Packers Claim Linebacker Grigbsy off Waivers
By jasonperone
With a thinning linebacker group, the Packers put in a waiver claim for Nicholas Grigsby, most recently of the Baltimore Ravens.
Recapping today's roster moves:
Claimed off waivers: ILB Nicholas Grigsby (23 career NFL games with the Lions, Patriots and Rams).
Signed: OLB James Folston (rookie), CB Jocquez Kalili (rookie).
Waived: S Josh Jones (non-football illness). https://t.co/BzIzOtg90q

At least Gute is willing to try guys out, not just rehash the same guys al la Carl Bradford.

This guy looks like a possible cover backer type. Undersized LB who has played on special teams during his NFL career on teams focused on more traditional ILB play.
He is athletic and was a hybrid cover backer in college.
I would not be shocked to see him lining up at ILB 2 on Thursday.
Looks like Bolton is out of his cast and signs point to better news. In the meantime Grigsby may have some work to do.

Can't tell if these are camp bodies or if we are desperate........

Scouting board prospects that become available as well as bodies for Thursday. Grigsby may be a little more perhaps, if I am in the right track with my earlier post.

You get 25 defensive guys plus 4more on the PS and the season starts in 10 days.
So there’s room for these people. I mean, in a week we have to be down to our best 29 defenders but we can take a look on the cheap for a couple of days.
Predicted Opening Day Roster, Defense.
Clark, Lowry, Adams, Lancaster, Keke. Fadol on 53.
Martinez, Smith, Smith, Fackrell, Gary, Bolton, Crawford.
That’s 12. Secondary has 9 active on gameday
Amos, Savage, Greene, Alexander, King, Williams, Jackson, Brown, and probably Campbell. That’s 9.

I know some are surprised at your listing 9 DB on the active roster OS. But that is the reality of the NFL these days. Sub out one ILB slot with Hybrid/DL player and one WR slot for ST/WR and one OL slot with OL swing players that gives three open slots (I think). Two DB and maybe one cover LB. Question is will the Packers clear extra gameday slots for more DB, or put more on the PS, with the extra exposure to injury, that comes with the contact at or closer to the LOS play that is now required with the phasing out of the ILB positions.

Actually, I like it when Gutie churns the roster and keeps looking. I realize that it can be tricky if we pass on a player who needs time to develop. Yet it’s better than the wait and hope that is sometimes is the hallmark of draft and develop.

Fodder for the Chief’s game on Thursday. After that who knows. One of the LBs might stick.

Just a thought Clay would have taken 5 million a year or a little less , he would look good inside right now . Even after Rams made offer to him his agent said they would take the same from GB and GB said bye. Nice interview on NFL . Com.

If he was willing to play ILB I think he should have been kept.

Lot of money to pay to keep a guy who would be behind Martinez and was never that good in coverage. Right or wrong, that’s what the Burks/Bolton role was focused on. I think the Matthews idea sounds better at first pass than it really is.

Seemingly filling a lot of real gaps with vagabond JAG lights. This is an 8-8 with Rodgers healthy and 2-14 if he's out for 16. Heaven forbid.

I'd love 8-8 after last year's dismal season...but I'm much more interested in seeing a team that is still in the game in the fourth quarter with a chance to win it. I'm hoping for a competitive team that doesn't get blown out in the first half!
