Good to hear of the energy. Hopefully the young roster is going to see that carried over all summer. It’s interesting to hear whose movement skills caught the eye. Of course, that favors the pass catchers, be they RBs or receivers and fast corners. Those guys always look great in shorts and with no disruption or contest at the catch.

Telfort is interesting. You compared his numbers with Jones, but Jones tested at least 50 pounds heavier than he was in camp and looked completely different. Telfort, though he’s not as big, is another guy who I think has a future that hinges on losing significant weight. He was a highly touted college prospect but I think his issues started by getting too big and slow.

I’d like to see him down to 310 to 320 at most. That’s by no means tiny. Nijman is 314 at the same height. Now Nijman is freakishly athletic and powerful by comparison to almost anyone, I don’t expect that kind of difference in Telfort, but I think he’d be radically more effective at about that weight.

Hey, Telfort given that same 3-4 year earned development program could be another UDFA steal, at a highly valuable position. I wish him well.

Have yet to study him. Thanks, Coldworld.

Nijman was a uniquely untrained physical phenom. Just off the charts one way in terms of athleticism and the other in terms of technique. They just let him play almost untutored, since he was that physically dominant in college.

I’m not suggesting Telfort has that upside or back story, more that he would benefit, in my view from being a similar weight to Nijman and that that would reveal athleticism hidden by weight, as it did with Jones. Movement is his biggest weakness at this point.

Well, in 4 years starting at VT facing the best the ACC could offer, including 5 picks in his draft class’ top overall 17 players, Nijman gave up only 1 sack, 2 years starting RT, 2 years starting LT. That 1 sack he gave up? It was on a busted play.

Found that interesting in studying him after his UDFA signing. Ferrell. Allen. Wilkins. Burns. Lawrence. Yosh never gave up a sack to any of those top pass rushers.

Nijman wasn’t untrained. He simply needed technique work, hands, feet, etc, not unlike 99% of the OTs in any given draft. Frank Beamer & his staff did a great job training him. Especially with those results.

I think that DE he gave that only sack up on the busted play to was Oshane Ximines R3 (NYG) of that 2019 draft.

I am hoping one of these young OT's from last year & this year steps up big time, otherwise good chance 'one' of the 2024 1st round draft choices will be an OT, particularly depending on if DB is no longer on the team.

Pretty sure we have something like 14 OTs rostered. It might be more…

Thank you, Andy.

Happy to hear Brenton Cox Jr. shows in these Rooki Minicamp drills as advertised. Gutekunst & his staff would know about as much or more than most about his true character and the issues that caused his dismissal from both Georgia & Florida.

Dismissal may not be the correct term either. Young kid who got busted for weed in one case, tossed from a game retaliating to a hit on him after the whistle in the other case.

Neither warrants dismissal outright, but, Gutekunst knows.

I’m actually really stoked knowing the Packers May reap the benefits of his draft displacement, and wish him well.

Jamyest Williams another unique player, and good to know he shows as advertised too in their drills.

CB Carrington Valentine was Athlon’s #13 ranked CB. He was the 33rd CB taken. We make have gotten a true steal in Round 7, Pick #232.

LaFleur pulling Musgrave aside for special tips reminds me of him doing same with Watson last year.

Toure. He’s a good player, one whom AR never really embraced. Seems that way, maybe killing his 2022 opportunities. Not this year! I love the guy, and wouldn’t be surprised to see Samouri contribute regularly with Love QB1.

Hoop!!! Just needed to get that out. Lol. Seems from his highlights that he understands coverage, and plays CB w passion for the game.

Four months until we play a game for real. When our season ended, it was eight months, so as Bon Jovi would say "We're half way there." We made "The Change", we've gotten rid of the old and we're bringing in the new. Pretty soon we're going to get to play "Predict the 53" and talk about who the better #6 WR is.

I hope they stay healthy, and I hope they look good when the pads go on. That's a couple of months away, (August?) I love it when the Packers have to get rid of good players at the cutdown because there are too many good players in front of them.''

If you can't be optimistic about our future at this point in the season, what's the point?

Exactly. Fans being real fans.

I’m stoked. Guardedly stoked. Lol. 🤣

Seriously, though, I think there’s WAY MORE to be encouraged about than people might realize. Especially all of those endlessly railing into the ether on Joe Barry.

