Packers Have Crowded Wide Receiver Room

11 wide receivers will be competing in training camp for what's likely only five or six roster spots.

There are currently 11 wide receivers on the roster in Green Bay. On cutdown day last season, the Packers only kept five receivers on the initial 53-man roster. Those receivers were Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown, and Malik Taylor.

To start camp this year, the Packers will have third-round draft pick Amari Rodgers and last year’s free agent acquisition who opted out of the 2020 season, Devin Funchess, in addition to Chris Blair, Reggie Begelton, Juwann Winfree, and Bailey Gaither.

It seems likely Green Bay would also keep only five wide receivers in 2021, especially considering the depth of talent at tight end. That means it’s possible over half the receivers in the position room won’t be there when the season begins. Starting with Adams, here are the 11 receivers in order of their potential to secure a roster spot.

Davante Adams

Adams set some personal and franchise records in 2020. While he only played 14 games (really more like 13.5) Adams had 18 touchdowns and 115 receptions, surpassing Sterling Sharpe’s previous record (112). He finished the season with 1,374 receiving yards, averaged 98.1 yards per game, and posted a career-high 77.2% catch percentage. In addition to achieving career bests, Adams made his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl and his first ever first-team All-Pro. Of course, Adams is a roster lock and is simply on this list for inclusion’s sake.

Amari Rodgers

The Packers selected Rodgers in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, bundling a fourth round pick to move up and grab him at No. 85 overall. The Clemson receiver’s senior year was his best, posting 1,020 yards and seven touchdowns in 12 games. The 5-9, 212lb receiver brings a different dynamic to Green Bay’s offense, giving the Packers a more traditional option for the slot role. In addition to the impact he’ll have as a receiver, Rodgers will also audition at camp for the team’s return duties. At Clemson, Rodgers primarily returned punts though he does have kick return experience. He had 68 punt returns for 529 yards with one touchdown in 2018. The rookie sits just behind Adams as the position’s second roster lock.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling

Valdes-Scantling battled consistency issues to start the season before emerging as the offense’s clear WR2 in 2020. He had 690 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 33 receptions, averaging a league-leading 20.9 yards per catch. In the playoffs, Valdes-Scantling had a quiet outing against the Rams before exploding in the NFC Championship Game against the Buccaneers. He ended the day with 115 yards and one touchdown on four receptions. That’s good for a whopping 28.75 yards per reception. He played 76% of offensive snaps in 2020. It’s a safe bet that MVS not only makes the 53-man roster, but plays a significant role in the offense in 2021.

Allen Lazard

Lazard had a strong start to his 2020 campaign before he suffered a core injury that kept him out six full games. He finished the season with 33 receptions for 451 yards and three touchdowns. In Week 3 against the Saints, Lazard had six receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown. He’s a reliable option for quarterback Aaron Rodgers on third downs, too, as 23 of his receptions in 2020 moved the chains. Lazard was an exclusive rights free agent the Packers kept around, so his spot on the roster also feels safe.

Devin Funchess

This is where everything starts to get interesting. The Packers signed Funchess in free agency last season, but he opted out due to the pandemic, meaning he hasn’t played any meaningful snaps in a football game since 2019. That was also his lone season with the Colts, where he played in one game for Indianapolis before injuring his clavicle against the Chargers and missing the remainder of his season. So, truth be told, Funchess hasn’t played consecutive games since 2018 with the Panthers. Funchess has only started 16 games in one of his NFL seasons (2017), hauling in 63 receptions for 840 yards and eight touchdowns. Excluding his one game with the Colts, Funchess has never had a season catch percentage over 56.8%, so that could be cause for concern. He’s certainly a candidate for the fifth roster spot, but he lacks return experience and any familiarity with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, so he’s got an uphill climb in camp.

Equanimeous St. Brown

St. Brown has also dealt with injuries during the beginning of his career. He played in 12 games for the Packers in 2018 and showed flashes (21 receptions, 328 yards) before losing his 2019 season to an ankle injury. He returned to the active roster in 2020 but made only one start for the Packers. St. Brown has one career touchdown, coming in the snow at Lambeau Field against the Tennessee Titans. He’s a familiar face on offense and someone his quarterback has praised in training camp, but he hasn’t gotten many opportunities to see the field. If he does want to secure a roster spot, his best way to do that may be on special teams where he played 10% of snaps in 2020. He’s under contract for one more season, so the Packers could give him the fifth (or a sixth) roster spot to see what they have in him, or cut ties early and let him try to latch on somewhere else.

