Packers Practice Roundup - August 1, 2023

MISCELLANEOUS:

Packers have released Camren McDonald & Chuck Filiaga per Packers PR.  Herman

Packers claimed James Empey off Waivers, awarded to GB on Monday, per Packers.com.  TGR

The Packers have signed TE/WR Andre Miller, a first-year free agent who was cut from the NY Giants last week. The 6-3, 234-pound Miller was a wide receiver at Maine but the Giants switched him to TE. He lined up with the ERs in early drills.  Silverstein

Coach Matt LaFleur says Peyton Manning addressed his team yesterday. Discussed lessons he learned in the league, what it takes to be a pro: "I though it was super beneficial. Certainly, you're talking about one of the all-time greats."  Wood  [There are some stories of Peyton's conversations with Jordan Love, Christian Watson, and Jaire Alexander.  TGR]

Practice done after one hour and 54 minutes.  Demovsky

Honestly not a big time player of the day today but I’ll go with Bo Melton who had a nice play in one-on-ones and the big td catch on the day. Offense does up downs again.  2) [Regarding the closed practice on Monday that was padded] Packers defense dominates the offense in 2 minute and most of the day. Two huge plays - Love to Watson for 60 yard td and Valentines pick 6. Players of the day for me (on Monday): Carrington, Valentine, Karl Brooks, Christian Watson, and Rasul Douglas.  Herman

INJURIES:

Dubose, Stokes, Wicks, Gary, Hanson not practicing so far.  Herman [I watched Dubose in particular ran hard during the entire practice - some sprints and some cuts -  with a Defensive Quality Control person watching him for the bulk of practice.  Not sure if Hanson will be out for some time and that's why Green Bay claimed Empey or if GB just liked Empey.  TGR]

Also, Josiah Deguara and David Bakhtiari appeared to drop out of practice. Tyler Goodson got shaken up but came back.  Demovsky

QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:

Packers bring an all out blitz against Etling who throws a gorgeous deep ball to a wide open Bo Melton in the end zone for a td. Beat Valentine on the play.  2)  Love hits Watson on a quick out. Now 6/12 on the day. It sets Carlson up for a game winning fg.  3)  Really nice inside run by Emmanuel Wilson who takes a bit of a shot from SJC.  McGough read option but Phillips all over it. Packers have tried 3 read options today and Packers defense stopped all 3 for a loss. McGough’s ball tipped at the line but somehow Cody Chrest comes down with it.  [A couple of positive mentions in camp so far for Wilson. TGR]  4)  Love likely sacked as the pocket collapsed but throws complete to Watson over the middle (5/10). Nice opening on the left side for Nichols for a nice pickup. Mix up on the run play with McGough. Easy stop for the defense. McGough nice slant to Chrest. Tyler Goodson limps off the field.   5) Tom back at center with the ones. Yosh at RT.  Pearson getting some legit looks at FB with the ones today. False start on offense.  Nice run fit by Savage for no or minimal gain for Jones. Van Ness the primary edge opposite Preston with the 1s today. Love’s pass tipped at line. 4/9 now.   6) After another fumbled exchange (Myers/Clifford) - Clifford throws a pick right to Jonathan Owens. Per Marques Eversol, Clifford's pass was tipped at the line. 7) Love hits Reed in the end zone. Contested but catchable on a bullet. Dropped by the rookie. 4/8 for Love now..  8)   Love incomplete to Watson. 4/6 now. Nowhere to go on the play. Love corrects Malik Heaths positioning at the line. Fades away and tries to find Davis but throws a bit behind him  - Gaines with the PBU. 4/7.  Another read option for Love. Wooden and Douglas all over it.  9) Red zone: Myers is the center. Tom is RT.  Love wide of Doubs on an out. First miss of the day. (3/4).  Love has fantastic protection and finds Musgrave wide open for the TD. Nice find by 10. (4/5).  10) Pop pass to Tyler Goodson who was lined out wide. Defense all over it. Ballentine with the stop.  12) Those Jayden Reed end around hit different. Didn’t pick up a ton by he’s so damn fast. packers finally have a speed weapon running those plays.  13) Love finds Musgrave on a little dump off for a nice pickup. Love has not been afraid to take the easy check downs and I love it.  Another Read option keeper for Love but defense isn’t fooled. Went nowhere.  14)  Love with a great out route to Watson. He’s really mastered that throw early in camp. 2/2 to start. Myers and Etling fumble an exchange. 3rd fumbled snap of camp.  15) Austin Allen TE over Leavitt.  Doubs beats Jaire again. Melton over Gaines to a big cheer. Jayden Reed td. Offense dominating. SJC Pi on Heath again.  Tyler Davis drop vs Moore.  Nixon int on Toure.  Bonds beats CB Tyrell Ford.  16)  Oh my god Cody Chrest with an insane one handed catch along the end zone sideline in 1x1s. Wow!!!  Ballentine great coverage.  17) 1x1’s: Watson beats Douglas on a slant. Musgrave outraces AJJ [Anthony Johnson, Jr.] deep and makes a stumbling catch. Doubs just made an unreal 50/50 grab against Jaire. Great great play. Melton beats Gaines.  SJc probably PI on Heath.  Tyler Davis just beat someone clean but a Clifford air mailed it.  WR Duece Watts beats CB Kiondre Thomas. Jonathan Owens had great coverage but nice contested catch by Kraft. Jadadkis Bonds with a deep catch over rookie CB William Hooper.  Toure smokes Nixon deep for a huge catch.  Musgrave beats AJJ again.  Herman

