I really liked Chad Muma and Drew Sanders to be Packers when they came out. Those look like very reasonable compensation players to upgrade the LB position. I don't see the Broncos trading Drew Sanders yet, he is on their depth chart.

Jamin Davis is making $5 million this year and has a 5th year option for $14 million, NOPE. Unless you could redo his contract.

Nakobe Dean is the smallest guy of this group and is in competition with Devin White, the LB we should have signed, to be a starter.

Muma is very well rounded . has 2 years left on his contract, and probably can be had for a 6th rounder at most. He is big, fast, tackles better than these other 3, and is strong in coverage. I hope we make an offer for Muma.

If Muma is that good why does he only have 4 starts in two years. Passer ratings allowed over 100 both years, PFF grades of 54 and 38 the last two years. Did play a lot of STs snaps but they have Wilson for that. Think I'd rather see them use that pick on a rookie LB.

I am not saying Muma is a seasoned veteran LL. He was a very good college LB who was drafted in the 3rd round. He hasn't earned a starting spot yet. That's why he is in this article as a cheap trade option for a Green Bay team that inexplicitly slow walked the FA Linebacker market this year. By dumping Campbell, they left a gaping hole on the defense, and didn't fill it when they had multiple opportunities in Free Agency.

Now we are scratching for options with few available. All 4 options left are crapshoots.
#1 Wait for an NFL player to be released- depends on why released too
#2 Trade for a LB-what this article is about-at least these players are on an NFL Team
#3 Claim a LB off another teams Practice Squad-Good enough to hang around
#4 Draft a LB early, Cooper, Colson, or Wilson, and draft one in later rounds-which will at least happen for sure

Do you not suppose that the Personnel dept doesn't have detailed intelligence on other teams cap situations, contracts, etc. Do you not suppose that agents aren't hyper aware that their players may be facing cuts, and that they aren't already nosing around front offices in the event that their players are cut loose.

To approach presumed personnel "deficiencies" reactively (as a fan) is to suppose incompetence from a front office that has given you no reason to assume they are incompetent. It's kind of insulting really.

I am not trying to insult the team Bitter, although I do think it was poor judgement not to pursue a FA replacement of Campbell. Maybe they did, and the offers were too low like with Aaron Jones. It would be more dollars for sure than drafting one is, but the draft is always a crapshoot. And with an established NFL vet, you know what your getting.

GB is at a crossroads quicker than anyone thought. How much of a upward move we make this year is an unknown. Everyone seems to expect 2025 to be a really successful year, but by upgrading LB play, Safety play, and better special teams including kicking, could make or break the 2024 season.

It's a good article that gives more options.

In an different Linebacker article a while back, I brought up a practice squad LB that was picked in the 4th round of the 2022 draft by the Panthers, a poor team that has made a lot of questionable personnel decisions for years.

The player I found was former Penn State star LB, Brandon Smith, and just on age and talent, I would add him to the list of players in this article. Smith was the top high school LB in the country his senior year. He had a strong career @ Penn State and was the 3rd ranked LB in the 2022 draft, behind 2 other players in this article, Nakobe Dean and Devin Lloyd. He has LB size @ 6'4 240lbs, ran 4.5 40 and was rated above average in tackling and pass coverage.

Brandon Smith was projected on some draft services to be drafted in the first round that year. For whatever reason he slipped to the 4th round and has bounced from the 53 man roster to the practice squad. Not every players career explodes when he gets drafted and where he is drafted is a strong determining factor if he makes it in the NFL or not.

The point of this article is introducing players with a lot of talent and potential, who haven't achieved the lofty goal of NFL team starter. Players that potentially could fill holes that the Packers currently have on their roster, and maybe with a second chance can see their careers take off. For whatever reason, the Packers didn't fill the LB hole in free agency. Now we are looking for the needle in the haystack.
