Gut Reactions: 2014 Week 13 vs The Patriots

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb by Chris Humphreys—USA TODAY Sports.

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb by Chris Humphreys—USA TODAY Sports.

  • Bye Cow.
  • I've never been happier that one of my game predictions was wrong.
  • Despite the bad drop, Davante Adams played a hell of a game.
  • As did Mike Daniels.
  • Aaron Rodgers seemed to start a bit geeked-up. Lots of hot throws. But he was the difference in a game where the other quarterback was Tom Brady. That's how good he is.
  • Loved how creative McCarthy got with some of the designed plays to get Cobb free.
  • Also loved Jordy Nelson blowing up Revis Island. No excuses, Pats fans. Cover 1, and Jordy won the route.
  • Yes, the Green Bay Packers are a Super Bowl contender.
  • Eddie Lacy seems to consistently miss the obvious cutback lane.
  • I can't believe Gronkowski didn't single handedly kill the Packers.
  • Tramon was up and down.
  • David Bakhitiari played a fantastic game.
  • Great job by the perimeter guys allowing non-Gronk receivers to do much of anything.
  • Why was Mason Crosby instructed to hit line-drives? It boggles the mind.
  • Linsley was late recognizing a blitz from the middle linebacker on one 3rd down that ruined a redzone possession.
  • Loved Belichick chatting with McCarthy post-game. He had nice things to say after the game in 2010, clearly respects Mike. Wish more Packers fans did.
  • Have to fly and get to work. I might post more later tonight.
  • I love this team.
  • Go Pack.

Which ol' Cow?

Nick Perry's picture

LMAO!!!1 Dude you said it before I could! 10 THUMBS UP!!!!!

COW IS OUT OF HERE!!!!

TommyG's picture

I still hate the toss/sweep play
We can win against an elite QB.
We left a lot of points on the field.
Our team plays to the level of the competition.
Our packers are the best team in the nfl.
No screen plays? I love the screen play.
Adams had to have a big game and did.
Eddy lacy is why we won.

Otto's picture

"Our team plays to the level of the competition."

I respectfully disagree. They've boat raced inferior teams and now stood toe to toe with the best the AFC has to offer. No dip in performance.

chugwater's picture

Should have boat raced NE. Poor red zone O.

HankScorpio's picture

Pretty nice to beat the Pats with less than your best game.

chugwater's picture

Completely agree. Feel that if we meet again in FEB there is potential to compete at a higher level. You know BB will make adjustments.

NewNikeShoes's picture

5 things:
1.) I was right. It was an awesome defensive game. Everyone on the offense should hug the defense. Dom Capers was great too.
2.) I thought the refs missed a lot of calls against the Packers. Just me?
3.) We should be happy we have a player like Aaron Rodgers.
4.) No screen passes? Hmm...
5.) Adams, as well as most of this rookie class, is performing vastly beyond expectations. Paul Richardson of the Seahawks is the only underperforming rookie I can think of.

COW, you are now the ridicule of the Packer's fan base on this website.

packsmack's picture

Most of the blitzes the Pats ran were delay blitzes, which makes it tough to run a screen.

FITZCORE1252's picture

Fantastic day!

Pack won.

I won some sweet Lambeau print (thanks @CHTV and @Ballparkart).

Nimrod is gone.

Cards lost.

If you picked against THE GOOD LORDS GREEN BAY PACKERS, you should probably go sit in the corner for awhile to think about things.

GPG

Bearmeat's picture

COW COW WHERE ART THOU?

Awesome win. Best since 2010. This team is a legit SB threat and SHOULD get homefield throughout.

FITZCORE1252's picture

O-line played lights out. Mike had some creative wrinkles early. Dom had a decent plan.

CBS sucks!

jbromusic's picture

hell YES. our o-line played lights out. they should all get game balls

chugwater's picture

Simms is much better than Lynch and Johnston. By far.

FITZCORE1252's picture

Mainly the crap at the beginning.

Maybe i should focus my anger at DTV I pay for Sunday Ticket, I want every second of every game. Missing the first two minutes sucked. Sunday Ticket should've covered the beginning until CBS switched over.

chugwater's picture

Agree with you there.

Nick Perry's picture

Amen!

jeremyjjbrown's picture

CBS has the worst coverage of the 4. By far.

jbovegas73's picture

Yeah, I was real pleased that we missed the first three minutes of the game due to commercials .. why I hate having the afternoon game :/

Oregonpackerfan's picture

But they did show the string of F-bombs, Barrington's reveal of the ba-gronk-a-gronk, and Brady being walked on a leash to pee. Not sure if Fox would have caught all that.

