Barryn Down on the QB

Sorrell could be an unexpected contributor to the pass rush

One of the most unique stories from the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay will forever be that of Texas edge rusher Barryn Sorrell staying in the green room for Day 3, as he wanted to hear his name called and walk the stage, no matter how late he was picked. Not only did he get his draft moment, but it ended up being in front of the fans of the team that drafted him, the Green Bay Packers. As a result of his unique draft day experience, being immediately embraced with cheers and open arms by his new fans, Sorrell seemed like he was ready to run through a brick wall for the Packers right then and there. So far through training camp and preseason, it looks like he's doing exactly that.

Saturday night against the Jets, Sorrell was one of the only bright spots in what head coach Matt LaFleur called a "sloppy" and "humbling" experience. He played 39 snaps total, with 22 of those snaps being on the pass rush. Sorrell was credited with two QB pressures, and his 28.6% pass rush win rate was 11th among pass rushers in week 1 of the preseason.

Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley was impressed with Sorrell's improvement throughout the game. He stated that when he saw Sorrell make mistakes, he would correct them very quickly. It is a rarity for a rookie player to be doing that so soon in their career. Hafley went on to hint that while Sorrell primarily lined up as a traditional edge rusher, he may look to utilize his versatility in different areas, as he has shown potential to be ahead of the learning curve and may see more action than anticipated.

We all know how the Packers' pass rush fared last season. Not good enough by any means. Which was why it was a surprise the team didn't invest a free agent or any high draft capital on the pass rush. It was obvious they were banking on an improvement from Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, JJ Enagbare, and Brenton Cox. While they may not have spent high draft capital on an edge rusher, they grabbed Barryn Sorrell in the fourth round, and he's already looking like he could be a steal if he continues as he has.

In practice and Saturday's game, Sorrell has shown off his unique athleticism for someone of his size.  He's shown an ability to use his quickness to simply side-step block attempts en route to the Quarterback and has used his hands very well to avoid letting offensive linemen get a hold of him early out of the gate. Not only has his pass-rushing technique looked good, but his presence up against the run game has been noticeable as well. Sorrell has shown off his skill in shedding blocks to quickly wrap up the ball carrier, and doesn't over-pursue. He shows patience, staying in his gap and not letting a running back get around him without getting his hands on them.

Sorrell started training camp in what could be described as a normal mid-late round rookie role, running with the 3's, but it didn't take long at all for the coaching staff to acknowledge his skill and hard work, bringing him up to running with the 2's. Like with any rookie, there will still be a bit of a learning curve for Barryn Sorrell. Any flashes now could be good signs of future success, but they won't just be a given. But his stock in definitely trending upward.

Rashan Gary and Lukas Van Ness will likely be the top 2 pass rushers heading into the season. Enagbare and Brenton Cox are the most likely third and fourth options, but if his camp and preseason continue as they have, Barryn Sorrell could find himself in a consistent rotation with those two for defensive snaps in 2025.

The Packers need relentless pass rushers to improve what was a poor showing last season. Barryn Sorrell's drive can help provide that extra spark this season.

I do like the talent on this team. The group that may be the most surprising this season is the DL. LaFleur and Hafley brought in Covington for a purpose.

The former Patriots DC has his guys playing with a purpose too. The DL is responding to his coaching and Clark, Enagbare, Gary, Van Ness, Stackhouse, Brinson, Wooden are all making plays...but the high effort trend setter Covington must love is Sorrell.

I saw a video of Sorrell and Longhorn team mate Golden playing a mechanical robot boxing game...and Sorrell knocked out Golden every time. He kept chiding Golden with stuff like "your techique is terrible...I gotta teach that punch again? Up your game, bro!" The look on Matthew's face was great...kind of like "ok, I know, I will...but shut up already!"

Sorrell is an Alpha Guy.

Thank you. And maybe hold off on ordering his gold jacket until he plays in a real game.

"Sorrell...doesn't over-pursue. He shows patience, staying in his gap and not letting a running back get around him without getting his hands on them." This should be music to every fan's ears, as this has been a problem for Packers' edges the past few years. There were a couple of good examples of him correctly diagnosing and doing his job in this area.

He did get beaten on a screen pass , though, as the Jets allowed him a free release and the ball was tossed right over him for an easy TD. So he'll have to be mindful of that in the future; if you can jump up and bat the ball down, great, but otherwise don't get suckered in when there's no line of defense behind you.

Overall it was a pretty impressive showing for the rookie, and what I like about him is that he has skills that are ready to translate to the NFL level. Now you want to see how he does against starting caliber linemen and tight ends, but we probably won't have to wait long to find out.

I don't think it's fair to blame busted coverage on your linemen.

When they drafted Sorrell, he looked like a high-floor, low-ceiling kind of player. Looks like he will at least live up to the first part of that projection. No surprise that he's a fast learner. Let's hope he can exceed expectations.

Nothing about him looks like he has a "low ceiling." Sorry but no.

That was the consensus on him when he was drafted. Here's a typical passage from one of the write-ups before the draft: "Sorrel's measurables and speed won't be eye-catching, but he's very consistent and plays with good technique."

Did you even notice that I used the past tense?

Sorrell seems like a good kid who is living the dream. Imagine being drafted a Packer AT Lambeau. Cool stuff. If he comes in and has an impact he’ll be off the charts. Rooting for him is easy.

After reading the article, my mind went back to draft night, him being there and being pumped up about it....I thought then, what if this big fella, turns out to be something real good. Still hoping that, but I gotta feeling he will pass one of our current starters, if not this season, then next. GPG

Hopefully feelings play no role in creating this roster or depth chart. Hopefully all our staff is coaching up everyone equally well, and the players make it very hard to cut anyone, let alone 21 of them. .

Not very many are clearly identifying themselves as an easy cut to make ...

I was watching the draft when they picked him, and he was easy to root for right then and there, seemed like a great kid.
By all reports he's off to a good start, let's hope he continues to improve and becomes another success story, the "D" could use a hero!

“He’s got a motor that doesn’t stop,” linebackers coach Sean Duggan said. “When you see a guy like Barryn putting in that level of effort, it elevates the whole group. That’s been his reputation since he arrived in Green Bay.”

I am going to enjoy watching the two Longhorns play this season. We know Golden is going to get many snaps...don't know how much Sorrell may figure into the rotation...but if he and Van Ness and Cox, Jr are pushing each other...all good for the young DE's!

Exactly! LVN has demonstrated non-stop motor, relentless pursuit throughout his career so far. While that's not enough, watching the film of last season destroys what's become the common narrative of how (supposedly) "bad" our pass rush was. It wasn't. We had some key people playing through injuries, and Hafley adjusted to it intelligently.

I look forward to seeing how much coach Covington can do with these guys, I'm a big fan of the talent on this team, both returning and newly acquired.

GPG!

Brenton Cox 4 sacks, 7 QB hits in 7 games (weeks 11-17)...extrapolating to roughly 10 and 17 for a full season. Unless his production was due to fresh legs expect his play to be impactful this season.