Malik Taylor

The Packers liked Taylor enough to give him the fifth receiver spot out of camp in 2020, a move that surprised many. He was active for 15 games last season, catching his first NFL touchdown Week 13 against the Eagles. While he had only five receptions on the season, he did have a large presence on special teams, playing 42% of snaps. With the selection of Rodgers in this year’s draft and the return of Funchess, it’s more difficult to see Taylor earning a roster spot this year unless he puts on an electrifying performance in training camp. As will be a trend with the bottom guys on the depth chart, his best shot at sticking on the 53 will likely come as a special teams contributor.

Bailey Gaither

The only reason Gaither is so high on this list is because of his special teams abilities. An undrafted rookie out of San Jose State (shoutout James Jones), Gaither brings a unique size to the receivers room. At 6-0, he’s the second shortest on the roster behind Rodgers, with the smallest frame at 188lbs. Gaither finished his collegiate career with 135 receptions for 2,227 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also has ample experience returning both kickoffs and punts for the Spartans. While Rodgers will likely get first crack at return duties, Gaither could also make an immediate impact for new special teams coordinator Maurice Drayton.

Reggie Begelton

Begelton spent the 2020 season on Green Bay’s practice squad. He was elevated to the active roster for one game, playing two snaps on offense and two snaps on special teams. He signed a reserve/future contract in January to continue playing for the Packers. He’s most known for his career in the Canadian Football League, where he played three seasons with the Calgary Stampeders and put up some impressive numbers. He tallied 149 receptions for 2,236 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2019 and became the fifth player in Stampeders franchise history to record at least 100 receptions in a season.

Juwann Winfree

Winfree joined the Packers practice squad in October of 2020. He was selected by the Broncos in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft where he played in three games before ending up on injured reserve. Green Bay activated him for two games during the season where he played eight offensive snaps and 21 special teams snaps. Winfree spent his freshman year of college at Maryland before transferring to Colorado. He finished his collegiate career with a combined 807 yards and six touchdowns.

Chris Blair

The Packers signed Blair to a reserve/future contract this past January. Blair played college football at Alcorn State and was the school’s leading receiver in 2018 (529 receiving yards, six touchdowns). In 2019, he ranked sixth in the nation with 21.2 yards per reception. He also led the team again with 931 yards and seven touchdowns, posting five 100-yard receiving games during that season.

Davante Adams. The rest are numbers.
Amari hasn’t played against a Pro defense. Nothing on him.
Marquez Jack Rabbit can’t catch consistently.
Allen Nothing special, ok number 3, pretty average. Slow.
Funchess Who? Meh.
Equanimous Catches ball - steps out of bounds. Afraid of contact. Meh.
Malik, Reggie, Bailey, Juwann, Chris. Whatever! I’m hopeful.

No consistent #2. That could be a problem for Rogers except he thinks Davante is the target on every throwing down. And I don’t blame him.

Huh.

A Crowded 'WR' room.

This by the title excludes the TE and RB position, regardless of them catch passes in the game.

Most QBs have their favorites. It's not too shabby to have a favorite who is #17 and still be able to make the offense go when the defense knows it's coming as often as it is.

In the playoffs, when playoff caliber defenses know it's coming, it often gets shut down. You must have a viable number two.

We threw for 348 yards and 3 TDS in our loss to Tampa Bay. Our #2 caught 4 for 120 yards and a TD.

But yeah, another WR is always the answer.

This is true, it was particularly painful in that 4th quarter. To me though the addition of a true slot should help with that problem by adding additional options.

A fat lot of good that did them in the 4th quarter of the NFC CG, when things really mattered.

But hey, that offense was dynamite vs Detroit.

Rebecca,
In all due respect I don't think you have watched ESB much. Go back and watch his rookie season with how physical he was blocking. I distinctly recall him almost taking one defenders head off of his body. Don't think you were fair!

During the regular season Adams had 149 targets, caught 115 for 1374 yards. If you gave MVS OR LAZARD 149 targets at their seasons catch rate and yards per catch Adams would have been the third best receiver on the team.

