Cory's Corner: The Bears Have All The Pressure

You can smell it.

You can hear it.

You can see it.

The Chicago Bears have been talking about the Packers, Green Bay, heck, they’ve probably been talking about cheese curds, Wisconsin’s 15,000 lakes and The House on the Rock.

The funny thing is, the Packers don’t have to say a word about the Bears. The Packers don’t have to do anything until it’s time for kickoff at 3:25 p.m. on Sunday.

That’s because the Bears have all the pressure. The reason is because Chicago has lost eight straight to Green Bay. The last time the Bears beat the Packers was Dec. 16, 2018. Mitchell Trubisky had one of the best games of his career with a passer rating of 120.4 and Aaron Rodgers was sacked five times as the Bears won 24-17.

This is supposed to be Chicago’s time right? Remember how fed up all the Bears fans were when Rodgers correctly said, “I own you,” at Soldier Field? Now, all of that aggression is supposed to come pouring out against a Packers team that is trying to find its sea legs on offense.

We may not know what Jordan Love is, but I’m pretty sure that he is better than a career 59.7 percent passer — which is what Justin Fields has logged after two seasons. He has also thrown 24 touchdowns and 21 picks to go along with an unpleasant 5-20 record.

There’s no question that the Bears have pressure. Their No. 11 overall pick in 2021 has proven that he can dodge and dart with his legs, but Fields has shown considerable problems finding and getting the ball to the open man. The Bears have also shown signs of desperation by giving up a second round pick for Chase Claypool — who only played 48 percent of the offensive snaps in seven games last year.

The Bears know that the clock is ticking. They can smell it. They can feel it. Heck, they can almost taste it. Fields is still on his rookie deal and Chicago has to strike now before they have to open their pocketbook and give him an overpriced contract.

And that’s where the Packers come in. The last time the Bears beat the Packers at Soldier Field in September was Sept. 27, 2010. Jay Cutler somehow had the last laugh in the 20-17 win that Robbie Gould sealed with a 19-yard field with four seconds left.

If Green Bay wins on Sunday, people will raise their eyebrows about Love and this team’s new direction. However, more people will shake their heads at the Bears. The Bears are supposed to rip their northern neighbors. The first ballot Hall of Fame quarterback is gone. Many offensive weapons and even coaches have left.

Yet, deep inside every Bears fan's stomachs is a feeling of doubt. Can Fields make the big play when it matters most? Does he always have to rely on his legs? Will the Bears defense make life miserable for Love?

The Packers came into this season with plenty of questions and yet, we still don’t have many answers about the Bears.

"Yet, deep inside every Bears fan's stomachs is a feeling of doubt. Can Fields make the big play when it matters most? Does he always have to rely on his legs? Will the Bears defense make life miserable for Love?"

It's not doubt Cory, Bears fans KNOW what's going to happen Sunday. Yes Chicago, the big bad bogymen known as Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers are gone, but the 2nd and 3rd questions of the paragraph above, CAN Fields make the big play when it matters most or does he ALWAYS have to rely on his legs, Chicago fans already know...HELL NO!!!

Life miserable for Love? You NEED a Defense to do that!

You've had your offseason to talk shit Bears fans because that's ALL you've ever done since the 1980's! You go through QBs and HCs like no other and it's NOT changing this year... I'd imagine you'll be looking next year again for BOTH.

I just spent $399.00 for NFL Sunday Ticket go make sure I could watch the NEW owner of the Chicago Bears, Jordon Love, whoop your ass...Just like 4 and 12 did before him.

It starts all over here and now.

Own the Bears!

I don't know how much value there is in their stock, but they can't hurt the Packers' stock.

I think it's very true that there is more pressure on the Bears, even though they are only a 1.5 point favorite, which is about the difference that home field advantage gives an NFL team. (It's less than it used to be.)

Even though this is Jordan Love's NFL debut and Justin Fields is beginning his third year as a starting QB, it seems to me like Fields is just as much of an unknown factor as Love. For the first time, he supposedly has a legitimate #1 WR to work with in D.J. Moore, and at some point one would think that Fields has to start playing in a more conventional style. Will he do that in this game, and if so, how good will he be at it? He was considered to be a really good passer coming out of college. It hasn't happened for him at the pro level, but maybe it still could. The light went on for Josh Allen in his third season. For now, I'd like to see the Packers focus on containing him and trust their secondary to maintain coverage.

Greg, great point at the end of the post. Keep jfields in the pocket, make him beat you with his arm.
He's proven he can do it with his legs, never his arm. We have to contain him and tackle him.
tight coverage and catch the errant passes.
sounds easy, god I hope our D can do it.

Put Jaire on Moore and he'll shut him down and might get a couple pics. This defense will dominate as long as they can stop the run.

For all true Packers fans, there is just one question, and one answer.

Q: Do the Bears still suck?

A: Yes. Always have, always will.

All I have been seeing the last couple of weeks is the Bears are going to be great and whatnot. Bears fans have been chirping a lot. I usually ignore most of it, but I have seen a lot more of it lately. Which I do also believe part of it is because they are feeling the pressure that they have to be good. Its that little brother syndrome. Where they are always trying to beat the big brother.

