Packers Select Royce Newman OT in 2021 NFL Draft - Round 4

With the 142nd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select Royce Newman, OT from Ole Miss to bolster their depth.

Royce Newman, Ole Miss

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

6'5" - 310 lbs
5.15 40-yard dash
4.75 Shuttle
7.91 3-Cone
23 Reps on Bench

CAREER NOTES:

Newman finally got into the starting lineup for the Rebels in 2019, beginning all 12 contests for the team at left guard. The four-star prospect played as a reserve the previous two seasons, playing in nine games as a redshirt freshman season and 12 the following year. As a senior, Newman switched to right tackle, where he played quite well in all 10 games. He accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl. -- by Chad Reuter

SCOUTING REPORTS:

Has the ability and experience to be considered at guard or tackle. Hand placement and technique as a run blocker are generally good. He has the athleticism to handle stretch plays and long pulls effectively. He can redirect his weight and adjust to moving targets as a second-level guard (2019) and showed improvement in his pass protection fundamentals in 2020. Newman stays connected and sustains blocks, but will struggle against strong two-gappers inside. He looks like a Day 3 prospect, but his position versatility and movement skills could give him a leg up in future roster battles. - NFL.com

Royce Newman demonstrates some athleticism on the edge in his body control and agility. In the run game, he is more of a positional blocker than a vertical mover. He doesn't play with good in-line power, but has value in his versatility and movement skills. In the passing game, he demonstrates good footwork in his pass set. He lacks good power in his punch but demonstrates the lateral agility that affords him upside if moved inside to guard. - The Draft Network

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

The addition of Newman provides some much needed depth to the offensive tackle position as well as someone with the versatility to kick inside if needed. With David Bakhtiari injured, that left Green Bay with Elgton Jenkins, Billy Turner, and Yosh Nijman as the only tackle options on the roster. At a minimum, Newman provides added depth to a premier position, and hopefully, he can develop into a starting right tackle of the future.

COMMENTARY:

Newman was Ole Miss' starting right tackle in 2020, allowing two sacks and 25 pressures on 430 pass blocking snaps. In 2019, he palyed both guard positions, giving up one sack and 10 pressures. He comes from an offense where 62 percent of his run blocking snaps came in zone.

projected UDFA in round 4. This is the same as taking Jason Spriggs round 2 over Deion Jones. Dylan Moses and Daviyon Nixon couldnt have possibly helped our defense that keeps us out of the Super Bowl I guess.

Is it the defense that keeps us out of the Super Bowl, or an offense that underperforms in the big games? I mean, if you average 30+ points a game, and you're at home, and you go out and have multiple turnovers and are held a TD under your average........there's no blame there?

2011...four turnovers in a playoff loss.
2012...a weak performance by the offense and the defense on the road loss.
2013...a narrow loss at home. We scored 20.
2014..A team effort for sure, but the offense was held under their season average in the loss.
2015. ..The year without Jordy. We struggled to hit 20 in the playoffs
2016.....A great stretch run followed by a poor offensive performance at Atlanta.
2019.....A team loss where the offense had a bad day.
2020....Multiple turnovers and 26 points....well under our season average.

As far as us going to the Super Bowl this year, nothing would derail that faster than having our starting QB injured because we didn't have enough good people to protect him.

35.8 points allowed per game in our playoff losses. Yes, blame that on the offense. In the playoffs you are going to face the best defenses in the league unless your facing the Packers defense.
So to expect to score at your seasonal average is an unrealistic expectation especially when in 2011 the team has just suffered the loss of their OCs 21 year old son who is not much younger than most of the players on the team and the starting offense has not played in 3 weeks because they had a playoff bye and they didn't play the last game of the season because it was meaningless and the Giants had a great defense which also held the Pats to under 20 points in the SB.

In 2012 the defense was blown off the field by a running QB who they were unable to tackle even when they hit him. Terrible preparation and execution by the defense. End. of story.

2013, the team was fortunate to be in the playoffs at all and most the team was on IR when they went into the playoffs. Our QB was still recovering from his injury and we had one to play OLB.

2014 the defense completely folded up with a 12 point lead and less than 4 minutes to play. They gave up 14 points easily in a little over 2 minutes because there was over a minute on the clock when Rodgers, yes Rodgers, playing on one leg lead the team to a game tying FG. Then a few plays into OT they gave up another easy TD, game, season over.