FITZCORE1252's picture

Seriously, wtf was up with the leash!

Where are you at in Oregon? I recently moved west of Portland. Looking for Packer spots around here.

jeremyjjbrown's picture

"Brady being walked on a leash to pee"

What? Is there a vid of this anywhere?

JimTaylor31's picture

Very sweet. Now we know we can beat anybody. Please just stay healthy and focused. Very proud of the defense today. Wow!! Oh and ANOTHER NostraCOWmus prediction goes down the toilet.

vj_ostrowski's picture

No one will miss you, COW.

HankScorpio's picture

Big-huge-MONSTROUS 3rd down pass play to convert the last first down and keep Brady off the field. The o-line gave Rodgers all down and he found a well-covered Cobb for the conversion. Perfect blocking, perfect pass, perfect concentration in traffic to make the catch. We're spoiled by that sort of thing but fans of just about anyone else were dropping their jaws over that one.

Fantastic win. Can we start talking about home field and the re-captured Lambeau mystique yet?

Idiot Fan's picture

That throw........there just aren't words.

Bohj's picture

- Just...........yesssss
- Big boy win
- Hope other teams play scared now
- Can all of our coaching staff get their due now?

Brian's picture

All except Slocum

DraftHobbyist's picture

I really disagree about Daniels. I felt he got pushed all over and did not have a good game. I think HHCD was a stud defending Gronk, though. He's our future answer against elite TE's. CB's did well even after we lost Shields. House is clearly growing as a player, and Tramon is gone after this year. I also think the line drives were smart for as cold as it was, and they worked well.

I also continue to say that Bakhtiari is a future Pro Bowl LT and an absolute steal in the 4th round. I thought he should've been a 1st that would go in the 2nd. Can't believe he fell.

The Packers are a good team that took a step today. They still fail to capitalize on many mistakes of the opponents, and we still waste way too many timeouts. It could bite us some day against an elite team if we get behind.

I also feel the defense played very average for the most part. They held the Patriots to no FG's because they were getting TD's instead, and it's the long drives of the offense that kept the Patriot offense from heating up.

jbromusic's picture

for the most part, i thought tramon played very well. much better than the last few weeks

DraftHobbyist's picture

My comment about Tramon being gone is because his contract is running out and the rest of our CB's are stepping up.

Idiot Fan's picture

I agree for the most part, but man did the D choose the right time to show up - that pressure by DJones and sack by Neal came at absolutely perfect times.

Thegreatreynoldo's picture

Regarding Daniels, yes and no. He was very disruptive and had 3 of our 5 QB hits. He supplied some of the impressive pass rush, which was consistent even though it did not produce earth-shattering statistics. I have written before that Daniels is at best adequate against the run.

vj_ostrowski's picture

COW:

"Packers can't beat championship caliber teams.

Until they prove otherwise... it should always be assumed that they will lose games like today's.

54-24 Pats."

COW - what makes you think you know ANYTHING about football?

DrealynWilliams's picture

Bullet #1

Im done.

Bye.

Nerd's picture

The defense showed up!

I thought they would, but I thought they'd get some INTs. Great victory. We've proven we can beat an elite team.

Now let's do it consistently.

-Great game for Davante, even with the drop.

-Great game for Sam Barrington.

-Great TD for Richard Rodgers, two weeks in a row.

jbromusic's picture

GREAT to see guys like barrington, rodgers, and quarless stepping up. we're going to need guys like that in the playoffs

chugwater's picture

Good game by Davante. Great if he makes that catch.

Nick Perry's picture

No disrespect but I believe it was pretty obvious Adams needed to show up. Not really going out on a limb there. But you're right, rookie class kicking butt!!

packsmack's picture

Disappointed in everyone talking about things other than this great win. Have more self-control.

vj_ostrowski's picture

There's a reason Nagler led his piece with it. He's been a worthless troll for too long now. And it's refreshing to be rid of him, if he's a man of his word.

But he's a bad person, so I'm not sure we can trust him anyway.

Nerd's picture

And what's up with that offensive line!?

12 seconds!? Wasn't just on that one play either. Aaron had time to stat whore ALL DAY.

Darrin's picture

Never been so happy to see "Bye" and "Cow" in the same sentence.

Go Pack!

Idiot Fan's picture

Aaron, if MM doesn't get into the Good this week, then....well....I will protest loudly. I thought he called a hell of a game. Also, in the future, when we're complaining about lack of creativity early on, let's remember that he always saves new stuff for some of the bigger games.

