Please be aware that my "hypothetical roster" makes several assumptions, as I attempt to explain them. It is not official by any means.

Roster sizes this season in the NFL are 90 players, and the Packers are currently exactly at 90 players: 64 veterans under contract, 10 draft choices and 16 undrafted rookies. I've assumed all the rookies have either signed or will sign.

Since the Packers haven't publicly announced the release of any players yet, I've counted players like Nick Barnett, Brandon Chillar, Justin Harrell and Brady Poppinga as still being on the roster.

I also haven't counted Mason Crosby as being on the roster even though he's reportedly agreed on a contract with the Packers. Teams can start officially signing players at 5:01 p.m. Central time this evening.

If it's true that the Packers will be releasing the four players that have been reported they'll release, that will open up four roster spots to sign free agents.

Crosby will obviously be one of them.

Out of the players that haven't agreed to terms with other teams, that leaves Cullen Jenkins, James Jones, John Kuhn Matt Wilhelm and Anthony Smith as the only players left who were with the Packers last year. The Packers could only sign three out of those five without having to cut someone else (and it's highly unlikely Jenkins will be back in Green Bay).

So from the looks of things, it's pretty much cut and dried who will be on the roster and who won't. Any thoughts that the Packers might go out and sign a free agent inside linebacker look slim, unless they want to make another roster cut on top of who's been reported to be leaving already.

UPDATE: Reports are that the Packers will not re-sign Matt Wilhelm.
