Around the NFC North: Preseason Week 2
I've got bad news
By Mike Price

Let's jump right into it and get it over with.
Bears
- The Bears destroyed the Bills, 38-0. All three of the Bears' QBs played well though the most important thing is that Caleb Williams did. The second-year QB was 6/10 for 107 yards and a tud. The stats aren't really enough to get your heart pounding but the play was. Let's hope he doesn't keep it up. The Bears had 155 yards of offense in the first quarter. We've been writing about how hard it will be for Ben JOhnson's offense to click with everyone and maybe it did?
- Tyson Bagent, back-up QB, also played really well. He went 13/22 for 196 yards. RBs Ian Wheeler and Bittain Brown (haven't read either of those names in my lfie before today) both had a bunch of carries and a mid 4s yards per carry average. Nothing exciting from them.
- Rookie second round receiver Luther Burden III had a highlight play blocking for a TD run and Greg Olsen spilled the beans that Bears GM Ryan Poles thinks that he could be better than Rome Odunze (who he spent a top-10 pick on last year) and DJ Moore (who Poles traded for and who is actually an experience veteran receiver). It's an insane take! If he thought that Burden was better than a receiver he took in the top ten last year why did he take a tight end in the top ten this year??? The Bears make no sense.
- On the defensive side, Austin Booker had another sack. He's turning into a real Jayrone Elliot.
Vikings
- The biggest headline of this game was that the local broadcast interviewed Head Coach Kevin O'Connell during a play and he got extremely frustrated when a receiver took a step forward, creating an illegal formation, for no reason at all. Loved it.
- O'Connell also addressed Justn Jefferson after the game and then again on Monday. The coach hopes that Jefferson will take part in practice this week. Remember, Jefferson has been recovering for a while from a hamstring injury. Soft tissue injuries for shifty receivers aren't great.
- Weirdly, the Vikings did not play JJ McCarthy in this game after he only played in one drive last week. Instead, Max Brosmer was bad over 27 attempts. I guess it makes more sense for the Vikings to evaluate Max Brosmer.
Lions
- The Lions also played this weekend and to the dismay of Lions fans (I'd say the world around but, really, how many are there outside of michigan? 17?) Hendon Hooker is still bad. He went 6/13 for 61 yards and a pick. Possibly even worse, Kyle Allen played well with two tuds and 124 yards. Allen could convince the Lions to drop Hooker and use him as the backup for a few years. Which, as we discussed in the salary cap article, means they'd keep Goff next year and sign an insane extension to get his cap number down. Tying your future to Jared Goff when you don't have Ben Johnson isn't a great idea.
- In other news, Quinn Ewers and Zach Wilson both played really well for the Dolphins against the Lions' new defense. Obviously, the Lions are scared to play any starters but that's still pretty yikes inducing.
- Also problematic was the six TFLs and three sacks given up by the Lions' offensive line. Again, we can't glean too much out of this backups game, but it's fun to think about a Lions team with a bad o-line again.
- On the bright side, Sione Vaki had a good game at RB and a great game on special teams. Have to think he makes the team this year.

Nice roundup. Just good light sided practice for when the season gets started.

So, do the prognosticators actually watch these exhibitions and then adjust their crystal ball prophecies? No.
Are the Lions as good as what is reported? Everything has changed around them, so why would they get better?
The Vikings are purported to be better than the Packers... why? I don't see it.
And then there's the Bears... are they better, yes. Will they surpass 7 wins, no.

I don't see many places having the Vikings better than the Packers. Every sports book I have seen has longer odds for Vikings then the Packers.
I would bet the Bears get over 7 wins this year. They are going to be a lot better. They made good moves this off season and Caleb is looking better with a real coach.