Jordan Love shows some good pocket awareness in goal-line drill, holding the football a couple ticks longer until Luke Musgrave came open in the end zone. Otherwise, goal-line drill belonged to the defense, holding offense without a TD in 6 of 7 reels inside 10.  2)  Crafty play from Jordan Love. Had nobody open deep off action fake. Stepped up and flipped it to open Luke Musgrave at LOS for 10 yards. The type of improvisation that makes you think Love learned a little something from Aaron Rodgers.  Wood   [Both of these plays noted by Ryan Wood were included in the paragraph with Andy Herman's tweets - I thought they added a little information and should be included.  TGR]

RUNNING BACKS:

Lew Nichols just stiff armed Kiondre Thomas into oblivion.  2) Clark eats Aaron Jones on the second play. Dillon just ran over Quay Walker. The contact is coming in hot with pads on.  3)  [During the Monday closed practice}  Lew Nichols with a drop on a checkdown. Also dropped a pass in individual drills. Hands have been a major issue for him early.  Herman

True fullback Henry Pearson gets a rep with the starting offense, sets lead block for Dillon.  Hodkiewicz

FB Pearson digs a block and Nichols gets a nice 8 yard pickup.  Demovsky  [So, two nice reps for FB Pearson.  TGR]

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:

Short on centers, Jon Runyan snapping with twos in team.  2) Rhyan had a nice day, winning four reps. And Elgton Jenkins is the man.  Hodkiewicz

Sean Rhyan went 5-0 in one on ones. Beat rookie Colby Wooden on all five. Good showing for him.  Wood  [Rhyan is a noticeably large offensive lineman.  Listed at 321 pounds, and I've little doubt he is all of that.  TGR]

Zach Tom mentioned in the locker room today that he put on 15-20 pounds in the offseason, allowing him to create more movement in the run game. “I feel like I’m able to get a little more movement in the run game than I was last year. I feel like my anchor is better than it was.”  Demovsky

Tom at center with the 1s.  Huber

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:

It's still early, but it really looks like Devonte Wyatt is taking that proverbial next step. He is flashing in every aspect of the game.  Nagler

Devonte Wyatt had a day in one on ones. Two reverse pancakes.  Hodkiewicz

Devonte Wyatt with 2 of the most impressive power rushes you’ll ever see in 1v1. Blew up Josh Myers with bull, knocking him 2 yards on his butt. (Myers won first rep vs. Wyatt.) Later, Wyatt knocked Jean Delance on his butt after beating him with a speed rush. Awfully good sign.  [Same plays as noted by Hodkiewicz.  TGR]  Wood

Slaton gets some push and tips a Love pass in team.  Demovsky [Slaton showed some push in Monday's practice, as well.  TGR]

A significant change on defense for the Packers. The emergence of T.J. Slaton and Devonte Wyatt means Packers' Kenny Clark won't be playing as much nose tackle.  Silverstein  [This makes a nice headline, and he might end up being right, but I would put this in the maybe category.  TGR]

