Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - How I Spent My Summer Vacation

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Hello all - I'm back from vacation with 15 stitches in my head and a horrible-looking black and blue that goes from my right hip to my knee. Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?

So last Friday I'm packing the car up for the two hour drive "down the shore. The vary last thing I'm bringing down is the luggage. I start to navigate the six steps from my laundry room down to the garage and somehow got my feet tangled up and I started to fall. Normally, I would have reached out for the banister or the garage door frame to keep me upright, but I had both hands full of luggage, the weight of which just accelerated my head-first fall down the steps. My split second thought was to just fall on top of the luggage. That was probably not a bad idea, but on the way down, my head struck the L-shaped bracket that holds the automatic garage door safety sensor. The resulting triangular shaped gash in my head unleashed a torrent of blood onto the garage floor.

I was a bit stunned at first, but managed to get up and make my way up to the kitchen sink where I grabbed some paper towels and called out to my wife,  She comes running down and reels in horror at what she sees. I assure her I've got the bleeding under control, but driving me to the emergency room is now on her to-do list. As we head down to the garage there's a pool of blood on door mat to which my wife says, "my God, it looks like a crime scene!" Which it did, but likely having watched to many thriller movies. my wife's first instinct was to destroy the evidence. She runs back and grabs paper towels and starts cleaning the mess. All while I'm standing there holding paper towels to my head waiting to go to the emergency room. Um, Honey, do you think you can worry about that later and get me to the hospital?

Anyway, so she gets me to the emergency room where a Physician's Assistant (PA) checks me out and says she'll stitch it up, but first I should have a CAT scan. So we do that and sit there waiting for the results for about 90 minutes. When it finally comes, the test confirms that I do, in fact, have a brain (take that, haters!), and fortunately there's no skull fracture or other serious damage - just a really nasty looking triangular hole in my scalp. The PA says she'll be back to stitch me up. Naturally, it was a busy Friday afternoon on the in the emergency room, with the guy in the next room having broken his finger punching a wall, the woman two rooms down was suffering from extreme constipation and who knows what all the other people in the ER had done to themselves that day.

So thirty minutes later the PA returns and sets everything up that she's going to need to stitch me up. She examines the wound more carefully and I hear a long "Hmmmmmmmmm," which I knew immediately was not a good thing. She tells me it's not a cut and dried (no pun intended) stitch job and she would feel better having a plastic surgeon look at it. The plastic surgeon is in his office 30 minutes away, so she takes some cell pics and sends them over to him. Another thirty minutes later, I'm told that he will have to do the stiches and will be on his way in an hour when his office closes. Ninety minutes later he walks in, puts in 17 stitches and goes on his way. The paper work comes a short time later and I'm finally out of there, six hours later.

We decided to stay home for the night and drive down the next day. The good news was I didn't have to carry any luggage to the car since I'd already thrown it down there, and I was able to drive the two hours without any real issues. The bad news was that both the  PA and the Plastic Surgeon both told me I should avoid the sun, sand and surf - perfect for a beach vacation! Truth be told, I'm not really a beach guy anyway, so I didn't have a problem staying back in our nice AirBNB as the de facto babysitter for my two youngest grandchildren while they took their daily naps at different times. I sat back, enjoyed reading my latest book (The Boys in the Boat) and explored various Spotify playlists. It was honestly the most consecutive relaxing I've done in a very long time, so the story does have a happy ending.

Sorry for the lack of anything Packers-related this week, but I purposely paid little attention to what was going on and as I suspected, there really isn't much to talk about anyway. I promise to be back with some Packers content next week.

Go Pack Go!

I'm glad you survived it all with your sense of humor Al. I'm glad you're okay though, a fall at our age usually results in broken bones. I recently took a spill on my E-bike and broke a rib. Just glad it wasn't a hip!

Your day sounded like something I would have happen to me. I've actually had the same type of "emergency" treatment experience. Glad you're ok.

We've just been rehashing everything over and over again here anyway. Yesterday, Corry did another good one about Jordan Love's contract situation, but I'm sure we'll go over that again soon, so you'll be able to catch up. Dusty's play work is about the closest thing we have to real football right now. Hope you can convince him to keep plugging along on those in his spare time. I learn so much from you guys.

Two more weeks till camp and I can't wait!

Al glad you are back and feeling better and that you enjoyed your vacation or at least made the most of it.

Do not worry I have had maybe 5 concussions (not all diagnosed because it was before they took them seriously) and I can find a few people that will say I am normal. No I do not pay them to say that.

