Packers Reportedly Promote DL Luther Robinson from Practice Squad

The rookie defensive lineman would fill the open spot on the Packers' 53-man roster.

A day after losing cornerback Jumal Rolle from their practice squad, the Green Bay Packers reportedly filled the empty slot on their 53-man roster.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network:

The Packers were thin at the position, entering the season with only five true defensive linemen on their roster.

They got even thinner this past week when Josh Boyd injured his knee in Sunday's game against the Bears and didn't practice this week, listed as doubtful for Thursday's game against the Vikings.

It remains to be seen whether the Packers are promoting Robinson in time to have him active for the Vikings game. The Packers have played three of their four games this season with only four true defensive linemen.

For the first time since placing linebacker Andy Mulumba on injured reserve Sept. 19, the Packers will be required to have seven players on their gameday inactive list.

Hybrid elephant end type of players like Julius Peppers, Mike Neal and Nick Perry can and will play in the trenches, although they can't provide the girth of a 300-pound player like Robinson.

Robinson was with the Packers in training camp, released on the day of final roster cutdowns and later added to the practice squad. Although he played in all four preseason games, Robinson wasn't credited with a single tackle.

The rookie defensive lineman played his college football at the University of Miami (FL).

Including the loss of Rolle, the Packers now have two openings on their practice squad.