I don’t see many opining he might now have the players he needs to begin his YEAR 3. All three of those under difficult conditions with which to acquire talent, given our cap machinations in that same span.

Hell, I’m excited for our defense. Too.

Love, with THAT OL? With THOSE RBs? And 8 or 9 dynamic receiving talents added WR/TE? More?

The Packers with … oh, how high should we rank the STs? Predictions?

I’ve been thinking we will win the NFC North this year… even long before the draft. I still feel that way, and from there, wherever they want to go as a team in the playoffs.

Addition by subtraction can be a very good thing.

Thanks Andy!

Edit!

Have a lot of enthusiasm and excitement this year for so many younger players, but definitely keeping my eye on Cox & Wicks. Wicks is going to surprise many. Wouldn't it be great if Cox evolves to a heck of a player without need for draft choice. Is this his agent saying GB is low keyed without many distractions outside football, so you should go there and focus on football & resurrecting your career? Either way, I'm glad and wish him well! That Edge position undoubtedly has gotten pretty competitive.

I look at anyone dismissing Wicks based on his 2022 season akin to those who dismissed Love based upon his 2019 tape. Circumstances be damned.

I think Wicks, wearing 13 now, might surprise some folks as well.

Watch Wicks’ 2021 highlights and be ready to wipe the drool from your face.

I hope you are right about Wicks. My concern is the drops. Let’s hope that is a thing of the past. We can’t just ignore that it has been mentioned prominently during the Draft by the so called experts.

A new HC and new scheme would adversely affect any offense and the performance of its players. Sounds bad enough Virginia’s starting QB entered the transfer portal after the 2022 season. The program is a dumpster fire.

That, I believe, is non representative of the conditions under which Wicks had over 1200 yds for 21.1 ypc and 9 TDs in 2021.

Might be best now to ignore the drops and simply wait and see what Dontayvion does in TC & preseason.

We may have stole another one here.

I prefer ignoring media narratives if they ignore or fail to report underlying circumstances that change a player’s performance.

We see it all the time.

Yes, you watch his highlights and you would think he has round 1, or round 2 value. Very smooth athlete!

Agree, Knock. Pretty much all the goods we fans have been looking for. How many times can you see Dontayvion carrying 2 or 3 defenders before going down?

Friends here, watch his highlights from 2021. What a player. Nice pick from Gutekunst & his staff. Could prove another great Day 3 pick.

My notes:
Pick #159 WR Dontayvion Wicks - Virginia (19th WR taken, #145 Overall Daniel Jeremiah)
6-1 206 4.62, hands 10” (77%), wingspan 80” (87%), Vertical 39” (88%)

TOUGH. DYNAMIC. SEPARATION. FEET. FLUID. SIZE. EARLY ACCELERATION. FLEXIBLE. AGILE. RELEASE PACKAGE.

ELITE balance. +start/stop/burst. STRONG HANDS any NFL WR/Coach would covet. Plays fast & explosive. Stacks corners with speed to get behind them.

NUANCED route runner & release. Threatens stems with vertical push, opening everything in front of him. Varies pace nicely = deceptive. ELITE BALL SKILLS.

DOMINATES contested catches. Ultra competitive. Often dragging 3-4 defenders before going down.

2021 57 rec, 1201 yds. 21.1 ypc, 9 TD, QB Rating when targeted 128.5

*Changed HC & OC 2022 and had a very down season.

Concentration, eye exams/contacts, and practice practice practice will resolve any perceived issues with his hands. He obviously has elite athleticism to work with. He is going to become a good player for the GBP's & a fan favorite. Wanted him since pre-draft!

Wicks is going to look all world in shorts. He’s got everything you want in terms of athleticism (except truly great long speed). He will get open, run great routes, look like a beast and a steal. However, none of that matters if he doesn’t suddenly start to make catches consistently when the pads come on and he’s being challenged by defenders in game conditions. He will make highlight catches at times, he always has, but he is going to have to complete catches regularly for that to matter.

His down season in terms of the yardage is not the issue here, the catching is, and not merely last year. His catch per target rates stood out painfully on his team, over college football as a whole and in comparison to any Packers draft pick I recall, including Jones, Janis, J’mon More, MVS and certainly Adams. Yes, Jones and Adams put that behind them, but this is a different magnitude. Solve that and he will be a steal, but that’s a brave bet historically.
