I like that they kept six DLs, especially Stackhouse.

I don't like that they kept only four LBs. You figured they might keep Welch after releasing Simmons, but the Packers simply don't value players without big upside, real or imagined. And aside from the specialists, it's no wonder the special teams never improve.

Very surprised at the back end of the CB room; better hope the top three guys stay healthy. Hadden has played 7 ST snaps, and Robinson is a total question mark. I wouldn't be surprised with an acquisition here.

I'm pretty much spot-on with your assessment. I thought Kalen King would've been a better choice than either Hadden or Robinson at CB. But that's why they don't pay me the big bucks!

Robinson is intriguing and the only true perimeter cover type of the 3 and is considerably faster than either. I thought he would be a PS target or on the roster if they wanted more depth on the perimeter and like him more from practice than we have seen in games (since he was rarely targeted).

I agree with Coldworld's assessment. Robinson provides that extra-upside, in the Packer's eyes. Every year the Packers stock one or 2 guys on the team and inactivate or don't play them for most games. For reference, I had King making the team due to slot needs, which they must feel Hadden is better.

Fingers crossed.

I really wish they had kept this guy instead of that guy. Maybe they still plan to trade for that other guy. Management is consistently screwing this up. The coaches need to coach up this awful roster, but they are terrible. It look like another year of coming up short in that one area. The other teams all got better while we regressed.

what's the point of your comment?? how did "all" the other teams get better? Detroit lost both of their top coordinators, how's that getting better? minnesota lost their starting and backup quarterback and now rely on a rookie, how's that better? you could make a case that Chicago got better but until that's shown on the field we really don't know. We lost Jaire, but little else so i'm not sure how you come up with any of this... unless your really just be sarcastic.

I’m always an overly optimistic homer, so I thought I’d try going the other way for once. I studied the genre from some of the CHTV posters but couldn’t trouble myself with actually coming up with strong opinions on guys who are mainly going to be healthy scratches. Therefore, I posted in generalities. Anyone can feel free to use the template in the future. You’re welcome.

Hey, man. the point of the comment is it's Doug_in_MF_Sandpoint. He needs no other point than that to post whatever flickers between his mighty ears. The fact that you feel you can waltz in here with your double question marks, piss-poor grammar, and ellipsis-use crimes against humanity looking to jack-up a tried and true original is just silly.

I feel Melton could play both ways.
And Kept Simmons.
He'll be gone when Watson's ready.
6 DL- good call, for now.

Simmons bottom salary is too much for what he brings, his days in the league may be over. Melton isn't a super talent, he is a versatile athlete but I don't think him splitting time is good for anyone. The roster will change before we get to the weekend.

Melton is a pure slot like Reed. I think Heath has limitations but also offers the capability to fill away from the slot beyond primarily blocking. With both Watson and Williams and possibly Wicks out, there not much in the way of physical WR options opposite Doubs. Melton could help for Reed (if Golden can’t be spared) , but then who steps in at X? Until Watson returns, Heath’s retention makes sense to me. By then, of course, other injuries may change things.

Based on what? I went back and watched all of his 2023 highlights after reading your comment and only 3 of his catches were from the slot. He was outside on every other one. Seems odd for a pure slot.

Because he was usually filling in. He was behind Reed and very similar and other WRs also play slot snaps in our O. Look at his production and look at where he played when he showed up in the stat sheet the year before. Melton would play anywhere, to his credit, but where he fitted best is as a slot.

The biggest surprise for me was that they kept six CBs. I was actually leaning more toward four than six. Also surprising that Kalen King was NOT one of the six. He looked pretty good in the preseason games. Only four LBs is another surprise. If they had kept Kalen King and Kristian Welch and cut Kamal Hadden and Micah Robinson, the roster would've been pretty much exactly as a lot of people expected.

I like that they kept these 4 TEs – it’s a very solid group

I don’t know how well Jennings OL did this pre-season…so am not sure of his long-term prospects but going with 8 OL would’ve been risky.

