Gut Reactions: Packers beat Raiders

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers 42-24 win over the Raiders

  • Aaron Charles Rodgers is an MVP candidate
  • I mean, what a freaking game from 12
  • One of these days, he's actually going hit MVS in stride.
  • Marquez Reshard Valdes-Scantling is fast.
  • Danny Vitale is a weapon in the passing game.
  • Nice hustle play by Martinez to cause the Carr fumble, which was the turning point of the game.
  • Sweet atonement for the early drop by Allen Lazard. What an incredible catch in the 3rd quarter.
  • Jimmy Graham made someone miss!
  • Tough day at the office for Blake Martinez
  • The offensive line was absolutely outstanding today. Rodgers had clean pockets all day.
  • It was only a matter of time until we witnessed Touchdown Jesus. Hallelujah.
  • The Packers had no answer for Darren Waller. None.
  • This team needs Darnell Savage back in a big way.
  • Rodgers standing in the pocket and delivering a strike for a first down, knowing he was going to get clobbered. That's the stuff.
  • Pretty incrdible to see Rodgers put up the numbers he did today with a banged up and inexperienced supporting cast.
  • Speaking of that supporting cast, the work they are getting now is going to pay off big time down the stretch later this season.
  • The dance the defense did after the King interception just made my heart sing.
  • I love this football team.
  • Go Pack.

The D is not a concern... they had a good game despite giving up yards. Call it a bad game if you want... It happens. Still not a concern.

"get with the team or STFU" is awfully close to "If you're not a blind homer, you're not a fan".

I don't think the D is really a concern personally, but I can see why some fans might. Lots of lost coverage. uncontested completions, and a few big runs allowed.

I personally see the defense as resilient and they seem to come up with the big stops when they need them.. but there is room for improvement and there are things that could be a concern.

Goodson and Martinez are liabilities in coverage. Redmond was hesitant on his tackling which is understandable for a guy barely cracking 187# at the safety spot. Martine has to pick up his game and reads.

Redmond also drove a few guys straight into the turf today with picture perfect form tackles like he was shot out of a cannon.

Martinez definitely is not a great cover LB.

Why is the defense a concern??? They had a goal line stand and a pick in the end zone during the 4th quarter when it mattered the most. They could be better against the run but it didn't matter today. They were 25 points ahead with less than 2 minutes to play. I'll take that every week. Thanks, Since '61

Wow. D gives up a lot of yardage, but not much scoring. Very opportunistic but, man, we gotta get better in coverage. Red zone has been awesome though. And this O is getting really fun to watch. Almost feel sorry for the rest of the league when Davante gets back.

Special teams still aren’t doing it. Haven’t seen much improvement there and I hope it doesn’t end up hurting us somewhere down the line.

I think that the Adams injury ends up helping this team. QB1 is spreading the ball around and everyone is getting in on the action. AR is gaining trust with most everyone on the roster. LOVE THIS TEAM!

Agreed, return and return coverage teams are a huge liability. If they don't fix that I predict it costs them a game at some point. I pray it's not a playoff game. Shepherd is gun shy on punt returns or else he's been told to fair catch it no matter how much room he has. And they should just take the touchback on every kick-off return.

That said, I don't want to be a negative Nancy: great game by the offense, great to see the young receivers getting some productive reps while Adams heals, and beautiful use of the backs and TE in the passing game. Great block by Jones on the MVS TD! This offense will be dangerous once Adams gets back if they can keep everyone else healthy.

WR is a really banged up group. Great that they were able limit both MVS and GeMo snaps, coming off the concussion protocol I wonder how close they came to holding him out today. Important that Jimmy Graham? (I can never spell that guy name right) played today, much like the old Graham (Ugh) of four years ago. Both TE had excellent games today, but the group is really thin. Have to wait for injury report..