LINEBACKERS:

Enagbare and Hollins blow up a designed rollout by Clifford. All over it.  Herman

Brenton Cox with a couple move pressures vs 3s in deep red zone.  Demovsky [Good to hear, but note it came against the number threes.  TGR]

SECONDARY:

Matt LaFleur says he thinks the Packers have "a good, young player" in Carrington Valentine, who had a pick-6 yesterday: "He's extremely athletic, has made those splash plays. I love the way he competes."  2) Jaire Alexander says pass defense coordinator Greg Williams has been stressing for him to play closer to LOS: "He's been helping me with my alignment, because sometimes I have a tendency to play a little farther off. So he's just been trying to tighten my leverage down."  Wood

Valentine started OTAs with the third defense and is now consistently with the 2nd team on the boundary, and may be CB4 on the depth chart with Stokes out. Yesterday Valentine continued to make plays, coming away with a pick 6 off Etling.  Bretl

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Miss from 38. Good from 45. Good from 47.  2/3 overall so far.  2) Carlson misses from 50. Good from 48. 52 yarder drilled with a high snap. 4/6 so far on the day.  3) Carlson drills about a 45 yarder. Now 4/7 on the day.  [I think this should be 5 of 7 made.  TGR]  Herman

Carlson with two more kicks in end-of-game situations: 45: Good 52: WR Now 12-of-20 for the rookie kicker.  Demovsky  [This is a little confusing as Andy Herman seems to indicate that the 52-yarder was good while Demovsky suggests that it was wide right.  I thought Carlson went 5 for 8.  TGR]

RED ZONE - 2 MINUTE DRILLS;

Etlings turn. Same situation in 2 min. [1:05 on the clock.]  (Down one): Complete to Malik Heath on a quick out. 8 yards-ish.  2nd and 2: Melton gets some separation from Ballentine on an out but Etling overcooks it. 3rd and 2.  False start offense. 3rd and 7: Etling to Heath over the middle. Clock runs. First down. New set of downs.  Etling to Heath on a slant. Quick 5 yards but clock runs. 2nd and 5: Etling finds Watts over the middle for a nice pickup and a first down. New set of downs.  Stops the clock on a spike with 7 seconds left. 2nd and 10: Purposeful incomplete to burn some more time off the clock. Anders on for the tie. Carlson misses the kick. 5/8 on the day.  Defense dominated the vast majority of the day.  2) 1st and 10: Love incomplete to Reed. Broken up my Nixon. 5/11 on the day now. 2nd and 10: Hits Dillon on a checkdown for minimal gain and can’t get out. 6/12. 3rd Down: Tries to connect with Watson and gives him a chance with Douglas in great coverage. Incomplete. 6/13. 4th down and Reed had a step on Savage on a deep crosser but Love overthrows it. 6/14. Tough day for the ones on offense.  Herman  [It was a very tough day on offense for Etling, Clifford and McGough.  Not much worked in 2 minute or goal line from the ten yard line.  TGR]

MONDAY CLOSED PRACTICE TWEETS:

Love throws his first really bad pass of camp in the opening 2 minute drill play. He threw it right to Quay dropping in zone and Quay just dropped it.  2) And love follows up with a rolling out fading away deep throw to Jayden Reed and puts it right on him but Reed can’t hold on. Not sure if Reed would have stayed in but that was one hell of a throw.  3) Jordan Love 60 yard touchdown on a 9 route to number 9. Watson smoked Gaines and Love put it on him. Great play by Love.  4) Royce Newman getting some right guard reps with the ones for Runyan. Message sent possibly? Devonte Wyatt forces a clear and obvious hold on Elgton Jenkins. Love scrambles for a few yards but a great rush from Wyatt that would have drawn the penalty.  [Newman replaced Jenkins and got first team reps at LG as well, so maybe no message sent, just rotating in.  Ambiguous, anyway.  TGR]  5) Karl Brooks just shot through the line with haste. Goodson got outside but that’s two disruptions from Brooks today.  6) Called run play but Love makes the correct read and sees the space available on the slant. Hits Watson in stride. Nice awareness by 10.  Herman

