Well, I wasn't that concerned until Andy went over the results from MLF's previous coordinator choices. :)

I would agree that Parker might be the choice if he doesn't take a similar position elsewhere. He seems to check all of the MLF and organizational boxes. Whether it's the right choice or not remains to be seen, of course.

If we go young, Parker looks as good as any (at least as an ignorant outsider looking in). He seems to be adaptable, but the continuation of a bend and not break type philosophy would seem a strong possibility.

I’d prefer a coach who has the experience and personality to help LaFleur grow in how he perceives defense. I’d also prefer a different core philosophical approach to defense, but those two considerations are different.

Right now I hope we will find that the search is broader than the 4 candidates I know of and, obviously, that the final choice is a good one. I think that’s going to require a coach who can reset expectations and standards—how the players see success being measured and playing time secured—as well as using what we have to their strengths wherever possible.

Andy you make a lot of valid points but one you didn't is this. These jobs are more art than science. You point out that all defenses incorporate five or six basic coverages and four to six basic line schemes and possibly four to six blitz types, but it is how you mix and match them together that is the "special sauce" that makes them special. Look at Spagnoula in KC, Zimmer in Minny, Fangio in Denver, all failed HCoaches but superb D-coordinators.

I am more concerned about what personnel changes will be made to this D for it to fit the coordinators "palette". We all agree that the safety room will get some new faces CB as well but if they want a significant retooling probably not our guy.

Tying into this is how well a coordinator can use the current players to best advantage. The more you are tied to needing difficult-to-find attributes for many pieces in the system you run, the worse your defense is likely to be for some time. You may also be fired by an impatient head coach before you can acquire what you need.

Like Pack88 said, this is art and science blended together. If you are a good guesser of what the opposing offence is going to do based on down, distance and their tendencies, you can win a lot of games with players that may be no better than the oppositions.

20 minutes of telling us we know nothing - sheesh. I'd rather hold my own prejudices and see them proved or disproved, over time.

People generally disliked the Barry hire when it happened..........and they were right.

Let us see what the majority think this time around, when the hire happens. Perhaps the majority are right again.

Andy,
You seem to be confident that LaFluer alone is actually making all of these decisions on position coaches . Im not confident that is the case. Personally, Pettine had a great past track record on defenses but for whatever reason it didn’t work out in GB. Barry did some good here and there but then there were way too many head scratcher games called and even though we have players …just utter confusion . But from the last yrs of Capers til now in 2024…very porous,no tackling defenses and soft. with the exception of 1 yr w/ Pettine where they were top 15. Our Packers have been trying to put together a top 10 D since Capers…
I don’t don’t know if it’s scheme, players or scouting. The trend in the NFL using multiple TE sets, rushing and mobile QBs….dating all the way back to Kaepernick and even way before that. Ive not been a fan of the 3-4 for about the last decade or at least the way we run it….because the opposition has ran all over us and TEs have their way in the middle of the field for yrs and yrs. Passing league ? Yes somewhat. 4000 yard passers were common in 16 game seasons, now …they’re barely doing that with 18 games. As i watch the chiefs ravens game right now it’s all big personnel and multi TE sets….Im sorry but a 3-4 loaded with jesuses for olbs is not stopping anything. Every year it’s the same…we’re all talking about middle and OLBs as if they’re going to save the defense….and they never do. So, it leads me to believe it’s a scheme and coaching issue.

whomever we get…I just want a 4-3 cover 2 or the ability to show different fronts. But, so many players drafted on defense with the exception of last yr…it’s maddening.

Honestly, I don’t even know who’s out there that capable of turning the defense into a top 10 unit. It’s gonna be hard as there’s many immediate and future needs on this team. Preston is aging, not 100% if VanNess will play at the same level as Preston , Clark has been playing too many snaps, A.Jones is in yr 8 , safety has to be addressed and I’m still not confident for right guard and center. And will Carlson get fixed?

I would love to see the MLF interview Brendan Daly of the Kansas City Chiefs. He has a very strong NFL background. He has coached with Spagnuolo for 5 years on the D'Line and Linebackers. He has also coached with the New England Patriots for 4 years. The Chiefs scheme is a pressure defense just as I believe all of us fans are hungry to see.

Also has anyone heard from Green and Gold, I have not seen him post all season?

Maybe he's just waiting til after the SB. That's a good pedigree with exposure to big time games.
