I think we need to get a guy for our Dline. We really don't have anything after our top three that we can count on to contribute. I wouldn't be surprised to see a trade for a guy who could give us 30 good snaps per game.

IMO we can't start the season withClark, Lowry, Lancaster, Adams and Keke unless Adams and Keke have improved significantly. The GM is going to have to make a move

Really, Clark is the only bona fide starter on the D-line. Lowry did not play to his contract (he was slightly more than a mobile pylon ) and Lancaster is just a good (bench) player. As for Adams - he has the reliability and performance of a russian Lada. This leaves Keke - whom I have some hope. After that...???

Your opinion on Lowry is not shared by me or the GM. And I’ve never understood why people think it’s possible to have above average players at every position. Lowry is big, durable, and smart and he’s one of the core defenders on the 9th ranked defense. I’m sorry you don’t think he’s worth his contract, but the GM does. So do I.

I'm not sure I agree with your research. How can the Packers be the 9th ranked defense - when they were 26th in run defense and 10th in pass defense?

Also while big, durable and smart are certainly positive traits - being relatively slow, rigid and non-athletic, are not. Also I don't recall, at anytime this off-season, when the GM stated Lowry was worth his contract (or played to it).

Perhaps what we might agree on, is that Lowry is just an average player. So I'm wondering is the average salary for an average D-lineman now over 7m per year? If so, should it be? Or are there better value strategies?

Oh. That .

Bell curve. Of the 64 starting DEs in the NFL, 2/3 are within one standard deviation of the norm. That means about 44 are more or less average. Of the remaining 20, 10 are well above average and 10 are well below.

If you grant that Clark is one of the top 10 DEs in the league, then our Dline is no worse than average, and probably a little better than that, but the starters need more help than they got last year.

We were a bad defense in 2017 and 2018. We were 9th last year. That’s massive improvement, and the players who were on the field for us deserve credit. That includes Lowry and Lancaster and the rest.

A bell curve? I can understand using it if one was a High School teacher grading papers. However I simply referenced several NFL statistical sites - none of which had the Packers as a top 10 overall defense. In fact all had graded the Packers run defense in the bottom third while the pass defense received better ratings - from 10 to mid-pack.

Nov.24 - San Francisco 37 - Green Bay 8
Jan.19 - San Francisco 37 - Green Bay 20
Wondering - shouldn't SF had scored fewer points - against a team that was 9th in points allowed? Most important metric? I think not.

I think the GM was happy to sign Lowry to the contract. He played in every game. He was like 9th in tackles for us. He was on the field for 61% of the snaps and also played 30% of special teams snaps.

So yeah, I think he contributed a lot to our improved defense. Lowry didn’t steal money from us and nobody put a gun to the GMs head.

I don't think 9th in tackles - in which there are 11 men on defense is very impressive. In other words, he was the 2nd least productive player. As for the GM, I'm still waiting for any glowing remarks from him about Lowry's 2019/20 performance.

This is maddening.

The difference between you and me is that I realize I’m nowhere nearly as smart as the people who run this half-billion$ a year business. Now the GM signed Lowry to a second contract before last season. He didn’t just wake up in the morning and decide to do that. I am sure that it was widely discussed by people much more knowledgeable on the subject than you or me.

He played every game and was one of our core defenders. He averaged one less tackle per game than Clark. So that’s the difference between Lowry and one of the top DEs in the league.

When you rank all the DEs in the league according to total tackles. he comes up 20th with 47, just like Nick Bosa. He doesn’t get as many sacks but he helps the Smiths by doing a lot small things you apparently. don’t notice. He bats down passes and makes the QB pull it back which gives us another fraction of a second to reach him. He sacrifices himself on stunts to help clear a pass rush path for others.

You also seem to hold it against Lowry that the organization pays him too much. He’s the 33rd highest paid DE in the league according to Spotrac, and if you want to do the homework I can assure you that he was more productive than a number of the guys who got paid even more.

There are many teams in the NFL who don’t have a better pair of starting DEs. We are fortunate.

Wow - you actually compared Lowry to Kenny Clark. There was no DL in the NFL that got double-teamed more than K.C. @ 75% of the time. Even then he produced one more tackle per game than Lowry. Also K.C. passes the eye-test - even when double-teamed. Lowry does not. Simply he (Lowry) is a lousy run defender. Time and time again he gets stood up at the line of scrimmage - trying to disengage from his blocks (mostly unsuccessfully) - only to catch the wake of the passing ball carrier. As for his contract, there are many NFL players who regressed or did not play to their 2nd contract. Still, I think Lowry should be on the Packers but only as a depth or rotational DE. For the Packers D-line and run defense to improve there must be a better option than Lowry (and even Lancaster). Perhaps Keke is one of the answers. However the Packers will need to find others.

I think the LB position is bare after Adams' arrest. I see at least 1 move on the defensive side of the ball. When will his suspension be, and who will back up Kirksey? Ty summers or Kamal Martin?

Brandi,
I think you confused Montravius Adams (DL who was arrested as above) with Oren Burks. Hopefully 304 lb Adams is not being converted into a secret ILB option by GB because then we definitely are in trouble.

Even by not converting Adams - the defensive centre may still be in trouble. Although the potential cutting of Adams may be addition by subtraction - somehow.

A better choice than Adams - whose comfort zone is on the injury roster (but now adding a new wrinkle to his game with a probable suspension). At least Daniels wants and will try to get on the field.

Supposedly Daniels type were not ideal for Pettine (Multiple) system =Jack of all trades master of none. Our pass rush is better but overall not impressed with it. At least Daniels was scrappy on every play. He worked and had a tough attitude, he is sorely missed. Hope he is healthy this year.

Daniels was in decline before we let him go and admits he struggled to get playing time even when healthy at the end of last season, on an injury ravaged Detroit team. Moreover he really wanted to resign for Detroit until they made it clear that was not going to happen.

Pettine would have to press Gute on that. He's like Ted in that respect, never likes to bring back a player he cut. Some GMs think bring back an older player is a mistake. (I think that's mostly ego on their part) Mark Tauscher and James Jones were brought back under Thompson, so it can be done.

I'd rather see Gute sign Snacks Harrison than Daniels, at this point. Will a move be made for either Snacks or Daniels after the latest antics by Adams? Is Snacks available, yet? I haven't heard if anyone went after him.

We did pick up two low cost players this off season. I think that’s your depth. As far as a big run stopper, usually candidates available at cut down. Harrison wasn’t expected to be able to pass a physical at this point so he may also be an option.

They're onboard to try out for a spot after coming off the scrap heap. Maybe Willis can motivate? Move along nothing to see here, etc...Best to try to get someone for Taylor and a pick. Try to bring in a valid DE/or DT with run stopping ability.
