Packers at Vikings: Gameday Preview - 2022 Week 1

It. Is. Time. Gameday is finally here and the Packers face a familiar foe... and another familiar face.

WHEN THE VIKINGS HAVE THE BALL

Historically speaking, the Vikings have had success running the ball on the Packers

Dalvin Cook is a two-way threat that has given the Green Bay defense fits and Alexander Mattison is very good complementary runner. The Vikings will certainly look to pound the ball, but the Packers have the best front 7 they've had in a long time. The additions of Jarran Reed and Quay Walker should allow them to neutralize the run.

Vikings center Garrett Bradbury has a notoriously difficult time with big power rushers in the trenches. Kenny Clark should have a field day in the middle and Reed should keep double teams off of him. We may also see more TJ Slaton as the Packers try to use their size advantage to hold blockers so De'Vondre Campbell and Walker can make plays against the run. Their speed should be critical in heading off Vikings runs before they get too far.

With or without a successful run game, the Vikings will look to pass.

New head coach Kevin O'Connell makes his debut today after serving as the Rams offensive coordinator. Unlike the last Vikings coach, he knows how passing attacks are supposed to work and he has some talented players to run it with.

If Kirk Cousins is ever going to hit the next level, new coach Kevin O'Connell will be the person to get him there. Just look at what he did with Matt Stafford last year.

The Vikings have a similar level of wide receiver talent as the Rams, too.

Justin Jefferson is already establishing himself as an upper echelon receiver and, even if Adam Thielen is slowing down in his old age, is part of one of the better receiving duos in the league. Throw in KJ Obsorn and newly-acquired under-achieving wildcard Jalen Reagor, and they have easily the best receiving corps in the division. The Packers secondary, who have not really played together, could struggle going up against a new offensive system with no game film.

The Packers have an all-star secondary, but the new Vikings offense qualifies as an unfamiliar opponent.

WHEN THE PACKERS HAVE THE BALL

The Packers re-shuffled offensive line (featuring two All Pro caliber starters fresh off ACL rehab and listed as questionable for the game), hasn't taken so much as a preseason snap together. They could make or break this game.

If they can't hold the point against Danielle Hunter and Za'Darius Smith (who sounds out for blood on social media), things could go south in a hurry.

After Davante Adams and MVS left in free agency, Aaron Rodgers has few familiar targets left. Watkins, Watson, and Doubs are some talented additions, but Rodgers has never taken so much as a preseason snap with either of them. With Allen Lazard doubtful, I would expect the quarterback to look for Randall Cobb and Robert Tonyan when things break down (which is almost guaranteed to happen at times in Week 1 with an unfamiliar line).

Tonyan could be especially valuable in the red zone, given how much Rodgers used to look to Adams. Aaron Jones will also probably see a fair number of dump-offs to slow the pass rush and take advantage of his passing skills.

Sammy Watkins could be a wild card if the positive comments out of training camp are true. He may get injured a lot, but he's healthy for Sunday and that bodes well for the Packers on fast turf.

Patrick Peterson and Harrison Smith are past their primes, for sure, but they're still savvy vets. The Packers can use quick passes to let their receivers beat these old-timers with athleticism.

OTHER NOTES

  • The Packers Keisean Nixon and Rudy Ford are supposed to be big boosts to a special teams unit making it's debut under Rich Bisaccia - it's "show me" time
  • Jalen Raegor was a bust as a wide receiver, but he could tilt this game as a returner
  • Kevin O'Connell had to scheme for the Packers twice in the 2021 calendar year as the Ram offensive coordinator - he understands their defense
  • No NFL stadium kills more birds than the Vikings US Bank monstrosity

FINAL THOUGHTS

The first week of the NFL has become increasingly random. No one plays in the preseason, so September games are a crapshoot.

The Packers will have no offensive line cohesion, regardless of who plays. Their passing offense is full of unfamiliar players and features a quarterback who thrives on familiarity. And the special teams unit, despite heavy investment in the offseason, was a small dumpster fire in preseason (granted that's still an upgrade from last season).

Add in a new Vikings coach with a point to prove, a jilted ex-teammate who wants to rub it in, and the fact that the Vikings are playing in their Super Bowl this week, and things look iffy.

I have no doubt that a healthy Packers team will prove far better by the end of the year, but the early going could be rough as the team finds itself.

Packers 17, Vikings 20

"The Packers have an all-star secondary, but the new Vikings offense qualifies as an unfamiliar opponent."

AND

"Kevin O'Connell had to scheme for the Packers twice in the 2021 calendar year as the Ram offensive coordinator - he understands their defense."

