Packers DL Datone Jones Has Sprained Ankle

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed the injury on Friday.

In his typical day-after-game press conference on Friday, Green Bay Packers head coach MIke McCarthy publicly commented for the first time on the injury suffered Thursday night by defensive lineman Datone Jones in the win over the Minnesota Vikings:

Jones left the field under his own power during the second quarter with what appeared to be an injury to his right ankle and was ruled out of the game in the third quarter.

Last season, Jones also suffered a sprain to his right ankle, which seemed to affect his play for a majority of the season.

The Packers are arguably more banged up along the defensive line than any other position between Jones and Josh Boyd and B.J. Raji on injured reserve.

Boyd injured his knee during the game this past Sunday against the Chicago Bears and was placed on the team's inactive list for Thursday's game.

McCarthy later added that he was hopeful that Boyd would be able to return to action this upcoming Wednesday, the next time they practice after a mini-bye week of sorts.

The Packers play next at the Miami Dolphins on Oct. 12.

McCarthy said he was unsure when wide receiver Jarrett Boykin might return. Boykin is nursing a groin injury.

If these injuries keep mounting at DL I'm wondering who they'll bring in first... J.Jolly, R.Pickett, or some fairly unknown street free agent D-lineman?

Ryan Pickett signed with the Texans about 10 days ago. Earlier I thought they might bring Jolly back, but the more time goes by the more I doubt they'll pull the trigger. Boyd should be back soon. Not sure who they would sign off the street.

Just hope jones doesn't miss to much time. He has made strides in getting pressure on QB. Ankle injuries can be tuff.

Yeah - but even if he doesn't miss any time, he was a shell of his former self last year after that ankle sprain. I'm hoping that the injury isn't the dreaded "high" ankle sprain...

I'd rather see him stay out until he's fully recovered than return too soon at greatly diminished effectiveness for the remainder of the season.

We have a 10 day break and a very winnable game at Miami with or without Jones. Unless his ankle is 100% I hope they don't run him out there and it maybe becomes a lingering issue for the rest of the year. If we can't beat Miami without Jones then there are other problems besides Jones.

There's nothing and I meaaaaaan nothing on that offense that should worry Dom and the rest of the coaches.

The Dolphin's defense on the other hand -- smh, that damn Cameron Wake. We all know Bulaga isn't too good against speed rushers. I hope we chip and run towards him early and often. They have a pair of capable CBs as well.

Let Lacy run over his butt a few times, that will slow him down.

I'm assuming Neal and Peppers will fill in until Jones returns.

I'd like to see more of Neal AND Perry rushing from the inside on obvious passing downs. These dudes are strong.

Good point. As a true professional who has screwed up both ankles numerous times: if its a low sprain, he should be fine in 10 days of rest.
If its a ligament then he could be out a while. I had a casts on for a ligament for three months.
That was on the extreme side though.

My concern for him is ankle injuries are recurring and you never, ever get back to 100%.

WIsh him well.

"If its a ligament then he could be out a while."

A sprained ankle means you've stretched (or torn) the ligaments, regardless of whether it's high or low. That's what it means to sprain an ankle. As a true professional I'm sure you know that, though.

Nice try.