Jordan Love dropped couple perfect deep balls in 1v1s with WRs and DBs. Hit rookie TE Tucker Kraft on a corner to right sideline over coverage from Anthony Johnson Jr. Ended with a perfect go back down left side to Bo Melton vs. Kiondre Thomas. Love looking comfortable deep.   2) The Packers are flush with slot options, from Jayden Reed to Samori Toure to Romeo Doubs. Sounds like Matt LaFleur wants Christian Watson to still get some slot snaps. LaFleur says having a dynamic WR line up everywhere on the field is a bigger challenge for defense.  Wood

MY OWN OBSERVATIONS DURING TUESDAY'S PRACTICE:

1).  I watched Karl Brooks exclusively for a while.  I thought he had some nice bull rushes that pushed the offensive linemen pretty far backwards several times.  2) I thought Gaines had some very nice plays, but he also had a lapse or two.  3) Rudy Ford did some nice things.  He's a guy I didn't think well of after last season, so I was happy to see him be in the right place and make a play or two.  5)  Aaron Jones was active and looked good.  6) The speed on offense is noticeable just in general.  Chrest, Melton, Watson, and Reed in particular (made me think that the Packers' handheld 40 time for Reed of 4.37 is legitimate), can all be serious vertical threats.  Musgrave moves so well, while Kraft looked quicker than I had expected.  7) I expected some of the big guys to make some noise during the second padded practice of TC.  And some did:  Dillon, FB Pearson, RB Nichols' stiff arm, Wyatt, and from the reports as I apparently was looking elsewhere, Sean Rhyan.  I had hoped to see some of the other big guys make an impression on me, like Jonathan Ford, Caleb Jones, Enagbare (who nevertheless is having a pretty good camp so far), but if they made some plays, I didn't notice it.  There is a lot going on during practice.  I tend to watch and concentrate on one area of the field; I don't know how these media observers see so much of the field, especially while tweeting simultaneously.   TGR

Aaron Wilson reports that the packers will sign center Cole Schneider. They would have to make a move to open a spot for Schneider.

I doubt Rhyan beat Colby Wooden five times today. I thought it was twice. I could be wrong.

Myers is again inconsistent. I thought Brooks, Wyatt, and Slaton have all given him some trouble so far. Probably Kenny Clark has as well, but I don't recall a specific instance.

Slaton has provided some push during TC so far. Maybe that can free up Kenny Clark to play DE more. We shall see.

I thought Brooks played bigger than his listed 296 pounds. He had some nice push a couple of times at least.

Sounds like you had a great day, TGR. Appreciate the report immensely! Wish I could have made it up... but, Aug. 17th joint practice with NE if you're available would be great...

I'm really glad you took some time to watch Brooks. He certainly is an interesting player. Glad to hear both he and Rhyan are looking & playing bigger than listed. Did you notice same with Tom by any chance? He said he put 15-20 lbs on this offseason!

First rate stuff. Props.

Kenny Clark shouldn't be asked to play DE, IMO.

He's where he should be in the middle. He's a two gapper. Despite his appearance, he's a brute strength and anchor guy, not a shed and move guy.

I agree that Clark's best position is NT. Unfortunately, the personnel only has Slaton and Clark is probably a better DT or DE than anyone else on the roster.

I can't wait for the joint practices this year.

It is so difficult to get a true read on a player vs teammates. Is one good or is the other bad?

I am hoping that the competitive fire has been established throughout the locker room.

The coaches are definitely on the watch list this season.

I'll be going up Thursday, August 17th for the joint practice with NE. Should be fun! Are you living West Coast, JB?

I think this team mentally is dialed in proper. Everything I've read or seen on video, players are excited, playing with that kind of energy you speak of.

I will be in Alaska on the 17th! 7 thru 24 to be exact.

I am living in sunny and steamy Florida now, but I just accepted a job that will have me galivanting all over with a semi-home in both Cali and F-L-A.