2015 with WRs who didn't belong in the league we still managed to tie the game in the 4Q only to have a rookie CB trying to cover one of the best WRs in the league that season and yes another easy TD, game, season over.

2016 The team went on a brilliant 8-0 run which Rodgers literally carried the team by himself into the playoffs.
By the time they reached the NFCCG they were playing their 16th consecutive game due to an early bye week and the team was decimated with injuries. But yes, the schedule and the injuries were the fault of the offense as always. OK ,that's knowing what you're watching.

2019 - The defense was blown off the field by the SF offense with a 3rd string RB and allowed 285 yards om the ground and you're blaming the offense which was playing against one of the league's best defenses and you're the offense had a bad day. Um, no wrong, just wrong. Case closed.

2020. You forgot to mention that the defense allowed 3 easy first half TDs, 2 from Kevin King alone, and 31 points total in the game but again that's on the offense which was facing one of the best defenses in the league again, OK that makes sense. Not to mention that the Packers were totally out prepared and out coached before the game even began.

Why aren't you asking when is our defense going to play as well as Seattle's or SFs or Tampa's? When are they going to hold an opponent to under 20 points instead of allowing 36 PPG in our losses? You expect the offense to be perfect but it's OK for the defense to be unable to tackle, to let guys run open all over the field and to have no idea what defense they are in at the most important points in the game. Coaches, anyone, anywhere?

And BTW, I have been kind. I haven't even brought up our STs which have sucked for there last 10 seasons and cost us at least one of those playoff games if not 2 or 3 more with their poor punting, lousy coverage and return units. But yes, blame the offense because they don't score the 40 or 50 points we need to overcome the bad defense and pathetic STs. Yes, that works.

I guess you will still be blaming Rodgers after he is traded and the Packers go 4-12 this season.

Thanks Fabio. I don't know how else to say it except that if the other players on the Packers played their positions as well as Rodgers plays QB we would be undefeated SB champs. But apparently to many other fans it's all Rodgers fault so we should get rid of him and turn our roster over to a guy who hasn't played football in over a year at any level and who has yet to put on a uniform in an actual NFL game.

Good way to show that Rodgers guy who's right and who's wrong.

We're building for the future. And if the future is 4-12 or 5-11 for the next 3-5 seasons or longer, no problem we're there. Good job, Packer management. But hey the stadium is sold out and PackerWorld is open so all is well and the beat goes on. Who needs another Lombardi trophy anyway. Thanks, Since '61

What are you talking about? Nobody here wants him to leave. It's his choice because he feels insulted because we drafted a Qb that might start in 2023. " Uh hello, Rod can you please let us draft a future QB " You make it sound like we drafted the second coming of Manning or that Rod is 27 and on his 7th year. We really set him up with a terrible roster where he had to do all the work. Tell that to Aaron Jones who leaves his heart on the field and has a 13 mill guaranteed contract.

Completely agree. The dirty little secret is that there have not been many (any?) playoff losses where the offense was utterly brilliant and completely heroic in a shootout loss. Maybe the AZ game before the SB win. But even that one ended in OT with the offense giving up a defensive score.

Yes, the defense has sucked in many ugly playoff losses. But the offense is not blameless.

I think this is a good pick. He's versatile, which is in keeping with what Gutekunst has looked for in offensive linemen.

He apparently held his own at the Senior Bowl, and that's a good sign.

I wanted people to protect our QB and give him time to work, so I'm happy with the double dip of Myers and Newman.

When a QB says he wants the GM fired after saying he doesn't want to come back to GB, this reads Rodgers won't be back but wants to leave some carnage behind. Since I'm about the team, I'm for letting Rodgers go, and see if Gute was right about Love, the poison pill that started this whole mess, though some will still deny it wasn't time for drafting the next QB, especially at the expense of losing another chance for the SB, and now the likelihood of missing out on many more in the very present future, as collateral damage from that selection.

I don't understand why when Brady forces NE to renounce his choice on Q (Garoppolo) he does well and if Rodgers does it with Love instead not. I think that AR's reaction (with JL's choice) has been consciously provoked for some time to put the blame on AR. The only problem for Gute is that he thought it would happen next season ...... I am also for the team and for this I would choose Rodgers over Gute, but I know it will never happen in Green Bay (Not surprisingly NE won 6SB and us 1)
What I don't accept is that our GM has known about AR's will for a long time (confirmed by all management) and therefore (since he can't stand it) he could have found a solution a long time ago (exchange and acquisitions draft + players picks) giving life to a general reconstruction of the team and without re-signing players who have cost us a lot of money unnecessarily
I thank you for the answer.

