Packers Practice Round-Up. Day 5, August 20, 2020

Practice was 1 hour and 54 minutes for veterans. The rookies got some extra time and reps after the veterans were excused per Hodkiewicz. Part of practice was in pads.
GENERAL/PERSONNEL:
Gutekunst acknowledged he has no additional information beyond his own scouting reports on other players, which means he will be making decisions [I assume about players on other teams waived at cut downs and the like] based on either his own scouting reports and/or something someone like me wrote. So much for us not knowing anything about football. Gutekunst made the decision to restrict what the media could write. Silverstein
Gutekunst happy about and for Kenny Clark. Notes that there are a bunch more players he'd like to keep. Huber [Not sure what that means, so....]
Adrian Amos was excused for the day to deal with a personal issue. Wood
No updates on injured players: Nijman, ZaDarius, Patrick Taylor, Roberts, Stepaniak, Bolton, and M. Adams. Hodkiewicz
Wagner went into the locker room to be examined. Silverstein
Lewis is in pads. Adams, Z. Smith and Linsley are not practicing. Wood
It is nothing serious with Z. Smith and Adams. Amos will return soon. Linsley did practice at times, as did Bakh. Hodkiewicz
QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:
Gute on MVS: he had a really good day today. It is just seeing that day in and day out. Wood
False start by MVS in the two-minute drill. Herman
MVS with a diving catch when Rodgers led him too far, and then had a nice catch on a crosser. Wood [Herman thought the coverage was good and that's what necessitated the diving catch. Different takes, maybe a different angle.]
Rodgers and MVS not on the same page. Great coverage by King. Herman
Rodgers to MVS for a nice gain over the middle. Sullivan in coverage. Herman
Love can move in the pocket. Schneidman
Best series by Love so far. Drove the team down for a FG. Shepherd caught a tight [laser per Schneidman] pass from Love and held on despite a hit. OLB Ramsey with pressure on the play. A second nice catch by Shepherd from Love on a sideline pass. Sternberger with a catch from Love with Burks in coverage. Will Sunderland breaks up a pass intended for Malik Turner from Love. Shepherd had another catch earlier. Herman
Love hits Malik Taylor in stride down the sideline. Hodkiewicz
Boyle throws a nice, crisp out to Deguara. Herman
Sternberger open over the middle but Boyle missed him. Not on the same page. Nagler
Rodgers checks down to Jone even though Sternberger is breaking open deep. Nagler
Lazard beat Alexander on an inside move and later leapt over him for a reception. Wood
Passing offense continues to struggle against the #1 DBs (who shall not be named). Ervin finds some space for a reception against a zone defense. Herman
Deguara makes a nice catch despite good coverage by Greene. He looked like a natural receiver. Later Deguara drew a blatant DPI on a double move during another rep. Wood [DPI would have been against Greene per Herman.]
Great move by Tonyan on Greene to break open in the middle and Rodgers hits him for a nice gain. Nagler
Beautiful last step separation by Begelton against Ento. Perfectly executed route and catch. Herman
RUNNING BACKS:
Nice catch downfield by FB Lovett from Boyle. Vernon Scott initially had great coverage but played the ball poorly. Herman
Lovett with a blatant push-off of Vernon Scott downfield. Scott had good coverage. Schneidman [Same play as above. Different angles, probably.]
LaFleur says he has been impressed by Lovett. Laughs when he says he has to go back and look at tape to see if there was a push off on his go route. Hodkiewicz [Sorry about 3 entries on the same play - just noting that the media sometimes has different takes and now with distancing different angles/view of the plays.]
Dillon with a complete whiff in the pass pro drill. Nagler
Dexter Williams was not so good in the pass pro drill. Owzcarski
Great blitz pick-up by Williams on the final play. Nagler [thinking J. Williams, not Dexter]
Aaron Jones with a special cut back on a block by Tonyan on a stretch play. Poetry in motion. Hodkiewicz
Boyle to Dillon down the seam. Nice placement and Dillon hung on despite a hit by Redmond. Herman
Boyle to Dillon up the seam and Dillon hangs on to a bullet from Boyle with the safety bearing down. Hodkiewicz [I think this is the same play as above. Dillon's hands seem fine.]
OFFENSIVE LINE:
Light got sucked inside and Gary ran a stunt outside. Gary had a free shot at Rodgers. Wood
Light and Jenkins struggled on a stunt. Rodgers unloaded it and was unhappy. Rodgers chatted with Tonyan after the play. Herman [No idea what why AR spoke with Tonyan or with whom he was unhappy. Maybe all three players.]
Delontae Scott bull rushes Leglue for a would be "sack" but Boyle throws a nice ball to ESB. Herman, Wood
Nice blocks by Turner and Tonyan to spring Aarone Jones for a big run. Rushing attack is far ahead of the passing game. Herman
Thought Taylor, Jenkins, Runyon and Keke looked good. Tipa Galeai with two wins off the edge. Hodkiewicz [Sounds like one on one pass rush drills.]
Gary with nice pressure against Wagner. Herman
1x1s: Turner/T. Williams 2-0; Taylor/Lowry 2-0; Patrick/Lancaster 1-1; Light/P. Smith 1-1; Wagner/Gary 1-1; Conway/Keke 1-1; Hanson/Previlon 1-1; Leglue/Ramsey 1-1; Zack Johnson/Garvin 1-1; Patrick/Delontae Scott 1-1; Leglue/Galeai 0-2; Jenkins/Clark 0-2. Schneidman [Big Kenny taking care of business.]
Nice blocking on an outside run by Ervin. Herman [Jenkins was quoted yesterday noting that the blocking on outside zone runs has improved with a year of experience.]
LINEBACKERS:
Gary seems to be better able to use his arms and shoulder to exert force this year. Shoulder looks healed. Herman, Silverstein
Another pass to a RB and another stop by Kirksey. Anything less than 5 yards sideline to sideline Kirksey has been all over since camp began. Herman but others have written similar things.
Greene with a leaping pass break-up on a deep shot from Love. Huber
Checkdown to Jamaal but quick stop by Kirksey. Toss to Dillon but nothing doing. Tim Williams failed to hold the edge but still a minimal gain. Herman
Tonyan seals Burks outside creating a big lane for Aaron Jones on a toss to the left. Nagler [Wondering if this is the same play as the "poetry in motion" tweet under running backs by Hodkiewicz.]
Tipa breaks through for a "sack" and DeShaun Amos with the PBU on Boyle's throw/unloading it. Herman, Nagler
DEFENSIVE BACKS:
King with great coverage forces Kumerow to run out of bounds. King looks good today. Herman
Stanford Samuel with a pass break-up. Love tried to fit one in to Kumerow in the back of the end zone. Herman [Seems I find a positive tweet about Samuel in every article, but usually just one per day. Still good to see.]
Ento shoots off a block for a "tackle" of Lewis. Herman
Ento with a pass break up. Hodkiewicz [Ento having a good day - Nagler]
Great coverage. Preston benefits from it and gets the sack. Herman
Great coverage by Vernon Scott against Sternberger. Herman
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Crosby went 4 for 4 in drills. 33 - 50 yards out. Apparently, he also made a 48 yarder in the team session. Hodkiewicz
JK Scott with a fairly solid punting session on a breezy day. Got some spirals to turn over. Spofford
Scott averages 47.9 yards and 4.54 hang time on 11 punts. Huber