Picking nits…I wonder what the rationale is/was for keeping CB Robinson over LB Welch – given that Bullard (1 of 5 safeties) will play slot anyway, right?

All in all, though…if we’re quibbling about bits and pieces in just a few spots, I guess that means it’s a strong roster…or at least as good as it’s going to be.

The two hop-alongs (Lloyd and Watson) will likely automatically have roster spots when they’re ready as some of the 53 may get injured. Just the way it goes.

Overall, we got through the pre-season without any nasty, unexpected injuries to key players. I never assume that’s the case.

CB is simply a more valuable/specialized position. Guessing this was more about protecting both.

King was a surprise cut to me, but, I think Hadden will bring more upside over time.

Looking at Detroit's roster and pre-season, they have been a bit more dinged up:

Season-Ending Injuries (Placed on Injured Reserve):

Levi Onwuzurike (DT): Out for the 2025 NFL season with an ACL tear. This is a significant blow to the defensive line.

Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (CB): The rookie has a season-ending shoulder injury that required surgery.

Dan Jackson (S): The rookie suffered a season-ending leg injury during training camp.

Ezekiel Turner (LB), Justin Herron (G), Colby Sorsdal (G), Kenny Yeboah (TE): These players have all been placed on injured reserve, ending their 2025 seasons.

Players on Reserve/PUP or NFI Lists (Will Miss at Least the First Four Games):

Alim McNeill (DT): Placed on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, he will miss at least the first four games of the season.

Josh Paschal (DE): Placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury (NFI) list, he is also expected to miss at least the first four games of the season.

Miles Frazier (OG) and Malcolm Rodriguez (LB): Both players have also been placed on the Reserve/PUP list.

Well congrats on the Jacob Monk to the DFR-IR call you had earlier, Al!! I had this wrong. To me it's interesting that Sorrell was not on this list, because his injury was reportedly similar to Lloyd's. Regardless, I would not be surprised if your "FOR NOW" statement doesn't have another DFR designation or two shortly.

Only that he seemed to say it was mild. It all depends on the severity. If it was mild, 4-6 weeks. He’s probably 2 in already, so 3/4 before week one. They might just leave him as a game day inactive if that’s the timeline.

Why keep 7 DTs and 5 DEs? You usually only play 4 at one time. Weird. And only 4 LBs? I guess LBs never get injured. Oh wait, just about all of them were injured at some point last year. Gute has some strange ideas.

IMO, the Packers are protecting their rookie DTs and young DBs at the expense of LB, for one. As I stated earlier, teams were trying out CBs and, of course, Douglas was signed. So it makes sense. The only way I see any waiver claim would be to replace an Olineman, perhaps TE at this point. The more clear probability is for a another DFR-IR which opens a roster spot, but I see Welch, Sims, or Baldwin filling this opening.

I'll be watching what happens with the following players to see what develops with their injures:

Banks, Anderson, Sorrell, Reed, Wicks, & S Williams.

WR Practice squad additions may be important and have an opportunity to play this month.

The fact that they kept 6 CB's and only 4 LB's absolutely terrifies me unless they plan to run nickel ~90% of the time and I really question who is playing special teams. I really hope Welch doesn't go on to another team, all he ever does is produce in games. Hadden and Robinson over King and Ballentine is as confusing to the rest of us as it gets. Keeping Jacob Monk when he couldn't even win the backup C position and was even worse when he played G is also a big question mark. 6 receivers is cool and 4 TE's will come in handy, but who are we having return punts and kicks..... Aaaaand why is Greg Joseph listed here.........

After reading through the list of cuts across the league, 2 names got my attention were Chris Paul jr and Luke kandra. Paul as a fifth lb would be great. Kandra could be iol depth. I thought Luke lachey from Iowa would've been nice Musgrave insurance too.

3 or 4 guys I'd like to see GB claim on waivers are TE Josh Whyle from Tennessee, CB Damarri Mathis and RB Audric Estime from Denver and Edge Nate Lynn from Detroit. Not sure who they replace but i would cut Simms and Hadden and place Zayne Anderson and Barryn Sorrell on ir-return.
