Packers 18 Saints 17: Game Balls & Lame Calls

Statement comeback announces Packers' arrival.

Football is such a crazy sport.  Last week the Green Bay Packers lost a game they should have won. Yesterday at Lambeau Field they won a game that perhaps they should have lost. How to explain Green Bay’s historic comeback win over New Orleans?  How does a completely self destructive offense shoot itself in the foot for three quarters, only to transform into a precise, dominating, unstoppable big play unit in the final frame?

It was the kind of victory that felt like a statement.  I know we shouldn’t overreact to one game, but this was an important benchmark.  Until now, we only hoped Jordan Love could be this kind of quarterback.  We only hoped the receivers could make these kinds of clutch catches.  We only hoped the entire team could summon up the resolve and the execution to pull a game like this out of the fire.  Now, they’ve actually done it.

To be sure, they still needed some luck to go their way. They needed rookie kicker Blake Grupe to choke on a very makeable 46 yard field goal try, which would have put the Saints ahead with one minute to play. But that doesn’t diminish the accomplishment. The Packers were suddenly able to put all the talent available to them to perfect use, and pulled off a comeback that tied the biggest in franchise history.  Even more impressive, they did it while missing six of their best players.

This feels like an announcement.  These feisty Packers putting the league on notice they will have to be dealt with.  They will make more mistakes, they will lose more games, but this bunch will be no pushover for anybody on their schedule.  They seem to have the ability to be in the playoff hunt.  On Thursday we will find out if they are already the best team in the division.  Regardless, we know now we won’t have to go through this football season making excuses to ourselves to justify a lost season.  The Pack is back.  And they are only going to get healthier and better.

GAME BALLS

Jordan Love

After three quarters, I would never have dreamed I would be putting Love in this category.  Yes, his teammates were making life difficult for him with penalties and missed assignments.  But Love had his share of bad throws and incorrect decisions.  But oh, that fourth quarter!  A couple of defensive pass interference penalties didn’t hurt, but QB10 put the ball beautifully on the money on those two touchdown drives. The last one was downright Elway-esque.  He hit Wicks over the middle.  Then ran the ball for 24 yards, put a 30 yard bomb perfectly over the shoulder of a diving Romeo Doubs, did it again on a diving grab by Jayden Reed for 30 more, hit a third and ten to Reed to the two yard line, and then tossed a precise back shoulder throw to Doubs for the score.  Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre never did it better.  I think we could all get used to this.

Romeo Doubs

Usually, we are impressed when a Packer receiver makes an incredible catch in a game. Doubs made three of them, including a spectacular sideline reception in the third quarter, and the back shoulder grab on the game-winning touchdown.  He finished with five receptions for 73 yards and a score.  He is fast becoming the security blanket for Love in the way that Davante Adams was for Aaron Rodgers.

Rashan Gary

No longer satisfied with just quarterback pressures, Gary had three sacks and forced the Saints offensive line to adjust to him.  He was part of a defensive unit that was able to hold the Packers within striking distance as the offense stumbled through the first three quarters.

Honorable mentions for many, including Jayden Reed, who dropped a couple, but made two big catches when the team needed them the most.  On the first touchdown drive, he latched on to a critical third down throw over the middle to give Green Bay a first and goal on the two.  Then the diving bomb on the decisive drive.  He doesn’t catch them all, but he’s exciting to watch.  To tight end Luke Musgrave who led the Pack with six grabs for 49 yards, including a couple of third down conversions.  And to Rasul Douglas who defended well, especially squashing a screen pass for a big loss in the first half.

LAME CALLS

Penalties

Eleven of them.  Most of them pure drive killers.  I can understand the holding penalties.  The powerful Saints defensive front forced a few holds.  But the parade of false starts and illegal formations are completely unforced.  Just mental errors.  The coaches must do something to get these young players to focus and execute.  They can’t depend on dramatic comeback finishes every game.

THREE AND OUT

-- How about that decision by Matt LaFleur to go for two after the first touchdown?  I will admit I thought it was a terrible idea at the time.  The offense was executing so poorly, no way I thought they could pull it off.  Shows you what I know.  Love made a nice ad lib on the play and hit Samori Toure for the conversion.  I know it’s all about analytics, but it’s going to take me awhile to get used to decisions like that.

