Packers Periscope: Barry Blues, '97 Championship and More

In this week's periscope, we lament Matt LaFleur and his far too trusting approach to his staff, look back at the first ever meeting between the Packers and Panthers in a rather big game, and more.

Look, I want Joe Barry gone too. For all the times the defense looks good, there are exponentially more where they look inept, soft, lazy, slow and just overall poorly coached. It's not like this group lacks talent. And they've shown at times they're talented. But they're out of position too much and I have to think Matt LaFleur is just doing his coach a solid by not openly trashing his game plans in press conferences. On the subject of LaFleur, he's proven to give at least one too many chances, sometimes more.

I know it has to be hard to fire someone but ultimately, these decisions are costing the development of the team. When you have such a young group, you need the very best coaches to get them in position. They need to learn how to communicate, how to be in the right spot. They need to be put in the best position to succeed and they're not.

I fully expect Barry to be let go, but I'm not surprised LaFleur is letting him see it through. Consistency is also a good thing, but not at the cost of the locker room. Cryptic comments on social media are usually indicative of something larger at play so if those increase, it'll affect LaFleur and his standing among the rest of the team, too. The offense has developed plenty this season. The same cannot be said for the defense, and that goes to their leadership. I don't know much... but I do know that Joe Barry will not be the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers in 2024.

Now, time to turn the page to this week's Christmas Eve match-up and opponent, the Carolina Panthers. So up goes the periscope to take a look at the past, present and future of the Packers and Carolina Cats.

The Past

The Packers lead the all-time series 11-6, with the most recent victory coming in 2020 on a snow-covered Lambeau Field by a 24-16 score. The Packers have taken the last two in the series and three out of the last five. But the last visit to Carolina in 2017, with Aaron Rodgers just returned from a broken collarbone, was a 31-24 victory in favor of the home team.

However, one particular match-up between these two foes stands above the rest. January 12, 1997 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI with a -17 wind chill. The Packers hosted the upstart Panthers and their coach Dom Capers in the NFC Championship with a trip to New Orleans on the line. Everything broke right for the Packers that year, although I'm sure there's some lament we weren't able to get Dallas in that game for some true revenge. But, alas, it wasn't meant to be and in came Kerry Collins and one of the league's newest franchises.

With all the energy and excitement for the game, though, Carolina came out swinging. After the Packers forced an early punt, Brett Favre was intercepted inside their own five yard line setting up Carolina for a bunny touchdown from Collins to Howard Griffith to make it 7-0. The ensuing kickoff, though, phenom Desmond Howard popped a huge return into Carolina territory and the Packers run game got into field goal range, but kicker Chris Jacke missed.

At 7-0, The Packers got it back and used a balanced attack, led by Dorsey Levens, to get quickly back into scoring range. One of the game's most iconic plays was a Favre-to-Levens 29-yard leaping touchdown grab to put it at 7-7. After a John Kasay 22 yard field goal, the Packers scooted back down the field again, when Favre hit Antonio Freeeman for 6 yards out on a nasty sluggo route from 86. With time winding down in the second, Collins went deep but was picked in impressive fashion by a leaping Tyrone Williams. The Packers were able to make them pay with a late Jacke field goal and 17-10 lead at the break.

In the second, the Packers built on their lead. Getting the ball, Favre chunked the offense down the field, even using his patented acrobatics to keep the chains moving. But the drive stalled and another Jacke kick extended the lead to 20-10. After an impressive Carolina drive stalled out, Kasay cut it to one possession at 20-13. But that would be it for the Carolina scoring. An Edgar Bennett 4-yard touchdown run late in the third and one more Jacke kick in the fourth for good measure iced the game and propelled the Packers down to the Bayou.

A truly amazing moment and one any of us who were able to watch won't forget. Finally getting over the hump, at Lambeau Field no less, to get this storied franchise back to the Super Bowl.

The Present

If we think our team stinks right now, just imagine what the vibes must be like in Charlotte. After trading a ransom for the #1 overall pick Bryce Young, the Panthers have fell flat on their faces in 2023. It has to sting extra to see C.J. Stroud lighting it up, too. Young has certainly struggled in his rookie season. In fact, he hasn't hit 200 yards passing since October 29. Since then, the team has fired its coach Frank Reich, and shown to just be a poorly managed team stemming from their meddling owner David Tepper.

Make no mistake, this is a game the Packers should win and win handily. Carolina is about as inept offensively as you can get BUT... we've seen poor offenses find their stride against Joe Barry's unit. Defensively for Carolina, however, they boast one of the league's stingiest passing defenses. Jordan Love will need to be on his A-game to move the ball against them, and be better than he has the last two weeks.

The Future

Noon kick Lambeau time, Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC on Christmas Eve. The Packers enter the game 4.5 point favorites, and Vegas expects a snoozer with a 36.5 over under. I tend to agree - I think the Packers win, but I think this one is a little rough. I think the Packers offense struggles to pass a little but, but ultimately, I think they contain the Panthers passing game. But with Miles Sanders and Chuba Hubbard in the backfield, they could certainly run all over Green Bay and their pourous-to-put-it-nicely run defense.

The Packers aren't yet out of it, but now need some help. Winning Sunday will help keep the hope alive for another week, but it's certainly grim. As always, I can't wait to see how it all shakes out.

Barry needs to be gone. That is clear to everyone.

But things get a little murkier when you talk about position coaches, specifically on defense.

