Packers Can't Be Serious About Pagano, Caldwell

Why the Packers hopefully aren't serious about Jim Caldwell or Chuck Pagano.

Before you fire a head coach, you better be darn sure you have a replacement in mind and after who the Green Bay Packers interviewed for their opening at head coach, you have to wonder if this team has any plan at all?

If I am being honest, my problem isn't really with the interview of Caldwell. My first thought was the Rooney Rule and even though he doesn't seem like a serious contender, he does have experience working with great quarterbacks and maybe he could be part of the staff down the road. I don't see him as a serious candidate though.

Maybe the idea was similar to Pagano. However, reports say that he was being interviewed for the head coaching job, which to me, is just ridiculous. If the Packers were going to hire Pagano, why not just keep Pettine and make him head coach?

Yes, Pagano has taken teams to the playoffs and the AFC title game but he also had Andrew Luck. Pettine was stuck coaching in Cleveland, so it's hard to compare their resumes but I don't see a big difference between them.

Either would be a mistake because neither is as good a coach as Mike McCarthy. Caldwell isn't either, which is why I hope he's not a contender either.

I get that the Packers felt the need to make a change, but for goodness sakes, they better start finding some better candidates. Of course, some guys like Vic Fangio and Josh McDaniels aren't going to be available for interviews until later on. I also don't see anyone in college making sense, so the options right now are limited.

Both McDaniels and Fangio are at the top of my wish list. But who knows who else could ultimately become available. All I know is that if Pagano is a real option, then this search is already off the rails.

This job is an elite job. Not only is Aaron Rodgers the quarterback, but the organization has tremendous resources, an incredibly loyal fanbase and leadership that understands what it takes to win.

Green Bay shouldn't have a hard time finding candidates but it also shouldn't be wasting its time with guys like Pagano and Caldwell. The Packers need a dynamic new head coach and unfortunately, neither of those guys comes close to fitting the bill.

Interesting that you list McDaniels as one of the top candidates. Take the name off the resumes and just compare Caldwell and McD and on paper Caldwell looks better. SB as a HC, only HC in Detroit with a plus winning percentage in 20 yrs. Great track record with QB's (Flacco, Manning, Stafford)

McDaniels - ton of success as a OC with the best HC in modern football. Disaster as a HC in Denver.

Agree. Caldwell no doubt is a legit candidate. Also he's the perfect guy to reign in Rodgers to be honest. Rodgers would never ever badmouth or defy Caldwell like he did McCarthy. That in itself might be worth the hire.

I agree Dash 100%. Caldwell is underrated and got a raw deal in Detroit. Look at how many games he won with a crappy squad in 4 years [3 winning season, 2 playoff appearances] and then compare them to Wayne Fontes and Jim Schwartz. He did far better than both and got half the credit and fired much sooner than those two. He went 11-5, 7-9, 9-7,9-7 with Detroit's squad. Bet he's looking much better to their fans than Matt Patricia, lol. His record in Indy was 14-2, 10-6, 2-14,11-5. And he took them to the SB in his first year. The 2-14 came with Peyton Manning missing the entire season. The man can flat out coach and to say he's not as good as McCarthy is a crock of crap.

I'm not saying Caldwell should be the choice but he is a very good coach who should at the very least be interviewed and considered. I'm very adamant about not wanting to hire a college coach though as other than Jimmy Johnson I can't think of a single one who came into the NFL and made an impact, although I can think of dozens who've tried and failed. Anyone remember Dan Devine?

Lol, if we were beyond that, the Rooney rule would never have been implemented. So people really think that racism does not exist, lmao. Let's be clear the Rooney rule was implemented by white owners who recognized black candidates that were qualified, and were not only being bypassed for HC jobs, they couldn't even get fucking interviews for the Jobs much less the Jobs itself. The Rooney rule doesn't force anyone to hire a black coach, only interview them so they have a fair chance. And people are mad because minorities have to be considered? But that's not racist? Upset that someone other than a white man is given a fair opportunity? The writer of this article already dismissed Caldwell in favor of McDaniels and Fangio. Two coaches who couldn't hold Caldwell's jockstrap when comparing resumes, but yeah, were past that, lol.

A name that came up while I was surfing the web on possible coaches was Don Martindale from the Ravens. He has been there a long time and the Ravens have always had a top ranked defense. Would probably have to have a good OC if they hired a DC for HC but this is the first I ever saw his name mentioned. Matt LeFluer and Eric Bieniemy are other under the radar names that were mentioned. It's just the beginning of the interviews and exciting to follow the whole process. I am anxious to see which coaches are even willing to coach in Green Bay. I'm sure that the FO knows what they want in a coach and probably already have it narrowed down to just a few candidates who fit their profile. But hell, what do I know. I just watch the game :-) And I will always be a Packer fan, no matter what!!