So I believe the Packers have delayed signing Love to a new contract to make sure you were back from your vacation so you could write about it. So now they waited for you to tell the story of your mishap before they signed Love. So with the vacation and mishap over they will sign Love to a contract.

Remember? The coach used to say, "He only got his bell rung. Give him some smelling salts and get him back in there!"

It didn't affect me either.

It didn't affect me either.

Did I tell you it didn't affect me either?

Boy did that bring back memories of High School football. And yes, it didn't affect me either......much.

I remember comparing helmets with teammates after a game to see who had the most opponent helmet marks from helmet-to-helmet collisions. The kid with the most got an unofficial game ball. Hard to imagine now.

Actually two of mine were because of sports. One was while playing football during recess on asphalt and the other was as an adult playing softball. The other three were because I was a foolish boy.

I hate painful learning experiences and appreciate your sharing of the mishap. I’ve had numerous “near misses” and vow never to do anything so careless after each one, only to court disaster in a slightly different way.
Training camp should expedite the healing process, but avoid face palms for now.

Amazing how it was almost as much about craftmanship and design of the boat as it was about hard work and athleticism to win those races.

The movie by the same name is also excellent if the book is about the rowing team and the Olympics. I watched that movie about a month ago and will have to check out the book.

The books are always better than the movies. If you read the book first it spoils the movie. If you see the movie first, it's much better because it gives faces to the people and fills out all the stuff they can't put in a 2-hour movie.

I almost had a similar experience going down the basement stairs. The dog likes to explore down there while I'm doing laundry and I was heading down with a tall laundry basket in one hand and a tote bag with detergent and other sundries. The dog got excited and tried to beat me down the stairs and almost took me out. Like you my thought was toss the laundry basket and land on that but I'm glad it didn't come to that. My luck it would have been an elbow or a knee. Now I make sure the dog is aware I'm going into the basement and let him go 1st.

We have a smallish but burly Dobie who can be a hazard when using the stairs due to his excitability and unpredictability.
Also, as my wife and I are both kind of absent-minded and awkward -- we joke that our guardian angels have to work extra diligently -- it's important to have a home with at least one bedroom on the first floor so as to limit the use of stairs.
Gettin' old ain't so easy.

Glad to hear you survived reasonably intact Al! Head wounds are nasty and your fall could have been much worse. Just a reminder that we can't do all the things we used to do when we were young - make two trips with less luggage and one hand on the railing.

I really enjoyed "The Boys in the Boat", I hope you did too.

We're at the age where avoiding falls is best. Speedy recovery, friend.

Phew! It's nice to know that your career as a fuzzy-headed, scalp model isn't in jeopardy! ;)

" says she'll stitch it up, but first I should have a CAT scan. "

...and we wonder why our health care costs are so high...whether it's human or animal care, most simple manipulations require all these additional tests and consults.

I agree that doctors do order what appears to be unneeded medical tests but a lot of times they order those just to protect themselves from a lawsuit. How many people try to get rich because the doctor made an honest mistake? There are many reasons our healthcare is so expensive.

Al, referencing the line in "Ground Hog Day", you took a doozy and it seem if a person lives long enough it's bound to happen.

I also did a doozy some years back walking in my brothers garage during a visit to Wisconsin. It was dark and required a slight right turn to enter his house and I made a slight left in the dark and walked straight off and down a flight of 13 steps which led to his basement. A nasty fall and a trip to the emergency room revealed a concussion and badly bruised body which to this day limits the time I can sit on a hard bench. Of course just like your spill, there is zero chance of that ever happening to us again, but in retrospect, once was one too many.

one day you will be exceptionally happy that a plastic surgeon did those stitches. It's literally the difference between having your clothes repaired by a tailor or by hand stitching them yourself. I had a laceration clear through my ear that I was fortunate enough to have had an attending plastic surgeon do the work on - the scar is unnoticeable, the skin smooth.

also, this keeps up your family is going to put you in a home.

Ouch!!!
Sad for your mishap, Al, glad for your recovery.
We're putting you on the injured list for precautionary reasons, so that you can ease yourself into the lineup at your own pace.
We want you to be right for the first preseason game only one month from today against the Browns.
God bless!

