Packers 2024 Draft Class Has Big Impact on the Defense This Season
By GilMartin

The Green Bay Packers draft class of 2024 has made a significant impact on the team this season. In fact, three players selected by GM Brian Gutekunst a year ago have become not only starters but significant contributors to a defense that ranks in the top 10 in most major categories.
In the second round, the Packers selected linebacker Edgerrin Cooper. The Texas A&M alum added speed at the position to compliment Quay Walker. Although he started only four games as a rookie, any time Cooper was on the field, he looked like a big-play machine. He finished his rookie campaign with 87 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, broke up four passes, seven quarterback hits and 13 tackles for loss. He also intercepted a pass, recovered two fumbles and forced one more.
This season, Cooper has become a full-time starter. While he only played 55 percent of the team’s defensive snaps a year ago, in 2025, he’s been on the field for 99 percent. His total tackles have already surpassed last year’s numbers, but for the most part, the big plays have not been there as much as they were in 2024. The biggest reason for that is addition of Micah Parsons. By adding Parsons, defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has not been blitzing Cooper as frequently as he did a year ago.
Cooper remains a strong tackler and plays the run well. When he is called upon to blitz, he can still get pressure on the quarterback, and his speed helps him run down ball carriers and cover receivers.
With their other second round pick in 2024, the Packers added safety Javon Bullard. Bullard split his time as a rookie between safety and slot corner, but this season he has found a home in the slot. Despite playing through injuries, Bullard has become a strong contributor to the defense. He makes strong tackles and plays well near the line of scrimmage.
Bullard has improved in coverage this season. In 2024, opposing quarterbacks had a quarterback rating of 120.6 when throwing to receivers covered by Bullard according to Pro-Football-Reference.com. This year, that number has improved by more than 30 points.
Last month, Hafley explained Bullard’s contributions to the defense. “He's the type of guy that I'm confident playing back at safety, playing at nickel. He can kind of do it all. He can play in the half, he can play in the middle of the field, he can insert in the run game and he can blitz,” Hafley said. “There's times we do want to get him back there in certain situations, in certain personnel groupings that we feel are better, where there's some down-and-distances where we're comfortable with that. We just try to rotate him in, and it's also depending how much he's been at nickel and how many reps he's had. We need to get him involved in the game, because he's really a player you don't want to take off the field.”
In the fourth round, the Packers added safety Evan Williams. He claimed the starting safety job opposite Xavier McKinney last season and has made progress in year two of his NFL career.
Williams is an intelligent player who reads offenses well and puts himself in position to make plays. In addition to playing the run well, Williams leads the Packers with three interceptions this season. He has also broken up five passes and made four tackles for loss.
Last week, Matt LaFleur explained Williams’ contributions to the defense. “He’s playing really good football,” the Packers head coach said. “He’s always been a pretty aware player. I think he’s got great instincts, but now his knowledge of what we’re trying to get accomplished and then just his ability to disguise and hold things, and then on the snap, trigger – you definitely feel his presence in the run support.”
These three players have all become important contributors to the Green Bay defense this season. The best part is, all three have the potential to continue to improve down the stretch of this season and beyond. On defense, the 2024 draft is looking like a strong one for the Green Bay Packers.

The 2024 draft class has definitely had a positive impact on the D in 2025.
Almost as impactful as the 2026 & 2027 1st round picks.

LVN was playing well this season before he got injured, and he may be able to come back soon. His story is not over.

Far as I can tell the 26 & 27 1s have been pretty impactful so far...

Bullard has turned into a very solid player. He's improved his coverage and has not allowed a TD so far this season. He has missed a few more tackles, but I'm sure he'll eventually get that ironed out. Allowing him to concentrate on the slot position has been beneficial.
Williams might have been the steal of that draft, a gem for sure.
I noticed that Hopper wasn't mentioned. He didn't do a bad job filling in at times when Walker was out. Unfortunately I don't know how much more we'll see of him with all these big games coming up, but it would be nice to know if he could actually replace Walker going forward. We'll see. It's a bit risky letting Walker go because he is a starter and makes a lot of tackles, but if we could do better from an overall performance and value standpoint, it might be worth it.

Great article, Gil, and so true.
Edgerrin Cooper. THAT was one hella pick! As was Bullard 13 picks later in R2. Adding Evan Williams in R4 was remarkable. All 3 players have been huge contributors ever since for the Packers.
LB Ty'Ron Hopper and DB Kitan Oladapo could both wind up surprising as we progress forward. Seems to me they are both have the gifts to step in and make plays.
Still stymied by the Morgan pick, and how he's been used.

Agreed, and Hopper and Oladapo are two of GB's best ST players.
Morgan is next year's LT after Sheed is let go for the big bucks and compensatory pick. He does need to get stronger, but he has good feet.

Thanks, greengold. Hopper and Oladapo can also join the club, but they aren't there yet. As you said the potential is there. I haven't given up on Morgan. I think he's the starting LT next season and we'll see where it does from there. Thanks for the comment and the kind words. GPG

This is the 2024 Draft class:
1. Jordan Morgan
2. Edgerrin Cooper
3. Javon Bullard
2.Marshawn Lloyd
3. Ty'Ronn Hopper
4. Evan Williams
5. Jacob Monk
6. Kitan Oladapo
7.Travis Glover
8.Michael Pratt
9. Kalen King
- Bullard, Cooper and Williams have contributed greatly.
Lloyd, Morgan, Monk, Hopper have either been disappointments (Morgan/Monk, Glover) or have not played at all (Lloyd) or played too little to fully evaluate (Hopper), Kalen King ?

That's such a typical Packer draft. Until we need another QB we should just trade the 1st round pick for a couple of later picks.

Getting 2 solid or better starters and a solid slot CB/defender all from one draft is huge. Oladapo and Hopper seem to be fine on special teams and Hopper might take over for Quay next year. Morgan had the look of a starting LT in training camp and hopefully that is what happens next year. Overall that is a solid draft.

They need to find out if Morgan can be a LT or not. He really hasn't shown much anywhere else. I hate to say it, but there's a good chance he will never be anything special.

Considering that
Darnell Savage Jr , Eric Stockes ,
King, and Jones were replaced.
Best class in 10 years.

It seems like a very good class on defense. On offense, I think next season Morgan will be a starter and either Glover or Monk will be a reliable backup. Lloyd.....I've seen a lot of Packers rookies get hyped, but never one who has produced so little in two years. BUT...if he's healthy enough to compete for the #2 spot next year, and he can survive training camp and the exhibition season, then he could help the team. Wilson will almost certainly be gone in free agency, so there's an opening.

Lloyd should never have been picked.
I believe a WR was targeted.

I'm not seeing the same speed from Cooper since he gained 10 pounds in the off-season. He seems to be settling in as a very good player, not the great player I thought he might become. Definitely a good draft pick, though.

good article Gil ... All three players Cooper, Evans, J Bullard really playing well with my guess two could garner all-pro consideration next year. This years defensive draft boasts W Brinson and B Sorrell both getting quality minutes now both showing upside potential.
Speaking of potential checkout A Belton double block on J Jacobs winning touchdown run against da bears... I really believe he future all pro. Last thought to posters obsessed with No 1 Pick... remember Its just a number if you can get three or more all pros out of later rounds what is the difference ( Its the player not the number )