Should there be a clear-out of defensive running and passing coordinators and position coaches - and if so how deep will you cut into that group ?

I guess you have to decide how much is poor play down to Barry and his scheme - and just how much of the problem is the teaching ability of the coaches under him ?

If LaFleur is not confident assessing possible future coaches under him, then pass the responsibility on to Gute and his group of assessors.

Barry needs to be gone, but not replaced with yet another DC who has a passive philosophy and does not seem to motivate his players, like the last 3 Def. coordinators. Unfortunately, it seems MLF prefers a soft scheme on defense.

My brother and I drove to Green Bay from Connecticut in a Jeep Wrangler soft top for the Championship game against the Panthers in 1997. I believe it was well below zero at game time with the wind chill and we were bundled up like the Ice Bowl. Our 1st game at Lambeau after watching this team through the 70's and 80's. My brother is much older, so he was around for the 60's, lucky him. A bucket list experience on steroids, the whole town was non stop celebrations, Reggie White singing Amazing Grace on the Jumbotron, the fly over, Brett Favre doing what Brett Favre did, then Reggie going around with the Halas Trophy after the presentation letting the fans see it up close on the field - his 1st Championship at any level as well and he had tears coming down his frozen cheeks - OMG, I get emotional just remembering all that were affected by the joy that was brought to a little town in Wisconsin for one brief moment in time. Hadn't happened since 1967 and hasn't happened since - 1 Championship Win at Lambeau in a 56 year span and we were there for our 1st Packer Game ! One of the few times I have been at the right place at the right time in my life.

Very cool. I finally made the trek a few years ago from Texas to Lambeau, watched them shut out the Bills in Josh Allen's rookie year. It's a fantastic experience.

Great story. Where in Connecticut are you from? I'm originally from there. My buddy bought us NFCCG tickets as a return favor for me getting 96 WS 6th game tickets the year before. His dad went to ND and he knew how much of a crazy Packer fan I am. So we figured out last minute how to get there fast! Ended up flying to Chicago ,then to Appleton with a few drunk Panthers fans, before driving to Green Bay. First time I had been in Lambeau and most memorable time and sporting event in my life. Waiting so long to experience again what was the norm growing up and it was beyond worth it.

Plainfield - Northeast Corner. Long suffering Red Sox fan from the 70's and 80's as well - 75 World Series, Bucky F_______ Dent, Bill Buckner etc.. Yeah that 97 NFC Championship Game will never be topped in my lifetime - winning it at home was better than the Super Bowl. Red Sox in 2004 was pretty special but never saw any of the Series Games in person and they won it away. Favre is still my All Time Favorite Player on the field, never saw any sports professional love the sport he was playing as much as Brett Favre. Was like a kid in the Wonka Factory.

Bridgeport for me. Glad you got to experience the older Lambeau. What a year, what a team, what a Defense!

Imagine, we had two more championships and potential super bowl trips right there for the taking.
Kevin King denied us an NFC Championship & Super Bowl.
And the following year we got a peek into the horrible future under Matt LeFleur. A 49ers team with a bad offense led by Jimmy G, an easy win to be had..but no, the Mo Drayton led special teams kamikazied our super bowl aspirations. Even though the entire sports world told MLF to ditch Drayton… no MLF knew better.
Here we are again.

I agree 1000%, being a Red Sox fan in the 70's and 80's I saw tons of the heart breaking near misses with a stacked team. Most of it due to poor coaching and mis management up top. Cronyism can kill any business but is so prevalent in most businesses.

Thanks, Tim. Love reading the periscope to see what memory pops up.

I wish I had the confidence you did about Barry's future. I believe we all truly felt the same way at this time last season.

Just beat those stinky cat litter box fillers.

Christmas future on Sunday. Carolina runs way over 175 yards with Young extending drives with runs. The Packers DB's play off the receiver's and Young gets another 150 yards. Carolina scores 24 points and wins. Young gets offensive player of the week.

Oh, this just happened two weeks in a row. Third time is a charm. Barry gets fired because the Packers are out of the playoffs and the players have lost confidence.

Unfortunately this scenario is more likely than not.

Hire Jim Leonard and we will have an attacking and disciplined defense next year.

I tapped into MLF's mind and I got this on a loop.

"Everybody's talkin' at me
I don't hear a word they're sayin'
Only the echoes of my mind"

Merry Christmas to you, enjoy your posts. That song was very popular when I was coming home from Vietnam remember hearing it going through airports besides "In The Year 2525".

Everybody, including JB knows JB is a goner. Why the hell do you keep him there. To piss the players off? The man should have been let go during the bye week. I would venture that the great majority of the defensive players would get a morale boost if they fired him now. I cannot think of one good reason to keep him till the end of the year. What kind of effort do you think he's putting in on game planning, while he's making plans to sell the house and move? Sorry, MLF may be a really nice guy, but he's being a chicken shit by keeping Barry around till the end of the season....like he wants the scapegoat handy for future failures this season.

MLF says he's confounded. Well, Mikey, we are too.

Lafluer said he’s seen it work before. He wants to prove that over the last three games.

I've wondered if MLF wants 'soft' coordinators who are like him in temperament. Walk-through practices, minimal repetition, special treatment of veterans, no ass-chewing, etc. So that in contrast, MLF's style does not stand out to the players as being soft. Professional football players are tough, competitive people and respect toughness, drive and intelligence because they know that is what gets them wins. Really I don't know, but hiring Barry in the first place and keeping him last year has made absolutely no sense.
