Packers Pass on Tendering WR Jarrett Boykin

Boykin becomes a free agent, able to sign with any NFL team of his choosing.

Wide receiver Jarrett Boykin has not been offered a restricted free agent tender by the Green Bay Packers, making him a free agent and free to sign with any team he chooses.

The lowest tender possible is worth roughly $1.5 million for one year, giving the tendering team the right of first refusal, allowing them to match any offer the player might receive.

It's possible the Packers could sign Boykin back for an amount lower than the tender, but it's also possible they are cutting ties, especially in light of recently re-signing Randall Cobb to a long-term contract.

Boykin was one of the bigger disappointments of the 2014 season for the Green Bay Packers, catching just three passes for 23 yards on the season and being passed up by rookie Davante Adams on the depth chart.

The previous season, Boykin was one of the breakout stars, making 49 receptions for 681 yards and three touchdowns. Most of those catches, however, came without Aaron Rodgers at quarterback after missing about half the season due to a broken collarbone. The two never displayed a great rapport.

After taking drafting three wide receivers in last year's NFL Draft, it would appear the Packers have given a higher priority to developing their young talent, including Jared Abbrederis and Jeff Janis.

According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Boykin refused to give interviews to the media at one point last season, perhaps an indication of dissatisfaction.

The two other restricted free agents on the Packers roster—offensive linemen Don Barclay and safety Sean Richardson—both received the lowest, right of first refusal tender.

Boykin forced two fumbles on special teams last season.

Boykin never had a chance of being tendered. Barclay and Richardson were tendered, which I view that as okay, if a little pricey. I probably wouldn't have tendered Richardson, but maybe GB thinks he can play STs at a high level and see if he can actually play some position. Barclay, if healthy, probably deserves to be tendered.