To me, that seems more out and going than up and coming. Are you sure driving drunk while nude is a crime in Michigan?

While we're searching for the next Sean McVay, I think it's important to note he and the Rams haven't won anything yet, and they're still seeking a December win. Doug Peterson, last year's offensive genius has struggled this year. Andy Reid will most likely forget how a play/game clock works in their first playoff game. Saint Chuckie returned to Oakland to fall flat on his scowling little mug. NFL great Michael Vick's circuitous route to Canton continues, and the Vikings defensive dynasty fizzled. It's a wacky league.

Why not bring in outsiders with insider credentials? Mark Tauscher at the helm with Leroy Butler as special assistant in charge of being Leroy Butler. I can see the headlines now: "Packers Go Rogue." And, of course, Joe Lombardi as something because of his last name. He has to be good, right?

A few names of possibilities would include Todd Monken (TB- currently 3rd ranked offense in NFL) , Zac Tayler (Rams assistant-currently 2nd ranked offense), Josh McDaniels (NE- 5th ranked offense).

One other name that intrigues me is Dave Toub- ST Coordinator for KC, Has been around a while and always had successful STs. Hiring someone like Toub would address one of the Packers biggest needs, allow them to retain Pettine and allow him to hire one of the other young assistants as OC.

I think Caldwell is a legit candidate even if most don’t, Pagono isn’t really what I’m looking for though, he ought to get a medal for making Eric Walden into a pro bowler, but not a head coaching job. I never once thought in my head, “damn we play a tough colts defense this week”. I have thought in my head, “ crap, Stafford could rip us apart in the dome this week”. Although that might be more on Capers. .

Pettine has gone on record as saying he has no desire to be a head coach again. More than once. Why do people keep mentioning him?

Lets not forget that McCarthy was the OC of one of the worst offenses in football before we hired him.

People keep saying "Oh...but they were fired from their last HC job..." So was Belichick.

I actually like Caldwell. I thought he got a raw deal in Detroit. He took a shit roster and had 3 winning seasons out of 4 with two playoff appearances.

Here's to the Bears hopefully going one-and-done in the Playoffs, so that the Packers can just hire Vic Fangio already. Defense wins championships, and the Packers could certainly use a defensive-minded HC for a change. If Pettine stays in the booth as DC, that's fine, but to have a defensive guru like Fangio be able to stay in direct and constant communication with this young defense from the sidelines would be a huge lift. The Pagano and Caldwell interviews are probably just for the benefit of having a fallback plan should the candidate the Packers really want end up taking a job elsewhere, but I have feeling the Packers have had their eye on Fangio from the beginning.

Josh McDaniels can’t even be trusted. Remove his name from all conversations unless it’s to say he is the new Patriots coach. So I don’t know who should be the head coach. Pettine is certainly good enough to coach the defense. He should get an interview for the head coaching job if he wants it, and also if he can’t handle being passed over, but retained to be the defensive coordinator. How crazy would it be if Mike McCarthy wanted to be the offensive coordinator? It’s a lot less crazy than people talking Favre, McDaniels, and Philbin. Really hoping this yard sale is thorough.

I think most fans can do a little internet research, read some articles and form an opinion on who may be viable coaching candidates.

The one thing none of us have any insider knowledge of is how any candidate may be organizationally and handling players. IMO, that's the main job of the HC, not so much the minutia of running the offense or defense but hiring the right assistants, coordinators & training staff and the million little details that go into running the team.

So agree!

Furthermore, there was a poster further up wanting a younger coach with a modern offense.

Give me an experienced coach anytime who has leadership skills and demands respect. It is relatively easy to change an offense with everything that is now available on film. It is also easy to hire an OC and QB coach to implement a newer or different offense.

I want leadership skills and a coach who knows how to adjust his offense and defense year to year and game to game to take advantage of his team's player strengths and his opponents weaknesses. Even at half-time of games.

I also want Rodgers to be able to change plays whenever he wants based on what the defense is doing on any given play. Makes absolutely no sense to run a set play if at line scrimmage defense is set-up to stop the play from being successful. This doesn't mean the head coach should not hold Rodgers accountable. Meetings on plays during week running up to game, but in particular a post game evaluation of each of the calls Rodgers made where he changed plays at line of scrimmage.