MVS would have had 1630 yards
Lazard would have had 1453 yards

In reviewing game film Rodgers had Lazard & MVS open frequently but chose to throw to Adams. Can’t complain about success but given the same opportunity MVS & Lazard would have been better.

That’s the design of the offense. Two guys on Adams, one guy on Lazard, one on MVS, and a deep safety. That’s five defenders. We also have a TE combo in Lewis and Tonyan that keeps a linebacker busy.

That leaves 5 defenders remaining against Jones and the offensive line. Those are good odds for us. The defense can move the deep safety up and take their chances that nobody gets open deep, if that’s how they want to play it.

Adams, Rodgers, MVS, Lazard, and ESB will be on the 55. With the PS also increased to 12 players I see Begelton and Gaither on it.

I do not see Funchess making the squad. He is slow for a WR. And moving him to TE (position he played at MI until moved to WR his SR year) would make no sense now as I expect the Packers to keep four in that stacked room: Tonyan, Lewis, Sternberger and Deguara.

If they keep 6 WRs then I guess Funchess would make it as his salary is cheap now. But I think they load up on RBs and OL on this year's roster, especially if Rodgers doesn't play for the Pack...which he seems determined not to do. The run game would help Love or Bortles...and open up the pass game.

When it comes to determining the final few roster spots between extra TE/FB or extra WR, the TE/FB room gets the nod. I think Daffney is penciled in to the final roster right now. Someone will need to knock him out in TC.

I had the same first 5. I'm especially curious about Funchess but rust may be an issue that he might not overcome in time. If so, he replaces ESB. - who I think is on the bubble - as well as Malik Taylor. Taylor for all his athleticism and elite testing numbers never really demonstrated it on-field - especially on special teams when I never saw him gain more than 5 yards on PRs and KRs or not be downed by the first tackler. Thus opening the door for Bailey Gaither - who should at least be a superior special-teamer to M.T. (and my surprise WR to make the 55). I also don't see Reggie Begelton making the jump up to the 5 spot as It seems that he was never favored by Rodgers - so the practice squad should be the best he can hope for again. So my prediction is:
1. Adams
2. Rodgers
3. M.V.S.
4. Lazard
5. Funchess
6. Gaither
Practice:
Taylor, Begelton, and/ E.S.B.(if not picked-up by another team)

I agree with the pecking order listed in the article. Well the top 4 anyways. After that, it really doesn't matter. The WR room may be crowded but not with talent. Just bodies.

This reads like the resume of a camp body who has little actual chance of making the team:
"So, truth be told, Funchess hasn’t played consecutive games since 2018 with the Panthers. Funchess has only started 16 games in one of his NFL seasons (2017), hauling in 63 receptions for 840 yards and eight touchdowns. Excluding his one game with the Colts, Funchess has never had a season catch percentage over 56.8%, so that could be cause for concern."

Trouble is that he slots in 5th in the pecking order. He's the guy that somebody who has a lesser resume has to knock off the final 53. A few months back I said if Funchess makes the roster, I'd consider it a failure of the front office. From where I sit on May 25, they look like they are headed for failure. Hopefully one of the pile behind him has more than I think.

Given his contract, most NFL teams seem to disagree with you. Even the Packers decided the chump change he was due was too much and cut his pay. He took the pay cut. Which seems to indicate both he and his agent feared another offer might not come. So the evidence suggests that your statement indicates a greater belief in him that he has in himself.

But yeah, go with that. It makes as much sense as the Beatles nonsense you were spouting the other day. And the idiocy that every time a guy runs a route but doesn't catch the pass, he's just a "decoy"

Adams,of course.
Lazard, because his excellent blocking helps the RBs., and he’s among the league’s leaders in yards/target.
MVS, because he’s a premium deep threat.
Rodgers, because he’s part of the future.

No other WR is going to get targeted more than once per game.

The Order Of Battle is about 35-40 plays to the RBs, 10 to Adams, 8 to the TE.. That leaves 10-15 plays/targets to split among Lazard, MVS, Rodgers

And if Love or Bortles, then more RB plays may be on the menu. SF essentially used Jimmy as hand off master in the 2019 NFCCG into the SB...and when Matt was OC at Tennessee, he almost ran the ball into the playoffs in 2018.