Lare the Packers gave up 17 points and had a goal line stand and an end zone pick in the 4th quarter to protect the lead, which was as high as 25 points before the garbage time TD. Capers D would have made that game much closer than it should have been. I'll take today's result every week. Thanks, Since '61

And give credit to the other team, the came in with a game plan to use 2-3 tight ends. I believe 3 different TEs caught passes. That raiders team came i with a good plan to use all the TEs and slow down the GB pass rush. Im not concerned about the D. The Raiders had a good plan.

I disagree, 61.

When Rodgers is let to play, he holds the ball and gets tunnel vision on his preferred targets at the expense of taking what the defense is providing in progression.

It's why things were the way they were for the last many years- MM's sin was letting Rodgers do whatever he wanted. It's why run/pass balance was skewed, and it's why the ball wasn't coming out on time.

What we're seeing here is Rodgers actually starting to play within a system and being held accountable.. IMO, of course.

Oppy, not to argue the point but you and I have been around here for a long time and I always read your posts because your posts are always good. However, I honestly don't remember you or other posters complaining about Rodgers holding the ball too long when the Packers ran the table (8-0) in 2016 until the NFCCG in Atlanta. Or in 2017 when we were 4-1 before Rodgers was injured.

That "hold the ball narrative" began last season and was the result of a second losing season which included AR playing through injuries, weak interior line play and a poor defense in most games.

As for MM did he really have a choice but to leave the games in Rodger's hands especially in 2016, '17 and '18? He knew his defense was not very good. He knew he needed to score as many points as possible every week. So yes, he gave Aaron a mostly free hand. But after years of poor drafting and numerous injuries the wheels fell off completely in 2018 even with Rodgers back from his 2017 injury.

Now Rodgers is settling into the offense and so are at least some of the receivers including J. Graham and the RBs. It just proves what we already knew. Which is that Winning changes everything for the better and losing. makes everything worse. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Since 61,Not argumentative, just matter of fact-ly:

I have been vocal about Rodgers holding the ball too long for years.

I have been vocal about people claiming the WR's aren't open (when the tape shows there are, indeed, open targets that Rodgers ignored)

Recently, Jersey Al had a post about Rodgers not utilizing the middle of the field- I have been aware of that trend- and posted about it- years ago.

I have always believed, and still believe, that Rodgers talent is unquestioned. However, I have been critical of how he has applied that talent since roughly 2015. My posts are out there.

For what it's worth, I read and respect all of your content as well. You're on my "must read" list. We just happen to disagree on a few points, and that's okay. .. But I've been out ahead of the media criticism of Rodgers by a few seasons. I've been reading between the lines and watching closely. My assessment of Rodgers is my own, right or wrong, agree or disagree.

Oppy, your observations are very much like my own -- although my observations are more like impressions, so I really appreciate the observations of fans like you who watch the games more carefully.
The more Rodgers continues to hone the short, quick passing game, using the entire field, then the more the long game will open up for the occasional big strikes that are so exciting. A paradox.

You know, '61, you got me wondering, "just when did I start to become critical of AR?"

The long and short of it, best I can recall, is 2015, when MM gave play calling up to Tom Clements. I recall at the time, after hearing a number of thinly veiled contentious statements about play calling in pressers by Rodgers through the 2014 season, that things went off the rails a bit, and MM ended up taking back playcalling at some point, and even went so far as to take away Rodgers' carte blanc control at the LOS. Rodgers was bitter about it, and petulant, but after two to three weeks of MM running the show with an iron fist, the results were positive. He then let up and gave Rodgers back his control. In hindsight, maybe not the best thing.

Since that season, I started looking very carefully at Rodgers, listening with a critical ear to statements in pressers (from both he and MM), as well as started looking back at historical games (and seasons) and comparing how Rodgers used to play, vs. how his game had morphed. If I recall correctly, a few seasons ago, I actually implored you to go back and watch previous seasons' condensed games and compare for yourself, and I believe you agreed at the time that you were seeing the same things I had reported. Maybe I have you mistaken for TheGreatReynoldo or someone else.