-- And how about that move Love put on the defensive back to juke into the end zone on the first touchdown?  Love was, in fact, the team’s leading rusher with 39 yards on nine attempts.  Not an ideal situation, but Love’s running looks like it will develop into a major weapon for this offense.  He is also proving to be deceptively elusive in the pocket.

-- Not a great day for special teams.  The punt coverage unit gave up the 75 yard punt return for a score, and there were two holding penalties on punt returns.  Yet another factor that made the comeback win so improbable.  What in the world could this team look like if they put it all together with healthy players for four full quarters?

Before the season started, I suspected this young team's play would be best defined as "lumpy".

They're confirming my suspicions.

A nice, unexpected, serendipitous win, Now it's on to Detroit and a chance to see which team shows up to play Thursday night.

"Before the season started, I suspected this young team's play would be best defined as "lumpy."

Early in the season I used "rollercoaster" instead of "lumpy" but we both had the same idea. This team is talented, but very young and very inconsistent. The mental errors (penalities, dropped balls) drove me nuts in the first half but the talent showed in the second half. This is going to be an interesting season......

And a rollercoaster it was!

Valuable experience. Can they put it to good use against the Lions? It will be interesting to watch.

"It's a building year." Hopefully this is a big step in their development. There's certainly team comraderie, but it's almost certain that some players will develop more quickly than others. Even so, I think they'll be rallying around each other just like they have rallied to the ball, at least when the defense has been playing well. Hopefully that brings everyone along ...

The Packers losing a games they should win and the winning a game they should lose is one of the reasons we watch football. You never know when a team will scored 70 points.

I agree with this article. I hope Love starts hitting the deep ball. I put a bet on the Saints and got 1.5 points. I won both ways.

growing pains as expected much of it will right itself, I believe Leavitt on special teams is a liability now he was in position to at least slow the runner on the punt return , all the Packers crowded one side of the field someone has to maintain lane discipline .

GAME BALLS

Jordan Love
While he didn't have great stats (22 of 44 for 259 yards 1 TD, 1 INT), threw his first pick of the year, he came through and made every play they needed to win. He had some miss throws and he had some that he would likely want back. The one to Musgrave would have been a 60+ yard TD. But he over threw him. I feel like Love's numbers were bad because the amount of dropped passes this team had. Love put the ball a number of times right on the money and they were dropped. Also they had started so many drives with a penalty pushing the team back.

Romeo Doubs
The 30 yard catch was a hell of play! The TD catch was very impressive. He is becoming the number 1 target for Love. He had 12 targets. The next closest was Musgrave with 8. Doubs is becoming Loves go to guy.

Rashan Gary
Its crazy the difference Gary makes. He is all over the field. He only makes the other guys around him better.

LAME CALLS

Penalties
This was one of the worst parts of this game. One of the reasons why the offense couldn't get going, is because they kept getting pushed back with penalties. 11 penalties for 90 yards is way to many. essentially that is the whole football field.

Dropped passes
There were way to many balls hitting WR's hands that were not caught. Off the top of my head Reed had 2, Heath, Toure each had one. These were big moments that simply were not caught. These young WR's need to learn to fight for the ball better and get stronger hands. if they get their hands on the ball, they need to come down with it!

THREE AND OUT
-- How about that decision by Matt LaFleur to go for two after the first touchdown?
I felt it was dumb for the reason that they just got some momentum on offense. That being said, that had to of been a jolt in the arm for the team when they converted it.

-- Musgrave
Musgrave is instantly becoming a weapon for the offense. He was targeted 8 times coming up with 6 catches. Love unfortunately missed him on the deep ball because if he hits him its a 60+ yard TD. He is becoming one of the most reliable targets on the team. One game very soon he is going to have a big TD.

-- Carlson
We haven't talked a lot about him, but he has been very good to this point.

I agree on the Game Balls but I would include Rasul Douglas and Luke Musgrave rather than give them honorable mention. They both had excellent games. Musgrave should have had a TD but Love overthrew him early in the game. Once Love gets more accurate on those deep throws the Packers offense will be deadly to handle. Get back Jones, Watson and Jenkins and lookout NFL.

Lame Calls: Penalties, missed assignments. The coaches need to get those mistakes cleaned up. That is what TC and pre season games are for. Yes it's a young team but it's unto the coaches to prevent the team from stopping and defeating themselves which the Packers did for the first 3 quarters.

BTW, Carlson still has not missed kick during the regular season. Bisaccia still has some work to do with STs. We can't allow long returns or returns for TDs.

