Packers Select Tariq Carpenter in 2022 NFL Draft - Round 7

The Packers got a safety/linebacker hybrid

{Tariq Carpenter, Georgia Tech, safety}

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

6’3” | 230 lb | 8.9 RAS

CAREER NOTES:

Carpernter saw action in all 12 games and made nine starts at safety in 2021. He appeared in 52 games in five collegiate seasons, including 50 straight to close his career. Tallied 41 career starts, all at safety, though he could also play linebacker at the NFL level. He ranked fifth on the team and second among college defensive backs with 65 tackles in 2021. He led Georgia Tech with nine tackles at No. 6 Notre Dame (Nov. 20) and six against No. 1 Georgia (Nov. 27).

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

The four-year starting safety is making the move to linebacker, where his size, speed and aggressive demeanor should help him fit more cleanly than at safety. Carpenter is a natural in run support with clear eyes and a physical approach in the box. Taking on blockers in a faster-paced game could cause bumps in the road early on. He has good pursuit range, average body control and the potential to guard tight ends. Carpenter was an excellent pro-day tester, so the traits and special teams talent could buy him an early opportunity on a roster as he learns the linebacker position.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

There is not much depth behind starters Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage. Moreover, Amos will be a free agent in 2023. So, it's smart for the Packers to add a safety, who can play in the box as well. Carpenter is an aggressive, hard-hitting safety with plenty of experience in the collegiate level.

COMMENTARY:

As a seventh-rouder, Carpenter shouldn't generate much noise, but he is a good value and could help immediately on special teams. The Packers announced him as a safety, so this is the position he should play on defense. In his first press conference as a Packers right after being drafted, Carpenter said he knows how he could help in 2022, saying "I'm going to go in there and do anything I can. I know the thing when I come in there is going to be special teams."

Starting Safety for 4 years at GA Tech. I like it.

Unlike Burks who came in to be #1 an ILB ... and #2 a ST player....Carpenter will be STs #1 and a backup S or hybrid #2.

Bisaccia should enjoy coaching him on his STs.

Been mocking Carpenter for a month. Nice Gutey...once again I bow down.
Wyatt, Ryhan, Toms, Enagbare, Carpenter all on my mocks over and over; very nice...Wheres Monday, Ross, Moon, Diesch and McKinley or Nelson?

Good call on Carpenter FTF. Big tall dude that should find a very comfortable home on ST at first. Packers love anyone from a college with Georgia in the name.

This is very unlike last year when almost no-one I wanted got drafted (except 7th rounder Kylin Hill). This year there are loads of well liked (by Packer fans) guys.

Watson and Tom are probably the most popular. Doubs too, and the Ebagbare pick seemed popular as it came fairly late relative to where most thought he'd go. Lets hope the fans are right and we have some excellent picks.

I'm seeing 6'4" 225 4.52 speed. Swipes at tackling. Gives up body.

OT Penn State Walker. Can never have enough Walker's. Promising prospect in 2020 but did not play well in 2021.

He's going to need some serious coaching but he has shown he can do it with his great measurables. Mr. Butkus, make your mark!

I think he's an outstanding pick at this stage.

S. Toure, WR, Huskers. Another ST player who will likely play on Sundays as he shows he is a WR for the Pack.

And that is a wrap. And that was a good draft for Team Gutey. It is almost Beer O'Clock for the draft room men.

I always have a special place in my heart for underdogs and Tariq Carpenter certainly fits that bill, but he has some game. I think he has a very good chance on ST's to begin with. Going to be really rooting for this guy!