Nobody watches an NFL game to see the GM sit in the executive box and yawn. People watch to see the players play so speaking for myself I'm for Gute leaving and AR playing so that we actually have a chance to win some games and maybe even an SB. But for all I know GMs are part of DraftKing now and you can place bets on how well the GM runs the team and handles his HOF players. That could be a reason why some fans want to watch the GM sitting in his executive box on Sunday. Thanks, Since '61

Tampa Bay:
WR:
A. Brown - M. Evans - C. Godwin
YOU:
R. Gronkovski
C. Brate
OJ Howard
RB:
L. Fournette
R. Jones II

In my humble opinion only D. Adams Tonyan and one between Jones and Williams can match this list ..... but then what could have made the offense really good? I say it: AAron Rodgers
I'm really curious to see the team's performance when (without Rodgers) the defense will be constantly forced to stay on the pitch for a long time ...

Really?? I'm certainly an AR fan and he's done wonders for the GBP but he doesn't run the team. If his feeling are hurt let him retire. I'd rather be 4-12 with Love than 13-3 with Rogers and him running the show, either way we don't win the SB so what's the difference, other than we have a diva calling the shots.

Whether our QB is Rodgers or Love, they'll play better if they're well protected. That's a fact. In fact, you could make the argument that if it's Love, he'll need more time in the pocket to throw. And if Rodgers has time to do his job, this offense is unstoppable. Our offense didn't struggle much last year, but when it did, Rodgers was under pressure.

From the group of our best 9 offensive linemen who started last season, we are missing Lane Taylor, Rick Wagner, and Cory Linsley. Bakhtiari is injured. We need some more bodies, and I don't think Gute has lost his mind.

they can be competitive. because there is a shitload of talent. Im just disgusted by this. im trying to blame gute because i love rodgers. The truth is he had an off year in 2020. every one saw it. the numbers backed it up. 60 percent completion. 24 tds. pedestrian almost. But gute shouldve known better than to draft a qb without at least giving rodg one more year in that system with lafluer to get it right. part of being just an every day supervisor at your bs 9 to 5 is not just about getting the best person suited for the job but about managing egos. Gute is not running a wendys. Hes managing The oldest, most beloved franchise in the best league in the world. You have to know aaron rodgers and how hes going to react if you make a big move like he did. I honestly am just praying that 12 was just trying to get the gute to draft a wr. because if thats the case, gute did. and a 5 foot 9 wr at that! not a typical packer pick. I hope thats enough for aaron. because yeah sure we can be competitive but we will not win more than 7 games with this schedule playing the rams niners cards seahawks chiefs steelers browns ravens saints. maybe 8 games. thats it. I wasnt ready to just be competitive. I was ready for one last run with 12. but im just a fan. herbert had stuff to work with in la. he won how many games? so yes im curious but no im not fucking ready. im 32 bro. i grew up at the bar watching favre when i was 7. then i watched rodgers. im a spoiled fan as are the rest of gb fans my age and younger. just not ready for it to end.

It looks like Gute still has his snout in the offense trough; I mean, going back to last draft and the re-signing of Lewis, how many lineman and other blocking types do you need?

So apparently the comment about our defense being at the "tipping point of dominance" was not GM speak. Those UDFAs, waiver wive pickups, and very low draft picks are long-term solutions that will help our defense gain the upper hand come playoff time and finally get us over the hump. I'm starting to think Mr. Gute is slightly delusional and may need professional help.

Thank you for the blessing. Just for the record, I also need professional help, but am very good at disguising it.

Barnes and Martin really stunk it up last year. Can't you at least give him some credit with being able to find some talent with all the UDFAs on the roster of a highly successful team.

He drafted a CB in 1 and a DL in 5. I was screaming for a DL as well, but If the board said there wasn’t 1st 2nd or 3rd talent there. Nobody took a nose or interior in the 1st round this year...that’s the first time I’ve seen that. And with a new DC... I’m not even your of which style defense they’re gonna play.