Wishing that we had a full week to prepare for the Lions. Thanks, Since '61

Thursday Football is unfair to the players and coaches and is nothing but a stupid money grab for the NFL itself. Does not consider the time to heal for players and the danger of their health!

“ Thursday Football is unfair to the players and coaches and is nothing but a stupid money grab for the NFL itself. ”

So the NFLPA agreed to a revenue sharing plan where the income from TNF goes only to the owners? Or did they (NFLPA) gladly agree because more revenue to the league is more money in the players pockets? This claim that it’s unfair to the players when they overwhelmingly approved the last collective bargaining agreement is just silly.

Only for the deadheads who can only think of dollars that aren't much use when you get and have health problems or dementia or Alzheimer's now does it? The players make plenty of money without the needed risk of Thursdays added! Also do some research on how players actually feel about the games, besides the NFL!

You need to do some research. While there's a Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers whose contract is spread across the interverse when they sign an extension there are 40 other players who make near the minimum for only a few years. Extra money is extra money for a vast majority.

CheeseDeadHead - I seriously doubt that the players salary would be any less if TNF did not exist. TNF is not unfair to the players from a financial perspective but it is unfair to the players from a safety perspective and a quality of play perspective. Tired players or players who are not fully recovered from their previous game become sloppy players and have a higher risk for injury.

Combine that with travel to Europe to play games and you further diminish player safety.

More importantly what has the league done to improve player safety while increasing their injury risks? Where is the better equipment to protect the players? Where are the grass fields versus a few inches of "turf" over slabs of concrete? It's not here because the owners/league won't make the investment in their product who are the players. They are fine with a diminished on field product as long as the money keeps rolling in.

It is unfair to the players and it's unfair to the fans who fill the stadiums. The league has the extra revenue but where does the extra money go in terms of player safety? Thanks, Since '61

I actually am a tad skeptical of the risk to healthy players from a short week. Other physical sports manage just fine and more often.

However, I think it is damaging to the product because either teams play banged up guys (negating point one) with less rest or they don’t play players before (as I suspect was the case for us yesterday) or after.

I’d prefer the NFL played on Saturday if it wants an extra day, but college football and probably many fans wouldn’t. I certainly hate the idea of flex Thursdays as a fan. What I don’t like about this is when it happens against a divisional opponent, since it’s not mirrored, it’s a tilt in the odds, but that type of thing never seems to bother the NFL. It should, but success and credibility aren’t always bedmates. Just look at the investment officials.

The league could have increased roster sizes, especially going to 17 games, but that is my main beef. They are asking more of the players, but unwilling to spend the money (bigger rosters) to reduce the need to play tired or dinged up players. Increase the roster size, then you can put in protocols for short weeks to require teams to put dinged players on the inactive list.

At least both teams have the same schedule for this game, the same amount of time between games. That should be a constant.

I think it's just about never having more than two days between games, to keep their customers hooked.

"CheeseDeadHead - I seriously doubt that the players salary would be any less if TNF did not exist. "

Salary cap/floor are determined based on revenue. More revenue more salary cap.

"Combine that with travel to Europe to play games and you further diminish player safety."

12 hour flight versus 6? That diminishes safety?

We had 4-6 teams playing on Thanksgiving every year for eons and all of a sudden when it's every team that needs to play on average 1 Thursday game during a season then it's this huge money grab/safety issue/etc?

"More importantly what has the league done to improve player safety while increasing their injury risks? Where is the better equipment to protect the players? "

Unfortunately, you are asking for a miracle. Where are the advances to protect boxers? Where are the advances to UFC fighters? Here's the catch22, the simplest and likely only way to SIGNIFICANTLY eliminate injuries in football is to END THE SPORT. A brain, encased in a skull, bathed in a fluid was never "designed" to take repeated impact to the carrier.

"Where are the grass fields versus a few inches of "turf" over slabs of concrete? "

While David Bakhtiari likes to bring it up whenever an injury happens, the owners have data that shows there is little impact of artificial turf compared to grass on injuries. No, they didn't just ask each other, they funded studies to look at the data. The problem is that most of society wants to make decisions on outliers when all of the data tells a different story. Two real world examples, silicone breast implants and the Erin Brokovich movie. Two hot topic, PR driven, lawyer driven money grabs and what is the actual data (from epidemiologists). Silicone Breast implants do not lead to increases in connective tissue issues in women. The data in CA where the "toxic" substance was supposedly used by PG&E shows no significant increase in adverse health outcomes like cancer for the exposed individuals. A good friend of mine reviewed cancer clusters in California when they reported, almost every time there was no significant increase that revealed a toxic stop sign or whatever. People hear about a neighbor or a former teammate having an issue that they had and their brain connects the similarities, but to find an answer you need to ask everyone around you even those who didn't have an issue and almost universally that initial link was irrelevant.

