General Info:

If Luke Musgrave’s name sounds a little familiar to you, it may be because of his uncle—Bill Musgrave was star quarterback for the Oregon Ducks in the late 80s and early 90s and had a five year career as a player in the NFL, where he has been coaching since 1997. While Luke didn’t follow his uncle’s footsteps into becoming a Duck, he is an Oregonian through-and-through, born and raised in Bend before heading to Corvallis to star for the Beavers. In high school, Luke was a letterwinning athlete in Lacrosse, as well as a track runner and ski racer, in addition to his decorated high school football career.

Coming out of high school, Musgrave was listed as a composite three-star recruit by 247Sports, the 37th overall TE in the 2019 recruiting class, and the 5th overall Oregonian. He only received offers from Oregon and Oregon State, choosing the latter because it was “…[Musgrave’s] dream school…”

As a true freshman, Musgrave appeared in all 12 of Oregon State’s games, with one start, but only caught two passes (both in the same game). His sophomore season, the Covid shortened season of 2020, saw a step forward, as he caught 12 passes for 142 yards over the course of the Beaver’s seven games that year. The 2021 season displayed further progress for Musgrave, who started nine of 13 games and had 22 catches for 304 yards and the first TD of his college career. Prior to his final season, Musgrave was named to the Mackey Award Watch List, and started the season in incredible fashion, recording 11 catches for 169 yards and a score in the Beavers’ first two games. Unfortunately, those would be the only games Musgrave appeared in, as he suffered a knee injury and missed the rest of the season.

Despite his limited snaps (only one full season as the Beaver’s primary starting TE), Musgrave declared for the draft after the season, and is seen as a potential day one pick. During Senior Bowl practices, Musgrave was frequently cited as one of the top performers, and reinforced that during the Combine with very strong measurables in the Broad Jump, Vertical Jump, and 40 Yard Dash.

Positional Skills:

Strengths

Prototypical size for a Tight End.

Really excellent athleticism in general. He was named to Bruce Feldman’s annual “Freaks List” and his multi-disciplinary (and somewhat unique) athletic background shows.

While I think the idea of “NFL Bloodlines” are a little silly, for a cerebral position like Tight End, having an NFL-caliber offensive coach in the family certainly is a boon.

Really started to come into his own this season. Would probably have had a MONSTER year, had he not suffered the knee injury.

Reliable hands—and showed some contested catch ability. He should be a good receiving TE in the NFL.

Versatile. Should be the type of TE that you can stick in the slot or in-line and feel comfortable.

Weaknesses

While there are explanations—Covid, the injury, and the inconsistency of Oregon State’s offense the last few seasons—Musgrave’s lack of snaps and experience is definitely a little concerning. His best season as a receiver was just 304 yards, which was also the only season he played more than 350 snaps for the Beavers.

Still needs work as a blocker. He tends to get high in blocks, which can result in being overpowered pretty quickly.

Much of his receiving production came on seams and block-and-releases in the flat; he’ll need to show he is capable of being productive in intermediate areas of the field.

Does not play through contact well; he is not as explosive as one might hope, and may struggle against more physical coverage, particularly when trying to get off the line.

Fit with the Packers:

With only one TE (Josiah Deguara) under contract for next season, right now there is a definite path to playing time for a rookie Tight End with the Packers. Musgrave could potentially see early snaps as a receiver, though his middling blocking ability will certainly keep him from being an every-down player early on. Additionally, Tight End is infamously one of the most difficult positions when it comes to transitioning to the NFL, so with any rookie TE, there is a real chance that they just will not be productive early on. Musgrave’s athletic ability is enticing though, and while he may be a bit boom-or-bust as a prospect, there is immense potential, and he could easily become a premier TE in the NFL. His best fit is probably a team with an established TE1 that Musgrave can sit behind and contribute rotationally for a bit—similar to what the Eagles did with Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert (the latter of whom is a popular comp for Musgrave). However, if the Packers like Musgrave, I could see them spending a high draft pick on him and bringing in a vet (maybe resigning Marcedes Lewis) to make sure they can focus on his development. I think it is unlikely Musgrave makes it to Green Bay’s second pick, and their current first-rounder might be a little rich, but if the Pack trades back into the 20s, Musgrave could be a home-run selection.

Luke Musgrave and Darnell Washington are my top two in late 1st or top to mid 2nd. Hope they are both there whenever the Packers pick. I waffle on both Musgrave and Washington as who to get first. Would love to double dip and get both. Not as big on Kincaid as others. Would like the Packers to get a TE a little bit bigger with same ability. Also, never that big on Myers as some. He looked too slow to get separation and was a contested catch TE type too much. He is going to have to rely on open spaces to get open in the NFL. He may end up being great at that, but I'd like a guy that can create his own separation.

