Five Key Questions About the Packers Receivers As Training Camp Gets Underway

Throughout the offseason, many of the biggest questions surrounding the Green Bay Packers centered on the team's wide receivers. Since Davante Adams was traded to the Raiders, critics have wondered if the team had enough quality receivers to help quarterback Aaron Rodgers keep the offense humming at a high level.

Here are five key questions surrounding the Packers wide receivers as we enter the first full week of training camp:

1. Can Allen Lazard Be a Successful Number One Receiver?

Allen Lazard has been a great story since the Packers signed him late in the 2018 season. Lazard has gone from undrafted free agent to starter. His numbers have improved with each passing season and in 2021, he had 40 catches for 513 yards and eight touchdowns. All those numbers were career highs.

Now, Lazard is the favorite to become the Packers top receiver. Lazard has good hands and runs reliable routes and has earned the trust of Rodgers over the past three seasons. He is a big target and is considered one of the better blocking wideouts in the game.

Some critics question whether Lazard has enough speed to be a WR1. They need to remember that Adams wasn't an elite receiver because of his blazing speed. Lazard may not have the speed necessary to be an All Pro receiver, but he certainly has the potential to be the top receiver on this team and to be productive in that role.

In the past, opponents had their top cover corner on Adams which freed up Lazard and other receivers to make plays against other corners. One question is whether Lazard can have success if defenses cover him with their best cornerback or double cover him, something that was rare when Adams was on the field.

2. Can Sammy Watkins and Randall Cobb Stay Healthy?

While the Packers receiving corps is short on experience, they do have two veterans in Sammy Watkins and Randall Cobb. Both players have a proven history of being productive NFL receivers but both also have lengthy injury histories.

Watkins is entering his ninth NFL season. The last time Watkins played every game was his rookie campaign back in 2014. On the positive side, he's only played fewer than 10 games in a season once in his first eight years in the league.

Watkins started training camp on the PUP list but was activated on Friday and has started practicing with the team.

Cobb has a similar record. He has been in the league since 2011 but has not played a full season's slate of games since 2015. But in 11 seasons in the league, he has played 10-or-more games in nine of them. Cobb's smaller build and age make his durability a question.

The Packers need at least one of these two veterans to be available especially early in the season when the rookies on the roster are still adjusting to life in the NFL.

3. How Quickly Can the Rookies Be Ready to Contribute?

The Packers drafted three rookies this year in an effort to replenish the talent level at wide receiver after both Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling departed over the offseason. The key question is when will they be ready to play a substantial role in the offense?

The Packers traded up in the second round to grab Christian Watson. He has great size and outstanding athletic ability but is making a big jump from North Dakota State to the NFL. Watson is also starting training camp on the PUP list and is expected to miss "a little bit of time" during training camp. Obviously, those early reps are important for the development of a rookie receiver.

Romeo Doubs has been a standout in the first few days of training camp. The former Nevada star has made some impressive catches early on but needs to prove he can get it done consistently and during games that count.

Seventh-round pick Samori Toure is also in camp and competing for a job on the roster. He was a deep threat at Nebraska last season and hopes to find a spot on the roster because of his contributions on offense or special teams.

The talent of all three receivers is undeniable but the key question is how quickly can they pick up the offense and adjust to life in the NFL. Most rookie receivers do not make a big impact. Even former Packers stars like Adams and Jordy Nelson struggled in their first few seasons. It would certainly be a boost to the offense if one or more of the first-year players on the roster can make some consistent contributions by the second half of the season.

4. Can Juwann Winfree and Malik Taylor Stick?

Taylor and Winfree have been with the Packers for a few seasons now. Both players have excelled during training camp and in preseason games but have not made large contributions to the offense once the games counted.

The time has come for both these players to prove they can get the job done in September and October and not just in August. If they can, their experience may help them earn a role in the offense. If not, their NFL careers could be in serious jeopardy.

5. Will Aaron Rodgers Learn to Trust His New Receivers?

One issue Rodgers has often had in the past is developing a sense of trust with his young receivers. When the Packers drafted three receivers in 2018, Rodgers was openly critical of all of them during training camp. J'Mon Moore never panned out, Equanimeous St. Brown became a depth receiver and special teams contributor and Valdes-Scantling became a speedster who was either the second or third receiver on the depth chart.

The Packers are hoping that Rodgers can develop a greater sense of trust with the young receivers on the current roster and that it happens more rapidly than it did in 2018. That will only help the offense in 2022.

These are five key questions facing the new Packers receivers group as training camp starts. The Packers are hoping they get positive answers for most of them this season.

What about Amari Rodgers?

Personally, I believe people are setting Lazard up for failure. One of my favorite lunch box type players who performs at or above their talent level consistently because of effort. Lazard even with Rodgers throwing him more passes than he might deserve simply is not a true #1. Time will tell but he simply isn't a #1 but I believe he can be a good #2 WR. I am just hoping if he does not meet fans expectations as a #1 they do not take it out on Lazard.

