Packers Running Back Situation In Flux Due to Injuries
By GilMartin

The Green Bay Packers have one preseason game remaining and less than one week before the roster has to be down to 53 players. The team entered training camp pleased with their depth at running back after revamping the position over the offseason. Now, however, at this late date in training camp, injuries are causing issues with the running back position.
The starting running back will be Josh Jacobs. Jacobs dealt with some injuries earlier in training camp but is now healthy and should be ready to play in Week 1 when the Packers travel to Brazil to face the Eagles. But behind Jacobs, the team presently is dealing with injuries that place a cloud over the depth at the position.
Veteran backup A.J. Dillon did not practice Wednesday due to a stinger. He suffered a similar injury late last season in a win over the Minnesota Vikings.
“I think any time you have a repeated injury, absolutely, there is a concern,” head coach Matt LaFleur told reporters on Wednesday. “I think we’re being cautious with him and just making sure we gather all the information before we let him go back out there.”
A stinger is a nerve injury that often causes weakness in the arm or hand. Obviously, this can be a big problem for a running back who needs to hold on to the football while being hit by multiple players trying to not only take him down but to also pry the ball loose.
The Packers are still unsure how long Dillon may be unavailable. Will he be ready for Week 1? Will the Packers have to place him on injured reserve? The team is waiting further information from doctors about Dillon’s status.
Last year, Dillon did not play in the final regular season games or either playoff contest last season after suffering the stinger.
The Packers also selected running back MarShawn Lloyd in the third round of this year’s draft. The coaching staff was excited about Lloyd’s cutback ability and explosive offensive potential after seeing him at OTAs.
However, Lloyd suffered a hip injury that caused him to miss time early in training camp. The former USC star returned to action and played in the Packers first preseason game against the Browns only to suffer a hamstring injury that forced him to leave the game early. Lloyd has yet to return to practice in the week and a half since he was sidelined.
That leaves Emanuel Wilson available as the next man up on the depth chart. The second-year man out of Fort Valley State led the NFL in rushing last preseason and made the Packers roster as an undrafted free agent.
This year, he has again looked good in training camp and the preseason. In the first game against Cleveland, Wilson led all Packers players with 67 yards rushing on 13 carries. He also scored a touchdown in the second quarter that put the Pack up 14-3.
While his statistics weren’t as impressive against Denver last Sunday, Wilson still gained a lot of yards after contact according to Pro Football Focus which indicates that the run blocking by the backup offensive linemen was the cause of Wilson’s lack of productivity.
The Packers have two other running backs on the current roster and one fullback. The running backs are Ellis Merriweather and Nate McCrary while Henry Pearson is the fullback.
McCrary played in one regular season NFL game back in 2021 and carried once for minus-one yards. Merriweather has yet to appear in a regular season contest in the NFL. Pearson played two games for the Packers last season but did not run the ball or catch a pass on any of his 11 offensive snaps.
Would the Packers feel comfortable with any of these three options if Dillon and Lloyd are not ready to play in Week 1? Will GM Brian Gutekunst risk rushing back either Lloyd or Dillon or will they look to sign another running back who may be familiar with the team’s offense as a stopgap measure if they aren’t ready to play?
These are the tough decisions facing Gutekunst and the coaching staff as we get closer to making cuts and determining the initial 53-man roster.

The Packers looked pretty comfortable with Wilson last year before he hurt his shoulder, and reactivated him in the playoffs. I can’t help feeling that there’s too much drama with respect to him potentially being the number 2. Based on performance, ball in hand and in protection this summer, he should have only further alleviated any concerns. He’s also shown pretty good hands, as he did last week. I’m not even sure he’s not number 2 without injury to Dillon.
Lloyd is a change of pace back at this point. Unfortunately we have not seen if his protection has improved enough from college. Hopefully he’s added to whatever mix soon and earns some snaps for that purpose and gradually more if he can show protection and ball security in practice.

Josh Jacobs and MarShawn Lloyd are locks. That leaves Emanuel Wilson and AJ Dillon vying for the 3rd RB slot. I think they are only going to keep three. I believe Wilson gets the nod. They know what they've had in Dillon and it hasn't been enough and that stinger probably just knocked him out. If they keep a fourth, it'd probably only be as protection against Lloyd's injury status. Once Lloyd is healthy again, bye bye fourth man.

Lloyd to IR. Wilson, Jacobs and Dillon on initial 53.

Depending on the Rookie's injury status, maybe they just put him on that IR thingy for the first 4 games and roster the other 3 RB's. Over that 4 games whoever is playing the best between AJ and Wilson stays on while the other gets let go.

"Veteran backup Josh Jacobs did not practice Wednesday due to a stinger. " Should be Dillon.
You may want to correct this sentence in the 4th paragraph, Gil.
I expect Dillon to start the season on IR. And Wilson will prove on Saturday (with some blocking) he is the back up for Jacobs. Lloyd will be the third back to start the season (likely won't play Saturday). I expect him to be schemed into the IOC Offense to start the season & let him learn as he goes.
Ravens practice was mostly a good one for the Packers. Back up QBs played about as good as Love did (Love was fine but had INT). Doubs, DuBose, Kraft (he may be the #1 TE now!) put on shows. Reed and Heath contributed.
1st and 2nd teams Defenses were solid to excellent. Solid pressure on the QBs. Safeties were making plays all over the field, especially Williams and Xavier, but also Johnson Jr. Williams had an INT and played well in run and pass. He is going see the field a lot this season.
Looking forward to the game Saturday!

Stick with Wilson. Even though the OL couldn't help him much in the Denver game, he still had a nice 15-yard gain off a spin move he used late in the third quarter.
This shouldn't be a tough decision at all, and Wilson is already familiar with the offense.

Injuries will determine this depth chart, apparently. GB likes to bring rookie RBs around slowly and Lloyd is even more behind with the loss of practice time and current status. They might be without Dillon or Lloyd for some weeks, and will have to rely on Jacobs/Wilson/Pearson (someone not on the roster). But they will likely need all of them over the course of a 17+ game season and post season. They might need to IR Lloyd or Dillon or both, opening the way for Wilson to stake his claim.

I think Lloyd goes to IR. If both he and Dillon are unavailable, they could use Pearson, but he seems more of a threat catching (if he’s on the roster). Merriweather has quietly had a good camp and might also be an option in the short term, either elevated from the PS or initially on the roster.

Pass on every play, like the Aerial Circus at UW-Stevens Point in the 70s. We have the people that could do it.

May not help Love’s health.
