Cory's Corner: All You Have To Do Is Believe

The Packers offense finally came back to life. All it needed was a speedy second round pick.

That is what had been expected all year. This is the Packers that I thought they could be.

Green Bay’s offense was brought back to life with a 31-28 overtime win over the Cowboys to snap its five-game losing skid.

“Man,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur after the game. “It’s been a long time to stand up here and have a smile.”

The Packers turned those frowns upside down and they did it by believing in a rookie wideout. Christian Watson, who dropped a surefire touchdown in the season opener vs. Minnesota, was tabbed by many Packers fans as a bust.

As if that wasn’t enough, the second rounder from North Dakota State missed three games this year to hamstring and concussion issues. Watson tallied seven targets in the previous four games and on Sunday, he had eight.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound receiver turned what had been a lifeless receiver room into an explosive display of fireworks. Watson had four catches for 107 yards and three touchdowns. The best part was that the Packers never flinched after he dropped a pass in the first quarter. “Hey, we’re coming back to you,” said LaFleur.

Those little comments matter to a young player. They need to know that everything is OK even when they make a mistake. Most importantly, they need to know that the offense isn’t going to stop believing in their new offensive weapon just because of a drop.

“We’ve seen what we can be, and we’ve seen it was only us getting in our own way,” said Watson. “All we had to do was believe.”

Judging from the Lambeau Field crowd, there wasn’t a lot of belief left. Blue and silver dotted the stadium to see a team that many thought could compete for a deep playoff run. Since 1998, the Cowboys are 3-10 in the postseason, only advancing to the NFC Divisional Playoffs.

So what does that win mean? I’ve said all season that the winning recipe was if Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon got 30 touches. On Sunday, they notched 39. Those two are what will keep this offense humming.

And it sure helps when you’ve got a turbo engine at wide receiver that cannot be caught from behind. Watson’s game just opened up the play-action. It will force teams to at least respect the pass that now has some much-needed spice. The average yards after the catch against the Giants (6.0), Jets (3.8), Commanders (5.2), Bills (5.5) and Lions (4.8) was pretty pathetic. On Sunday, the Packers tallied 6.6 yards after the catch and that includes the 0.3 from Sammy Watkins and the 1.0 from Marcedes Lewis.

Well, we learned that it matters to have belief in young receivers and we also learned that Watson might have put some needed respectability back into the passing game. His speed and size are coveted attributes for a No. 1 wide receiver.

Watson has proven that he can be counted on to be the guy.

You just have to believe.

Watching Sundays game, especially later in the 3rd and 4th quarters, was when Rodgers was under center AND whether it was play action or he handed the ball off, IT WORKED. By that time in the game the Cowboys were afraid of Watson getting behind them while being concerned of Dillon running over them (finally) or Jones around them.

Now, will Rodgers and the Packers continue to play this way? Will Rodgers be okay completing 14 of 20 passes for 224 yards? Hell, that's normally what he'd put up in a half most Sundays (well maybe not this year) but my point is, this HAS to be the way the Packers play offense.

Watson is going to drop more passes, we KNEW that when he was drafted. But Rodgers HAS to continue to do what he did Sunday and if he does, good things will happen. Now whether it was Rodgers actually believing in Watson or he was just out of options (literally) and had to throw the ball to him, Rodgers needs to do EXACTLY what was done on Sunday. Not just the rest of this year. But next year as well if he is still here.

Enjoying the moment! Watson playing well in the Dallas game wasn't that important. What the performance showed was Watsons immense talent and the Packers have a super star talent if he can stay healthy.

Yes, and just think if Rodgers and Watson practiced together in the offseason, OTA's, pre-season? Can't help injuries but being in synch and helping the young man's confidence and routes this breakout game should have happened much earlier this season, as well as with Doubs & Toure. The Packers season would be much different and not in doubt.

Watson was always seen as a raw talent and then his injuries put him behind Doubs, who has less physical talent but was more NFL ready. There are only 4 rookie WRs ahead of Doubs in receiving yards this season, then Watson follows Doubs. So GB has the 5th and 6th best rookies in terms of yards, without having a first round pick. Seems to me like they did fine bringing these guys along. And Doubs and Watson are tied for second in scores with 3 each. None of the first round picks at WR have more scores than Watson or Doubs. I don't see how people can complain about the rookie WRs being used. They have been using them.