I chose to use a photo of Tonyan, but there were several candidates, including King, Ento, Samuel (really because his name comes up positively in every practice, but not multiple times in any one practice), Deguara, and others. Lovett got some love as well. It sounds like Sternberger was active and open a few times, but I am a sucker for TEs who block, and Tonyan got some kudos for blocking and also caught some passes.
I thought I'd go with Ento or Samuel because they are more on the bubble than Tonyan. Probably not my most objective moment.
Sounds like Hodkiewicz wasn't talking about one on ones when he wrote that he thought Runyan, Jenkins, Taylor, and Keke had good days. Schneidman didn't list Runyan as participating in the 1x1s, he had Keke splitting his reps with Conway, and had Jenkins losing both reps to in the 1x1s to big Kenny Clark. Note that it can be hard to tell if two guys are talking about the same play or thing.
I should probably break out the tight ends and give them their own heading. I am listing Greene as a linebacker, which is arguable. I liked reading that Gary looks healed up and stronger in the arm/shoulder. Hated the pick, but he had a ton of talent and it would be great if he blossoms.
Overall a positive day. A number of observers thought the coverage was sticky in general, particularly as to the number one defense.

I don't think anyone mentioned Hollman in Thursday's practice or in any other practice for that matter. Quiet camp, I guess. I have hope for him.

Great job of reporting training camp insights. Tipa, an unknown, seems to be making some noise. Let's see in three weeks if we still hear from him.

I’m excited to see how Tonyan and Burk turn out after spending the summer with Kittle. I’ve been impressed with Tonyan’s potential in the past and those workouts and teaching pointers from Kittle can only help his development. In addition, along with Burks it sounds like intense workouts and better diet.

Phantom downvoters are everywhere and act on who-knows-what motivations. I quit looking at up/down votes a long time ago. It's liberating.

It's not the content of the post.. at some point or another, you said something that someone didn't like, so now they automatically down vote anything you post- because they have the maturity and mental capacity of a child.

I’m eating this stuff up TGR. Thanks. It’s pretty amazing how stoked I can get just reading that Tipa Galeai did something to someone in some situation. I guess I really missed football.

Thanks TGR. Sounds like Gute is going to be leery of picking up free agents in season. (This season we're all 'experts') At times Gute as a GM is so upfront it's scary. I wonder if Ted and Ron talk to him about dialing it back...
