Last Year’s First Round Picks Off to a Good Start for Packers

The Green Bay Packers had two first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. Both players saw the field as rookies with inconsistent results. But in their second NFL season, both inside linebacker Quay Walker and defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt look to have taken a significant step forward in their development.

Walker became an immediate starter for the Packers last season. Inside linebacker was an area of extreme need as the Packers were searching for someone to start opposite De’Vondre Campbell.

Walker won the starting job early in training camp. He possesses outstanding speed and athleticism for an off-ball linebacker. That allows him to cover the field from sideline to sideline and even to run down ball carriers on the other side of the field.

Like most rookies, Walker had an up and down first NFL season. He did lead the Packers in tackles with 121. The Georgia alum recorded 1.5 sacks, forced three fumbles, and broke up seven passes.

Still, he had his struggles as well. Early in the season, Walker had difficulty reading running plays. He would vacate his assigned gap and run himself out of the play, leaving a large hole for the runner to exploit.

He also struggled with his temper and was twice ejected from games for making contact with non-players long after the action had stopped. In one incident, he hit a practice squad player after the whistle. The second ejection came when he hit an opposing team’s trainer in the season finale with a playoff spot on the line.

Walker knew he had to keep his temper in check to take his game to the next level and he worked on it during the offseason. He felt he let his team down by being ejected from key games.

In the season opener last week in Chicago, Walker was much better at recognizing running plays. He made four total tackles including one for loss. He also broke up one pass.

But he also made a very big play that helped clinch the win for the Packers. Walker picked off a pass by Justin Fields and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown. That put the Pack ahead 38-14.

Defensive coordinator Joe Barry also said Walker will be used to blitz the quarterback at times this season. It makes sense to do that given the speed Walker brings to the table. He blitzed once in Week 1 but figures to do more of it in the coming weeks, especially when facing quarterbacks who are less of a threat to run with the ball than Fields.

The Packers used their second pick in the first-round last year on defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt. Unlike his former college teammate, Walker, Wyatt didn’t start any games in his first NFL season. Late in the season, he started to see the field more, especially after Dean Lowry suffered a season-ending injury.

Wyatt played only 23 percent of the Packers defensive snaps in the 16 games he played. He made 15 total tackles and recorded 1.5 sacks on the season. Wyatt also broke up one pass and forced a fumble. Late in the season, the former Georgia star showed some of the quickness and skills that made him a first-round pick.

This season, Wyatt looked much more comfortable in the defense from the start of training camp. He knew where he had to be and what he had to do on every play. Wyatt had a strong training camp and preseason and earned a starting job in the season opener.

During the Week 1 win over Chicago, Wyatt made three total tackles including two tackles for loss. Wyatt also recorded 1.5 quarterback sacks, matching his entire total for the previous season. He was also credited with three quarterback pressures.

Wyatt appeared quick and was able to beat offensive linemen and get into the backfield on several occasions. He graded out well according to Pro Football Focus and was in the top 15 percent of all qualified defensive linemen in Week 1.

The Packers defense is playing a more aggressive scheme this season and the speed and skill sets of Walker and Wyatt are one reason Barry feels comfortable making these changes. The Packers are relying on both these second-year men to be key players on defense this season.

Hopefully good news is on the way regarding Quay's status for this game. We'll need him to stuff their backs and cover those short routes/throws the Falcons may be attempting to get away with.

I never really doubted Wyatt's ability to make an impact on the DL; all he needed was a chance. The Packers waited too long to give him extended playing time.

Yes, meanwhile Lowry has been showing why Wyatt should have played earlier. We seem very loathe to change players once they are anointed on all sides of the ball. Amari, Hanson, Watkins, Lowry are all examples of players that we kept playing despite obvious issues and alternatives. Myers seems to potentially be the most salient current example.

