Game Recap: Bills Break Tables, Packers' Will in 27-17 Win

Undermanned Packers show fight, but not enough in loss to Bills to lose fourth straight.

The undermanned Green Bay Packers just didn't have the firepower - or defensive fortitude - to slow down Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Halloween weekend in western New York. The Packers did was was glaringly obvious, which was to try to own the clock with the run game. The problem, however, is that the tactic didn't result in many scoring opportunities. Injuries, ejections and playing the best team in football was a recipe the Packers just couldn't overcome. Despite a fantastic game by Aaron Jones, the defense just didn't have an answer for the Bills' high-powered offense.  With the loss, Green Bay falls to 3-5 in the midst of a 4-game losing streak with a visit to the Motor City waiting in the wings.

First Quarter

Buffalo's offense led by Josh Allen took the field first, but Green Bay's defense showed up - Jaire Alexander in particular - with back-to-back PBUs to force an early 3 and out. Green Bay, meanwhile, went early and often to Aaron Jones. After two initial carries, Rodgers hit Sammy Watkins for a short gain and a first down. Operating with two tight ends most of the time, Rodgers kept feeding Jones until Rodgers went to Christian Watson on a 3rd-and-15 for a gain of 12. Watson would suffer a concussion on the play and leave the game. Rodgers would fall incomplete on the 4th down play giving the ball back to Buffalo.

Buffalo Bills' Quarterback Josh Allen evades a tackler in the win over the Packers.

Buffalo Bills' Quarterback Josh Allen evades a tackler in the win over the Packers.

The Bills would turn to running back Devin Singletary, who hit a 32-yarder to get to the Packers' 15. After the Packers stuff two runs for losses, Josh Allen scrambled on third down to get to the 2 and reset the downs. After another scramble, Allen hit tight end Dawson Knox for the touchdown to make it 7-0 Bills.

Green Bay's next drive started with a well-covered flea flicker, and maybe the fastest 3-and-out you'll ever see. After a nice punt return, Buffalo's offense came back out right at mid-field. A Singletary run for 16 yards and a first down would close the first quarter.

Second Quarter

The second started out with a bang for Buffalo, with Allen hitting Stefon Diggs, who beat Rasul Douglas easily, for the touchdown to increase the lead to 14-0. The Packers kept with the run game, however, utilizing both Jones and AJ Dillon for two quick first downs. Rodgers was sacked on the next first down, but the play was wiped out due to an iffy hands-to-the-face call against the Bills. After a Jones run into the Buffalo red zone, the Packers faced a 2nd-and-12 where Rodgers went deep to a twisting, turning Romeo Doubs for an impressive -- and very necessary -- touchdown to cut it to 14-7 Bills.

Buffalo couldn't be stopped on their next drive, however, with big runs coming from James Cook and some very questionable tackling attempts from Darnell Savage. Linebacker Quay Walker, after forcing Cook out of bounds, shoved a coach to earn a 15-yard penalty and subsequent ejection. After two quick passes, the first to Diggs and second to Isaiah McKenzie, it was suddenly 21-7 Bills with under 2 minutes to go in the half. The Packers would gain one first down behind Jones, but ultimately forced to punt after a hand-off on 3rd-and-16.

With no timeouts and about a minute to go, Allen went deep to a wide-open Stefon Diggs for 55 yards, putting the Bills well within field goal range.  An offside penalty by the Packers almost resulted in a free-play touchdown, but Gabriel Davis was just out of bounds. During a Packers timeout, linebacker De'Vondre Campebll could be seen walking off the field with an ice pack on his knee. A Jaire Alexander PBU would force the Bills to kick a field goal, giving the Bills a 24-7 halftime lead.

Third Quarter

The Packers received the second half kick, where Keisean Nixon had a 50-yard kick return negated by a holding call. Starting deep in their own end now, the Packers went back to Aaron Jones who hit a huge run to the 45, putting him over 100 yards on the day. After another run of 11 yards, AJ Dillon hit another chunk play for 28 yards. He was stopped awkwardly on the next play, and left the game limping on his left knee. On 3rd-and-3, Rodgers hit a wide open Robert Tonyan for a touchdown, but it was wiped out by an offensive pass interference penalty.- Mason Crosby hit the 38-yarder to cut it to 24-10 Buffalo.