They may be a TAD bit unfamiliar but the Viking's offense isn't going to be much different than the Rams or even the Packer's offense. The Packer's defense KNOWS Cook, Jefferson, and Thielen. There may be a surprise or two but not enough to call them unfamilar IMO...

As far as O'Connell having schemed the Packer's Defense twice last year who cares. O'Connell AND McVay had their asses handed to them...TWICE in 2021, not to mention by a Coordinator whom O'Connell and McVay both knew WELL.

Oh yeah, AND O'Connell and his boss had their ass handed to them by a defense without Jaire Alexander, Jarron Reed, and an ILB who's as fast as most of the Viking's skill position players.

And with Bahk, Jenkins and Lazard not available it’s going to be tough sledding. I just hope that we don’t get blown out!

It will be tough. However, I don’t understand why the coaches prefer Hanson over Tom. Tom is clearly better and should be our RT for this game.

I don’t either. Maybe it won’t shape out that way come game time? The only reason they keep Hanson is because they see him as a Patrick wannabe. I heard that a backup center is always a lock.

Let me take a stab at this.

The coaches know Hanson because he didn't just get off the bus a couple of weeks ago. He was here last year, on the practice field, in the meetings, in the weight room, etc. Although they've studied all Tom's film and worked with him for weeks, at this point, it would be natural for the coaches to feel more comfortable with the guy that's been here.

Or, perhaps in their opinion, Tom ISN'T clearly better.

Or, perhaps in their opinion, the right side of Newman and Hanson is better than Tom and Newman.

If I were the guy who was making the call on this, I'd start Newman at RT with Hanson at RG. I'd also take a look at Tom at RT and Newman at RG. That way , I don't have to start the rookie, on the road, in his first game as a pro. I can put him in for a series or two after we're up 14-3 and he's had a chance to catch the tempo of the game.

We're going to need Tom. We're going to need Hanson. The season hasn't even started and we're down 2 offensive linemen already.

Bak, Jenkins and Lazard definitely out against Vikings, will be interesting to so the Oline and how they operate. Getting to look more and more time getting closer let Bak go. Seems likely he may not play another down for the Packers. Hope totally wrong. Should be interesting game today although obviously first games are always a crap shoot!

I haven't seen anything that says they will definitely be out. Looking doubtful yes, definitely, nope.

It sure doesn't look good, I was really hoping for at least one of them. Hanson just SUCKS. He just CAN'T be an option at this time IMO.

WTF kinda talk is that? Packers losing to the vikings??? We are going to beat these clowns to a pulp. Our D Line and Pass Rush will be in Cousins face, all game long. Pressure Cousins, and our secondary should have a field day, with INTs and pass break ups. I look for Kenny Clark to be double teamed, most plays, but that leaves Jarren Reed, Rashan Gary, Dean Lowry, TJ Slaton and maybe D Wyatt and our LBs to get after Cousins and Cook, in their backfield. The porous viking OL will lose the battle of the LOS, today, and we will beat the vikings' sorry asses 25-13. The odd score from the Packers accounts for 3 TDs, 3 PATs and 2 Safeties. Kick these posers to the curb, define their season and GO PACK, GO!!!

I love your spirit! Yet I still can worry. It’s in my nature. Having both tackles out and no clear #1WR doesn’t help. GPG!

Bruce, Bruce, Bruce....!

My only hope is that the reason why you have the Packers losing is that you are superstitious, and that you have historically always guessed the wrong winner. Sorta like a double bluff.

With D-Bak and EJ out, it will be tough definitely. But why is Hanson on our starting O-Line? Newman belongs at Guard, and Tom is clearly better at RT.

The first game of the season is always the one where the most stuff goes wrong. Little things, like having 11 guys on the field, blocking, and tackling are bigger question marks in the opener than in any of the games after that. Sometimes, you just can't know until you actually see it.

I always believe in keeping it simple in the opener. Offense, keep the ball in the hands of the people who are least likely to screw up. On defense, keep your safeties back, play man to man, rush four. Look at the game between Buffalo and the Rams the other day.....these are probably two of the better teams, and they turned it over like Brett Favre on steroids. Seven! turnovers. That's pretty sloppy, IMO, but that's what you get in openers.

I do not think we will be sloppy. I wouldn't doubt a bit that the topic of sloppiness was addressed in the meeting room on Friday. Rodgers is not sloppy with the ball. Jones and Dillon have shown they can protect the rock. Watkins and Cobb are veterans who shouldn't be sloppy with the ball.

On defense, these are all veterans out there with the exception of our first round picks, who might not play that much. No reason for sloppy.

And of course, LaFleur's teams are generally not very sloppy. We just about always score at least 20, and when we do, we usually win. I think we'll hit 20 in the second quarter.