At any rate.. My long-story-short just got long. Sorry. It's been since 2015 that I've become vocally critical of Rodgers on this site. It's been the last two seasons that I've probably gone over the edge with it.

2014 Bengals game Oppy. Open screaming match between the two when McCarthy stripped Rodgers after he checked out of three straight run calls early in the 2d quarter? CBS? cut away from game to side line showing it. First time I've seen McCarthy completely lose it. Had to physically separate the two. After the game, the veterans told Rodgers to 'knock it off'. That they had it with his diva act. One of the few times his teammates rebukes him, and let out publicly. There is a reason this happened, and the back story is interesting in it's own right.

Flak, you nailed it. That was really the moment that set off the chain of events.

It has been interesting/frustrating, all things considered from that point until the boiling point during this last off season- how the fan base and most of the media completely ignores/discards/discounts so many of those events.

It's as though they never happened.

It became really clear to me that all those years where MM, the Head coach, the play caller, would be asked by the press about the anemic run game, and he'd always say, "Frankly, it starts with attempts." To me, the fact that the playcaller continually- week after week, sometimes- said it starts with attmepts was a big tip off to what was going on. Rodgers was checking out of plays left and right by my estimation, and MM was giving a straight answer to the press without selling out his very sensitive QB in the public eye. Rodgers, of course, was glad to let the media and the fan base skewer his coach for the lack of a run game. Rodgers would masterfully feed the press lines like "We need to get the RB's more touches", or, "We need to get the RB's more involved in the gameplan", but he NEVER said "We need to RUN the ball more", or "We need to hand off the ball in those situations." The biggest mistake MM made was handing Rodgers the keys and letting him run wild. I appreciate the sentiment- he knew Rodgers was a special arm talent with a special ability to read defenses to match, and he didn't want to get in Rodger's way and hamper him. I think MM miscalculated Rodgers character and/or ego, and when things started to get out of control, MM opted to keep it internal because Rodgers will always be a Part of Packers history- the same high road the organization took with Favre during that fiasco- don't rock the boat publicly and create a divide; look at the big picture for the franchise and take the gut punches.

That was my take away at the time, at any rate. Not a very popular take away, I may add, but one based on actual observation and some pretty thick circumstantial evidence.

Anyways.. I digress. It looks like either Rodgers has started to come around or LeFleur has Rodgers reeled in.. Hopefully they can keep things moving in the current direction.

Oppy and Flackcatcher, this is fascinating history that is highly relevant to the present.
The good news is that if this scenario is largely true -- and it rings true to me -- then Aaron Rodgers has a golden opportunity to amend his ways and finish his career to its fullest potential for himself and the Packers.
With the great start to the season for the team, the coachability of Rodgers hasn't really been tested. With lots of away games to come, and possible adversity, we'll see if Rodgers stays the course of working within the system implemented by his coach.
I'm rooting for Rodgers big time to step up as a leader of patience and perseverance in tough times so as to bring out the best in his personality and performance.
At stake is an elevation in his already lofty legacy, rather than a diminishment -- as well as, it seems to me, a Super Bowl championship or two for the Packers.

Guys, the echos between McCarthy and Farve and MLF and Rodgers are down right eerie. Rodgers, who is a student of football history, knows his time with the Packers may be short if he does not change his ways. This is his second and perhaps his last chance to set things right inside 1265 for his own legacy. I hope he understands that.

At the time there were only two reporters who followed up after the game. And only one who kept after to find out the back story. That was Jason Wilde, who was with ESPN Milwaukee at the time. While McCarthy did his best to minimize the rift, Rodgers was to be blunt, pouting in public. It was the veteran linemen and WR who confronted Rodgers and told him he was putting their season at risk. That they went public, and probably had the front office OK to do so was a giant flashing signal to the fan base. I came to the same conclusion you did a bit earlier because of this. I also believe that Ted Thompson's announcement to retire was directly related to the fallout between Rodgers and McCarthy. I still think we fans don't know the extant of the damage Aaron Rodgers did to the Packer organization during this period, and we in all likely hood, will never know.