On their first drive of the second half, Buffalo used the legs of Josh Allen to get deep into Green Bay territory. After a holding call and run stopped for no gain, the Bills were unable to convert a long third down on an Allen scramble. Tyler Bass hit the field goal to put the lead back to 17 at 27-10.

Green Bay's next drive started with a 3rd down conversion behind Aaron Jones, having his best game since his effort against the Bears in Week 2. Back-to-back carries to AJ Dillon, who returned to the game after his knee injury, resulted in another first down with time winding down in the third. From the Bills' 47, Aaron Jones converted yet another first down on a swing pass from Rodgers, putting the Packers in field goal range.

Fourth Quarter

Aaron Jones rushed for 6 on 3rd-and-7, forcing the Packers to go for it on 4th-and-1 from the Bills' 26, where Jones was stuffed short giving the ball back to Buffalo. The Bills next drive started in its own end, when on a 3rd-and-10, Josh Allen was intercepted by Rasul Douglas, who lateraled to Jaire Alexander for a short additional return. A big play by the defense, although a strong "too little too late" feel to it. And before the Packers could even try to score, Aaron Rodgers' first-down pass attempt was batted up and intercepted, giving the ball right back to Buffalo. Quite the summary of the Packers' evening right there.

Allen hit James Cook for 41 yards inside the Packers 10, and then Jaire Alexander came up with a diving interception of Josh Allen inside the 5-yard-line, stopping the bleeding for a little bit. Rodgers hit Tonyan on 3rd-and-5 for a first down, then a 26-yarder to Romeo Doubs moved the sticks again. Rodgers managed to scramble for 11 and one more first down, then uncorked a bomb to a wide open Samori Toure for his first career touchdown, cutting it to 27-17 approaching 5 minutes left.

The Packers' defense stopped Buffalo just inside Green Bay territory, forcing a punt downed at the  17. With no timeouts, Rodgers hit Tonyan for 9 then Doubs to convert the first down at the two-minute warning. A 22-yarder to Amari Rodgers put Green Bay inside the Buffalo 40 with under a minute remaining, but they'd be unable to sustain the drive. Mason Crosby came out to attempt a 55-yard field goal to keep the game alive, but put it left and no good to end the game. The Packers fall to 3-5, while Buffalo stays atop the AFC at 6-1.

Offensive MVP

Aaron Jones was the lone bright spot on a tough night for the Packers, finishing with 143 yards on 20 carries. He was awesome when he had to be. If they get this version of Jones most weeks, this team has a chance.

Defensive MVP

Jaire Alexander led the way in the Green Bay secondary, which obviously didn't have its best day, with 4 PBUs and an interception. He more than did his job against the likes of Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis. His giving of his interception ball to a young fan in the stands was a nice touch by 23.

What Went Right

Not much, but the run game was solid when it had to be. Ultimately, the tactic didn't work because the defense didn't hold up its end, but Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon were solid tonight.

What Went Wrong

Injuries. Losing Christian Watson on his first touch, both linebackers (Walker to ejection), AJ Dillon for a bit- and Preston Smith late was just adding injury to insult on a tough day in Buffalo. If this team is going to compete, the defense just has to be better. Two meaningless turnovers late in the game did nothing to fix a tough day at the office for Joe Barry's group.

The Packers played half a game yet again. This time they played the second half but the game was over at halftime. Why did MLF wait until halftime to challenge the team to play better? The time to challenge the team was prior to the game. Maybe the Packers would have given a better effort for the entire game rather than for just the half the game when it was too late.

This game proves beyond a doubt that Jones should have been more touches throughout the season. Why did the Packers wait 8 weeks to give Toure a shot? He looks like he can play. He made a great adjustment on the TD. Doubs also had a brilliant TD catch.

Our OL lost the LOS during the first half but they did block better in the second half especially in the ground game. Rodgers can still make the throws if he gets time. The Packers best shot is to run the ball more often and hopefully get the defense to play in both halves. Thanks, Since '61

MLF game script and Steno's inability to to script practice reps effectively are what lost us this game. We ran all game and lost by two scores, AND the entire second half made the running game that much easier with the Bills expecting the pass. God awful take!

