Draft lookahead: Good things come in fours

There’s a circadian-like anticipation for Packers fans when midday Sunday rolls around. With Round 4 of the draft starting at noon, it will be there this month, too.

There’s a circadian-like anticipation for Packers fans when midday Sunday rolls around. It heightens between the months of September and January, but when April rolls around, it’s there too.

This is in reference to Day 3 of the NFL Draft. Obviously. Action for rounds 4-7 kick off at noon eastern on Saturday, April 29.

While most of the rest of fans around the league tune out during this portion of the draft, dedicated disciples of Titletown zoom in for a closer look. They know that gems are there to be had in the middle and later rounds.

After looking at potential third-round prospects last week, in this post we’ll jump over to the fourth round. Keep in mind this is the same round, in back to back seasons, wherein the Packers selected the anchors of both the offensive and defensive lines. Mike Daniels is the engine of the Packers interior, while David Bakhtiari keeps the coveted superstar quarterback clean.

The following are some players not necessarily expected to have their names called by Green Bay, but who, in one writer’s opinion, would make for good fits with the Packers.

Vince Biegel, OLB, Wisconsin
The connection between Biegel and Green Bay was inevitable the moment T.J. Watt started showing up as popular potential first-round pick. Tear back the layers, though, and it’s just as likely Biegel may have been coveted by the actual Packers front office — and not just the hordes of mock drafters out there. Biegel’s measurables are eerily similar to Clay Matthews. While he’s not the physical replacement for elephant in the Packers’ scheme, he’s a pass-rushing outside linebacker who would provide instant depth with the potential to grow into a solid player. There's not much not to like about Biegel, who has a relentless motor and some of the quick-in-short-space explosiveness that the Packers covet. (See Justis Mosqueda's draft tendencies piece for proof.)

Ahkello Witherspoon, CB, Colorado
Witherspoon is an intriguing prospect who could be in for a rapid rise between now and the draft, but if he survives to the Packers’ fourth round pick — and they haven’t already addressed cornerback in rounds 1-3 — they should seriously consider taking him. What he needs help with can be taught, or more specifically, gained in the weight room. The things you can’t teach, like being 6-foot-3 and having excellent fluidity and instincts, are more important. Witherspoon’s completion percentage against was an astounding 26.5 last season and he was tied for second in the nation with 21 passes defended. Witherspoon shies away from contact in the run game and needs to add weight and strength to his frame, but he has all the other tools.

Danny Isidora, G, Miami
I know, I know. Ted Thompson doesn’t draft guards. But if this year he departs from his standard ways, in Isidora he’d find great value in the fourth round. Isidora is a large human with very good agility and feet. He’s the kinda guard who can work in space and reacts really well at the second level. He needs to continue to polish his pass pro, and he can be overpowered, but if he was perfect he’d be going in the first two rounds. Isidora’s first step, strong lower body and overall athleticism make him worth the investment.

I like Witherspoon quite a bit as a mid round pick. This CB class is so great, that multiple day 3 guys will probably be pro bowlers.

I think Round Four will bring a RB or a swing OG/C prospect.

Three quality players profiled here. I really like Witherspoon's combination of height, vertical and 40-speed. Could be a real valuable piece to cover the outside and deep.
