McCarthy's Praise For Davante Adams Sounds Familiar
Just last summer, the Green Bay Packers head coach was saying similar things about another wide receiver.

Yesterday, Mike McCarthy was effusive with his praise of second year wide receiver Davante Adams.
I would say Davante Adams, if you wanted a clear illustration of a player taking a jump in his second year, you just saw it. He's been tremendous in OTA's and he has more in front of him. He's done a great job in strength and conditioning. If you picked a MVP or an All-Star, he'd be at the top of the list.
This adds to QB1s over-the-top praise for Adams just a few days prior, when Rodgers said Adams possessed "humongous upside," a quote that generated plenty of headlines around the NFL media echo chamber.
It's interesting stuff coming from the head coach and quarterback. But as usual, it's best taken with just a pinch of salt, especially when you go back just last summer when McCarthy had similar things to say about another young wide receiver.
From McCarthy last spring:
I can't say enough about Boykin. The young man is a heck of a player, he's done it the right way, special teams, he's performed every opportunity he's given.
And from McCarthy last August:
Clearly, Jarrett Boykin has taken the next step. I just love the way he plays. He's had an excellent camp.
He's physical, his toughness, he's relentless. I think he's exceptional at the top of his route. You see his strength and balance to separate from a DB.
As you may recall, Boykin's game fell off the proverbial cliff last season, resulting in the Packers allowing him to walk in free agency. He now plays for the Carolina Panthers.
Now, none of this is to say Adams doesn't posses the upside Rodgers says he does, or that Adams hasn't been working his tail off this offseason as Mike intimates. Far from it.
It is just your weekly reminder that it's June and very little of what is being talked about now in regards to OTAs and Mini-Camps has much bearing on what will happen once the season starts.

First off, Adams' athleticism > Boykin's athleticism
I still like Boykin. He just didn't make any plays in the limited amount of chances he was given.
Adam made more plays, but was also given way more opportunities.
We all know the talent is there. He proved that when Rodgers went down 2 seasons ago. It's unfortunate for him that we have capable WRs to step up the moment he doesn't.
I don't think Quarless would still be here if we had a standout TE.
I'm saying that to say I don't think what coach MM said about Boykin was inaccurate. Although Boykin had a horrible season. He also didn't get many opportunities.

Since Adams was a 2nd round draft pick, and Boykin was an UDFA, I sure hope Adams' athleticism is better than Boykin's....

Edit: Forgot Ben is a Vikings fan. Ben cherry picks the best times Boykins had at his pro day and at the combine and then compares them to Adams' combine numbers. Boykins had some good numbers in some categories. TT did acquire Boykins after all. TT wouldn't have if Boykins was w/o any talent. Links to workout numbers for Boykins and Davante:

Actually, I don't think that either MM or Rodgers are prone to wildly throwing praise towards players. The fact that both said good things about Boykin last year almost says more to me about Boykin's stunning drop than about MM and Rodgers.
I'm very intrigued by Rodgers' comments about Quarless. If Quarless is his usual mediocre self this year, then maybe I will start to temper my enthusiasm about Rodgers' comments.

I've said before that Adams is a boykin clone
like abbrederis is very much a cobb clone.
(in terms of being a good route runner, being a heady receiver, having reliable hands, being crafty in the open field and in the return game, and very much so in terms of speed, quickness, jumping ability.)

quarless is a pretty good all-around TE.
Richard Rogers is a joke in the blocking game and runs like offensive guard.
I can't wait till you homers come to the realization that Dix is not good and a liability in a number of ways.

Don't get me wrong though,
Rodgers is the best (but not greatest) football player in the history of football, at the now most influential position in the history of team sports. Clay Matthews is superb. And Peppers, Burnett, Shields, Hyde, Danials, Jordy, Cobb, Janis, Abbrederis, Bakhtiari, Sitton, Linsley, Lang, Bulaga, Barclay, Vujnovich, Lacey, & Raijon are all very good.
But TT has underperformed and hasn't been able to take advantage of the incredible fortune of The Aaron Rodgers falling into his lap. The Packer's can't help but compete, but their just probably not good enough to win the super-bowl or now even beat the Vikings in the NFC North.
I was a Huge Packer fan for 38 years and now a Viking fan for 3 months. I really like what the Vikings have going on the Defensive side of the ball. They'll be a top 6 defense this year and a top 3 defense next year. They have the greatest running back of the last 1/4 century, while the Packers have yet to address their decade old soft run-defense. (at the same time using 2nd round & 3rd round Picks on average players like Davonte Adams and Ty Montgomery while already having a proven capable #5! receiver in Jarret Boykin) The Vikings also finally have a competent player at the QB position with "brady-like" pocket awareness and movement. They also have some the most explosive big play guys in the entire league outside and on special-teams.
The mud-ducks will be unveiling their new stadium next year. They host the super-bowl 2 years from now. I think they will probably be hosting their 1st ever super-bowl championship. That will be pretty cool.
Don't worry though, you homers will be content with your 1 championship in 15 years with the best and most influential player to ever play the game.

You can forget all the combine stats and what you believe are current and future player limitations because WINNING IS THE ONLY THING per the coach whose name is on the Super Bowl Trophy. In that regard Ted Thompson has gotten his NFL team to 6 straight playoffs matched only by the New England Patriots - and Ted did it above board which makes the Packers #1 and the Pat's #1b over that time period. Based on a collection of your posts the only more truthful thing I have heard in recent years is "If you like your Doctor you can keep your Doctor, if you like you Plan you can keep your Plan - PERIOD".

I think it's important to point out that this doesn't mean MM was blowing smoke up anyone's arse last year when talking about Boykin.
Boykin's previous year, he looked like a player poised to blow up and really make an impact- he got separation and was often a fingertip away from breaking away for a large gain. Watching him play, he was a guy who could make plays with the ball in his hands and maneuver in traffic. He had an excellent work ethic in practices and games.
What happened to Boykin last season? One of the biggest mysteries to me. He simply fell apart, and I think that was a huge anomaly that nobody on that team saw coming.

Well, I have no way of knowing whether MM was blowing smoke when speaking about Boykin. Guess I see no reason why he would do that. So, assuming that MM was sincere, to me it means that TC and preseason games are all well and good, but one only knows what one has when you have seen them in real NFL games. Of course, there could have been some off the field personal issue that shattered Boykin's confidence, or distracted him, etc.