No '61. It was 2014 at the Bengals. Game which they lost Starks, he went down and that rookie from UCLA played his only game for the Packers, lost him and John Kuhn was the only RB on the active roster for the rest of the game. Know you. Seattle, where the Packers choked away a trip to the Superbowl in 2014. That (ugh) season.

The thing with "hold the ball too long" is in discussion since 2011. Thats a fact. Holding too long and throwing away were always there.
I dont even know whats the reason and if its a good or a bad thing. Like Always, there goes a lot into it. It has his pros and cons, but it here since AR starts to be AR, thats for sure.

I am positive that I've posted stats showing AR takes longer to throw the ball than all but two or three QBs for several seasons now. Stats always need context.

It didn't matter when GB had great pass-blocking offensive lines nearly as much as it did in 2018 with the turnstile at RG, Bulaga missing some time and Bakh getting banged up for a time.

This year Bakh is mortal due to being banged up, but Bulaga has been tremendous as a pass blocker. Turner and Taylor were both up and down, not so bad considering the quality of the opponents, but it meant that the ball needed to come out quicker and it has. Jenkins has been very solid in both run and pass, though not elite - he probably only gets better.

Easily Rodgers' best, most complete game played in the last 4 years. Most accurate I've seen him throw the ball in the last 6 or so.

I hope he continues to spread the ball around after the return of Adams. We've seen Rodgers lose his preferred target and start to spread the ball around and get it out quick in the past, and we've seen him revert to force feeding and holding the ball when that target came back into the lineup.

Please, LeFleur, keep him on this path. He's lights out when he utilizes all the weapons and executes the offense.

I mean 5 TD in the air and one on the ground? Yes, I think Rodgers is back to having fun. That is a very, very good thing. The young WRs are learning and that will just make this offense more of a challenge down the road. Plus involving the RBs and FB in the passing game makes it really tough to defend.

Wow!!! Just WOW!!

Best game I've seen by Rodgers since the 2010 playoff game against Atlanta IMO. Yes, there's the game against Houston in 2012 but this was more impressive IMO because of the difference in receivers.

Speaking of WR's I've been critical calling for Gute to go trade for an upgrade at WR. These guys BALLED OUT for their QB and team today. EXCELLENT job by the entire receiving corps. I'm not saying

PLEASE hurry up and get right Mr. Savage. I mean HOLY CRAP it's like night and day since he went out.

* A reminder for us to be slow about giving up on fast receivers, and even not-so-fast receivers.
* So that's what Jimmy Graham looks like when he's good; and here I was ready to cut him as late as yesterday.
* Bend but don't break. Redmond's tackle to save a touchdown led to Carr's turnover fumble into the end zone. Bend until you get a break.
* The opposite of the low-scoring Bears game in our opener, and so the Packers show how to win both ways.

. 6-1!

. Defeat another well rested opponent

. Our Offense is starting to roll. Love the non-McCarthey look.

. Our D's kryptonite is teams with good O-lineman and TEs (Like today and the eagles)

. It's now time to go on a 4-0 road trip (with a bye in between)

The Raiders made a ton of spectacular plays (and some very elusive runs as well). What a testament to the Packers that they can take Carr even when he (Carr) had a superbly accurate game throwing, and his receivers dropped virtually no unforced balls all game.

As much as the Raiders wanted to win (and they really, really, REALLY wanted it) the Packers wanted it more. Terrific game, and the most enjoyable one to watch for a long time. Ice creams all round, game balls everywhere.

Yes there was some confusion in the secondary, and yes, Savage would be preferred S on the field..

But I thought both Amos and Redmond made a number of quality plays on the field today.

