McCarthy: Tramon Williams Is Better Today Than He Was Yesterday

The Packers cornerback was listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Panthers.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy met with the media on Friday for the final time in advance of the upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers.

Here are select quotes from his press conference:

  • On Tramon Williams and his ankle injury: We're still working No. 1. We're still going through the process, but he's better today than he was yesterday.
  • On Williams and his questionable game status: I think tomorrow will be the biggest indication, obviously with us going to the practice field. As i sated, we'll give Tramon Williams every opportunity to play.
  • On Williams: Tramon Williams definitely very durable, a very impressive athlete in strength and conditioning. … I don't think there was any question when we got back here on Monday that he was going to do everything in his power to play.
  • On the status of Sam Shields: Couldn't tell you. He's getting better, though.
  • On Sam Shields' awkward knee injury: He pivoted on it, obviously a knee strain. … It gave out on him.
  • On Brad Jones: Brad Jones did some really good things. As we state all the time, Brad Jones has played a lot of games for us. We're going to play more than 11. …. He'll definitely play in the game.
  • On Datone Jones: I'm a little surrised by the path. He's struggling laterally right now, and until he gets that back, it doesn't make sense to push forward.
  • On J.C. Tretter practicing: I thought he did some really good things in the padded work. … It was great to have him out there. He looks good.
  • On Tretter's versatility: I think J.C. has the ability to play multiple positions, no doubt about it.
  • On depth at center: Center position I feel very good about. Garth has done good things for us. He's been steady. … I think we have excellent depth at that center position.
  • On the Packers proving themselves against a good opponent: It's Week 7, we're trying to win our fifth game. That's the focus. Who determines who's a really good team? The statistics? All I know is this is a really good team coming in here. … These are two really good football teams trying to prove their records.
  • On the Packers' quality of play: Let's be honest, quality of play is never what you want. … We're not at the level of excellence, and it takes a full season. … Your preparation leads to performance, and if Wednesday's and Thursday's performance are any indication, I think we'll take a step forward.
  • On defending the read-option: That's really what happens to you in a week preparation. We've had excessive reps against the read-option, particularly in our padded practice. … (Cam Newton is) a different athlete when he runs the football. … There's more to their offense than just the read-option. … Let's make sure we're getting ready for the rest of their offense.
  • On which quarterback imitates Newton in practice: They split it. … Matt Flynn ran more quarterback power plays than anyone I've seen at that point. That and the bubble screen.
  • On improvement in the red zone: Really when you have a season like we did, any situation, offense, defense or speical teams, you feel like you have to emphasize it. We're spending some more time on the red zone…. More time and energy was spent on it in the offseason.
  • On the Packers' new practice schedule this season: I like it. It's okay. The players love it, so that's a good thing. Fridays are a little distorted for me personally. … We're spending more times as groups. We're having more positions spending time together.  …. The theory of quality over quantity is working. … We've been hitting the targets. Our preparation has been good.