Packers0808 - I have hated Thursday football games since the Packers lost to the Lions on Thanksgiving Day in 1962 and ruined the their undefeated season. They ended 13-1 and went on to defeat the NY Giants 16-7 for the 1962 NFL Championship. I still believe to this day that if Lombardi had the entire week to prepare the Packers would have gone 15-0 in 1962.

Beyond that, as you correctly point out three days is not enough time to rest the players bodies and adequately prepare for the next game. But greed rules the day and $$$$ are all that matters. Thanks, Since '61

Ratings are a funny thing. They're entirely based on broadcast TV, which is only tracked by a Nielsen ratings box attached to your home. Has anyone here ever had a Nielsen ratings box in their home?

And other forms of viewing, which ARE trackable, continue to get a larger share of the market.

I think Fuzzy's Mom dying the week of the '62 Detroit Thanksgiving game put all of the OL in a putrid funk. That and a completely fired up and quite talented Detroit defensive front led to the Packers loss that day. That was the day the "Look Out Bart" block was invented.

The motivational impact of a death has had negative impacts on entire teams many times, I will cite one more. The death of Joe Philbin's son the week before the2011, 15-1 Packers dropped a playoff game to the NY Giants. The entire team played like an albatross was hung around their necks, IMO due to the whole spectacle of the death, funeral and changes in their preparation schedule.

I agree since 61', that players are put at unreasonable risk of injury by shortened weeks. And unlike some, I believe the league could find ways to pay for more safety. I would add that football eats up so much time when you have extra evening games. It's worse during the holidays when there is Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday games. I can't watch other games because the wife and family miss me, and because I wouldn't have time for hunting, cleaning up the yard ad garden, and home maintenance. The older days of football on Sunday and Monday night were better, in moderation - withh the special Thanksgiving and Christmas games, and even now those are too much. The NFl is maximizing their revenues to be playing the4r suprtbowl in April pretty soon!

Lame call: LaFlower leaving points on the field and making insane 2-point attempts. He got lucky and everything worked so he is now a genius instead of an incompetent boob. Getting away with bad decisions does not make him a genius, it makes him lucky.

Ugly: Penalties and special teams. It looked like they invited Mo Drayton back for a guest coaching gig.

Yep. Especially with the slow whistles. I think KC was as irritated by having to put in all the effort on a play that's going 3 inches one way or the other. That pile was stopped and where's the whistle? It happened a few times yesterday where they were going to let it turn into a rugby scrum instead of blowing a whistle as forward or reverse progress was essentially done. Plus with a mob of 5-10 guys how can you possibly know where the ball progress could be accurately spotted. Blow the damn whistle.

I suspect almost every Packer fan expected games like they’re have for the past two weeks. Which makes watching them very entertaining. I feel that this team is learning how to win. I know on the surface a ridiculous statement, but w/o Rodgers and so many young players, esp. playmakers, the team has to reevaluate how they will win games. Don’t know for sure, but suspect they way they have coached this team is even different from years past in the way of motivation and expectation. I do think that MLF’s offense is great for this squad.

Give Love time with these pass catchers and his 50% completion will become high 60’s %. The reason I say this is because, many times the routes are run different from where Love is expecting. When you have to throw the ball within 3 seconds, timing has never been more important in making completions. His balls are almost always a spiral, his foot work looks good (no happy feet), his vision is always down field, he makes smart decisions on when to run or not and looks poise and calm. Lastly, he’s not afraid of throwing a receiver open which is enjoyable to watch, especially since Rodgers didn’t like to do that because he was so fearful of INT’s. We didn’t win many of the 50-50 balls thrown, but most all of them gave our receivers a great chance to make the play. As time goes on I believe more of those will be caught as they work together longer.

Love wasn't a good deep ball passer in college and he still isn't...dont know if he ever will be, his best deep ball is one that gets an INT call as in the last two games...without those calls yesterday???

You guys must be fun at parties,GEEZE. We're one of the youngest teams, missing 5 pro bowlers, pull off a great comeback victory against a conference team, and all you can do is complain. I had some much, I jumped off the couch, forgot I was 67 and pulled a hammy.

