Packers Continue to Cross Train Players at Different Positions

This week at OTAs, the Green Bay Packers continued their strategy of cross training their players at different positions. This is in coordination with GM Brian Gutekunst’s strategy of selecting players in the NFL draft year after year who possess the versatility and skill sets to play multiple positions. We have seen this on the offensive line with players like Zach Tom and Elgton Jenkins and in the secondary with players like Javon Bullard.

At OTAs this week, the team moved two players to different positions. To the surprise of nobody, this year’s first round draft pick, Jordan Morgan, got reps at guard this week at OTAs.

Head coach Matt LaFleur had indicated that Morgan would first be tried at tackle, which was his college position. Many scouts felt he would be better suited at guard in the NFL because he lacks ideal arm length for an NFL offensive tackle.

At rookie camp, Morgan played left tackle, which was his college position. Last week at OTAs, he lined up at both left tackle and right tackle.

On Wednesday of this week’s practices, Morgan was moved to left guard due in part to the absence of Elgton Jenkins who had informed the team in advance he would not be attending. The reps he received last week at right tackle were also in part due to the absence of starter Zach Tom who suffered a torn pectoral muscle and has missed OTAs.

In training camp, Morgan is expected to compete with Rasheed Walker to be the team’s starting left tackle. At least that’s where they want to try him first.

The Packers hope that Morgan will not have his transition from college to the pros stagnated by working at multiple positions. There is the primary adjustment from college to the pros. Then there is the possible move from tackle to guard, which requires changes in how a blocker uses his hands, feet, and other blocking techniques.

The other potential move would be from the left side to the right side, whether he plays at tackle or guard. Suddenly, everything would be like a mirror image of what he used to do in the past. Or as former Packers lineman Josh Sitton explained years ago when he compared changing sides to “trying to wipe your ass with the other hand.”

Cross training offensive linemen helps LaFleur, and the rest of the coaching staff put the best five players on the field as starters, but it requires players with enough versatility and intelligence to make the move.

The other Packers player who shifted positions at OTAs this week was defensive lineman Colby Wooden. Wooden played along the interior defensive line as a rookie last season although he played both inside and outside during his college career at Auburn.

As a rookie, Wooden recorded 17 total tackles and half a sack while playing in all 17 games. He did not start any games and played 23 percent of the team’s defensive snaps as part of the defensive line rotation.

This season, the Packers are switching to a four-man front under Jeff Hafley as compared to the three-man front they ran last year under Joe Barry.

The biggest reason for Wooden’s move to edge this week was the absence from OTAs this week of both starting defensive ends, Rashan Gary and Preston Smith. In addition, Lukas Van Ness is not practicing because he suffered a broken thumb. That leaves the team thin at edge rusher during practice.

Wooden described the move a “nothing out of the ordinary.” He added, “This week, we’re down a couple guys. I’ve played it [edge] before so it’s nothing out of the ordinary. I had to get back to different rules, obviously, but I like it.”

Wooden has put on about 15 pounds since the end of last season and now weighs about 293 pounds. “I definitely added some muscle, but I still look like me and I can play anywhere on the line.”

Whether this move is temporary or long-term remains to be seen. But either way, in a pinch, the coaching staff clearly feels Wooden can fill at edge rusher based on his skill set and experience in college.

Again, the Packers insistence on versatility is paying off for the team. We’ll see where Morgan and Wooden end up once the season starts. But if needed, they are preparing to fill in elsewhere if it will help the team.

I don't like the idea of removing Walker at LT, he played very well last year so until he either regresses or gets injured leave him be. Put Morgan inside or RT for now but time will tell where. I'm curious how the DB's shake down this training camp, I still believe King will thrive at the slot Corner and maybe even take over outside and move Stokes inside to play slot.

So, regardless if Morgan shows more than Walker, he should either usurp Rhyan or Tom, not Walker. Is that right?

Walker was playing at a top 10 LT level at the end of the year, if he continues that level of play he'll be the starter. Also the more they move Morgan around the better chance Walker has to keep his job.

Morgan also needs a lot of technique work before he's ready to handle the speed of some of the top pass rushers in the league.

If you take ML at his word, he says he will start the best 5. If Walker is one of the best 5 he will start, but probably only at LT. If it turns out Morgan, Jenks, Myers, Monk, Tom are the best 5, Walker will be the back up swing T, if you believe Matt.

I like the HC's idea.

I like and appreciate players who are versatile. I like and appreciate our GM finding those types of players. However, sometimes you can get too cute with this approach. Moving guys around is getting them pretty good in a couple different spots, but they might be moving them away from being great at one spot? I think cross training helps evaluate talent. But again, there can come a time when this approach can be mismanaged, depriving an athlete from becoming really good at one thing (especially a rookie) . It also takes a really good coach who teaches and evaluates talent at a high level to be playing Rubik's Cube with the players positions like this.

I guess what I am saying is, even though a player "can" play a couple different positions, doesn't mean they always should.

I think they are evaluating, trying to come up with their best 5. But, when the injuries hit, it's good to have the versatility.

They're just planning for injury, so if they lose a couple of interior guys or a couple of tackles, backups are ready and starters are ready to switch and keep the team in the game.

Cross-training is for your utility position lineman like Lucas Patrick. They need to plug a couple spots like center/guard. Draft tackles to play the spot and draft guards who know the Inside Game. Their bullshit musical
chairs left them with retreads pulled off the golf course during crunch time in the Playoff losses to T-Bay and Santa Clara.

Nothing wrong with taking a short look in OTAs to see what people can do...especially when you're short-handed at the top of the depth chart. Maybe you drafted or signed someone who you thought could be a good player at one position, but it turns out they're a really good player at another.

"Maybe you drafted or signed someone who you thought could be a good player at one position, but it turns out they're a really good player at another."