Also, that guy who plays QB for us is just ridiculous.

jbromusic's picture

this is one of mccarthy's top 5 games. the guy is a top notch coach and can be very creative when he wants to be

HankScorpio's picture

McCarthy was able to out-scheme Belichek into having LBs on Randall Cobb from time to time, for god's sake. They respected Revis but didn't fear him and Jordy rewarded them with a fire on Revis Island. They lined up in creative formations and got contributions from a lot of different guys.

Brilliant offensive game plan by MM and Co.

HankScorpio's picture

Definitely agree that Capers is doing an outstanding job, especially since the bye. Who knew moving Matthews inside would have such a trans-formative effect? It's locked down the run game and the Packers pass defense has been pretty good all year, with a notable exception or two.

Thegreatreynoldo's picture

This is the chicken or the egg question. Were the ILBs that deficient in talent or was the defensive line that bad against the run? Boyd and Guion really seemed to have improved against the run (Datone not so much), and Daniels is adequate. Moving an elite talent like CMIII to ILB was going to help. MM has been quoted as saying that GB thought about it back in April: I don't know why then CMIII had to take the "5-day crash course" after the bye. This could have been part of those secret preseason practices. A number of authors suggested moving CMIII to ILB quite a few games ago. I suppose that the coaches had to have confidence in Perry, Peppers, Neal, and for pass rush, Elliott as well, before the move could be made.

Thegreatreynoldo's picture

Good points, DannyDS. I didn't take into consideration the move to the one-gap responsibility when I posted. I am not really sure how much we still 2-gap now.

keeley2's picture

I love this sites efficiency when executing the anti-Cow campaign. Good sites go for the throat and put bad fans away early. Well done.

pooch's picture

Nagler, with you, thought Pack would lose by 17,couldnt be no happier to be wrong, this is a signature win for Pack

jeremyjjbrown's picture

Drew Stanton stinks. The Packers are in the drivers seat for Home Field advantage.

davy jones's picture

More worried about Seattle than AZ.

jbromusic's picture

i think we can beat SEA in green bay

Bugeater's picture

I'm not worried about ANYBODY.

jeremyjjbrown's picture

The Packers can't control who they play, but they have control of where they play.

davy jones's picture

More worried about Seattle than AZ.

Bohj's picture

I don't feel like we can rip the D. No one in the NFL has been able to stop Brady. We forced punts when we needed them. And that last stop was so money. We had a good game plan. Gronk gonna be Gronk. His damage was acceptable. This will be the lynch pin to launch our D into confident. Also: props to Barrington minutes.

vj_ostrowski's picture

I'm taking 21 points given up against ANY team. This Packers team is built to win those games. Spot the other team no more than 21 points, and GB wins that game 95% of the time.

Nerd's picture

Why'd Belicheck go for the FG at the end?

They're down by 5, just doesn't make sense. Stupid decision, but I'll take it.

Bugeater's picture

He didn't have a choice. The Packers D - yes THAT D - forced him to do it.

HankScorpio's picture

Not much in the playbook for 4th and 18, which I believe was the distance after the sack on 3rd down.

Idiot Fan's picture

It's easy, send FredEx down the seam...

packsmack's picture

Don't you dare ever mention that again.

chugwater's picture

FG and a stop puts them in position to win it with another FG. Right call.

Evan's picture

With less than 3 minutes on the clock? I'm not so sure.

I was surprised they went for the FG. Seems very un-Belichickian.

chugwater's picture

The options were not that great to be sure, but with 2 timeouts it was probably better than 4th and a ton.

Evan's picture

Oh, right. I forgot about the sack.

TommyG's picture

In god's name, how????

Evan's picture

Ha. Is that for me??

It's not that I forgot about the sack itself, just that it directly preceded the FG.

Cut me some slack. It was a stressful day.

Nick Perry's picture

It was 4th and 18 and by the time they attempted the FG there was 2:40 on the clock and he had 2 5time outs and the 2 minute warning. If they hold they get the ball with 2 minutes at worst down by 3. He has a All-Pro kicker who'd missed one FG all year and like 2 last year. I'm sure though MM would run 3 times, the defense would hold, and he'd kick a FG to win. TO BAD BILL!

Sir Cheese 82's picture

They also would have had the option to onside kick if they converted the FG attempt.

Idiot Fan's picture

So much to love about the offense today:
- Long, clock-eating drives
- Third-down conversions
- Oline play
- Clutch catches by the WRs (with one notable exception)
- Clutch catches by some TEs at important times
- Insane throws by QB1

Only stalling in the red zone and some rushing troubles at times keeps it from being an A+.

