Packers QB Aaron Rodgers Wins Second NFL MVP Award

The Packers quarterback becomes just the eighth player in NFL history to win the award multiple times.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named the 2014 NFL MVP by the Associated Press at Saturday evening's NFL Honors awards show, held the night before Super Bowl XLIX.

This marks the second time Rodgers has been recognized with the same honor, having also been named MVP for the 2011 season. He becomes just the eighth player to win the award multiple times.

"That’s a great list," said Rodgers. "To be mentioned with those guys is an honor, and like I said up there with Peyton (Manning), ‘You set the gold standard.’ He and Tom Brady, as far as quarterback play in my generation. Peyton’s won it five times; I mean, that’s incredible. But twice, it feels great. It just means that there’s been some consistent play. That’s what I pride myself on – a consistent approach every week and a good preparation and making the plays that my teammates expect me to make.”

Along with Brett Favre and Bart Starr, the three Packers quarterbacks have combined for six MVP awards. Favre leads the way with three MVP awards in 1995, 1996 and 1997.

All told, the Packers have won eight MVP awards with Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor also winning the award.

On the season, Rodgers led the NFL with a 38-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He also completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 4,381 yards with a 112.2 passer rating while chipping in 269 rushing yards, with a career-high 6.3 yards per carry, and two more touchdowns.

Rodgers' achievement is all the more remarkable considering the injuries he played through during the 2014 season, including a hamstring pull in the Week 8 game against the New Orleans Saints and a strained calf that hampered him the final two games of the regular season.

“So much has to come together for this to happen. It was a tough year, injury-wise," said Rodgers. "I had the unathletic hamstring and calf pulls, and just dealing with those. My training staff and my acupuncturist and my massage therapist deserve a lot of credit for getting me back on the field. But it was tough; it was a tough grind to get through it, but that’s what we do as players. Nobody’s healthy at the end of the season, and we all put our bodies on the line every week for our teammates.”

Among Rodgers' season highlights were coming back from injury in the season finale against the Detroit Lions to help the Packers clinch the NFC North division title and a bye in the playoffs.

He also directed a comeback on the road against the Miami Dolphins in Week 6, which was recognized as the league's Never Say Never Moment of the Year. Rodgers threw the winning touchdown pass with just three seconds left in the contest, set up with a fake spike and completion for a first down the previous play.

Rodgers also threw six touchdown passes in the first half of a win over the Chicago Bears in Week 10.

The Packers quarterback was also named the Air NFL Player of the Year on Saturday evening, a sponsored award from FedEx. He previously was named the MVP by the Pro Football Writers of America earlier in the month.

Rodgers was also a finalist for the Walter Payton Man of the Year for community service and excellence on the field, but did not win the award that went to Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis.

Would Teddy entertain the idea of signing F.A. Juluis Thomas? Weak at blocking but so was Finley, could solve Red zone offensive woes? Or do we wait 3-4 years to develop TE and hope R.R makes big jump next year? Did Hall of Famer Wolf bring in another T.E. to match up with Chumara and oh yes we won SB that year

Nope, never had a guy from Boston college wearing no. 89 named Chumara. Ain't got no stinking memory problems. But it appears at least a couple others do.

What about Jordan Cameron from the Browns. Would be cheaper.

Of course the answer is no. But still.

I think he had it won before the Lion game, but 2nd half on one leg put him over the top. He's had 2 injuries now over the last 2 years and the calf cost the Pack a SB this year. Keep this o-line together and keep him healthy and SB 50 will belong to the Packers.

the texans went 9 & 7 this year and almost made the playoffs.

without JJ Watt they win 1-3 games.

With Matt Flynn at QB, the Packers have a very good shot at winning their division and getting into the playoffs.

Rodgers may be the best player in the league. In my opinion he's the best player to ever play the game. But JJ Watt was the Most Valuable Player in the NFL this year.

Ben, you cannot be serious. Flynn, while being a very nice guy, is a rag-arm. Tolzien should have won the QB2 and will next year. No way do we make the playoffs or win the division with him at the helm.

Next year Flynn, Hawk and Jones are gone, the Packers go 14-2, and we win the Super Bowl. A Rodg gets a 3rd MVP.

"No way do we make the playoffs or win the division with him at the helm."

I've got to be kidding???

doug, jim, you are aware that Chicago and Minnesota are in the division? The only competition for the NFC north was the Detroit lions who Flynn torched for 480 yards and 6 touchdowns. 480 YARDS & 6 TDS! Thee greatest QB performance in freaking Packer history. He did it in a playoff game. He's a national champion.

Now I'm not saying Flynn is a great QB, but yes doug, I am saying the packers could have won the division or got into the playoffs with Matt Flynn at QB.

Seriously.

"NO WAY do we make the playoffs or win the division." - you dummy doug.

Next year is Super Bowl 50...a milestone. Karma says the Packers win SB 50 and Rodgers gets MVP for the year and MVP of SB 50. It is only right and proper we bring the Lombardi trophy back for this milestone occasion.
