CAREER NOTES (from NFL.com)

Valentine crossed the border from Ohio to Kentucky after starring in football and basketball at Cincinnati's Archbishop Moeller High School. He played in 10 games with one start as a true freshman (10 tackles, one pass breakup, one forced fumble). Valentine started 12 of 13 games played in 2021 (61 tackles, 1.5 for loss, five pass breakups) and then led the team with 10 pass breakups as a junior (48 tackles, 1.5 for loss, one interception in 12 starts).

NFL SCOUTING REPORT (from NFL.com)

Valentine has the physical traits necessary for the NFL but the instincts and body control to extend his coverage against quality route runners leaves something to be desired. He’s solid at crowding vertical throws and can play press-and-bail, but he has had coverage busts in zone. Also, he bites too easily on double moves. Valentine’s lack of aggression as a run defender could make it tougher for zone teams to give him a chance.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

Valentine is ideally a man corner, because he doesn't have the phisicality to defend the run in zones. He is an athletic prospect, with a 9.29 Relative Athletic Score. Most of his snaps at Kentucky were as a boundary corner, so he might give them depth in the case Eric Stokes isn't healthy in time for week 1.

COMMENTARY:

With multiple seventh-round picks, the Packers could use one of them for depth reasons, and that's what they did acquiring Carrington Valentine. He's a low-floor defender, but his athletic profile at least might allow him to help RIch Bisaccia on special teams.

X marks the spot?

Ran the 40 in 4.44 at the combine. Feels most comfortable in press man coverage … he’s only 21 so he can probably learn to play 3 yards off.

Long arms, good explosion. I actually think he might be good in a more aggressive, tight coverage D, like Stokes was. Better at covering the man than reading routes.

Not a bad 7th round pick.

Maybe Barry is finally looking for players in his new scheme. More man coverage instead of zone. 😉