Bugeater's picture

Looks like a championship team to me - and they STILL haven't played their best game!

ballark's picture

Great game by the Packers. The big difference on defense is our ability to stop the run. Last in the league at one point this season, we've now turned in solid if not respectable efforts against the Bears, Eagles, Vikes and now the Pats. When this defense can force opponents off the field and get the ball into the hands of 12 and our dynamic offense, wins happen.

As for our offense, it starts with that o-line. Gritty as all hell. Lang's ankle, Sitton's toe, the rookie at center...I just love this group. And they are flat out dominating. And kudos to 12 for moving so fluidly in the pocket. The guy just seems to have this magic sense of how/where the pocket is collapsing, when the step up, when to drop back...I don't know how he does it, and I've never seen a QB do it better. Ever.

Don't care about cow and I don't care to talk about cow.

Go Pack!

Idiot Fan's picture

Also, if you're an offensive coach, why not just teach the WRs, on every third down, to just run out, turn to face the DB, and run directly into him. All you need is that illegal contact call for a first down. I hate that penalty.

DraftHobbyist's picture

Yeah, Tramon got screwed. If the offensive player runs into the defensive player it's supposed to be a penalty on the offensive player, and usually it's a no call. The refs got that one wrong.

HankScorpio's picture

On the 12 second pass play, Jordy got tackled in the end zone directly in front of the ref. So it's far from an automatic flag.

Even on the play in question, NE had to whine for it. Sort of looks bad that they got it. I mean, a pre-throw penalty draws a flag 2 seconds after the pass is incomplete? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

Idiot Fan's picture

Yeah, for the most part I was very happy with the way that they were letting them play. That's why that call - and the fact that it was a stopped third down - was so frustrating.

jeremyjjbrown's picture

Just make sure they teach them not to do it right in front of the ref.

johnnyd17's picture

Mike and Mike with a big time sack in clutch ..crunch time...

Evan's picture

Great, great win. Can't say enough about it.

And to think, it should and could have been a much bigger win. Lots of points left on the field today.

The playoffs are going through Green Bay this year.

Bugeater's picture

Yup. The amazing takeaway from this game is they still have room to improve. Scary.

DrealynWilliams's picture

I lied. I can't help but to take this all in! This was a helluva win by the Packers!

FIRST: Let's give coach MM his props damn it!

- Sam Barrington first tackle is EXACTLY why he should be starting over AJ Hawk. He HITS! He attacks! And his energy is something NO other LB gives (even Clay). His only bad play I can think of was on that Blount 3rd and short run where he got lazy and assumed the play was over.

- I loved seeing the "new" formations we ran on offense (like I predicted). I seen the Bunch Formation,The Cobra,a new wrinkle with Cobb AND Boykin in the backfield and a ton of motion pre-snap. I was spot on.

- I am SOOOOOO proud of this defense. I think the coaches are finally getting "it" and are playing the right players and playing the right players in the right position.

- Clay missed an assignment and Brady found a wide-open RB,but Clay was a huge reason why Gronk didn't really have a big game. Some people may not have noticed, but on plays where Gronk was at TE and Clay was at OLB - at the snap Clay followed Gronk on his outside and whoever was manned up on Gronk covered his inside. Beautiful design.

-It felt like the Pats played TON of zone. Either that, or they're a helluva man-coverage bunch.
** I'm going with zone, because we were horrible in the red-zone**

-Peppers,Neal and Daniels all had huge plays. They may not show up with many stats, but they all had key plays.

-Cobb is making some moneeeeeeeeeeeey!

-No excuse for that Adams dropped TD pass, but dude has to be a bit more consistent. He's a damn good looking rookie WR though.

-Quarless had some clutch catches. He caught some darts from Rodgers in the freezing cold while being blanketed. Many props to Quarless.

- We MUST figure out what's up with our running game. It's not bad,but it's also not fully reliable. I'm getting a bit anxious to see what Harris can do on just a handful of carries with the # 1s.

chugwater's picture

Nice analysis. Think you covered everything.

Nerd's picture

Adams is a rookie. Remember how it used to take guys a couple years to get used to FAvre's fastball? Adams is still getting used to Aaron. Looks like he was pretty well in sync today too. Much more so that he has been the past month or so.

I have the sense that Mike is saving DuJuan as a secret weapon for the playoffs. It's weird.

DrealynWilliams's picture

"I have the sense that Mike is saving DuJuan as a secret weapon for the playoffs. It's weird."

You're not the only one thinking that.

