Packers Receive Two Fourth Round Compensatory Picks

The NFL has announced that Green Bay has been awarded picks for the loss of Davon House and Tramon Williams.

The Packers have been awarded two fourth round compensatory selections in the 2016 draft, numbers 131 and 137 overall.

From the league:

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

The compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through sixth rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.

Compensatory picks may not be traded this year.  A rule change approved by clubs in 2015 will permit compensatory draft picks to be traded beginning in 2017.

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors.  The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council.  Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

The selections are reward for losing Davon House and Tramon Williams.

As the league notes above, this is the final year that compensatory selections can not be traded.

Given that TJ Lang and Sitton were both 4th rounders, I hope Ted can put those to good use...

looking at some NFL draft projections for players ranked around 120-150 , probably some very solid talent there , and as you stated , our 2 top notch guards, also Mike Daniels? i think were drafted around 4th rd.

Or maybe we could get Tyler Higbee with one of those picks in the 4th round. You'd HAVE to like that WKU!!

Would any of those who were frustrated with TT last year want to give one of these fourth rounders back so that we could have made Julius Thomas the highest paid TE in the league last year?

The Mighty Julius had fewer receptions, yards and TDs last year than Richard Rodgers, and he costs 9.2 million per year. Oh yeah, and the fourth round draft pick.

Not so easy to complain about Ted now, is it?

Harder, yes, but one can certainly nitpick. I didn't find one comment (on this site) suggesting that we should have paid House or Williams what they got. As for your fixation on Julius Thomas (you also mention Thomas in another article), I had no interest in him (See ALLGBP link), and I didn't find any comments suggesting paying through the nose for him. See the links below.

http://allgbp.com/2015/02/25/2014-packers-position-group-analysis-tight-...

The only real issue left is whether some of us would have forfeited one or both of these comp picks by dabbling in FA. A few would have, of course. I advocated offering Tramon 2 yrs. at $8 or at most $9 million, but then, by many reports, so did TT. I advocated for Rob Housler as a flyer, but he got too much guaranteed money (1yr 1.75 mill). I don't think signing Housler would have affected the comp picks. Housler did nothing. The SBnation link below provides a list of FAs in 2015 to refresh memories.

This year Hayward (5/6th), Raji (6th?), Neal (6th?), and Tolzien (7th/nada) might be guys we lose who might garner comp picks next year per overthecap (link below). Trevathan and Green both are projected as 5ths, so signing either forfeits the 5th for Hayward (I think Green and Hayward for that matter might slip to a 6th - depends on how crazy things get). I would have been willing to forfeit the comp pick for Green, though his concussions scare me. Trevathan depends on what TT is going to do in the draft and with Raji. I'll put it this way: I like Trevathan much better with Daniels, Reed/Raji, and Pennel/Guion than I do with Daniels, Guion/Pennel, and Jones/Pennel. I wouldn't have done both.

[Edit: I can make the argument that TT should only sign FAs who don't affect the comp picks. TT's 5th rd. picks: Hundley, Linsley, Abby, Hyde, Boyd, Manning, D.J. Williams, quarless, Newhouse, Quinn Johnson, Meredith, Giacomini, Clowney, Ingle Martin, Moll, Coston, hawkins. More pluses than minuses. Ladarius Green is the 18th highest paid TE - production so far does not really merit that level of compensation - the question is why.]

Forgive me if I don't click on the links, but whatever people THOUGHT Davon House or Tramon Williams or Julius Thomas (or anybody else) would get paid is entirely irrelevant. A real NFL team ACTUALLY DID pay those players, and the salaries that they were given are not subject to debate.

If you yourself agree that those players were overpaid, and that in addition to the overpayment we would have had to give up a nice compensatory pick, what part of TT's actions are you "nitpicking?" Doesn't that mean he did the right thing?

Mentioning Julius Thomas twice is a "fixation?" OK. I chose to mention him because people were saying that the Packers needed help at TE, and Thomas is obviously a tight end. I suppose I could have said Ndamukong Suh, or Brandon Browner, or DeMarco Murray, or Chris Culliver, or Cary Williams, or Byron Maxwell, or Dwayne Bowe, or Andre Johnson, or Greg Hardy, or.....

I would respectfully submit that you missed or ignored my point. The point is that I am not giving TT the kind of credit for garnering the 2 comp picks that you would, mostly because I think that letting Tramon and House walk was a no-brainer. The links to the Cheesehead comments were simply to show that there was unanimity of thought about letting those two walk, so TT´s decision does not show any particular brilliance on his part. His decision was correct, solid, but hardly brilliant.

Getting comp picks is a two part equation though: 1) you have to let players walk; 2) you have to refrain from signing FAs that would cause you to forfeit those comp picks. I give TT little credit for part 1, and some credit for part 2.

FAs that we discussed last year included Thomas, Jordan Cameron, Housler, Wilfork, Knighton, Foster, and perhaps a few others. Not many here would have paid the $ to get Thomas or Cameron. Since TT got Raji to sign on March 30, Wilfork and Knighton were unnecessary. I give TT credit for correctly foreseeing that he would get Raji back and thus we did not have to sign a NT.

Looking forward, I put the excellent link to Overthecap in to help us assess what players we let walk will bring in comp picks. Perhaps we should limit ourselves to signing only FAs that do not affect comp picks - that is what I think TT does (no, I cannot know for sure). Right now Hayward looks like he would garner a 5th, possibly a 6th. Neal looks like a 6th - it depends on whether TT lets him walk and what his contract looks like (and how much playing time he get or honors he earns). I think Ladarius Green would have made us a better team than what the 5th or 6 comp pick would, and I think it helps us to draft BPA instead of addressing need. You might disagree, and that is fine.

They've got enough ammo to trade up and get Darron Lee.

Lee's the only player I'd trade up to get. Also like Conklin, Fuller, and Floyd.

I don't really see that the Packers need to spend a first rounder on D-line. There will be plenty to choose from in round 2.

Two 4th rounders is what I expected and I'm glad to hear it. Ted has done very well in the 4th round (Mike Daniels, Josh Sitton, TJ Lang, David Bakhtiari, etc.).

After seeing the market value and obscene price tag the Raiders paid for their Guard, there is little chance the Packers can keep Lang and Sitton next year. Time to draft at least one Guard and one Tackle. Bulaga can't stay healthy and Barclay is long gone.

J.C. Tretter was also drafted in the 4th round in 2013, the same year as Bakhtiari.

I think it's great we have extra ammunition for the draft.

However, let's clamp it a bit with the "TedTeds awesome in the 4th" stuff.

Like your portfolio disclaimer, "Past performance does not indicate future results".
We have two more shots at the craps table. Im good with it