Agree on both Amos and Redmond. I was pretty harsh in my criticism of him in the preseason and first couple of games. His tackling has greatly improved .i had to wonder if the pass D was vulnerable because of Savage being out and man coverage was not an option. Pettine will hopefully devise a scheme that will fix it, this being a copycat league.

"One of these days, he's actually going hit MVS in stride." - Especially when you have him that wide open. C'mon AR - how many times?

So this is what AR looks like when the D can play a bit and stop the other team in the red zone! But to be fair, Raiders D was highly suspect. But some of those throws were really good.

Carr's quick passing game just ate them up. How does Pettine answer this?

Why didn't MLF let Boyle throw the ball?

Boyle keeping it on the ground is textbook situational football. The only job of the QB at that point in a game where you have that kind of score differential is to eat clock and protect the ball.

Incomplete passes kill the clock, and a pick could give the opposing team a small window to climb back into the game.

You just protect the ball, hand it off, and drain the clock.

Rodgers was dealing.

The Carr fumble through end-zone was huge - changed everything.

Even Graham played well.

Middle of the field was wide-open against our D. Possibly the Raiders bye allowed them to conjure up great schemes, but GB needs to clean that up in a hurry.

Is Shepherd ever going to return a punt again?

Rodgers well deserved game-ball.

I knew they'd get better as the season progressed but this offense is FUN to watch. The ILLUSION of complexity is alive and well in the GB offense and it just keeps getting better.

Get back Adams like Romo said over, and over, and over again and this is going to be a wicked scary team as long as the defense gets back to playing like they were earlier.

GREAT job by the defense in the Red-whole D stuffed them in the 4th Quarter on 4th a goal. That was prettyu!!Zone. Martinez hustled and made the play on the Carr fumble and the

Classic trap game. BUT the Packers overcame unscouted looks, a good QB on top of his game and a team (Raiders) they do not see but one every couple of years. Give the Raiders credit. Three TE sets with WR driving deep created voids in coverage that left the Packer SS and slot DB a step behind a game long. Know what. Packers did the same thing to the Raiders. Drove the WR deep, slid the TE behind and flared the RB out or in wheel routes all game long. Raiders had no answers. Add Superman (Rodgers) playing a smart disciplined game with a clean pocket all game long, they flatout overpowered the Raiders in the second half. Packers win. PACKERS WIN BABY!! (victory dance) I need a (root) beer....

Thanks for the interesting observations, flackcatcher.
I don't know if this is what happened with the Raiders offense today -- but having a couple of guys working the middle of the field seems to get guys open.
All of the traffic in the middle of the field seems to cause general congestion and confusion -- including natural picks -- and pass catchers seem to break open in splendid ways.

Raiders TE are big fast and athletic. No matter who the Packers matchup with them, they were going to pose a real challenge. Also, the Packers secondary played a soft matchup zone which left the Raiders WR a good 5 yards free in their route packages. Unusual for this Packer defense, which as a rule is very hands on route coverage. My only guess is that the referee crew for his game called pass interference tight. And with the NFL PI rules tilted to the offense, Pettine did not want to take any chances. Still, it was a strange look for this secondary, who has been very aggressive so far this season.

- Not much to say about the offense other than wow. Incredible performance.
- Just look at that pass distribution and yardage for all WRs.
- Rodgers: Perfect passer rating and over 30 attempts. Special performance.
- Defense does get a great job for holding the raiders pointless on 3 attempts.
- Defense is starting to resemble the defenses of the past. Lots of wide open WRs. Against better teams this will be an issue.
- Kind of tired of all the posing junk. Other teams do it as well. It's turning into a poser league.
- I think Tony Romo is a good announcer.
- Seems the packers are getting a lot of favorable calls this year.
- They won a game that they should have won at home, and that's not always an easy thing for a new coach.
- Like mentioned by Aaron, Graham made someone miss, and he caught a low ball for a TD.
- I was thinking the same thing about the defense missing Savage the whole game.
- Raiders' Jacob looked very good.
- After seeing Kumerow without his helmet, I now understand the "Touchdown Jesus" references.