If Musgrave improves his footwork at the catch point and Reed can become more consistent catching, the sky is the limit for those two. However, at present it’s a hit and miss growth curve. Heath was so aggressive going for the ball in preseason, that’s twice now he’s been the opposite in 2 games. Someone just tell him to trust himself.

I feel a bit of trepidation saying this because it involves added risk, but Love looked better in the 4th in part because I think LaFleur had to release the shackles. Love seemed better when allowed to play in a more aggressive O. That’s a great sign. Perhaps we start taking off the training wheels from this point.

The thing I really want some insight in is the change in performance of the OL at half time in terms of keeping the pocket cleaner longer. What changed?

We simply cannot run block inside. That’s going to continue to bite us. That isn’t a great run playing DL we faced yesterday either. Myers remains an obstacle we can’t overcome in that respect. Newman actually held up much better than expected again though, on a positive note.

Tom’s injury is I hope minor, but I am not worried about our depth at T. Nijman and Jones remain even if Bakh doesn’t play and both might help in the run game. Walker is holding up well. However, we need to not get many more. Hopefully this is the high water for OL injuries.

I may be the only one, but I thought Taylor had a significant role in us turning the corner in that game, mostly through passes admittedly. If he’d been in the same page and not stopped that was a 4th down TD, but he allowed us to get the chains moving. I think he’s earned more time and a roster spot (he has used up his last elevation). He just gets north/south fast and gets yards to move the chains.

Eventually Kraft will leak out from 12 personnel. There should be no excuses going forward to covert the 3rd and short downs. The Play calling has to be more exacting. Again the HC has to know when to challenge a call, know when to go for two and when to call a timeout. Those are his responsibilities. If he cannot master these tasks , he should put down the play sheet.

While you have a valid point I think it's more about play calling than #27. Throw to RVs and TEs more! A "checkdown" that goes for 8 yards is a great play.

I thought MLF’s first 4th down call was excellent—had the execution been better, it was a huge gainer.
I also agreed with his decision for a 2-pt conversion.
I’m over Dillon—give me Taylor/Wilson.
I mentioned in an earlier post that our receivers will need to make more contested passes in the future—but in this game Doubs did it when he had to.
The most impressive point was winning without our 6 critical starters…which doesn’t include Stokes, whom I believe will be big help when he returns.
Go Packers!!!

I liked the 2-pt conversion, but didn’t like the first 4th down at that time of the game. But, if you do go for it, I especially didn’t like the play call. I think you go with a quick route that has a higher percentage of success. Yes, I realize the guy was wide open, but my point is you have too many components to that play which could lead to a failure. Of course, that is what happened. I like the play call as a 1st or 2nd, not a 4th down.

Game Ball: Rashan Gary.
Good Balls: Savage and Ballentine for exceeding expectations.
Lame Call: A short, low, punt with little hang time to the speedy Rashid Shaheed.

Season Ball: the faith in and respect the team seems to have for Jordan Love.

You are right about Love, it’s striking how he seems to be an indivisible part of the players concept of the team as a unit beyond just the O. Impressive.

Obviously, we need better ST coaches and/or better ST players. That'll fix everything, just like it always has.

Maybe, we could just get smart and play the percentages. Then, we'd have no returns against us, for zero yardage. Zero penalties, zero injuries. Just punt it out of bounds and fair catch every one you get.

Special teams players and coaches come and go, but the nature of the beast is that returning punts, or allowing your opponent to return them, are low percentage plays that can easily cost you a game.

Honestly, I thought the referees allowed the Saints CBs to hold, grab, and make contact with our WRs all day. They finally called a few in the 4th quarter.

Love has shown me some things. He has resolve and a leadership ability it seems. He is accurate 20 yards and in and has the ability to run and get out of the pocket. He still needs to work on the deep ball. That is something he continues to struggle with but hopefully that improves as the year goes on.

Great win for this young team. It will hopefully give them tons of confidence going into the Detroit game this week.

Lattimore and especially Taylor were dictating and dominating the WRs for most of the game. They were VERY aggressive at the snap, pushing receivers off their routes, and then sticking with them through the play.

Love had a few missed throws and receivers had some off routes...but the Saints D...especially the CBs had a lot to do with the Packers pass O strife.