I slide MVS up to No.2 because he is a true deep threat for Lafleur's offense. But that may depend more on game planning. And how much they use three wide sets. Both him and Lazard seem to be interchangeable in Lafleur's scheme.

Is MVS over his consistency issues or not? That's always been his issue. On balance, 2020 shows he is not. But his most consistent stretch of football came down the stretch in 2020. His catch % by month last year was 47.1%, 41.2%, 58.8% and 66.7%. You can blast the first half of that into the sun. The 2nd half is not great but definitely helpful to the team.

If he can play all of 2021 like the guy that showed up in November on, I think he'll be that #2 that leaves Rodgers and Lazard battling for 3 and 4.

"The Order Of Battle is about 35-40 plays to the RBs, 10 to Adams, 8 to the TE.. That leaves 10-15 plays/targets to split among Lazard, MVS, Rodgers"

in 2020, the Packers threw the ball 526 times and ran it 443 times. That's 54.3/45.7 pass/run ratio. On the vast majority of the 54.3% pass plays, the pass catcher is not pre-determined. So there is no "order of battle" that is pre-determined. It just kinda works out a particular way.

It is the guy that gets open and found by the QB among the 3-5 guys running a route that gets the ball thrown his way. One of the reasons that Adams gets so many targets (10.6/game in 2020) is that the other guys don't get open and have not established trust with Rodgers as much as he has. If they did, Adams would be even more dangerous. He'd have more room. Giving Adams more room is a good thing for the Packers, even if it means he is targeted less frequently. Perhaps especially if he is targeted less frequently.

Certainly the Packers offense as a whole would be more dangerous if they had a 2nd WR that was actually good. More dangerous running and passing since it would keep defenses guessing to a greater degree. And they might have succeeded in the 4th Q of the NFC CG. And have another shiny Lombardi on the shelves.

So it is your belief that it’s just kind of random and not the product of a plan? That’s your point?

And that on the “vast majority “ of pass plays, there’s no real primary target? And that receivers don’t generally work in concert to clear areas or screen somebody open?

If that’s what you’re saying, then no, I don’t agree. These formations and patterns are designed. It’s not random and things don’t just magically work out.

It will be interesting to understand how a QB completes 70% of his passes to people who can’t get open. Must just be random luck.

You forgot to add an asterisk that there is at least a possibility either Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, or Noah Fant might even further create confusion in the WR room. Yes, I know Noah Fant is listed as a TE, but he is 4.5 secs in the 40-yard and could also affect the WR/TE roster. One of my favorite players in the past couple of drafts.

For what it is worth....The seven players who didn't participate for the Broncos in the OTA practice because they were either rehabbing injuries or sick: Bradley Chubb (ankle surgery), Mike Purcell (foot), Duke Dawson Jr. (ACL), Shelby Harris (minor skin procedure), Baron Browning Jr. (knee), Dalton Risner (COVID-19) and Patrick Morris (illness). Additionally, Safety Kyle Fuller chose not to attend the voluntary OTA.

Separately, Courtney Sutton is rehabbing from week 2 knee surgery from last year.

Could any of the above have any significance for not being in attendance with a potential trade to GB for Rodgers?

Great call and smart of you to have checked up on that. I think you are spot on with this.

That, to me, is a clear indicator GB and DEN are working out trade details involving multiple players.

Way too early for predictions.
- Someone will get injured
- At least one guy will out-perform expectations in preseason
- Someone will probably under-perform expectations (maybe due to nagging injury)
- They'll try to slip one guy through to practice squad that maybe out-performs someone

That being said, lol, Adams, Rodgers, Lazard, MVS, Funchess make the team. Taylor and ESB on practice squad.

Adams if the jewel of course, the rest are ok. St Brown has done nothing in three years. MVS has two highlight reels one where he makes a great catch and another when he flubs an easy pass right in his hands for what would have been a first down. Funchess was under impressive at Mich, another catch one drop one guy.

Really excited about Amari Rodgers! I think he can be a real X factor on offense. And if he can just be competent on special teams it will be a major improvement!

Adams
MVS
Lazard
Funches
Rodgers

Gaither
Winfrey
Practice Squad

Adams will get his contract redone, and I believe they will also try to resign MVS because he’s one of the best deep threats in the league. Lazard will continue to come cheap and he has value as a number three.
Funchess comes cheap I think they are intrigued by his skill set. Of course Amari Rodgers and he will be their main returner and Jets sweep guy. I really like Billy Gaither and I believe he will be on the practice squad along with Winfrey As emergency special teams guys.