This first game will mean a lot for both teams I believe. The Bears are trying to prove they can win with Fields. He is trying to prove he can be a winning QB in this league. They were the worst team in the league last year and are trying to take a step forward. While GB is in a big transition. Switching over from their latest HOF QB, and a quite a few other veterans for a younger team. Both teams have a lot to play for.

It should be fun to watch. My hope is Love settles in. I am sure he will have a lot of nerves early. But my hope is he settles in and we can see his talents.

One thing I am really looking forward to seeing is how they look in week 1 vs how each team looks in week 18. It will be fun to see the progress of both teams throughout the year.

Not just the Landlord QB is gone but "Many offensive weapons and even coaches have left."

Lazard? OK. Solid pro. Cobb? Um, well a weapon of sorts, I guess. Solid former pro. Big Dog? Bulldozer blocker but an offensive weapon? No.

What coaches have left besides Jerry Gray?

Outside of the first ballot HOFer Rodgers, I don't think the bares should take much encouragement (if any) from lost offensive weapons and coaches from 2022.. If anything, the 2023 major playmakers remain and their ranks have been heavily reinforced.

Their focus will, and should be attacking Barry's defense. Here I still have some hesitation but have hope Barry has received the gift of Wisdom.

There's a lot of pressure on each team to play well on Sunday and start fast, but not much outside their own fan bases.

What we don’t have this year is a Lack of continuity.
Particularly with the OL. So run the ball.
The Bears DL is a work in progress.
But everything else about their defense is pretty solid.
And if Love & Company can’t pick up the blitz packages.
The bears will win this game. So run the damn ball.

For the Bears, the opener is a home game against a division opponent. If you can't win at home against teams in your division, you can't win the division. So yeah, all the pressure is on Chicago. For Green Bay, this is an excellent opportunity to win a road game against a division opponent....the sweetest type of win.

Big Game. Win this one and it can be Holiday Road:

VS Lions on Thanksgiving Day. Then New Years Eve vs Vikes.

Goal 1: Win the Division.

This should be a fun year of Packer Football.

Have a feeling the Pack will hold Bears at 10 points or under and score at least 27.

I believe Love will look like a HOF qb against a weak Bears defense. No pass rush and bad coverage will be the norm on Sunday. A heavy does of AJ and Dillon and even Wilson will keep Soldier Field very quiet.

You can't underestimate how much pressure is on fields because of his contract. He won't get huge extension if he can't throw the ball.
I think he's going to be trying, maybe even pressing, to make perfect passes.
Here's where good corners and safeties come in. cover and catch the wayward balls.
fields may be selling insurance (no offense intended to any insurance reps) by this time next year if we keep him in the pocket and pick off his bad throws.
Those outcomes will only magnify his pressure as the season goes forward. If he spirals, which I can get behind, he may not be qb1 by the time we see them in January.

The last good QB the Bears had was Jim McMahon and Charles Martin took care of that. For the last 35 years they have gone through QB's lke water through a sieve while the Packers have had 2 Hall of Famers. Bears are talking shit hoping Love is not #3.

Corey's right, I think. In terms of fans' expectations, Packer fans are optimistic and realistic: Love and the team have the ability, and reaching the playoffs, though not a lock, is possible. Bears' fans, on the other hand, are showing a curious mix of hope and fear; no HOFer to torture them, true, but there is really no evidence that their own team is any good at all.

Being Bears' fans and thus used to dashed hopes, crushed dreams, and self-delusion, they're in full voice about a whole new era and the glory just around the corner. Packer fans, meanwhile, will be watching our young team's debut with reasonable if cautious confidence in the defense, Love, and the young receivers.

And there it is: in Chicago they're thinking about winning the division on Sunday and in GB we'll be watching the season opener. No matter how it turns out, there will be near hysteria in Chicago and merely thoughts about week two in GB.

Well, to be fair, they have a new GM and they added a ton of new pieces in the off season, both in the draft and some key free agents. They might have some hope. Their new GM didn't draft Fields, so maybe he doesn't last much longer after going 5-20 in his first two seasons and running more than throwing.

I remember in 2009, just after the Bears acquired Cutler, even after Rodgers had played a season, Bears fans were absolutely convinced that Cutler was going to be better than Rodgers. Typical Bears Fan said Rodgers might be OK, but Cutler was the real deal, the next Brett Favre. I'm reading the bravado on various forums now, Fields is the real deal, but Love is just going to be OK.

Fields still locks on one target, if that target is wide open he'll throw it, otherwise he just takes off running. He's still playing like he did at Ohio State, except he doesn't have 3 NFL quality receivers facing college cornerbacks.

Fields BARELY survived last season running the ball. He was getting beat up bad and could barely finish the games. He will try to look to throw more and even this pre season, did not do anything of any significance. The Bears O line is a wreck and he will be running for his life again this year. Gary, Smith, Enagbare, Cox, Van Ness will have a field day on Sunday I believe. GPG!

I agree Cory—the pressure clearly rests on the Bears. Not including Packer Nation, expectations are low for us. Bear fans are wringing their hands concerning Fields and have visions of Turbisky in their dreams.
We Packer fans are quietly optimistic and feel like there is a whirlwind about to be unleashed on the NFL.
Go Packers!!!