Tough stretch of games coming up, but they positioned themselves nicely for it.

Re: Tony Romo is a good announcer

This is the first game I have heard Romo call that I found him bearable.

That is largely because in the past, he is so intent on trying to -predict- every single snap that he ends up talking over the entire game.

I get it, Tony, you're an NFL QB and you know what's going on. However, as a booth commentator, I find it far more professional and viewable if you call the game as it happens, maybe break down the play after it has occurred, than talking over the entire play telling us what you think is about to happen.

He was much better today than he has been in the past. But I do believe ALL modern commentators could stand to let the game talk a bit more for itself. Let it breathe a little. That's just my take on Romo, and I guess, professional broadcasting in general. I do think there is a role for the ex-pro athlete in the booth, but I feel the art of old-school sports journalism in live call of games had value and has been somewhat lost and railroaded out of existence to an extent by over-analysis and too much predictive banter.

Oppy - good post and I agree with you. The problem is the TV ratings. All of the networks have made ratings their priority over quality journalism and quality broadcasting. They're doing anything and everything to either increase or at least maintain their ratings. They have forgotten that the game and players are the product.

Romo's role is analyst not play caller. I had the sound off for most of the game so I didn't really hear if Romo changed his game or not. I did listen when Carr fumbled through the end zone because I thought the officials on the field blew the call and then again on the goal line stand in the 4th quarter just to be sure the officials got it right this week after last week against the Lions.

I'm afraid that we are beyond the days of the true professional broadcaster. Of course we are also beyond the days of true, professional NFL football as well. Thanks, Since '61

Yes, I would like the Packers defense to play better. However, I would like to get some key players back on the field as well. Packers clearly miss Savage and I also believe Raven Greene is also needed. The fact is we would all like our team to play a “perfect” game every game. That is just not realistic. Fans talking about yards gained is meaningless in this game. Once the Packers went up 21-10 at HT the Packers had a good grip on this game. The Raider drives took what they were given but it also was taking way too much time off the clock. I am going to enjoy the 6-1 record and will really be looking forward to facing the Mahomes less Chiefs in KC next Sunday. Go Pack Go.

There is nothing that Arron Rodgers can't handle now. Several receivers gained points today. TD points! Everyone knew their situation. All or nothing! Just so much Rodgers can do with protection. Totally Awesome Blocking, as Rodger's took shots at everyone. The Smiths continue to show their the best. But the aggression of the secondary was to relaxed. And the middle to open. Were lucky we had Amos. This defense needs to really get good again. A little less thinking and more action.

You're right. While we are 6-1 & look good, you're right about the clear issues on defense. First it was Jacobs carving thru us....like Jordan Howard & Dalvin Cook did.
Then we made Darren Waller look like Tony Gonzalez.

These things will cost us eventually so it needs to be cleaned up. Hopefully Savage can make a big difference back there.

Rodgers was Superman but Matt LaFleur deserves a lot of credit for the offense today. No Adams, no receiver caught a pass in the 1st quarter, then he confused them totally and went to receivers. You just had the feeling that the offense couldn't be stopped no matter who was at WR. LaFleur now just needs to have a talk with Pettine and tell him to do something about the run game and TE's running free.

One other observation: The Raiders continued to run the ball, which was understandable to a certain point, in the third quarter when down 3 scores. They were still in it at that point, particularly if they could have gotten a quick score and turnover. Even after the missed fourth down conversion, had they been able to force a safety (and they nearly did) followed by a TD drive they regain the momentum and are right back in it. But there was no hurry-up, they continued to run the clock down to around 15 seconds on each play, many of which were runs and so the clock just kept ticking. I get that they're not built to come from behind and I'm glad they did us the favor but for all the smart moves Gruden made in offensive game planning and play calling that was a head scratcher to me. They had our D on it's heels for much of the game but could have put their foot on the throat and didn't do that. MLF did the opposite, unlike MM who would get way too predictable with a lead.

