, and KC...

I liked him more than Clark in the 2016 draft. Definetly wrong about that but he does have one more career sack than Clark. Has the 22nd most pressures amongst IDL over the last two years.

He's a better DE than Lancaster and a better 3T than Lowry and probably signed for less than he made from the Chiefs last year. Pretty hard not to like this signing.

Now add Wyatt or Winfrey to this group and the defense could be scary.

I can not like it. Big name. Couldn't reach an agreement on an extension and refused to restructure with Seattle. Played on a one year deal with KC. There are no sighs from Chiefs' fans longing for his return. They are fine to see him go: it was 100% expected.

He has to come cheap. Under $3M. He looks a little washed to me.

PFF had him as their 3rd highest rated IDL in the playoffs. I guess he started slow last year but played better when the Chiefs moved Chris Jones back inside, as did the whole defense.

He was not good early in the season but improved In The second half and was excellent in the playoffs. Interestingly his sacks were down (2 1/2 and one in playoffs), but his run grade was better than expected. He still isn’t Lancaster, but more robust than Keke and can still disrupt. I like this as a holding move. It buys us time needed, and on paper I think quite well.

“I liked him more than Clark in the 2016 Draft”

There’s that chestnut about short term gap filling vs long term positional anchoring.

Like with Davante Adams, we shouldn’t expect an immediate explosion onto the scene by a WR if taken early.

In 2019, Reed, following his 10.5-sack breakout season, was suspended by the NFL for the first six games of the year for a violation of the personal conduct policy. While he was not charged or arrested, the league confirmed the suspension was due to a 2017 incident in which a woman claimed that Reed had assaulted her at 3 AM. The Bellevue (Washington) police initially opened a domestic violence case based on the incident but Reed was never charged.
When the announcement was made that the NFL had suspended Reed, despite the local police failing to charge Reed, the local media questioned why Reed wasn’t charged and dissected the police report in public. According to the police report, Reed allegedly grabbed the woman by the throat, dragged her across the bedroom floor and stairs by her feet and ankles, chased her and broke open a bathroom door before being held back by people identified as other Seahawks employees.

Like the player, do not like the domestic violence problem. Hopefully Gute and Company did their research and are convinced this was a one-off problem and Reed has grown up since then. You always worry about character issues like this, but you also don't want to permanently indict someone for a single mistake. Tough call, hopefully Gute made the right one.

Kenny Clark has got to be the happiest guy in Packerland tonight. He finally has some help. And given Gute's track record of drafting behind FA signings (remember drafting Rashan Gary after signing the Smiths?), don't be surprised if he drafts a DL if the right one is available.

Well....apparently, he went crazy over a woman. I don't condone the violence, but I do understand just how nutty you can get when the little head is doing the thinking.

He was a good player coming out of college, a legit first round player. He's not old. We only dress 5 DL and right now he'd be one of them for sure.

This does seem to fit the pattern(s) Gutekunst tries to fill as much as he can prior to the draft. Moreover, once again, we do it with a cheap vet, so that rookies get time to develop (hopefully).

I like this. This is good.

Actually, TGR, upon further review, there are quite a few more details that would really make this an exciting movie.

Apparently (and that's the word I'll use, since I only know what I've read) Reed knew this young woman from the Atlanta area, and he'd flown her out and they were hanging together at a party. At least one teammate was there.

The party/situation including a dancer (alternatively known as stripper or ho.) who rubbed Reed'sdate/ girlfriend the wrong way. There may have been words exchanged about a previous relationship between Reed and the dancer. Reed's date/girfriend didn't think this was very much fun, so she went upstairs and packed her stuff and moved it to another BR in the same house. Reed told her to "get out" , or words to that effect. When that wasn't immediately forthcoming, Reed did knock the door in and it got physical.

Calmer heads intervened. The police were called and arrived. Nobody was injured enough to want medical attention. Nobody was arrested. Nobody was taken away. Reed apologized. This was 5 years ago.

That's what I know from what I've read. I'd also go out on a limb and say that at 3:00 a.m. in the morning, alcohol may have been a factor. Yes, I know, that's a shock to some people that young people do sometimes drink a little too much and do crazy stuff. I hardly see a villain here at all.

You can deflect your neanderthal thinking by calling me names all you want. But it doesn't change the fact you like having a 300 lb man who drags women across the floor being a member of the Packers. I don't. But it's nice that you "like it". My wife deals with battered women every day. What she "understands" is how enablers like you keep the cycle going.

What part of "I don't condone the violence" is too complicated for you, Princess?

We live in an imperfect world. People do wrong things all the time. I'm not going to judge people I don't know based on one incident in their life, and that's one of the many differences between us.

For a chick who doesn't like name calling, you sure do it a lot, Princess.

Hickes is talented, but had serious injury issues the last two years - didn't play in most of the games over the last two seasons. Hicks is also 32 and injury issues don't get better with age. Reed is 29 with minimal injury history.

He looks like an upgrade over Kingsley Keke or Tyler Lancaster, as Keke had pass rushing ability and Lancaster was decent against the run. It looks like Reed can do a little bit of both and has had some decent seasons.

I view this signing as an upgrade although ya never know until they prove it on the field.
