A friend of MLF I guess that’s a good enough reason .

I've seen many people overreacting to him being a friend of MLF. I think it's more important is he has a track record of being a good DB coach and DC (average HC though). Joe Barry had a track record of being one of the worst DC's in the NFL and was a horrific hire. This is the best hire at DC GB could've hopped for as the Vrabel DC dream is just that a dream.

I am not excited about this hire. I am not even comfortable about this hire but I will give him a chance. Who knows he might just be the guy we are looking for. I hope we will be able to hire quality position coaches.

One thing I like is it does not seem like he is reliant on only one scheme. It seems as he might run a 3-4 and a 4-3 to match up to the offense. The Packers are built as a 3-4 man team but they could play 4-3 at times. I also like that he is more of a man defense than a zone defense.

I think I have watched, for years, if not decades, the Packers draft press CBs, then use them in zone all the time.

Yeah , tt remember? Safeties for defensive backs, basketball players as te and wr.guards for tackles. 5 straight 1st round picks on dbs who were completely useless busts. Unfortunately here many adored him.

I think he's going to run the best base defense based on his personnel and the opponent which is smart and not just running the same old shite like DOM, Barry, etc.

Yes, the Packers are #4 in the NFL in man press coverage but 30th in zone defense. JA is the #1 CB in the NFL in man to man press coverage. Running zone majority of the time was asinine.

Going one high would seem to me to be playing to Savage's strengths. I have heard that his real strength, as a safety, is in the box. Does that mean he might come back?

The thing that pisses me off, is of all the interviews taken place is they are all position coaches aspiring to become dc. Why ? Now out of nowhere comes a dB coach,, co dc coordinator and mediocre hc of a small university. Why? , when they're several experienced and esteemed defensive coaches who are free! Several excellent coaches who the flower didn't even think about. I know we're all different, many here like position coaches taking the leap, but why us? For me its a big mistake. With 2 hof qbs, we should have won multiple sbs,but we didn't. Why? One was tt, never gave arod a bloody defence. 2 , should have replaced mm and capers after the debacle at seattle. 3 , We should have tried with insistence on not letting Holmgrem leaving. The this new man know how to call plays,or does he need lessons this off season to learn. If we stink it up next season because of the flowers choice. Murphy should sack his ass immediately after the last match of next season. This man ain't no leslie frazier, wink, or rivera Vrabel wants hc gig, understandable. Bellicick probably wouldn't want dc job, did the fo speak with these coaches? No one knows. I hope 4 the best and expect the worst from mlf choice.

They wanted someone younger hungry to prove themselves but have some DC experience at but have been in the NFL and college and someone that's aggressive, willing to adapt and change and not running that same old worn out Joe Berry bend but eventually break in half defense.

Jim Leonhard was no longer a desired commodity. Vrabel and Bellicheat are never going to take the backseat to MLF.

Leslie Frazier is 64 and too damn old.

wink is 61 years old and in the same boat

The interviews of all the guys with no DC experience is just going through the motions and pumping up candidates in the media while interviewing and hiring someone else. I believe Hafley was already the guy they were going to hire from the start.

Yes they are older, but they're are very experienced and esteemed! This man is going to get his first shot as dc,no ? Forgot to ad lovie Smith in the list, excellent defensive coach, former hc who could help mlf in many ways. The prospects mlf brought in are position coaches aspiring to become dc. Like when mlf came here. In 5 years as hc,has mlf learnt how to make mid game adjustments? How to rid of incompetent coaches a year earlier than later? Same shit will happen next year. He never ran a defence. Hope all of you are right and I'm wrong!

This is the best possible hire available to date.
1.) This dude is the anti-Joe Berry (ton of press man, blitzes, disguising the defense, adjusting in game and throughout the season and playing to his players strengths. Packers are 4th in the NFL in man coverage and 30th in zone coverage. By far JA is the best CB in the NFL in man to man and this is going to revive his career (IF he stays healthy).
2.) No more bs bend but eventually break defense because it wears out the defensive players due to being on the field all day and limiting the offensive possessions for our own team and no more forcing the least TO's in the NFL.
3.) Lets the Safety sit back and roam the field like Savage did in his best season so if they keep Savage this could revive his career.
4.) Has some DC experience unlike any of the other candidates outside of the previous Rams DC that runs the same old bend and eventually break in half defense.
5.) Great with player development, preparation, and intensity (Richard Sherman). I normally don't care for his opinion but on previous DB coaches I hold his opinion in a very high regard.
6.) Combination of college and NFL defensive experience and as a HC. He's a proven leader and shown he can adjust to different schemes at all levels.

I still believe this defense needs an elite smart safety, elite smart MLB a big time DL run stopper, and another solid CB as they need to replace Douglas who was basically a consistent top 15-5 CB in the NFL.

1.) S: Minnesota's Nubin
2.) CB: TJ Tampa
3.) DT: Michael Hall JR (Texas has an even better run stopping DT but just above average in pass rush being he's 360 lbs).
4.) MLB: Hopper out of Missouri

I think the combination of Hafley's aggressiveness and willingness to make necessary adjustments and disguising the defense combined with the acquisition of upgrades at the positions listed in the draft and possibly free agency I believe this is a top 5 defense in majority of defensive metrics including EPA per play, ppg relinquished, DVOA, PFF score, yards per play, 3rd down conversion percentage, TO's forced etc.

It seemed that MLF learned from the his Barry hire. Upon review - there was nothing, or very little, on Barry's resume that reflected a successful past performance. In contrast, is Hafley's resume, which is replete with positive results. What particularly stood out for me was the year when he was Ohio State's defensive co-cordinator. The year before his arrival - Ohio's defense was not very good. The year after he left - their D dramatically regressed. The year that he was the DC - Ohio's defense was outstanding. Perhaps the best in the country.

As for the nepotism. Better the friends you know - than the strangers you don't.

This video made me excited about the hire for the first time. Maybe I just got caught up in Andy's excitement though. My rational brain still has some doubts.

Does anybody know what exactly Hafley's role was as Ohio State co-defensive coordinator? The other guy, Greg Mattison, is listed as defensive coordinator for that season, which suggests that Hafley was the less important of the two. What was the division of labor? Did Hafley call defensive plays? Was there something he contributed to Ohio State's defense that year that made it better, or did they just have a bunch of really good players that year?

It made me uneasy at first to hear that Hafley is Matt LaFleur's friend, but now I'm wondering if he's just a "friend" in the sense that about 100 other coaches are LaFleur's friends. They've never worked together, and they live in different parts of the country. Maybe the "friend" thing has been overplayed a little.