I can hear some announcer saying something along the lines of,"...Dujuan is fresh. He's barely had any carries/touches during the regular season." as he's running through and past tacklers. Lol.

tm_inter's picture

I have the sense that Mike is saving Jeff Janis as a secret weapon for the playoffs, possibly as kick-off and punt returner, as well as showing his speed after catching passes.

DrealynWilliams's picture

That's why I gave the word "new" the bunny ears.

The formations (the ones mentioned) we seen today aren't the ones we typically see or have seen up until today and I absolutely loved it.

Jordy is a helluva WR

Revis is a helluva CB

They both made plays today.

barutanseijin's picture

Well played game for both teams, it's just that the Packers were better. Rodgers was a little better than Brady, Jordy just a little better than Revis, Packer D a little better than theirs, Packer pass protection way better than Brady's. Very satisfying victory for me sitting between Pats fans & a Lions fan in a NYC bar.

Tundraboy's picture

Whew. That had to be the most nerve wracking game I can remember. Wanted them to win for so many reasons. So many pivotal moments in the game and for the organization, This team is better than ever. Adams arrived, and Cobb's price went way up. But who cares Go Pack Go

Lphill's picture

Barrington was ok, when you watch replays you will see him facing the wrong way on some running plays, when Hawk was in he did come up and make some stops in the gap so dont get all giddy over Barrington, a rotation is nice keeps everyone fresh, on the two passing Pats TD's I think if our DB's turn around sooner maybe they dont score, but great game, team win I wonder how the defense would be with Raji in there.

packeraaron's picture

No. Get all giddy over Barrington. Get all giddy over everything. This is a big win over a Super Bowl contender. Get yo giddy on.

Doug In Sandpoint's picture

Whole lotta Giddy left...

cheddarhead's picture

Cow pie why are u silent when we win. But vocal when we lose.
makes me wonder what kind of fan u really r.

packeraaron's picture

Well, he said if the Packers won he'd never post again. So he's honoring his statement.

murphy's picture

He said a lot of things. My breath is not being held.

With that said, I am going back to getting my giddy on.

Sir Cheese 82's picture

He's not a real fan, he's a troll. He's backed out of his bets before. Either by logging on as a different user name or just blatantly coming back so don't think you'll never see his posts. He can't help himself, being a troll on this site was literally the only thing he has in life. I'll enjoy it while he's gone but unless the admins on this site finally block his IP I'll bet we'll see his silly posts again.

cheddarhead's picture

Good riddance.

4thand1's picture

You welcome true Packer fans! Cow bet me weeks ago they wouldn't win 9. He himself threw himself under the bus with his last windbag prediction. I wish I could have seen him cheering for the Patriots, brady getting sacked, missing the FG, and the MVP Aaron Rodgers putting in the ,"THERES YOUR DAGGER!!!" Can't say its been fun but.............NA NA NA NA,NA NA NA NA, HEY HEY HEY.............GOODBYEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Oregonpackerfan's picture

Sorry that this is off-topic but did anyone notice when the Packers defense sealed the victory, CBS cameras showed a packer player wiping away tears? Which player was that? I replayed it several times but couldn't tell.

4thand1's picture

It was probably Adams.

NewNikeShoes's picture

I think it was Davante or Tramon.
Not 101% sure tho.

Pack12's picture

Mike McCarthy called one hell of a game and had a great game plan. I dare say that he out coached Belicheat.

Thegreatreynoldo's picture

Wow, a lot of hate for Revis has been displayed here. IDK, 2 receptions on 6 targets for 53 yards and a TD against an elite receiver like Nelson and a MVP QB like Rodgers is a pretty respectable day, even if NE hoped for better.

TommyG's picture

I'm not reading the hate. I am seeing a lot of pride in watching our WR making key plays against an elite CB who also played very well.

Thegreatreynoldo's picture

"Eddie Lacy seems to consistently miss the obvious cutback lane."

I just don't have the football acumen to properly assess Mr. Nagler's comment (at least, I would need replays and/or All-22). There seems to be some schizophrenia about Lacy. Many love him. I do note that an author on another site used film/gifs to break down the last 5 running plays where GB ran out the clock last week and showed that on 2 of the 5 plays, Lacy missed the correct cutback lane (even though Lacy gained nice chunks of yardage). Still, Lacy is great after contact, his pass pro is very good now, and he has become a pretty good receiver out of the backfield. Definitely a plus player (IMO). And no, I don't mean to imply that Mr. Nagler thinks otherwise - I don't mean to put words in Mr. Nagler's mouth.

DrealynWilliams's picture

Here's how I look at it:

Teams are going to be in a world of trouble if/when Lacy gets his groove back and becomes more consistent. There will no stopping this Offense.