WC,
Apples & oranges and impossible to fairly gauge. I'd say one really has to look deeper at things like minutes played, pass opportunities & reception percentage. Some of those other WR's likely ended up on teams where they were not needed right away. The Packer WR's were put in a must play and perform situation and on a team with one of the worse passing offenses. That is not complaining! It is simply factual. The Packer WR's and offense could have been more productive sooner, which is my point and has contributed to the team being 4 & 6 virtually out of playoff contention.

All it needed was a speedy WR. Cory; it's needed that for a long time. And if the packers get the chance. Draft another! Injuries happen. Watson was an inspiration. The speed was obvious. And if there is another Watson in the coming draft. The packers better take him.

"Draft another!"

Exactly!
The Packers WR issues have happened because they stopped drafting WR's.

Under Thompson he drafted a WR with a 2nd or 3rd round pick in his first 4 drafts. And 4 in his first 6.
2005 Terrence Murphy (2nd round). 2006 Greg Jennings (2nd round). 2007 James Jones (3rd round). 2008 Jordy Nelson (2nd round).
2011 Randall Cobb (2nd round).

But after Cobb he didn't draft another WR high until 2014 when he took Davante Adams (2nd round). 2015 they did take Ty Montgomery in the 3rd round. But the next WR they took high was in 2018 and that was Jmon Moore in the 4th round. (got MVS in the 5th round that year).
And since then they didn't draft a WR high until they took Amari Rodgers in 2021 with a 3rd round pick and then this year they took the WRs.

The problem with the WR position is they haven't invested enough high picks into it. We have no idea how much longer Rodgers will be around, but regardless of whether he is here or not, they need to keep the WR group loaded! For Rodgers the older he gets the more talent he needs around him. And for a young guy whether its Love or someone else, it will make things easier for them if the group is loaded.

I think it was Return_to_Sanity that pointed out that the top two passing attacks in the league (Buffalo and Kansas City) don't have a single first round WR between them. Having good WRs is important, but they don't necessarily have to come from high draft choices. I like what Gute did this year - a second rounder, a fourth rounder and a seventh rounder. All three may work out nicely.

We don’t need all speed, but we need to use the speed we have. Cobb/Watkins/Lazard do not have enough. Doubs continually catching near the line of scrimmage wasted his. Toure has shown enough too, might have had a big one but for the sack on Sunday.

Stretch the D vertically and have more than one threat to run after the catch or get behind the D, then actually send them sometimes. We’ve been ridiculously cautious while being run averse too. Lo and behold, stretch the field and Lazard and Watkins start to get open too, especially if the run can’t be ignored. That’s how complimentary pieces thrive.

I agree we need to keep a WR coming in each year. I personally think that Watson, Doubs and Toure will prove to be a great WR draft, but we need to move on from all others but Lazard. If we’d had a better and more aggressive coach willing to take risks and feed the talent despite inevitable setbacks, we’d be a lot better for it.

Perhaps it took Rodgers time to come around to that, but he’s there now it seems. Put the playmakers out there and stick with them and the run. Who knows, we might have a chance to score a few. When that happens teams win games. LaFleur never gave us a chance once tesms figured out that he really was so cautious.

Guam,

Correct, you don't have to add first round picks to the position. But you have to invest into it. I consider anything in rounds 1-4 as investments into it. Anything beyond the 4th round is more of a flier on a guy. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't.

Buffalo traded for Diggs, They drafted Gabe Davis in the 4th round. They also drafted Dawson Knox in the 3rd round.
The Chiefs drafted Harman and Skyy Moore in the 2nd round. They signed MVS. The brought in Smith-Schuster, and just traded for Toney. They drafted Kelce in the 3rd round as well.

Both teams invested into their receiving positions. The Packers simply haven't been doing that enough over the last decade.

That is why I think its important for them to keep reinvesting into the position. While Watson and Doubs have bright futures and I like Toure, they can't simply say we are good to go now. No, we need to keep investing into it. You never know with injuries and whatnot what will happen.

RC, they also drafted Ty Hill in the 5th round and he was the best of all of them. Point is, you find players where you find players. Where theyre drafted is irrelevant. Yeah Hardman and Moore are 2nd round picks, but Hardman has mostly been a disappointment and Moore has done nothing of note yet. Its what they become after theyre drafted that matters most and you never know who will progress to that level or not. All they can do is keep taking swings at it. But on a different but somewhat related topic, how good could this offense have been in previous years when they had Adams and MVS if they had just built their offense around running and playaction like they did vs the Cowboys? Imagine Adams getting a bunch of 1 on 1 looks out of playaction cuz the run game is killing defenses. Wouldve been unstoppable. Personally, I think they would have won at least the last 2 super bowls if not the last 3. The problem with this team was never personnel. It was always philosophical.