Exactly. This is why I felt much of Oakland’s 2nd half yardage was meaningless. They were taking what the Packers gave them, no more. All the while they would win the battle while losing the war. They needed to score quickly down 3 scores. They never did. Enjoy the W.

We really miss Darnell Savage, he can cover TEs and he's fast enough to play sideline to sideline in single high coverage.

Getting Ibraheim Campbell back should help as well, he's way more athletic than Redmond and is another guy that can cover TEs.

Give Redmond props for not giving up on the play right before the half, if he doesn't make that tackle Carr doesn't fumble the ball into the end zone.

We really missed Kenny Clark... DTs don't show up on the stat sheet as much, but he might be the Packers best defensive player. He's great against the run, can get after the QB pretty well for a DT and he allows the Smiths a lot more freedom to move around.

Aaron Rodgers has been playing like an MVP since the Eagles game... He hasn't had the gawdy numbers since Davante Adams got hurt (until today), but that's more on his surrounding cast dropping a bunch of passes and him playing within the offense (the old Aaron Rodgers might not have stayed in run plays inside the 10 yard line like he has for the most part since the Cowboys game).

Crazy stat, Rodgers hasn't had an INT that didn't bounce off a WRs hands (or facemask) since his first game back from the broken collarbone against Carolina in 2017. That's almost 2 years!
It's even more impressive because he played all last year on a broken leg with a torn MCL in a stale offense.

Gotta give LaFleur and Gruden credit, they both called great games. I was getting annoyed with all the pick/rub routes the Raiders were using to get people open. A couple were clearly illegal, but they rarely call that. Those are really difficult to guard especially if you are in man coverage and they are short, quick passes because the defense has no chance to get pressure.

Gutey took a roster without much top tier talent, very little speed/athleticism and zero depth and in less than two years has fast, athletic playmakers at pretty much every position group (except ILB unless Oren Burks can step it up in the run game, I like Martinez, but he's just a solid player and he's a huge liability in coverage). We clearly have a lot more depth as well because we've been winning despite missing key pieces on offense and defense.

Well hello offence. The nice thing about this one was that it was mostly all down to the offence and we don't rely on the defence to get wins. That said, the defence did stop this becoming a true shootout with some redzone heroics.

My thoughts:
- Aaron Rodgers is still peerless.
- When we come up against good O lines, we're in trouble. Our D is geared around pressuring the QB and we leave horrible gaps for TEs and slots. Same was true against the Eagles. But hey, nobody said our D is perfect yet. Work to do at ILB and S still. I also think not having Kenny Clark was a major issue to us not getting at Carr more.
- The pass coverage was mostly 2017/2018 terrible. It's amazing how much we miss Savage already.
- We have some depth in the WR corps. AR is a force multiplier and makes their job easier, sure. But I really like our options. Kumerow and Lazard are characters. Bad drop from Lazard but he didn't let that get to him which is what you want to see.
- Shepherd is not the droid we're looking for. Sorry. At least not on KR. He may still come good at WR although I have major doubts he'll get the chance.
- Lewis is a trojan supporting the O line and Jimmy Graham played great. More please.
- Martinez needs help - I would look at ILB before WR now.
- Amos is good. Redmond is good. Amos and Redmond is not good. Need to work on communication. In fact, the zonal handovers in general were awful. Credit where it's due, the Raiders knew how to exploit it.
- The good news is, we're bemoaning the defence and it only gave up 24, not 30+. Yeah, it could have been more. Could have been less.
- If the O Line can keep up this kind of protection, and we get Clark and Savage back and add a good ILB from somewhere, this team can do great things.
