Packers’ Most Likely NFL Honors Winners in 2023

Which Packers have the best chance at taking home individual awards this season?

Most Valuable Player - Jordan Love

Since it’s essentially a quarterback award, Love is the only player who really has a shot at taking home the MVP for the Packers in 2023.

Clearly, Love winning the MVP in his first year as Green Bay’s starter isn’t particularly likely even in a best-case scenario, but he still stands the best chance.

Aaron Jones could be a dark horse candidate for the award if Matt LaFleur lets him loose, but he would have to put up historic numbers to win the MVP from the running back position.

Assistant Coach of the Year - Joe Barry

Okay, now you’ve finished laughing, let me explain.

The offensive coordinator in Green Bay doesn’t call plays, so there’s only one choice here.

Barry has been an abject disappointment as the Packers defensive coordinator, which shouldn’t be a surprise given his track record. However, Green Bay’s defense has a lot of talent and if Barry could finally get the best out of his group, there’s a chance. Just don’t hold your breath.

Offensive Player of the Year - Aaron Jones

The theory here is that with a new, young quarterback under center, the Packers will lean more heavily on the running game, allowing Jones to have a career year.

Jones would have to contribute significantly in the passing game as well to win this award, which has favored wide receivers more and more in recent years, but he is well capable of doing so.

Another potential winner could be Christian Watson, who enjoyed a sensational back end of the 2022 season and looks primed to truly break out this year.

Defensive Player of the Year - Jaire Alexander

Everyone knows Alexander is one of the league’s top cornerbacks, but he’s never had a season which has grabbed national attention.

His five interceptions in 2022 was a career high, although his overall play didn’t quite match the previous two seasons. If Alexander can put together a true shutdown season and rack up some interceptions, he has a real opportunity to win DPOY.

Offensive Rookie of the Year - Luke Musgrave

Only one tight end has ever won OROY, Mike Ditka all the way back in 1961, highlighting the difficulty of a quick transition to the NFL level, but Musgrave stands out as Green Bay’s prime candidate in 2023.

While wide receiver and fellow second-rounder Jayden Reed plays a position which tends to make the leap from college to the NFL more seamlessly, he may not have the same opportunity to make an impact with Watson and Romeo Doubs ahead of him on the depth chart.

Tight end reps on the other hand are completely up for grabs, and Musgrave has the athleticism to make highlight reel plays downfield and in the end zone.

Defensive Rookie of the Year Award - Lukas Van Ness

Again, the buzzword is ‘opportunity’. With Rashan Gary’s status up in the air as he recovers from an ACL injury, first-round pick Van Ness will have every opportunity to see the field right away.

While he is young and incomplete, Van Ness isn’t as raw as Gary was entering the league, and he can cause problems for NFL offensive linemen from day one with his pure power.

Even once Gary returns, Van Ness is likely to get plenty of reps, rotating with Gary and Preston Smith.

Comeback Player of the Year Award - Rashan Gary

The only logical choice, Gary could earn recognition if he he comes back from injury near the start of the season and manages to pick up where he left off.

Gary was dominant at times in 2022 before seeing his season cut short and on course to achieve a new career-best sack total.

It’s no easy task for a player to return from an ACL tear and instantly play at the same level they did pre-injury, but if Gary can set a new career high in sacks in 2023, he will stake a claim for the award.

Gary is a great choice for Comeback Player. Second would be Stokes, I think.

Stokes is a good choice too TK... Not may people are talking about Stokes, mostly I'd imagine is because he didn't play especially well last season before he got injured. I think getting Stokes back and playing MUCH closer to his 2021 form opposed to his 2022 form is hugely important for this defense.

You can never have enough good Pass Rushers AND Cornerbacks. Stokes is much better at playing man. Get him healthy and lets see playing at that 2021 form!

Imagine if the Packers were to capture the division title with 10 or 11 wins--then MLF should get serious consideration for Coach of the Year in transforming such a young team into instant winners. I don't ever think he had much of a shot with AR under center, right or wrong as it may be.

Matt should have won it once, already, despite the argument he had Aaron Rodgers.

If it wasn't the slow time of the year before, it officially is now. Oof what a headline.

I don't think Barry is a laughable choice at all. First, last year's defense was nowhere near the Armageddon that haters say it was. It was ordinary, not awful. Second, the defense definitely seemed to be coming around toward the end if the year. If the Packers contend and the defense plays to potential then Barry is easily as likely as some of the other people on this list. Or do you really think that Jordan Love is likely to be MVP?

And for all the Bisaccia fans out there, yeah, he's a fine coach, but the Packers defense ranked higher last year than the special teams. And sorry, but you're not allowed to thump your chest as a great special teams unit when your get FOUR kicks blocked on the year. Is our rookie kicker going to be an instant all pro? Is our punter really better than average? There's more to special teams than Kiesean Nixon.