You can't go down by three scores in the first half and expect to win many football games.

The game was ugly but I liked what I saw. Being down Watson and Jenkins right off of the bat and eventually down Watkins too, the offense never gave up. The line was not able to hold up in pass protection but they were able to keep lanes free for Jones who ran wild. If the defense played a bit better the running game might have been a viable option. Unfortunately when you give up 5 consecutive scoring drives, the game plan changes. Despite all of it, losing both starting ILB, having a touchdown wiped off of the board on a ridiculous penalty, amongst so many other things, this team played with heart. They never gave up. They kept fighting and the defense punched back with those two interceptions. Jaire Alexander is an absolute baller and has every right to talk. The Bills didn't even attempt a pass in his coverage tonight. They were smart not to. Shout-out to the rookie receivers, they actually made some plays today. Just a shame they couldn't make them over the last few weeks. If you told me the Packers had a chance to make it a one score game or that they would only lose by 10 tonight, I would've been extremely happy with that.

Oh, well.

On to the next one.

The Packers can at least come away with a couple of rookies making some amazing plays for our touchdowns. Doubs Td catch and the pattern run by Toure give us hope for the future. And Aaron Jones came to play. At least we were entertained for a change.

Yet the irony s that, had Watson been on the field, Toure doesn’t get a chance to remind us that hear hot skills and awareness and possibly Doubs isn’t targeted in the end zone. LaFleur is still fighting his roster and when being forced makes us better on the field. That is just not sustainable. We need to learn. Watkins also doesn’t look healthy or able to separate.

Let's just face the facts this team is trash no more hiding it . Blame whoever you want Gute Murphy Lafluer Joe Berry etc It doesn't really matter because they will all be here tomorrow with the same positions.

Now on a bright note hopefully this trash team keeps playing this way because if they lose to the lions they will have serious momentum getting a top 3 pick next yr.

"the defense didn't hold up its end" ????

I'm curious, Tony. Given that the Bills led the league in offense, and given that they were at home, and given that they were coming off a bye week, how many points should we have held them to? 10? 16?

In their two previous home games, they hung 41 on Tennessee and 38 on Pittsburgh.

From my perspective, 27 points is pretty respectable, particularly when you're not getting a lot of help from the offense.

3 points in the second half was genuinely impressive against that O. Doing so with 2 back up ILBs is fascinating and deserves some investigating. We have to do something about the right side of the DL in the run game. That just won’t cut it. Nice to see all the cbs being aggressive in the second half.

What the heck were we doing taking a half to get motivated? I just can’t understand that.

"3 points in the second half was genuinely impressive against that O"

I would agree if Buffalo had any reason to try. I've lost count of the numbers of times the Packers jumped out to a 3 score lead and then coasted on both offense and defense over the last decade +. I never considered what happened in the 2nd half to be a real indicator of anything except the game has to run 60 minutes, even when it is over in 30.

Coldworld, it might have been something to do with the legendary half-time adjustments that never occur. Or Buffalo might have said, "these guys aren't good enough to score 24, so let's just be conservative".

On their second possession, Singletary had a 30 yard run, followed by a 9 yard run. He finished with around 65 yards in 14 carries, so other than those two plays on that one drive, we held him down pretty well.

Allen was their second leading rusher. He's obviously a horse like Roethlisberger was, but he can run, too. On one play Gary was chasing him and not closing ground, and Gary is plenty fast. He looks like the MVP of the league to me at the halfway point. He had a 20 yard scramble, and added 5 more for about another 25. We bounced off him a couple of times when we might have had a sack.

Giving up 107 yards rushing in a half is not winning defense. They haven't stopped the run since week 3. Given who they've played they're not a top 15 defense when they needed to be top 10 to give this team a chance.

"From my perspective, 27 points is pretty respectable, particularly when you're not getting a lot of help from the offense."

And that offense was your dream offense. It looked like the 70s when that thing called the forward pass was an after-thought. The Packers ran for over 200 yards and controlled the clock fairly well. The result was a 10 point loss that was not really an indicator of how badly the Packers lost. And people treating it like some kind of moral victory.

Are the dots connecting for you at all? Do you get how that the margin of error is too small when you try to play the "play good defense and run the ball well" thing without a legit dangerous WR room? Yesterday's game was the NFL showing you that dangerous WR room is required to really compete. Did you see it? Or are you still whistling past the graveyard?