Apologies RTS! I fixed the attribution and will try to do a better job going forward (senior memory permitting....). Your point is a very good one - you find players where you find them.

I agree with RCPackerFan that the Packers need to invest a little more in the WR/TE position, but I would prefer to see those positions come from the second round and later. There are fewer big guys than little guys and Ilike to see the first rounder devoted to the trenches.

SH,
I am in agreement! The Packer 3 rookie WRs are going to be much better next year, but they need at LEAST one more talented WR in the first two rounds of the draft. Because I am not optimistic the Packers will resign Lazard with the cap issues I'd also like them to draft a 2nd WR mid-round.

So is Watson still a bust like many have said?

I agree with Rodgers that Watson may have alleviated some demons on that 58 yard TD. He had 3 huge catches after that. He was a huge reason why the Packers won. His speed and play making ability were on show. It will be interesting to see how teams respond to him. Because he is a legit threat. This could open up the offense for others as well.

But what set up Watson to having a monster game was the run game. The play action passes were working great. And they were working great because Jones and Dillon were averaging 5 yards per carry plus. And a reason why they were running so good is because the OL was creating good holes for them. This was the first game all year that the preferred starting 5 played the entire game. The OL is the key to this offense. Keeping them healthy and keeping them on the field will only make our offense better. Hell I will say that keeping players healthy is the key to this offense. The OL, and WR have had way to many injuries.

Some good news is that Cobb will be returning. That will only help the offense.

Back to Watson. You can see why the Packers traded up to draft him. His ability as an explosive playmaker changes the offense. If he can stay healthy he has such a bright future. And speaking of the future. Have to love the future of our WR position with Watson, Doubs, and Toure.

"But what set up Watson having a monster game was the run game". Precisely RC! Watson is a needed field stretcher, but it is the rushing attack that provides the needed balance to get Watson open. It is complimentary offensive football - the running game pulls the safeties down and allows Watson to go over the top or Watson keeps the safeties deep and allows the run game to go. Both halves are needed to make the offense go.

Exactly Guam. Its complimentary football. And for the first time this year they actually played complimentary football.

It will only help the offense if teams decide to start doubling up Watson or trying to keep a guy deep so he doesn't burn them. The great part about Watson is he isn't just a one trick pony. He can be used in other ways too. if he can stay healthy and on the field, he makes this offense better.

Watson is a limited trick pony at this point. He’s not great at routes and particularly complex ones yet. That said, he doesn’t need to be to help. He just needs to be used smartly. The thing I’ve been waiting for was not the long bomb, but the deep cross route. That’s a route he ran a lot in college, that suits him and he’s comfortable with. Giving him all the help one can to succeed is coaching 101. Damn shame we couldn’t start out with that in mind or do similar things for Doubs and Toure.

Left to me, if healthy, our WRs should start with all 3 rookies plus Cobb and Lazard. There should always be at Least 2 rookies in 3 receiver looks. Never be more than 2 of the vets if we go 4. We would be better, have more speed and more sources of threat and thus help the RBs, OL snd the score line. Yes, there would be drops, but also more opposed more from them when made. It’s not like The veterans other than Cobb have not made plenty of errors. Play to win not to not be bad. Play to pressure your opponent, not invite them to pressure our OL.

These positive outcomes are all connected to the O line being healthy and in synch. The tragedy for the first phase of the season was the disfunction of the line play. OT was needed from the early picks, but water under the dam. Will this team stay together and feed off the mojo?? Jaire was bringing leadership for the D. Do not see any value of Savage on the field. Barry has to go 4 down linemen to contain Henry. Maybe he should review Pettine's scheme from the 2020 contest.

The OL and its importance can never be overlooked, which is why everyone constantly screaming for a top tiered WR makes it bizzare. The Packers can have one of the best QB's (which they do), and fantastic WR's but without a good OL the are almost worthless.

I feel the team has invested a lot of draft capital there over the years, but every year I find myself saying in the 1st round draft a LT, a DL, or an Edge rusher. Very hard to find room in the 1st round to take that WR when those critical big men are sitting there. I want another top WR but not at the expense of a very good OL who is a difference maker. One who can pass block, but who can also move the pile on that 3rd or 4th and one. I fully understand why the team drafts their WR's in round 2 & 3, which is because those elite OL are gone by then.