If Doubs, for example, were to surpass Lazard as a true number one, or Watkins stays healthy and has a renaissance year, we win. Those are unlikely, however, despite Doubs’s showing thus far.

Lazard doesn’t have to be a classic number one. He has to be able to justify regular targets and convert them. We have pieces that we should be able to roll out that compliment him and do together what a number one does. We have speed, size and catching ability. We have players that can be conventional slots. We can move Lazard around.

To do that, we need to be willing to change personnel between snaps, but it can be done. One interesting sub question is, if Lazard is doing something grander, who is doing the blocking among the WRs?

Could that get Watson on the field more early? That would be an ideal way to set Watson up for deep plays from a given formation or to disguise just getting him the ball to run with. Lazard’s blocking has been a key element in this offense and MVS was not bad at it either. If Lazard is the one doing that regularly, it’s going to detract from his yards. Something to watch maybe.

Isn't Watkins considered one of the better blocking WRs too? Think I remember hearing that when he was signed. Getting a quick pass to Doubs in a trips formation behind Lazard and Watkins could be productive, Doubs was a RB in high school.

I like the idea of Lazard and Doubs' on the field at the same time because they both can play in the slot and as the Z receiver. Gives them the ability to motion them pre snap and hunt for matchups. They can do that with Cobb too but Doubs is probably a bigger deep threat at this point.

I found this, according to PFF Watkins is a better run blocker than Lazard.

Agree, particularly with the sub question. Lazard has been one of the best blocking receivers in the game over the past couple of years, so I don't know how much MLF would be willing to tamper with his role--especially with all the newcomers and rookies in the offense.

Maybe a more slightly expanded receiving role is in the cards, but why not keep Lazard mainly doing what he's been doing very successfully?

There's no need to worry about any pecking order as far as the receivers go at this point; if everyone does their job, all Rodgers has to do is hit the open man....LOL, let's see if this theory translates into reality this season.

My question too, as I read the article. Amari showed up ready to go, in great shape. Not read much about him the first 3 practices.

Lots of WRs in camp. Probably an oversight by Gil.

I am expecting Amari to step up this year.

I have Lazard as somewhere between a #2 and a #3. I see a true football player, but I think he has a definite ceiling. [Yes, I know this won't be popular. Love the stat provided by LLC that Watkins is a great blocker. That opens some options up for LaFleur and disguising things.]

1. Can Allen Lazard Be a Successful Number One Receiver?
Depends on the expectation bar level.

2. Can Sammy Watkins and Randall Cobb Stay Healthy?
I wouldn't bet on it.

3. How Quickly Can the Rookies Be Ready to Contribute?
Depends on Rodgers and what is the definition of contributing?

4. Can Juwann Winfree and Malik Taylor Stick?
Time will tell.

5. Will Aaron Rodgers Learn to Trust His New Receivers?
Something about Leopards and spots or perhaps a mid-life crisis to win another SB makes #3 quicker than normal.

I think a better headline would have been "It's Romeo Doubs' world, we're just lucky he lets us live in it." Guess he caught a long one today from Love that he had to make an adjustment on. But then he dropped one and I hurt my ankle jumping off the Doubs' hype train.

Receiver Drops Ball. Sun Rises In the East.

Seriously though, sounds like Toure is starting to make plays and SJC broke up a TD to Cobb too. Still nothing on AmRodgers that I heard

The only thing I've heard on Rodgers is he did a nice job catching a low ball from Love a couple days ago. I think he makes the team but if he wants to see the field he's going to have to make some plays in the preseason games.

I expect that the coaches will have him heavily involved in the preseason. I hope he shines but would not be surprised if he did not. But he is motivated and will do better than last year. Still, I expect that others on the team are better than him right now.

That tweet was meant to highlight the quality, anticipation and placement of the throw—which was low deliberately to ensure only Rodgers could get it apparently.

It’s very early, but I expected Rodgers to be getting snaps at least with the seconds. Sounds like Toure is now getting those and Rodgers is with Etling. That means 2 rookies have supplanted him, 2 UDFAs remain ahead of him (Ok, one is Lazard) and that is while Watson has yet to practice and I don’t think Watkins has run team drills. That’s not very encouraging for a second year draft pick.

I think "which team" (1st team, 2nd team, etc) the players are playing with on day 3 of training camp is probably not that telling.

Coaches put players in all sorts of positions during early camp in order to assess multitudes of items. Sometimes a player is put with a certain squad because they want to test a player on the opposite side of the ball. Sometimes it's because the player they normally have with that squad is being asked to do something else.

Assessment needs takes heavy precedent over symbolic placement at this point in camp. Fans and writers make far to much of who's getting "Starting" snaps or playing with the 2's, etc and so forth.

I would caution about making too much out of any of this until game 3 of preseason.