The Bills are the best offensive team in the league, they were at home, they were coming off a bye week. They had scored 41 and 38 in their two previous home outings. Did you think we were going to hold them under 20? Seriously? You did? That's cute.

OK Hank, let's pass more and run less. Chicago....CHICAGO...scored 29 points, on the road. Must be their superduper WRs.

OK, Hank, I want to clear up some confusion here.

"And that offense was your dream offense."

Where on Earth did that come from? MY dream offense. Oh, no.

I would have traded Rodgers. When that didn't happen, I would have put the best offense around him I could, because it doesn't make any sense to bring him back without putting the strongest 19 guys around him on offense each week.

I was the guy doing the "All-Offense" mock drafts. I was the guy wanting offensive linemen in the Top 100. If it had been me, we wouldn't have taken Walker or Wyatt in the draft. We wouldn't have traded up to get Watson.

MY dream offense would have guys who could block, and if I'd give the ball to Jones because when we do, good things happen. So I don't have a freakin' clue as to why you'd say something like this is MY dream offense. Not nearly.

I think we're a better team when we run more and pass less. That's what I've always said. I've also always said "most games are not won, they are lost", and that's exactly what we're doing right now. We are losing games with all these drive killing mistakes. It's not the personnel, or the scheme, as much as it's about the execution, and we just make too many mistakes. If we could stop beating ourselves, we'd be a much better version of ourselves.

What you said is fair, but Buffalo scored on 5 straight possessions to pretty much end the game around halftime. Green Bay isn't built to come back. The defense needed to set a tone and didn't do it. I didn't say they stunk, they just didn't do enough in the first half to keep it close enough.

because the way the Packers are built, and how they were playing, is not conducive to making 17-point comebacks. 30 minutes is enough time for most teams. Not the Packers.

Agree. When half your WR group is out or hurting and you're down to two raw low round rookies, on the road against one of the top defenses in the league, the chances of coming back to win that game is almost non-existent. Which is exactly what happened in this game.

Maybe if the defense hadn't given up 24 first half points and put them in that hole, they would have actually had a chance. How anyone can view that as a respectable defensive performance is beyond me.

Fair enough, Tony. So, in your opinion, what was the maximum number of points we could allow Buffalo to score in the first half (at home, after a bye week) and still be in it? 14? 20? Was it that last score that broke the camel's back?

If you could have placed a bet on holding Buffalo under 30 in that circumstance, would you? I'll tell you, if some time-traveler had told me before the game that Buffalo would finish with 27, I would have been happy. If he had told me we'd be under 20 again, I'd have said "yeah, I figured".

The stat sheet reads like a Packers win. Watching the game you saw a 17-point lead for Buffalo, which I don't think is a stretch to say is pretty insurmountable for this Packers team. I'm certainly not absolving the offense. The Tonyan penalty cost them 4 crucial points. They got stopped twice on fourth down. They needed to convert those plays to be in the game.

But the defense should be the strength of the team and it's kind of not? Buffalo scored on 5 straight possessions. That's not good enough for the Packers to overcome. They needed to be elite and weren't -- mainly because they're just not elite. There is so much invested in this defense and it's not getting close to the payoff.

Buffalo didn't kill them because they didn't need to. They were fine running the ball, and they were fine with Green Bay doing the same. A 17 point cushion when that's how the game is playing out might as well be 50.

I just hope they don't panic now and make a stupid trade by giving up a draft pick for 2023. The way this team looks, it may be a Top 10 pick. This team, packed with overpaid, underperforming egomaniacs, is going nowhere fast. Take their lumps this year, stop overvalueing and overpaying, fix the salary cap situation, and start over. And please get a decent defensive coordinator.

you aren't wrong, and I think that's an important piece to the rebuild - who is evaluating talent for this team? If Savage and Stokes aren't long term pieces anymore, and Wyatt can't even get on the field, then we're suddenly back to needing more top draft picks on the defensive side of the field again. Maybe it's the DC and not a talent issue, but this team has given it their all in terms of building a competitive defense and they just don't have one.