The O-line is the secret sauce. We've been waiting all year for consistent line play. Now, if they can play together for a couple weeks in a row, the run feeds the passing game, and the passing game respect opens up the running game too. 20-30 passes a game works and saves the O-line. Have to execute in both phases for it to work. They also didn't have too many drive killing penalties. Opposing Ds in the NFL are going to always have some game wreckers making plays but, this week they were able to overcome them, and they didn't shoot themselves in the foot enough to kill the game. Close though. Did you guys see some of the pick-up blocks Dillan did to save plays? Eventually he'll be able to sneak out more than he has and open other opportunities.

The D will feed off good O play too (as we've already seen.

Now rinse and repeat. Go win one at a time! Thursdays suck for both teams but, especially for the away team. No excuses.

What it needed was a pair if RBs averaging 5+ yards a carry a red zone and another reception and Rodgers just telling LaFleur to shove it after a half with 6 passes, 4 completions.

Then, despite very cautious calls, Rodgers just let the run continue (hallelujah) and went for the one deep route. On Sunday, Rodgers had time was accurate from the start (credit to the OL) and Watson stayed healthy and caught some luck and then two more balls after their D packed the box.

If the O line holds up and we can run like that and Rodgers let’s us and is on target and we throw to the rookies until they catch while getting yards running in between then we have a chance. We always did. We instead played 5 yard ball till it failed. LaFleur tried to again last week. Rodgers seems to have realized that talent is a better option even if unpredictable than just waiting for a drive to stall or going with safe but futile.

Chalk that win up to Ford, RBs and Rodgers in spite of LaFleur in the second half. Inconsistent raw but talented id better than not talented enough. Wish our HC had figured that out in spring, let alone September. Pretty pathetic when his QB had to fight his calls to do it in November.

What I am most excited about is the passion the Packers played with. They looked like they want to win, and they looked like they were a team, building each other up to win. That is what this sport is about. Rodgers has shown by his willingness to commit to the run that he still wants to win, and that he is willing to be a team player too.

The offensive line was the unsung hero. The Cowboys lead the NFL in sacks, but they largely kept the Cowboys’ D quiet. I don’t think I heard Micah Parsons’ name called. Jenkins did allow the one sack, but David Bakhtiari is still the best LT in football aside from Trent Williams.

What scares me, though, is the absence of pass-rushers. In Gary's absence, we only have 3 OLBs on our active roster - Garvin, Enagbare, and P. Smith. That isn't enough. Our pass-rush was not good on Sunday (although the Cowboys have an incredible O-line), and we need more depth. I think that the Packers should use their roughly 5.6 million of cap space to sign free-agent EDGE Benson Mayowa. He is by far the best option on the FA market, and he had 13 sacks, 37 pressures, and 5 forced fumbles from 2019-2020. In 2021, he was mis-utilized by the Seahawks and played ILB, not his natural position. I think that it would be a low-risk, high reward move that, at worst, would add some stability and another man to the pass-rush. Of course, it would just be a band-aid on the deep cut that is the loss of Gary, but I think that it's better to do something than nothing.

Additionally, I think we could play McDuffie more as an ILB and play Walker more in the pass rush, both inside blitzes and from the edge, where he can use his speed to bend around. I would also like to see more sets with 3 and 4 D-lineman, which I saw on Sunday. This will help against the run and alleviate the loss of Gary even more. I also want to see more of the sets where 3 defensive linemen line up on one side and one lines up on the other. Those seem to work.

Going forward, I think that their blueprint to win should be something like what the Giants are doing right now. Run the ball first, and set up passes off of play action. Defense comes up with stops and key plays when it matters most. The Titans will be a tough team to beat on Thursday, but they are dealing with injuries, and I think with home-field advantage, the Packers can win. The Eagles’ weakness, as I saw on Monday, is stopping the run. If they can stick to the run, use it to set up the pass, and come up with some defensive play-making, they will have a fighting chance of pulling off an upset.

"but David Bakhtiari is still the best LT in football aside from Trent Williams."

Didn't you want Bakhtiari and Aaron Jones benched before the game for "business reasons"? There is no way they win that game with those two on the bench.

I look forward to becoming a believer again...as soon as the Packers are a game over 500 with at least a few contests left in the disappointing season.

The problem is that to believe us to accept that it took Tidgers to overcome LaFleur to show ambition. The problems are still there, we just overcame ourselves last time. We are 1 and 1 since Rodgers decided 3 yard ball wasn’t going anywhere. Can we continue to run and to run successfully on teams? We didn’t in Detroit.