Excellent point Dobber. Look no further than Elgton Jenkins or Zach Tom both of whom played center in college but now play LG and RT respectively for the Packers. Morgan, Monk and Jennings are new to the Packer's coaching staff and need to be evaluated. Moving them around as part of the evaluation process is to be expected. What position or positions they finally play will be determined by how they play after an extended evaluation period (likely at least through TC).

Jack of all trades, master of none?

I want them to compete with each other and when they are in shorts it's ok to experiment, but line shuffling has got to end when they chose their best 5. That better happen early in camp. Then the backups can spell those 5 till they figure who's #s 6 through 10. The last few camps they haven't figured it out and it really showed when injuries happened. Took half the season and a healthy elite back to get them dialed in to where they should be at the start of this season.

They really haven't figured it out the last few camps? GB has had a good offensive line for some time now, and they have HAD to shuffle due to a number of injuries to starters. Of course it took time to get back on track when an All-Pro goes down in game one and they have to get a 7th rounder up to speed at LT, along with a first year QB, rookies and second year guys at TE and WR.

They are preparing for injury; figuring out who can fill in when they get short at a position b/c of multiple injuries at the same position.

The way this coaching staff had them playing by the second half of the season proves to me they know what they are doing.

They really haven't had an O-line and their backups figured out in camp. The injury proved their unpreparedness. Please don't make me bring up Newman and names no longer on the team. They had Nijman and decided to experiment while Walker got dialed in? Platooning is fun in other levels and sports, but it's not your best 5 and their backups figured out. If they knew they were going to move on from those guys, they should have got the best out of them while they had them.

I think we should draft one of the best LTs in the draft with #25, and then convert him to a RG.

Morgan will be our starting LT this year.

People get pretty overwrought in May.

If Morgan isn't the starting left tackle, that means he got outplayed by Walker. It's a win regardless, and whomever loses becomes the swing tackle. Walker appeared to be a professional left tackle last year when the dust settled. If Jenkins is healthy and with Tom's jack-of-all-trades ability, the Packers have 4 potential starting left tackles (which is nice).

I'm fine with Morgan being the 6th man this year while he works on his footwork and hand placement. My main concern is giving Rhyan more competition at RG because Telfort isn't that guy and I don't want to see them give Newman $3.4 million to be horrible again. I was hoping they were giving Jennings a long look at RG but it doesn't sound like it so far.

Best chance for Morgan to see the field might be his readiness for more than one position if/when a starter has to go out. Where he ends up over his career is a different question and there's no hurry in figuring that out. Time will tell.

There was quite a few scouts that thought Morgan would end up at G but moving from LT to RG as a rookie might be too much to ask. If he looks good at LG would they think about moving Jenkins?

LaFleur gave Walker props yesterday for how he handled the Packers using a 1st round pick on a T and said he's "totally locked in" so far. If he has put in the work this off-season he's starting at LT.

Also interesting to note that Donovan Jennings was working at LG with the #2 line this week with Telfort working at RG. Not the best look IMO because that gives Newman a leg up on making the team unless they give Monk a long look at RG at MC/TC.

Sounds like the only guys not getting shuffled around are Walker and Myers. Dillard is mainly playing RT but getting some looks on the left side.

If Walker plays at the level he was in the second half of last season and Morgan is less ready or about the same but is an upgrade at G, how is an OL with both playing not a win?

With Tom out, we’ve seen Jenkins at C, though not in the open to media this week because Jenkins was absent. It seems clear to me that they are looking at options at G. That’s logical as it’s the least certain position (as to the second G or if Jenkins were hurt).

Some of this will be looking towards in game options if there’s an injury. Both Myers and Monk seem to be largely focused on C, Walker and Morgan will compete at LT through into August, but it’s clear that Morgan will be given a run at both guard spots.

At this point veterans still have a leg up, so guys like Jennings or Monk may yet become factors, but for now it seems like the team is seeing how in Rhyan, Morgan, and Jenkins best fit with Walker, Myers and Tom and who the best 5 are and where they would line up ideally and if one went down.

The wild card is, with Tom being out, we do not know if he’s being considered as a movable piece and, if he is, if Walker or Morgan will get looked at at RT. We likely need to wait for camp to see.

On the seconds, Caleb Jones is consistently at LT this far and Tenuta at right. Are either there in order to allow focus and still options for game day? The seconds seem to be more stable, allowing positional focus. It seems like they are looking at Telfort as a G too. Is that a serious look or simply trying to find a role he can provide depth at?

It’s also interesting that Glover has yet to get opportunities with the seconds at T or G. As a 6th rounder that could mean they just want him focused on technical improvement at this point. I’d expect him to be worked into the mix at some point later in the summer if so.

The summer is time to experiment. I’m glad that they are. I really don’t care who plays at LT or elsewhere in the end provided they earn it on merit and we end up with the best combination of talent out there. The win is not having player A on the field at a particular position, but the best OL overall for the team this year. Not being open to permutations in summer is the best way to lose.

If that means no Myers or Rhyan starting to start the season or that Morgan is a G, why would anyone care if that’s down to merit? Too much personalization is a trap. Whether one likes a player shouldn’t matter as a coach or fan if others play better at the position or as a combination.

I was just pointing out that the players getting RG snaps besides Rhyan are Newman and Telfort or basically the weakest backups at the weakest link. I was hoping at least Jennings was getting some play there if not Morgan. Or maybe they've talked to Jenkins and he's ok playing RG.

3 down linemen under Barry? They played 2 down 99% of the time, even in 3rd and short situations. I like the fact they try guys at different positions to see if they have the ability. Jenkins really helped out a couple of years ago when he played LG, C, AND LT in the same season. Injuries will happen and they have to be prepared.