This teams defense has quit playing for Joe Barry. Like his previous stops as defensive coordinator at Detroit and Washington, players question the legitimacy of Barry's coaching (JA) How many games do we have to watch other teams run the ball down the Packer's collective throats? (Reed, Lowry, Mr. Small Pro Kenny Clark) How many games do we have to watch (Stokes, Douglas) playing twelve yards off? How many missed tackles by (Walker, Savage)? This defensive coordinator has lost the trust of his players. Who sets the edge on this defense?

Is Matt Lefleur blind? You hired this idiot. Dump Joe Barry now!

Who drafted this wide receiver made of glass? Shut Watson down before he gets killed on the field.

Why is Amari Rodgers even on the Packers? There is not a single game where he hasn't negatively impacted special teams. Who drafted this slow, small, no hands, muffer?

Now Butkis you coach for Green Bay not Chicago. Since you've taken over the line, this team has forgotten how to pass block. Until today I was certain the line had completely forgotten how to block.

And you Mr. Aaron Rodgers. Cobby should be a receiver coach. Lazard is not a legit number one. Watkins is good for 3 yards oer game. Throw the g-damn ball to Doubs and Toure and your two tight ends. By the way, how old is that fossil playing blocking tight end.

Thank god for Aaron Jones, the only real Packer on the field this year.

If we're talking desired roster changes, I'm going with dumping Amari Rodgers, promoting Juwann Winfree to the 53 and looking for the next Allen Lazard with Winfree's PS spot. Winfree won't be any kind of savior or difference maker. It's just time to accept that Rodgers won't be one either.

While we're on the subject of accepting what players will be, it's time to admit Darnell Savage is not a quality NFL DB. Maybe he can be put on the same flight out of town. Again, they don't have someone waiting in the wings to stabilize the position but they have little to lose by going another direction.

Both of those guys were guys Gute needed so badly, he gave up multiple picks to get them. He also used multiple picks on Jordan Love, Christian Watson and Oren Burks. Maybe if they didn't give up all those extra picks to get guys that are making no contribution, they would have a guy ready t step in and play better.

They need to rebuild after the season. And it should be done by a new GM. It’s also pretty obvious that MLF isn’t anything special. In fact without Rodgers playing at MVP level he’s not impressive at all. I expect more efforts like the Washington game . This was their big national TV Sunday super bowl and they were never really in the game. The deficiencies are too numerous to fix in season. I see a 5- or 6 win team here.
MLFs legacy : blowing back to back #1 seeds with a 2x MVP QB.

I agree 100% on Gute. He needs to go, IMO. He just doesn't understand how to build and sustain success.

I disagree 100% on ML. That the 2x MVP QB was not playing at a very high level before ML arrived on the scene. He was playing like a guy that would prompt a team to draft his successor. Prior to this season, ML has never presided over back to back losses. When Davante Adams' departure left Allen Lazard as the undisputed king of the WR room, the season was domed. No offense to Lazard, who is an ok complimentary player. He's just not someone that makes opposing DCs worry.

Still need a RT.- Please get a veteran. Tom cannot handle the bull rush yet. Jones was terrific. And I loved how Toure gets open.
But the reason he doesn't have Rodgers trust yet, was obvious. He Body catches. And missed a capable ball because of it. Nice TD!

Rebuilding isn't the worst scenario for a fan. The worst scenario is being a team in need of a rebuild and trading away future assets to try and compete today.

The packers have an opportunity to accept reality, realize that there are only two teams with worse records than them in the NFC (and each would give the Packers a run for their money), and chose to end the Rodgers era today. Rebuilding doesn't start in the offseason, it starts before the trade deadline. Sell assets today, plan on being competitive again in 2025. Got to think in those terms - no way Amos or Rasul are on that 2025 roster, so trade them for picks. Aaron Jones will be 30 by then, trade him. Tonyan, Dillon, etc.

The only way a rebuild works is if you embrace it. Packers have been grasping at a rebuild/competing for a super bowl simultaneously for the past three years, which is why this team looks the way it does. Go all in on a rebuild and use the rest of the year to evaluate Love, since that's going to be a massively important decision on how GB spends its first round pick next year. If GB is picking in the top 10 next year and doesn't know whether it should draft a QB, that's going to set this franchise back for years.