I've been impressed with JL's pocket awareness, game management, risk tolerance. But I'm concerned with his accuracy. I've done a lot of listening and reading since the game and all I hear is that he threw marvelously but sometimes his receivers didn't quite measure up. Looks to me like he's just not real accurate. Most of those contested passes were thrown a little short so the receiver had to slow or turn or reach back into the teeth (literally) of the defender. Even the two dpi calls were fortunate because they were poor passes that were underthrown, causing receivers to slow and reach back into the cb's. I hope accuracy is a learnable skill.

This is my concern as well, although I will say that perhaps his inaccurate throws are more noticeable than they would be with other QBs because he does everything else so well. I think the accuracy issue, which is not a severe one, is the only thing preventing Love from being an elite QB. As you say, it's not just deep balls, there are quite a few shorter passes that are a little off the mark. I am hoping the accuracy improves over time as he is able to develop more of a rhythm. The fourth quarter was promising in that regard.

I agree with both of you about the inconsistent accuracy. Doesn't it look like he's throwing side-arm a lot? To my eye, he had more than a few Matt Stafford like throws: clearly a very good arm but his throwing motion is rarely the same twice. I feel good knowing Tom Clements is working with him.

When Adams left, there were many who asked what he would do without 12 to prop him up. Having watched Adams for a season-plus in LV playing with the likes of Carr and Garoppolo (and how 12 played last year), one has to start coming round to the point that Adams might have been the one doing the propping.

Didnt 12 put up better numbers even when he was not in the team his first 2 MVP's? Agreed Adams is the top Wr and definitely has his share in Rodger's success during that 2020-2021 seasons where Rodgers won MVP. But i am not sure why i always felt like even Adams choked abit like Rodgers in the big moments esply that 2020 season against Bucs.

It takes two. Actually it takes a whole team. The connection AR12 had with #17 was legendary. With that "last dance" thing, AR may have danced his way out of a career.

Yes Wr1 should not be all about spreading the field. WR1 is about being the safety blanket for the Qb when the plays were broken and Wr1 is about the QB counting on the WR to make the play for him when needed. Because of these qualities I feel doubs is the WR1 in this team.

Doubs is 11 of 20. That does not describe the role you defined. #9 is a "field stretcher," what I call the MVS role, when he's at his best. I would expect him to get the most receiving yards and TDs if he played 17 games, but not the most targets.

The role you defined should be filled by Musgrave. If he gets targeted more than both Reed and Doubs I'd be fine with that. All three should get targeted more than a hypothetical #9 in early season, IMHO.

On throws longer than 10 yards JL10 is 16 of 41. The simplest way to improve that is eliminate 16 of those attempts that were thrown into tight coverage, then it becomes 16 of 25. Of throws over 20 he's 3 of 16. I don't attribute this to "accuracy," because he has in fact thrown DIMES, including deep. His completion rate needs to increase. I don't put all that on his targets, but I think the ball usually goes where he intends to put it; accuracy is not the issue. Expecting Musgrave to run faster than he can, and Heath is even slower. I wanted JL10 to play longer in the preseason games to establish a connection with the rest of his possible targets. I stand by that; it hasn't happened and the team is worse for it.

I'm amazed that we got away with Walker and Newman on the left side. They got help from TEs, moving pockets, etc., I thought we were going to have Bakhtiari and Newman on the left side this year, and I thought that would be a strength.

Reed and Doubs, especially, made some top notch catches. New Orleans had some very good coverage and they made a lot of on-target passes end up as incomplete. If we can get WR play like that on a semi-regular basis, we're in business.

The Punt Return.....if only we didn't have to let a guy like that return a punt in that situation. I mean, you're letting one play, when the bottom of the roster is on the field, potentially cost you the game. And what are you getting in return? Why give your opponent a chance? Similarly, the two penalties on our return team could have been easily avoided.

Gary. Wow. He looked like a man against boys on some plays.

I can type today...speaking is a bit of an issue. Hoarse and sore throat from hollering at the game yesterday.

It was probably the loudest I can recall Lambeau at 2 times during the game:
1. When Jordan Love was introduced for the first time at Lambeau Field as the 3rd era QB since 1992.
2. When the Packers scored the tying TD. The PAT was loud too...but that TD...wow!

It was quiet during the 2nd and 3rd quarters as neither the O or the D was doing much, STs breakdown TD, and the stupid penalties. But the 4th was like a new game.