Carlson BARELY missed on his misses. Huge leg. I'll give him all off season to impress.
I thought Rhyan looked pretty good, too.
Pearson looked like Kuhn out there--caught my eye.
Valentine looked great out there. Looks like a starter.
Jayden Reed's burst is impossible to miss--I don't remember a Packer who had more of one. I think he's going to be a GREAT punt returner and gadget runner.
The only receiver who seemed to get really open regularly was Melton.
Musgrave looks like a great check-down option; he may end up converting a lot of first downs this year. Quietly looking good at TE: Austin Allen.
Slaton has me excited...I hope it's not just poor OL play...
That one-hander by Chrest was awesome, and he looked good on crossing routes, too.
I really liked the composure that Love and McGough both exhibited today.
DuBose looked good in his drills--I really liked his college tape, so I hope we get to see him in the preseason.

"The only receiver who seemed to get really open regularly was Melton."

GG's been hyping him for two seasons now. I hope he can make the squad this season. I suppose he'll have to shine on STs to be able to do it though.

WHEW!!! (brow wipe, flick!) LOL...

The thing about Bo Melton is he literally had one of the most inaccurate QBs throwing the ball to him. Taking out screen passes, Melton's Uncatchable Target Rate was the 7th worst in Power 5 over a 3 years span.

If a WR can overcome that, he's got to be special.

In 2021 with his QB ranking #2 in FBS in Uncatchable Targets with 23,Melton was able to rank #19 in Power 5 in Deep Receptions. That SCREAMED TO ME, "This kid can catch!"

Bo Melton makes the Biletnikoff Award Watch List 2021, Team MVP 2021, All-ECAC Offense 2021 award, Biletnikoff Award Watch List 2020 and the Hornung Award Honor Roll 2020. Ranked #6 in Rutgers history with 164 receptions. #8 In Rutgers history with (5) 100 yds games. Melton also was an FBS leader in YAC. Plays very tough, clearly able to adjust readily, and has the hands any OC or WR Coach would envy.

Melton, (5-11 189 4.34, 38" vertical, 4.34) is a diamond in the rough. His separation was in the 86th percentile. And, he's TOUGH! ELUSIVE! Melton has every good characteristic you look for in a WR. Comes from a football family too, as his Dad played at Rutgers.

"QB's Best Friend" qualities for miles. I wanted the Packers to draft him so badly, and when I found out Gutekunst signed him in December, I lost it. Wonderful addition to this team.

He's got the qualities to have the same kind of impact at WR in Green Bay as Jayden Reed. Bigger than Reed. He reminds me a ton of AJ Brown in build and skill. Powerful and polished. Having both players is insanely cool.

I can't do what you apparently do. I can't have one eye looking at the north end and the other looking at the south side. I am too linear in my focus and thinking. I will just watch several reps of the IOL or the IDL, for example, and get an idea of how those three or so players on the DL and their opposing OL in my area of focus performed on that series of reps. Sometimes I don't even really see what happened on that play - what the WR or TE did or the DB or LB did. I watched Van Ness when he was line up opposite the RT for 3 to 5 plays. He did have one rush during which he gained enough ground to perhaps disrupt a QB. He may have been working on something, etc.

I had a side view of Carlson's field goals. I agree that a couple looked close (but no cigar, of course), but I rather thought a couple were wide by perhaps 2 yards, but while I was not at a 90 degree angle, I didn't have a good one to judge just how close they were. I agree that none were horribly wide, and one was a doink. In golf parlance, no duck hooks! IIRC, most were wide right. Herman had him 5 for 7, but I would have said he missed 3 or 4, anyway. There was a doink, one that was wide right but a good margin (enough for me to know it was off well before it reached the goal posts, and a close miss. I could be wrong.

The fact that when Bakh is on the field, Tom is getting 1st team snaps at C is bad news for Myers.

Tom's strength coming into the league was his agility and smarts. He needed to get stronger. If he's done that and his added weight doesn't slow him down too much, he's quite a find.

I bet we’ll continue to see ups and downs with Carlson, but I’m wondering why there aren’t a ton more kicks in camp. I believe he is like 12-20 so far in camp. That seems like it should be about an hour’s worth of work. Don’t kickers kick like 50/day? Or does he just have such limited time with the whole FG unit?

I, too, love the checkdowns by Love.
If a defense overplays our wide receivers, and there's a running back or tight end wide open for a short pass that yields a good number of yards after catch, why not punish the defense by taking advantage of the easy opportunity.
Then, paradoxically, the short completions will help to open up the long ones to our speed burners.