Also Zack Kuntz is my draft crush late day two into day three. I think he goes higher than people expected. Had great year before he got hurt. The boo birds will point to Old Dominion. Same as Watson at NDS. Same as it ever was. I was high on him before combine. I hope Packers get a shot at him as well, especially if they only get one of Musgrave or Washington.

[Edit] If I really had to pick two, I'd go with Darnell Washington early and Zack Kuntz later. Two 6'7" guys with loads of athletic ability that showed serious flashes of big plays and tower over even the biggest DB's. Use them in some two TE sets and pound the ball. They both have the size and strength to move DE/LBs easily. Also use in RPO's in short mis-direction crossers in the red zone / short yardage. The quickness is there. Packers need to design some plays to get TEs involved again.

Moo,
You are thinking along very similar lines as myself. Washington and one of Kincaid or Musgrave would be a blessing. I am in total agreement about Kuntz!

My only other consideration would be Quentin Johnston. If Quentin than one of Kincaid, Washington, or Musgrave. I'd probably say Washington and pick up say Laport in round 2.

The Packers need two TE's in 2023 to be added thru the draft. The good thing is they can draft one high and still can get another pretty good TE on Day 2.

Nice article. I’m no pro scout but Musgrave’s highlight reel shows him going down on first contact on every play. Seriously, like every single one! He definitely has the athletic profile that GB favors, but that alone would cause me to rank other prospects above him.

With his size and workout numbers, I wonder if Darnell Washington might be a dark horse pick at 15. Although he’s on the slower side, I still like the chalk pick of Mayer as TE1. That type of size and production translates well to the pro game, where GB will likely run the ball more (and benefit from solid TE blocking) with Love under center. I like MooPack’s suggestion of drafting two.

Darnell Washington doesn't though... ; ) (Go down at 1st contact I mean...)

Washington is on the slower side? 4.64? At 6' 7" and 264 LBS? Lol... You sir have very high expectations...

I too would love to see us draft two decent TEs, but since we haven't in forever, I think we're due...

Good One!

I'm all for another President Washington... Worked out rather well for us the first time.

Don't get me started on Brandon... ; P

Not Washington, I meant that Mayer is on the slower side. Although if he ran just 2-3 HUNDREDTHS of a second faster, the media would be telling us that he “checked all the boxes.” Who knows, that could happen at his pro day.

It will be interesting to see if BG relaxes some of his athletic thresholds to draft highly productive players at positions of need like Mayer, Brian Branch, or one of the receivers. Could this be the year that he settles for a RAS of 7 instead of 9.99?

Pete Dougherty always quotes a mentor of his who told him that “the team is probably thinking the exact opposite of what you’re thinking.” That showed up in the last few years with them drafting Quay Walker, Eric Stokes and Jordan Love. So, what’s the shocking pick this year? RB, QB, another CB? Or maybe someone like Darnell Washington (or another player) who every draft pundit has going in the second round? I’m preparing for the unexpected by finding something I like about every player!!!

Musgrave is propped up by name recognition. Very little production @ Oregon State and a couple of significant injuries.
The most complete is Mayer, regardless of his 40 timing. Kincaid is proficient in the receiving game like Tonyan and the guy likely to appear in rd two for the Pack is Tucker Kraft a guy similar to Mayer, but more RAC.
Kinciad and Washington were not the best TEs on their college squads. If I want a blocker , I would look to later rounds for Schoonmaker and Averett, Ben Sims.

Jannes,
I thought Tucker Kraft looked pretty good. Wondering if he might last into the 3rd round somewhere though?

Will have to be taken in round two. He may not even make it to #45 if there is a run on these guys?

He can get better as a blocker in the pros, but my concern is with his yards after contact ability. Whenever I've watched him he always seems to go down at the first tackle; he doesn't break many tackles.

Remember Richard Rodgers? I'm not sure he broke 5 tackles the whole time he played for us... Lol

I like Washington, with our second round pick and Zach Kunz in the 5th round. Washington's combine may push him into the 1st round, though. I've seen another mock where Mayer went in the second round. That's where I'd take him. Two TEs in this draft would be good for GB. Washington or Mayer and Kunz would be good picks for the Packers.

Assuming the Packers get a #1 from the jets in a trade for Rodgers. I would love to see them take an Edge with the Jets pick, either Van Ness or Murphy. Take JNS at receiver with their pick at #15. Take the safety from Illinois in the 2nd and grab a TE in the 3rd and 5th. The depth at Tight End is great in this years draft, but the positional value doesn't make it a great option to use a mid 1st on the position. They need to surround Love with more weapons and JNS was the best receiver on Ohio State in 2021, which is saying a lot as the other 2 both went in the 1st round last year. Plus he has elite change of direction for a slot receiver.