They’ve done the smart thing here they’ve got Adams who are going to have to pay a boatload of money MVS who will get a raise but won’t get a gigantic contract Lazard and Funches come cheap and Rodgers isOn his rookie contract. This is a very diversified talented and economical group.

GG/This is all a bunch of BS negotiating banter,None of these things are going to happen, Rodgers will return eventually, Packers management does not want to be forever known as the ones who traded the MVP. Also they will show Adams the money and I do believe they will try to sign MVSat a reasonable price, He’s boom or bust but when he booms he Boom’s big! These guys are just banding together in solidarity supporting their quarterback that’s all.

nostradanus, I respectfully think you might not want to acknowledge this possibility:

Both GB and DEN held players out of OTA activities per possible inclusion in a pending Aaron Rodgers trade. I understand your saying this is BS, that he’s returning to play for the Packers.

C’mon man. You know Aaron Rodgers. Why would he change his mind?

Me? I’m not saying that I necessarily want this to happen, but, rather, that it sure looks like an AR trade is happening, and now, that it might include more players.

To be perfectly honest & frank, after looking at this with my eyes wide open, there’s a lot to like. You’re not the only person here who I consider a friend who is reluctant or unwilling to accept or acknowledge that AR is likely being traded, as we speak.

We can disagree. That’s no problem.

For weeks now, players I’ve wanted from DEN roster in a trade scenario all of a sudden weren’t practicing yesterday, along with our entire starting WR group. My guess is they don’t practice at all until sometime after that June 1st date when they can make a trade official while saving $ on the cap. I simply found it to be more than a coincidence.

DE Shelby Harris. NT Mike Purcell. DE Bradley Chubb. ILB Baron Browning.

DEN holds out their entire starting DL, and the Packers hold out their entire starting WR group, and it BS to make any connections there?

A new name that I had not considered is two time Pro Bowl CB Kyle Fuller. He was the 2018 INT leader in the NFL with 7 picks. The Broncos had recently signed him in FA, along with CB Ronald Darby. Wow. All of a sudden, in the Denver press, Vic Fangio:

“He wasn’t out there today. I really don’t know why," Fangio told inquisitive reporters. "It is voluntary, and he’s chosen not to attend at this point.”

Sound familiar???

Come on now GG/conspiracy theories, players not showing up for voluntary OTA’s? Rodgers is kicking it in Hawaii with his man bun and laughing at all of us dorks pissing ourselves over this nonsense.

The Packers have made their stance and I hope they stick to it, Aaron Rodgers is under contract for 3 years and has already received all of his guaranteed money.

He has two choices, show up or retire.

I’m betting he shows up.

I respect yours and others opinions on this but that’s the way I see it.

The WR's depend on who the QB will be in 2021. Too soon to know that now.

I can see why LaFleur likes Funchess. I think he will fit well in this offense. He also provides a second player able to do what Lazard does. We are much better with that type available.

Only negative with Funches is no special teams but hey, he’s a solid vet WR and really cheap. Great value signing.

The room is less crowded. The top five vets didn't show up for voluntary OTA's.

It was always to see that we have a pretty special group of WRs. At least top 10 even with the shortcomings. They had speed and size and very good route running. They where open a lot the last 3 years.
Adams is great of course but MVS and St. Brown may have even a highter ceiling and you could see that from the start. Both of them have the chance to becoming nr. 1s.
We had more weapons than we needed on the last 3 years and I never understand why some complained about it. Just one ball to go around and we have some TEs too and a great running game who can catch as well.
O Line is also one of the best and the D getting better. We have a chance to win no matter who is under center.
But in the long run this seems like perfekt for a great pick like Love.

This will be a very intriguing camp battle for sure. Unless the 6th WR is a major ST contributor I'm guessing GB rolls with 5 WR, 4 RBs, and 5 TEs (with one functioning more as a FB), but how much Amari operates out of the backfield could shift that to 6/3/5.

Also, always possible but probably unlikely given the number of players already on the roster fighting for spots, one of those spots could go to a player currently on another team roster.
