Day 3 notes from Packers camp

Observational notes from the Packers first full day in pads for 2020's training camp.

Just some stuff I saw today, not meant to be exhaustive in the slightest.

First up, injuries.

Corey Linsley was held out for "precautionary reasons" according to Matt LaFleur. No reason to think its anything serious.

Za'Darius Smith participated early on today, but went inside the Hutson Center at one point and didn't return.

Montravious Adams, who after a bad first rep in team work looked to be rebounding for a pretty good day, appeared to suffer an ankle injury and was taken inside. (UPDATE: NFL Network reports he suffered a sprained toe)

David Bahktiari limped off the field during team work and did not return.

No word from LaFleur on the severity on any of these, though its always a smart play to breathe and hold off on hitting the panic button until we get official word. Camp injuries can look like nothing and be major and can look season ending and turn out to be nothing.

Run game

Both Lucas Patrick and Elgton Jenkins got work at center with Linsley out and both looked good in the run game. When they were on the field together, they were really moving people, especially on runs to the left side.

Aaron Jones displayed perfect vision on one of those runs to the left. He let the wide zone action play out and then planted his foot in the ground and shot upfield for what would have been a big gain. Mid-season form stuff from RB1.

Billy Turner looks a bit more comfortable in the run game than in pass protection when he's at right tackle.

Day for defense

Overall, the defense won this day and it wasn't particularly close in the passing game. They came up with three interceptions of Rodgers (which should have been four but for a Josh Jackson drop) and generally harassed the receivers, many of whom suffered from drops.

Speaking of Jackson, he had a very strong day overall, including one rep featuring really nice coverage of Davante Adams that ended in a pass breakup.]

Not to be outdone, Chandon Sullivan had a another strong day in coverage.

Rashan Gary had a tough pass rush rep in team against Marcedes Lewis, but outside of that he had a pretty strong day. He was in the backfield a bunch and would have had a sack in team if he was allowed to hit the QB.

Too many drops

Marcedes Lewis, Jace Sternberger and a few other guys had bad drops today. Sloppy day for the offense. That said, Robert Tonyan looks legit. He's had a very strong start to camp.

Too many picks

Anyone who has watched Rodgers over the years knows he plays a hell of a lot looser early on in camp than he ever would during a regular season game. Such was the case on one of his three interceptions today when he floated one to Robert Tonyan in the left corner of the endzone in what looked like an attempt to drop it in the bucket between three defenders. Kevin King was in zone coverage underneath and skied to take it away. It's the kind of throw you never, ever see Rodgers attempt when it matters. That said his other two picks today both seemed to be due to miscommunication, especially the first one where it looked like he expected Allen Lazard to break a different way. Adrian Amos made a hell of a play with a diving interception.

Swimming rookies

I can't even imagine what it's like to be a rookie in your first few days of camp, let alone after having no on-field work all offseason. Needless to say, you can see the wheels turning when Jordan Love drops back to pass. He's thinking about a lot and the game is crazy fast for him right now, which is to be completely expected. His fellow draft classmate, Josiah Deguara had an up and down day, at one point falling prey to Rodgers patented hard count and committing a bad false start. But he also displayed some soft hands on a slant in the red zone when Tim Boyle threw a pass a bit behind him. The rookie never broke stride while plucking the ball and streaming into the endzone with some noticeable burst.

I'll try to give you guys these notes every day, obviously there's always going to be a ton that I miss. Be sure to check in on the Cheesehead TV YouTube channel every day for my pre-and-post practice chats.

Interested they are using Deguara a lot. May just want see what he can absorb right now. Tonyan sounds like he is balling could be a solid TE room..

So it seems Chandon Sullivan has been performing well so far, which is nice to see. Playing behind Tramon Williams last season really benefited him.