Conversely Nixon, Wyatt, Slaton, Tom and others were sitting. Perhaps today Nijman/Walker/Jones and perhaps even AJJ and Wilson (a tad early but tomorrow it may not be) are siting when we might be better with them than what we have.

There’s no smokescreen of Rodgers presence now that can be claimed as the reason. If players are not cutting it, then it’s time to risk getting a little worse immediately to get better. If nothing else it’s a wake up call and at best it’s an immediate improvement. We tend to wait for injuries or Gute to force it (Watkins and Amari).

None of the first group mentioned should have made the cut in 2022. When management stands in quicksand you don'r win when it counts. Lowry was consistently being pushed off the LOS by 3-4 yards in Thursday's game.

From what I understand Wyatt had issues picking up the defense. Even though Lowry was getting pushed back, it was viewed as better overall than Wyatt not being where he should be. Basically giving up an 8 yard run was better than a 45 yard TD run because Wyatt screwed up.

Until they played him and he was an upgrade. Yes, that’s the excuse. It may have initially have been genuine. It wasn’t by the time Injury forced them to replace Lowry.

"The Packers waited too long to give him extended playing time." That's been a common practice - Zach Tom on the bench last year while Royce Newman was starting and getting embarrassed for several weeks. Amari returning punts for at least 6 weeks too long before someone finally figured out he was hurting us badly every week.

It's great to have both these young men starting and making a difference; but it is frustrating to see our coaches slow in getting the best personnel on the field. They seem to give certain mediocre and even failing players and coaches in recent years extended opportunities even when it has been obviously detrimental to the team.

Why Jake Hanson was on this roster for 3 years, and why Royce Newman is still on this roster, is beyond me.

Wyatt is a guy who was drafted to replace Lowry, and was given some time to develop, and when he was ready to play more he did. He looks like he’s improved in a year.

Walker got directly thrown into the fire and made some mistakes. Teams went after him. If he stays in control he could go a long way towards closing that hole in the middle about 20 deep. Ever since Freddie Mitchell in 2003, we’ve given up some big completions right there, often off of crossing patterns like the one he picked

Yeah, not sure about all the fans here agreeing with the writer.

Wyatt played extremely poorly and got few chances early, with most of that 23% coming late in the season. Even if you extrapolate to 3 times those numbers and 70% of the snaps, they aren't super great numbers (45 tackles and 5 sacks, assuming not a 3 times rise in passes defended or fumbles caused).

The numbers this year do extrapolate to very big numbers. Other teams won't be able to pick whom to double team on this D Line and it's also going to lead to a lot of hurries and sacks spread around a group of pretty good pass rushes with depth. I expect more against less mobile QBs, but the scheme and talent managed to harass the most mobile QB pretty effectively. Even against good O Lines, this front should open things up for playmakers (when they aren't making plays themselves).

45 tackles and 5 sacks is actually pretty good for an IDL.

When both first round picks were used on defensive players, TV "experts" highly criticized the Packers organization for not taking a wide receiver. As it turns out, we seem to have added two solid defensive starters and I like the wide receivers we added in rounds two and four. Both Watson and Dobbs appear to be players who will start and produce for years to come. Good draft by the Packers organization in spite of what the "experts" have to say.

I wish Doubs would change it to Dobbs. Makes it easier for us. At least we don't have to try to spell Marquez-Valdez-Scantling or Equanimiouonuouous St. Brown anymore.

I struggled with spelling in grade school and as the years have passed I've regressed. Thanks for the help.

Walker's pick-six was fantastic, but I'm not sure he had a good game aside from that. It seemed like there were some running plays where maybe he was not filling the right gap. Maybe someone who re-watched the game can chime in on this one. I'd appreciate it.

I have little doubt that Wyatt really played as well as he appeared to play.

Wahle pointed to a few times he wished Walker would have been more physical at the LOS. It did seem like a couple of the longer runs were to his side. The TD was great but the 92 grade from PFF seems very high. Low 80s would make more sense IMO.
