Packers Sign Tryout DB Charles Clay

While still no word on Colt Lyerla, the Packers signed a defensive back with 4.4 speed as a tryout player.

The Green Bay Packers have signed defensive back Charles Clay, his agent—John Perez—announced on Twitter on Monday.

Clay, out of the University of Hawaii, took part in the team's rookie minicamp this past weekend on a tryout basis.

After the signing of Clay, the Packers roster currently stands at 89 out of a possible 90 players, potentially leaving open one more roster spot for the team to fill without having to release anyone.

There has been no word as of yet whether the Packers have signed former Oregon tight end Colt Lyerla or any other player.

Clay appeared in all 12 games at Hawaii this past season, starting six, finishing fourth on the team with 69 tackles, 5.5 for a loss, one sack, one forced fumble, two fumble recovers, four pass breakups but no interceptions.

Growing up in Hawaii, Clay originally followed former Hawaii coach June Jones to Southern Methodist, where he redshirted in 2009 and played primarily on special teams as a redshirt freshman in 2010.

In 2011, Clay transferred back to his native Hawaii and played on special teams and as a backup wide receiver.

Then in 2012, Clay switched sides of the football to defensive back, where he's stayed ever since.

According to, Clay was invited to the NFL's Super Regional Combine where he measured in at 5' 10 1/2" and 202 lbs. He also ran an impressive 4.42 seconds in the 40-yard dash and had a 37 1/2-inch vertical.

Clay played safety at Hawaii, but his 4.4 speed perhaps makes him a candidate to play cornerback in the NFL. As such, he would seem to fit the profile of low risk, high reward player that will take some time to develop but could pay dividends.

In addition to defense, Clay would also appear to provide value on special teams as someone that made 15 tackles and three forced fumbles exclusively on special teams in 2011.

Sounds like the type of player the Packers like to invest development time into.