I’m invested in Watson’s success as I have his jersey. Would hate to have to put it away with my J’Mon Moore jersey. Really glad for the kid.

Looks like you could actually see his confidence grow with each catch. The team was picked up as well. Football isn’t always X’s and O’s or even the player’s skill sets…the emotional aspects of the game are huge.

He's already exceeded J'mon Moore. Just keep the kid off the IR.

It was only one game but Watson's talent is obvious. I've been a Gutey fan and remain one (the MM and Rodgers contract aside), so does anyones perception of Gutey change? Besides the 3 rookie WR's there is a LOT of young talent on this team. I believe Gutey has done a very good job. He just won't have salary cap flexibility for several years to pick up select FA's. I also think if Love shows he is talented that will change some perceptions.

Gutey is a boss. I dont care what anyone says about him. What you saw Sunday was HIS vision for this team. The pieces HE acquired finally being used as envisioned. Thats the kind of offense this team needs if it wants to win home playoff games in january and/or a super bowl. Gutey learned from the endless playoff disappointments where the finesse offense repeatedly got manhandled by dominant defenses. So he built a bully to punch the bullies right back. Theyve been capable of playing thia kind of football for years too. Its just a shame it took them so long to realize it.

Just saw a stat that even with this last game Rodgers is only 15-16% under center this year. Thumb? Line play is looking up if they can stay healthy.

All well and fine, but when draft time comes around, we're going to need another reasonably speedy wide receiver for insurance purposes at a minimum. If Watson is forced to miss time again, we do not want to be going back to square one again when opposing defenses don't respect a deep threat and load up closer to the LOS.

If you run more, and pass less, it opens up the play action. This is Football 102.

When we line up 3 WRs, the opponent almost has to play nickel, which leaves them with 6 run defenders on the field matched up against our offensive line and Marcedes Lewis. That is good math for the Packers to run. If we're successful, they have to commit another body to the run, which leaves them guarding 3 WRs with 4 guys, and that's going to improve the chances of getting somebody open downfield.

It all works together. Run more, pass less. We passed 20 times and scored 31 points. Chicago, this past week, passed 21 times and scored 30 points. You do not have to throw the ball 30-35-40-45 times a game to win.

Did you see that the Packers pulled the plug finally? They just released Amari Rodgers and Hill. Didn't see them going that far, especially releasing Hill after he just got back.

Wonder what they have planned. Have to be making some kind of move.

Two guys in their second year. You don't release Day 2 picks who still have two years on their contract unless you have a very compelling reason, and I think in Rodgers case, they did. I'm not sure why Kyrin Hill is gone, but apparently the coaches didn't want him around anymore.

I'm not sure they have a move planned. This might just be a case of the coaches sending a message to the rest of them.

It was good to see the Packers OL take over the game in the 4th quarter and then continue into the OT.

Wish we had a full week to prepare for the Titans but at least we're playing at home. We will need to execute a similar game plan against them and keep Derrick Henry off the field for as long as possible. Thanks, Since '61

Watson was healthy for this game. Prior to that game he had a very difficult time staying on the field. Priority one is keep healthy so you can do your job.

He had a good game, no doubt. But don't forget about his early drops before he changed gloves and caught three touchdowns.

At the end of the season we'll track his record. Think Justin Jefferson as a comparison.

He definitely needs a ton of work with the JUGS machine. Even the balls he did catch just looked akward. Its no surprise he drops so many balls cuz his technique sucks. But the good news is, thats correctable.

Rodgers didnt deserve to be cut. Bemched from special teams, yes. But they still couldve used him on offense. Especially with Doubs out and who knows how long Cobb will stay healthy for.

I just looked up the combined W-L records of the teams we played so far:

54-39 for a 72.2 winning percentage. And that "easy" part of the schedule against the Giants/Jets/Wash? 18-10. Not sure what to glean from that, but maybe our 4-6 record isn't quite as terrible as it looks on the surface.

I attended the game…spending all of my retirement funds at the Pro Shop. Oh well, I got the Packer helmet decal I needed.
Our fans were enthusiastic; energetic; loud—my most memorable game I’ve ever attended—I go once per year.
We all witnessed it — early on the Cowboys had no respect for our passing game, squeezing the box with 8 and 9 defenders. Then suddenly, for all to see Watson becomes James Lofton (I’ve always compared him to Javon Walker).
I’m curious what we will see by the Titans defense—will they squeeze the box?
In any case, we have a recipe for success—keep it rollin!
And, one more thing. Mason no longer kicking off—good call.
Go Packers!!