Excited about all the changes including of TT and MM being gone. Think the future is bright for Packers including 2019 season.

In 2018, Rodgers will earn a base salary of $1,100,000, a signing bonus of $57,500,000, a roster bonus of $7,800,000 and a workout bonus of $500,000, while carrying a cap hit of $20,900,000 and a dead cap value of $80,300,000.

Don't know that anyone (even the hooded one) can hold those numbers accountable, and that is all on the same front office in charge of changing the future. I wonder if the discord with 12 and MM didn't trace back to accountability or lack thereof during play early last year when called out in their chats. Truth is only two men likely really know and one of them probably recollect the events much differently than the other.

If MM couldn't hold the respect of 20% of the payroll. I'm curious who would as a first time coach or a returning wannabe.

You quote dollars like it matters when it comes to accountability.

Dont care what Rodgers makes if he is making bad adjustments with play calls than you either remove his ability to change calls at LOS, or you work with him to improve defense recognition vs correct play, which I am sure isnt a problem for Rodgers. The good thing is plays called from sidelines and plays changed at LOS can be measured for success rate. That is all that is needed for players, coaches, and for the FO.

Part of this is getting a feel for (1) who is out there AND (2) is also interested in coaching the Packers. Another benefit is helping define who doesn’t want to come to Green Bay.

Interviewing and hiring are two different things. Caldwell seems too low key to bring the necessary leadership to this team. But, he had the players’ respect in Detroit and Indy. McCarthy was low key, like Caldwell, and that translated onto the field in a negative way. There seemed to be no “killer instinct.” What I’ve seen the past 2-3 seasons is a decreasing level of intensity/urgency. I don’t think Caldwell is the one to bring that to Green Bay.

Regarding Pettine. I think Pettine is the person with integrity. When you ask that kind of person a question, he will answer you with respect exactly what he realy thinks and feels, or he will not answer at all. When reporters asking him same question, he understands their job and politely gave them same answer again and again.

If his employer would ask him that question his answer will be the same - "I'm not interested in HC position any more". If employer would continue asking him same questions he will resign and leave that employer. Why? Because that employer do not respect him...

So, people, why do you disrespect Mike Pettine. For me he looks like excelent expert and nice guy. And I respect him.

But you do not! Especially you, Chris, who compares him with that clown Josh McDaniels!

Many young people don't know this but Trump was actually GM/owner of the New Jersey Generals of the USFL in the early 80's. Many people here who probably hate him for no reason would probably love him if he was running the show here. Trump was a man of action. deals, trades etc which is what many people here crave and why they hated Ted Thompson who was the opposite of Trump. He went out and tried to get the best players for his team. Doug Flutie, Herschel Walker, Maurice Carthon for example were major scores for Trump. Jersey Al probably went to a few of those games.

Honestly, if Trump were running the show in Green Bay I almost bet he would have traded Rodgers to the highest bidder probably two years ago. We'd be sitting with an absolute boat load of high draft picks which Trump would have turned into gold on his way of 3 to 5 super bowls similar to Dallas of the 90's. Oh, it's fun to dream but glad he is where he is. He's right where God wants him to be. Now having said all that Bo, please keep politics to a minimum.

Thank you,

Dash

Typically they have installed and running head coaches offense. Typically they have an All Pro caliber QB with the necessary horses on offense.

To me reputation around league, interview and look for leadership qualities, as well as organizational skills.

Ugh. I think Caldwell is actually a pretty good coach. When I think of him however, I see him in the sideline with a bewildered look on his face from his time in Indy and Detroit... very McCarthyesque. "That's a no from me, dawg".

I listened to a Podcast yesterday morning and the gentleman who runs the Podcast made an interesting point which was nothing bad can come of the Packers interviewing Caldwell and Pagano....NOTHING....

Both were NFL HC, Caldwell with Peyton Manning. IMO they could still offer ideas what they'd change on the roster or how'd they'd make the Packers a better team that either Gute or Murphy may not have thought of. Maybe one of them said something that really stuck with the 2 men responsible for making the most important decision the Packers organization will make over the next 5 years.

I don't want to see either hired by the Packers but this isn't a big deal at all.

Good point which I and perhaps a few others overlooked.

Packers are limited by league rules as to who they can interview at this point of the season. I see nothing wrong in their conducting interviews even if for no other reason than Gute & Murphy might need the "practice" for other interviews ahead, lol. Interesting times ahead for sure!

Was thinking about folks connected to Mark Murphy and Russ Grimm crossed my mind. Not pushing him or against him .......was just trying to think of his old Redskin connections.