Haven't read it, but just saw an interesting book for consideration: "Third Down and a War to Go," by Terry Frei, which is about the 1942 Wisconsin Badgers football season (including "Crazylegs" Hirsch) and their subsequent transition to soldiers in World War II.
What I've been reading is about the Civil War, including "Victors in Blue" by Albert Castel.
Today I'm expecting for delivery a book entitled "Grant Under Fire" by Joseph Rose, which seems to question the famous general in both his integrity and ability.
It appears there are a few books of the past ten years or so by authors more or less critical of Grant (e.g., Frank Varney and David Moore), published coincidentally with books by authors with high praise of Grant (e.g., Ron Chernow and H. W. Brands).
It seems an intriguing dichotomy that isn't necessarily always contradictory -- and a fascinating topic for discussion that has relevancy in how we see history in general (including sports history), and even how we perceive current events.
***
I hope other fans are finding good ways to make the most of our time during the offseason, in addition to some hanging out at CHTV.
Please be careful to stay safe in the weeks leading up to training camp.
My best to all.

Glad you're okay, Al. I've had a number of falls (not having a left kneecap means you can't catch yourself) on stairs especially and know the feeling well. Hilarious comment about your wife "cleaning up the scene of the crime", LOL. I had a fall while installing a railing on my basement steps where I landed at the bottom of the steps, temporarily was knocked out, and came to with a drywall screw in each palm (my arms were spread out palms up) and crossed ankles with one ankle severely sprained. As an atheist it was amusing to me that I seemed to have a perfect crucifixion pose. The day included going to the hospital to have my ankle cast. While a neighbor was taking me there, I had to stop to check on my car (it was my birthday, a Saturday, and I had to get the keys back from the shop installing my new car stereo). Naturally, my parked car had by hit by another driver while I was having my basement accident! Glad they checked your head and found nothing, er, I mean no internal damage. Heal quickly, we need your "polluted" perspective to get through the days until training camp! Edit: It is kind of funny that this story is sub-headlined, "the weekly brain drain" don't you think?

Incidentally, the next Monday, WHILE sitting in the dealership office watching the estimator write up the estimate (thankfully, the guy who'd hit my car at the stereo place had left a note) we heard a loud, "Crunch" and watched a 2nd DRIVER hit my, again, parked car. At least the guy was there to give another estimate! Al, sounds like nothing else interfered with your vacation, so you've got that going for you, which is nice.

Old people have to be more careful because falls can be serious. I took a fall a couple of years ago that put me in the hospital for a couple of days, and since then, I'm a lot more cautious. My advice is to spend as much time as you can floating in your pool, because if you fall off your floaty the water will cushion the fall.

The plastic surgeon should have given you a complimentary hat to wear to cover that wound until it heals up. Also a good time to be grateful for hair on your head instead of baldness. You still could have probably played around on the beach if you had worn a bathing cap (they do make them for men); but no wading out into the ocean as a nearby shark might sense a tasty meal.

Glad your recovering nicely. Looks like a nasty cut. Last year while one of the pack games was on, I poured a drink and headed down to the family room, looked at the tv, missed a step and fell flat on my face. My face was okay but I spilled a dam drink. Key words, pay attention to what your doing on steps and in our house with four levels we have lots of them.

As everyone knows I post here from time to time. What none know about is that I'm an award winning author of fiction. Not trying to start anything, just suggesting a book all football fans would enjoy and that is "Blood, Sweat, and Chalk". It gives a good history of the football innovations over the decades and how the defenses had to adjust to those innovations.
Also expect a great football book to be out next year that features a Packer QB....

As I can understand from all your posts on this article, we are pretty similar age (we are or becoming old!).

Also, most of us had similar experience with different outcome, Al. Some had bad wounds, some pass with luck.

What I learned from my experiences is that is hard to adjust state of our bodies with state of our minds. Our minds are always "younger" and we still feel we can do things as we did them always. The hardest is to accept that we can not do the things as we used to. The very ordinary small things in our life. I had similar experience, more than once. After some stupid events I went through, I found that one of the proverbs is very clever: "Own experience is the teacher of fools!"

So, what I did. Before I claim to myself that I can do somethin I did in the past so many times, I stop and remind myself of my age. Than I reconsider my decision. At the beggining I was not so succesful in fullfiling my decision, but, by time, I establish that pronciple. For example, I adore to drive, and in the past I had no problem to drive distances more than 650 or more miles at once, stopping just to refill the car with fuel, w/o any substantial resting time. Today, at my age (64 yo), I stop at least for 30 to 45 minutes every 110 to 130 miles to rest my body, despite my brain telling me that I can go further. I started to respect changes in my body because of the age. Every stairs I respect, going up or dowm. I have no problems, but, again, respect my age.

After all, I still make mistakes in assessments of some situations, but I can say not so often.

You may be younger than I am, Al, but father time catches everyone, rarely at first, later more often with more serious consequences. As one of my favorite writer on this web page and community, I hope you learned your lesson that went well, as it could be.

I wish you the best in future and hope described event will have no consequences on your private or professional life.