I was disappointed how easily the D let the Saints drive into position to win the game with a FG. D played prevent that almost prevented a victory. We needed the D to play complimentary football right there and they did not. There were so many disgusted fans watching a comeback gift being about to be ripped from them. then the miss due to the young kicker misjudging the Lambeau wind. (Flag was flapping due to East wind...but in the stadium it swirls and blow across the field from the West.)

But you know what? Even if the FG was good, the way the patched up OL was pass blocking and how Love and receivers were making plays...IMO the Pack would have driven into Carlson range to win the game.

Yeh, indeed, what would the Packers offense look like if it had everyone healthy and able to play?

But a good game, a really good game. I thought the Packers offense looked okay even through the first three quarters when they hadn't scored zilch. Mistakes, of course, penalties, dropped passes, bad passes, and no decent running game ( Dillon had maybe three good runs in all ), but the offensive line did pretty good protecting Love in the pocket.

But, man, the last half of the fourth quarter, come on! Clutch catching, clutch passing, and the clutch decision by Matt LaFleur in the fourth quarter after the Packers first touchdown. . . to go for a two-pointer instead of the one ( and making it! ). Wow. Outstanding all around.

And the defense holding the Saints to just ten points for the entire game. Jesus, is it possible that Joe Barry. . . Or would the defense be even better with a new defensive coach?

And Rashan Gary for the first time really showing me something special so far this season with not only his injury recovery but even more so with his rushing-the-quarterback ability. I always thought he was good, but. . . Let's see what he does for the rest of the season.

I'm thinking maybe, possibly, Matt LaFleur and Joe Barry have hold of something special here ( this entirely new Packer team ) that they have to adjust to with an entirely new way of coaching.

I'm liking the fact that opposing teams no longer can use the same decade old defensive playbook.

That cross body, cross formation 2 point conversion was a pick waiting to happen - that defenses would bank that Aaron Rodgers would never consider (not that he couldn't - just too risky for him).

As more tape of Jordan Love becomes available, teams will learn his tendencies - but at the moment, I'm liking the unpredictability.

I am going to be honest. In 3rd qr I was sure this game is going nowhere, but I wrote my brother in law that this one was so winnable. I told him that one TD earlier (or prevented return TD) would make this game open for grab. That is good that players had stronger faith than I did. This one was impressive, huge lesson for this young team and positive one.

Now thinking about the game, my opinion is our team was not 0:17 bad. Look that everytime, literarlly everytime when we had a good play there was a penalty. When we finally got some spark, nice rush or pass it sank under the yellow flag. Instead of first down, you get 2nd and 15 or whatever. This is not only a negative move on the field but a hit for the player's mind. Multiple hit. Add these good drives finished on downs, especially this very nice play when Wilson underthrown the ball so badly, and another bad luck, Love slipped (2 in one). On top of it - return TD on our ST which has been not bad since some time. Every play a new bad surprise. I don't look for excuses, but the truth is even being much behind there was a moment we had ~120 yds and Saints ~68.

Jordan Love - I Love his awareness and decision making. In 4th he went into Sean Clifford mode. A gunslinger with no memory looking for another target. Tools are there, some of those just need to be sharpened.

AJ Dillon will now compete with Patrick Taylor, not Aaron Jones (if there was ever any competition). Taylor's TD would change much in RB room.

Packers depth is unique. Every year injury bug is growing and we still compete.

This young team is going to be a lot of fun to watch, which is what many of us who wanted Rodgers traded, were hoping to see. But, the lack of faith in the coaching is still like a poke in the eye. This game is not enough to save Barry and MLF from criticism. The fourth quarter comeback seems more like talented young players making great plays once they could throw the coaches game plan out the window. It just seemed pitch and throw between Love, Reed, and Doubs, three really terrific young players. Once MLF was no longer interfering by running Dillon wide or forgetting to throw to Doubs, the offense rolled. Who knows, maybe MLF can has a little more faith in Love and open up the passing game. On defense, I don't have great expectation that Barry will be able to stop the Detroit offense on Thursday. But who knows, never thought this team would win, down 17-0 with 12 minutes left.

Kenny Clark and Rashan Gary deserve the game balls just for showing leadership. I think their excitement and determination was contagious and I could feel it - I think other packer defenders players saw it too. Walker and McDuffie caught it and were around the ball faster. Savage was putting his shoulder higher and wrapping up his tackles. Brooks got excited. Young team needs leadership, and they had it on defense this game.
